ABSTRACT Infants often exhibit goal‐directed behaviors, such as reaching for a sensory stimulus, even when no external reward criterion is provided. These intrinsically motivated behaviors facilitate spontaneous exploration and learning of the body and environment during early developmental stages. Although computational modeling can offer insight into the mechanisms underlying such behaviors, many existing studies on intrinsic motivation focus primarily on how exploration contributes to acquiring external rewards. In this paper, we propose a novel density model for an agent's own multimodal sensory experiences, called the “self‐prior,” and investigate whether it can autonomously induce goal‐directed behavior. Integrated within an active inference framework based on the free energy principle, the self‐prior generates behavioral references purely from an intrinsic process that minimizes mismatches between average past sensory experiences and current observations. This mechanism is also analogous to the acquisition and utilization of a body schema through continuous interaction with the environment. We examine this approach in a simulated environment and confirm that the agent spontaneously reaches toward a tactile stimulus. Our study implements intrinsically motivated behavior shaped by the agent's own sensory experiences, demonstrating the spontaneous emergence of intentional behavior during early development. Summary Suggests a computational model for early intentional behavior, integrating body‐schema formation and goal‐directed actions under the free energy principle. Introduces a self‐prior as an internal density model that drives the emergence of goal‐directed behaviors without external rewards. Demonstrates spontaneous reaching for a sticker by minimizing mismatches between observed multimodal sensory inputs and the empirically acquired self‐prior.
How is vision shaped by other senses? Visual cortex is not merely a passive recipient of retinal inputs. It is also responsive to other sensory modalities, particularly audition. While auditory signals have been shown to penetrate early visual cortices, the mechanisms driving these responses remain poorly understood. To examine how audition shapes vision, we used functional MRI to investigate whether audiovisual interactions modulate the gain of responses in human early visual cortices. Specifically, we measured voxel-wise contrast-response functions (CRF), while participants viewed horizontally drifting gratings paired with auditory motion that was directionally congruent or incongruent with the visual motion, or stationary. We show that congruent audiovisual motion enhances voxel-wise contrast sensitivity whereas incongruent motion reduces it, manifesting as a robust contrast gain modulation across areas V1–V3. This direction-selective enhancement is nicely captured by a divisive normalization model incorporating auditory-driven feedback modulation. Our findings provide compelling evidence for cross-modal interactions at early stages of visual processing, driven by contrast gain modulation –a bidirectional modulation in sensitivity that maintains the balance between local excitatory and inhibitory activity. Together, these results reveal that audiovisual interactions can alter a cornerstone property of vision, highlighting the dynamic role of early visual cortex in multisensory processing.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is often presented as solving longstanding challenges of feedback in higher education. Research and commentary tend to focus on how AI can replace educator labour by providing feedback information at scale but this substitution risks simplifying a complex and interconnected set of practices. We draw from Barnett’s work on the ecological university to offer a dynamic, relational view of an ecosystem – where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This perspective of the feedback ecosystem sensitised a qualitative study, where data was constituted through participant discussion within two-hour online workshops. Twelve students and 18 educators participated across three workshops; analysis of participant feedback experiences illustrated how feedback relations shift in the presence of AI. To conclude, we suggest that in response to AI, educators can seek to strengthen their feedback relationships with students over time – what we call humans-as-the-loop – in the feedback ecosystem.
