The number of depressed Malaysian university students has sharply increased over the past ten years. What started as a localized academic issue has now become a major national mental health crisis, but the true experiences of those affected remain elusive. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to comprehend the authentic experiences of students in Malaysian universities who are experiencing depression. This research employed a qualitative methodology via a phenomenological framework involving five participants female university students who are diagnosed clinically with depression. Information was accessed via semi-structured interviews that were digitally audiotaped, transcribed verbatim and translated to English to analyse the information. The results indicate that there are six major themes that describe the experience of having depression. They are high-achieving students losing their academic identity because they entered the survival mode, a bitter fight between seeking the help of professional assistance and turning to drug use or self-harm in order to cope, the pressure of being a normal, fearing to be seen as a burden, the contradiction between familial beliefs and attributing depression to lack of spirituality, the physically isolated nature of staying in the room because of the need to avoid social interaction, and the impact of past sexual abuse as an underlying factor of psychological trauma. The themes indicate that student depression is not just a medical problem but they are very much influenced by intrapersonal, social, cultural, and spiritual demands. It is thus recommendable to provide necessary support that will alleviate the deep-seated experience of depression, especially in the university.
Our study examines the mechanisms of retention for non-mechanized and unpaid teachers (NU/NP) in public schools or institutions under the Protestant conventionized system, not as an act of volunteerism, but as a dialectical phenomenon shaped by the tension between commitment and constraint. Based on a mixed survey conducted with NU/NP teachers, school principals, and Protestant coordinators, we showed that the permanence of these teachers cannot be explained solely by vocation, nor by the painful coexistence of these two logics. The dialectical thematic analysis of the respondents’ statements reveals pairs of opposing forces: vocation/exploitation, hope/slowness, divine service/survival. Thus, 74.8% of respondents simultaneously express a missionary attachment to the school and a feeling of experienced distributive injustice. This contradiction, far from causing a break, actually drives retention itself: the expectation, Legitimate faith, fear of losing accumulated seniority, but also the lack of job opportunities elsewhere; all prevent people from leaving. On the institutional side, managers maintain this paradox through a multi-valued discourse, mixing structural helplessness with the instrumentalization of faith. The study concludes that keeping NU/NP loyal is dialectical because it doesn’t rely on satisfaction, but on the impossibility of choosing between staying out of conviction and leaving out of dignity. It makes recommendations to the State: increase the number of schools, ensure retirement and mechanization for NU and NP; to the Church, to avoid reassuring NU and NP that their future mechanization is the State’s responsibility through religious discourse and unkept promises.
Abstract This article examines how intermedial electroacoustic audiovisual practice can treat perception as artistic material. It proposes Perceptual Translation as an artistic and analytical strategy that extends intermedial concepts beyond formal media relations by reorganising perceptual relations between sound, vision, body, space and technological mediation. The framework is described through four pragmatic strategies: Perspective Shifters, Perceptual Extenders, Perceptual Mimesis and Perceptual Rearrangers. These strategies are developed through Your Localisation Exposed , a wearable sound installation that inverts auditory spatial cues in real time, placing sound and vision into sustained perceptual contradiction. This is complemented by Your Hearing Them , which extends Perceptual Translation into an interpersonal auditory context through the sharing of an embodied listening perspective. Together, these works demonstrate how Perceptual Translation can operate as both an analytical and generative framework for electroacoustic audiovisual practice. By reframing intermediality at the perceptual level, this article argues for expanded approaches to audiovisual composition that engage perception itself as a compositional and conceptual resource.
Background The Big Five Personality (BFP) model is an established dimensional framework, whereas the Quantum-8-Personality (Q8P) model is an emerging culturally grounded framework derived from Chinese philosophical traditions. This study explored dimension-level relationships between the two frameworks. Methods Network analysis was conducted using data from 1,052 Chinese adults who completed the Quantum-8-Personality Scale (Q8PS) and Big Five Inventory-2 (BFI-2). Results The largest cross-framework connections involved Q8P Contradiction and BFP neuroticism, Q8P Extraversion and BFP extraversion, and Q8P Yanggang and BFP conscientiousness. These associations were small to moderate in magnitude. Conclusion The findings identify preliminary areas of correspondence between the Q8P and BFP dimensions but do not establish equivalence, convergent validity, or incremental validity of the Q8PS. The results should be interpreted as exploratory because the factorial validity of the Q8PS remains provisional.
This study examines citizenship education as a contested pedagogical space within settler colonial states. It focuses on tensions between state commitments to reconciliation and immigrant naturalization systems dependent on settler state legitimacy. To do so, it draws on interviews with adult educators in Vancouver, Canada, on the unceded traditional territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Using street-level bureaucracy theory, it frames citizenship educators as frontline actors navigating unresolved policy contradictions. ‘Downloading’ is conceptualized as a form of policy displacement through which reconciliation is publicly acknowledged but incompletely institutionalized, shifting responsibility for making this contradiction governable onto community-based adult educators. Three interrelated dimensions of downloading are identified: epistemic, moral, and affective-temporal. Rather than read this gap as a failure of policy implementation, the paper argues that downloading functions as a mechanism through which settler colonial citizenship is itself operationalized by re-stabilizing settler state legitimacy. Beyond adult citizenship education, the analysis offers a broader framework for decolonial and anti-racist education scholarship, including K–12 contexts, by highlighting how symbolic political commitments can redistribute responsibility while leaving institutional contradictions intact.
