Although physical activity enjoyment is associated with athletes’ psychological outcomes, the mechanisms underlying its relationship with mental well-being remain unclear. This study examined the mediating role of loneliness among athletes. A correlational survey design was employed. The participants consisted of 350 athletes selected through criterion sampling, including 178 females (Mage= 20.58 ± 1.99) and 172 males (Mage= 21.91 ± 4.88). Data were collected using the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale, UCLA Loneliness Scale–Short Form, and Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale. Pearson correlation analysis and PROCESS Macro Model 4 mediation analysis were conducted, and indirect effects were tested using 5,000 bootstrap samples. Physical activity enjoyment was positively associated with mental well-being (r= .586, p< .01) and negatively associated with loneliness (a= −.196, p< .01). Loneliness was negatively associated with mental well-being (b= −.447, p< .01). The mediation analysis revealed a significant indirect effect of physical activity enjoyment on mental well-being through loneliness (indirect effect= .088, 95% CI [.026, .147]). These findings indicate that enjoyment of physical activity contributes to athletes’ mental well-being and that loneliness partially explains this relationship. The results emphasize the importance of considering social connectedness and psychological experiences in understanding athletes’ well-being.
Mental health systems face a persistent gap in accessible, continuous, and person-centred support. Conversational AI can expand access to psychoeducation, emotional check-ins, self-management, and service navigation, but may also introduce risks of digital exclusion, cultural mismatch, privacy concerns, unsafe advice, and overreliance on automation. This paper develops a conceptual framework integrating Orange Technology, which promotes emotional wellbeing, cultural sensitivity, social connectedness, and resilience, with empathetic AI for mental health support. An integrative literature review examined peer-reviewed systematic reviews and WHO and UN guidance published from 2021 to 2026. Evidence suggests that conversational AI can improve depression, distress, anxiety, and engagement, although effects are heterogeneous and may decline over time. Personalization and empathic interaction may enhance engagement, while the framework's effects on community resilience, cultural sensitivity, and community resource integration require further empirical validation. The framework therefore positions AI as a supportive, human-in-the-loop layer rather than a replacement for clinicians, families, peers, or communities. It connects emotional sensing, empathetic dialogue, personalized support, escalation pathways, community connection, inclusive access, and governance, while aligning mental health innovation with SDG 3, 9, and 17.
Introduction All children have the right to education; however, school attendance problems represent an increasing global concern. The aim of this meta-synthesis is to explore adolescents’ perceptions of their school attendance problems. Methods A meta-synthesis of qualitative primary studies was conducted in accordance with Sandelowski and Barros's guidelines. Seven databases were systematically searched in November 2025. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the findings. Results The adolescentś perceptions of their school attendance problems included mental health challenges, negative peer- and teacher relationships, and a lack of school connectedness. However, positive relationships with teachers, parental support, and appropriate school accommodation supports adolescents’ re-engagement with school. Discussion The findings highlight the complex and multifaceted nature of school attendance problems, and the importance of collaboration between schools and parents to enable early identification and implementation of interventions. There is also a need to strengthen positive relationships between teachers and peers, increase knowledge about school attendance problems, and foster a positive school environment that supports adolescents’ potential. Background Benefit finding may be associated with better mental health after the pandemic, but its longitudinal trajectory and its associations with psychosocial resources and mental health symptoms during recovery remain unclear. Objective This study examined trajectories of benefit finding among Chinese college students from approximately 3 to 15 months after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. We also examined its associations with emotion regulation, social connectedness, depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms, together with indirect association patterns involving benefit finding. Methods A three-wave longitudinal study was conducted among 1,155 Chinese college students. Data were analyzed using parallel-process latent growth curve modeling. Results Social connectedness and benefit finding increased linearly over time, whereas depressive and anxiety symptoms decreased. Cognitive reappraisal was positively associated with the benefit finding intercept but negatively associated with its slope, whereas expressive suppression was not significantly associated with either growth factor. Social connectedness showed stronger associations with benefit finding trajectories than the emotion regulation variables. Benefit finding was negatively associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms at both the intercept and slope levels. Indirect association patterns through benefit finding were supported for social connectedness and both depressive and anxiety symptoms at the intercept and slope levels when inference was based on bias-corrected bootstrap confidence intervals. Conclusions Benefit finding increased during the post-pandemic recovery period and was associated with lower depressive and anxiety symptoms. Social connectedness showed relatively strong associations with benefit finding trajectories, while cognitive reappraisal was associated with higher initial benefit finding but a slower subsequent increase. The indirect association patterns linked social connectedness with both symptom domains through benefit finding at the intercept and slope levels. These findings highlight psychosocial resources that merit further study in campus mental health research, while the observational design does not establish causal direction or temporal precedence.
Nature-based extreme sports are often framed through sensation seeking, thrill, and voluntary exposure to risk, yet this framing can obscure the meanings participants attach to prolonged engagement with demanding natural environments. This study explored how experienced South African participants interpreted the relationship between nature-based extreme sport participation and eco-sensitivity. In this article, eco-sensitivity refers to participants' reported environmental attention, affective connection with nature, recognition of ecological dependence, concern about degradation, and efforts to reduce personal impact. A qualitative design using interpretative phenomenological analysis was applied to semi-structured interviews conducted between 29 April and 4 July 2019 with 10 experienced participants, five men and five women, who represented 11 nature-based extreme sport activities and reported two to 22 years of experience. Four interconnected themes were identified: risk as a managed component of participation; connection rather than conquest; sensory sensitivity and experiences consistent with mindfulness and flow; and eco-sensitivity and self-reported pro-environmental orientation. Participants described risk as something to calculate and manage through competence, preparation, and situational judgement. They also described respect for natural forces, heightened bodily and environmental attention, and a stronger sense of ecological dependence. Reported pro-environmental practices were self-reported and were not independently observed. The findings provide an interpretive account of how participants made sense of environmental meanings within prolonged outdoor sport involvement. They do not establish a causal developmental mechanism. The results suggest propositions for athlete education, outdoor recreation management, environmental learning, and future longitudinal research. Keywords: eco-sensitivity; extreme sport; interpretative phenomenological analysis; nature connectedness; pro-environmental behaviour; risk management.
It has also taken over a century for science to fully realize that oxytocin is far more than a “female reproductive hormone.” Both the measurement and interpretation of the biochemical and functional properties of oxytocin have raised controversy and remain works in progress. However, oxytocin is now recognized as a pleiotropic molecule that sits at the center of an extended system which includes vasopressin, the autonomic nervous system, the immune system and more. This larger system affects essentially every bodily function and helps to coordinate these with social context, the history of each individual and perhaps the existence of humans as a species. Together these support survival, reproduction and wellbeing, allowing mammals to manage and benefit from various forms of hormetic challenge. Here we suggest that oxytocin, viewed as a system, in turn acts as a keystone capable of connecting mammalian regulatory physiology to the benefits of social connection.
Background Psychedelic retreats are increasingly used to promote wellbeing outside clinical settings, yet the psychological processes associated with sustained improvements in wellbeing remain poorly understood. From a public mental health perspective, identifying mechanisms that support positive mental health beyond symptom reduction is of growing importance. Methods This naturalistic longitudinal study followed 173 participants attending guided psilocybin retreats conducted within a structured framework of preparation, dosing, and integration. Mental wellbeing was reported before the retreat and across a 12-month follow-up period. Longitudinal changes were examined using linear mixed-effects models. Mediation analyses investigated whether changes in connectedness, neuroticism (anxiety facet), spiritual transcendence, and absorption were associated with changes in wellbeing. Mystical-type experiences were examined as potential predictors of these psychological changes. Results Participants reported substantial and sustained improvements in mental wellbeing over 12 months, moving from levels below Swedish population norms at baseline toward comparable levels at follow-up. Connectedness showed the strongest statistical association with improvements in wellbeing and accounted for the largest proportion of variance in wellbeing change, followed by reductions in the anxiety facet of neuroticism and absorption. Spiritual transcendence was associated with wellbeing improvements when examined separately but did not retain unique effects in the multiple mediation model. More intense mystical-type experiences predicted greater increases in connectedness, spirituality, and absorption, as well as greater reductions in neuroticism (trait anxiety). The association between mystical experiences and wellbeing was substantially attenuated when connectedness was included in the model, suggesting that connectedness may act as a candidate mediator linking mystical-type experiences to longer-term wellbeing, though the observational design precludes causal inference. Conclusions These findings extend prior work on psychedelic-assisted therapy to naturalistic retreat settings, suggesting that connectedness may represent a key psychological process linking psychedelic retreat experiences to sustained improvements in mental wellbeing. From a public mental health perspective, the results highlight the potential importance of social and relational factors in promoting wellbeing beyond the treatment of mental illness. Future controlled studies are needed to clarify the relative contributions of psychedelic, social, and contextual components.
Pre-adolescence 9-12 years is a critical developmental period characterized by rapid biological, emotional, cognitive, and social changes that influence future mental health and well-being. Indian pre-adolescents increasingly encounter academic pressure, changing family dynamics, peer challenges, and extensive digital exposure, creating potential risks to emotional adjustment. Resilience, defined as the ability to adapt positively to adversity and recover from challenging experiences, is an important protective factor during this formative stage. This article aims to examine the determinants and dimensions of resilience among Indian pre-adolescents and to propose a culturally relevant, integrated framework for promoting resilience across biological, psychological, social, and digital domains. This article highlights key factors that strengthen resilience, including emotional regulation, self-esteem, self-compassion, problem-solving skills, supportive parenting, positive school environments, healthy peer relationships, and community connectedness. Digital resilience is also emphasized, encompassing safe technology use, digital literacy, responsible online behavior, and adaptive coping with cyberbullying, online risks, and excessive screen exposure. Based on existing evidence and contextual insights, the integrated pre-adolescent resilience model (IPARM) is proposed, integrating biological, psychological, social, and digital dimensions. Resilience promotion strategies are discussed at individual, family, school, community, and healthcare levels, with nurses and other health professionals playing an important role in early identification of vulnerable children, mental health promotion, and implementation of resilience-building interventions. Strengthening resilience during pre-adolescence represents a valuable preventive mental health strategy. A holistic and culturally responsive approach can foster emotional competence, psychological well-being, adaptability, and healthy development, enabling Indian children to navigate contemporary challenges and develop into confident and resilient individuals.
Contemporary Islamic education faces various challenges, including the dichotomy of knowledge, the tension between faith and science, religious exclusivism, and the crisis of rationality and critical thinking in the digital era. This study aims to analyze the relevance of Al-Kindi's thought in understanding and responding to these problems through a study of the work of F? al-Falsafah al-?l?. This study uses a qualitative approach with literature study methods and content analysis techniques. Primary data is in the form of Al-Kindi's works translated by Adamson and Pormann, while secondary data is obtained from relevant academic literature. Analysis is carried out through tracing arguments in primary texts, comparisons with secondary sources, and critical interpretations of their relevance to contemporary Islamic education. The results of the study show that Al-Kindi's thought can be reconstructed through four main aspects, namely the alignment of the goals of revelation and reason, openness to the truth without limiting its origins, the connectedness of knowledge culminating in the recognition of God, and criticism of the rejection of philosophy based on certain interests. These four aspects provide a conceptual foundation for the development of Islamic education that is integrative, dialogical, open to the development of science, and oriented towards strengthening critical reason. This study contributes to the development of a conceptual framework of Islamic education that connects classical philosophical thought with the challenges of contemporary education in a critical manner.
Learners enter Further Education (FE) for diverse reasons, and previous experiences of educational transitions influence how they approach new transitions. FE offers fresh opportunities for learners in providing both vocational and academic pathways. Understanding the transition experiences of learners is critical in ensuring the engagement and retention of learners. By listening to the voices of learners from three FE settings in South Wales who had considered withdrawing during their first year, this study offers new insights into what supports continued participation and what challenges learners face, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Findings suggest that early relationships with staff play a crucial role in helping learners settle into FE. Over time, friendships and meaningful engagement with the course become key factors in learners’ decisions to remain. This study therefore emphasises the need for FE settings to prioritise early transitions support and to recognise the ongoing importance of social connections and course relevance in sustaining learner engagement.
INTRODUCTION: Lifestyle factors are increasingly recognized as important correlates of adolescent mental health and wellbeing. However, existing research has largely focused on sleep, nutrition, and physical activity in isolation, with less attention to cumulative multidomain lifestyle protective factors and their prospective associations with subsequent wellbeing beyond prior mental health. METHODS: Data were drawn from 163 adolescents (55.2% female; aged 12-17 years) participating in the Australian Longitudinal Adolescent Brain Study between 2018 and 2025. Lagged generalized estimating equation models examined associations between cumulative lifestyle protective factors and wellbeing at the subsequent assessment after adjustment for prior wellbeing, age, and sex. Two lifestyle protective factor indices were examined: a Base Index comprising nutrition, sleep, and physical activity, and an Extended Index additionally incorporating mindfulness and social connectedness. Outcomes were positive wellbeing measured using the COMPAS-W and low psychological distress measured using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). RESULTS: Lifestyle protective factors commonly co-occurred across behavioral and psychosocial domains. Higher scores on both the Base and Extended lifestyle protective factor indices were associated with greater odds of subsequent positive wellbeing and low psychological distress after adjustment for prior wellbeing, age, and sex. CONCLUSIONS: Cumulative lifestyle protective factors were prospectively associated with subsequent adolescent wellbeing after accounting for prior levels of wellbeing, highlighting multidomain lifestyle protection as a potentially important contributor to mental health across adolescence.
Transitions from primary to secondary school can heighten anxiety, unsettle relationships, and challenge pupils’ sense of belonging. Schools increasingly deploy pastoral systems and universal wellbeing programmes, yet implementation varies and practice often lacks a clearly articulated evidence base. This literature review synthesises qualitative and mixed-methods studies (2017–2025) and examines how education staff can support pupils’ emotional wellbeing during primary‑to‑secondary transitions, with a focus on strategies informed by Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). Using a PICo framework, searches of ERIC, Education Source, CINAHL, and Psychology & Behavioral Sciences were conducted, applying inclusion criteria relevant to school contexts and transition stages. Studies were appraised with CASP tools. Findings cluster around three interrelated themes: (1) the centrality of relationships (teacher empathy and consistency; peer support; family partnership); (2) school belonging and connectedness (inclusive climate, pupil voice, and relational safety); and (3) emotional skills and resilience (structured psychoeducation, low-intensity CBT techniques, and peer-led emotion work). Methodological limitations across the literature include over-reliance on self-report, limited longitudinal designs, and conceptual ambiguity between belonging, connectedness, climate, and culture. The review proposes a practical pastoral framework that integrates CBT-informed strategies within universal and targeted supports and highlights priorities for professional development, co-production, and evaluation. Implications for pastoral care emphasise relationally attuned practice, actionable classroom tools, and multi-agency collaboration to scaffold emotionally safe, equitable transitions. Implications for pastoral care include embedding CBT-informed strategies within universal and targeted supports, prioritising relational safety, and fostering inclusive school climates to ensure emotionally secure transitions.
Refugee communities across the world have long gathered to connect and support one another during times of crisis, and this has been well-documented. Despite the vast amount of literature pertaining to coping and resiliency among refugee communities, there is limited knowledge about refugee community healing. Approximately one in three refugees experiences depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress that can persist long after displacement. Dominant approaches within Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic (WEIRD) psychologies tend to conceptualize trauma through an individualistic lens, often overlooking social, historical, and collective dimensions of suffering. This can result in siloed findings with limited relevance to refugee communities. Addressing this gap, this paper reports on the third phase of a Decolonizing Participatory Action Research (PAR) study examining historical trauma and intergenerational healing among second-generation Tamil refugee young adults in Toronto. This community-driven study foregrounds a praxis of healing envisioned with, by, and for refugee communities. Two research questions guided the inquiry: (1) What elements are important for community healing among Tamil young adults? and (2) What do community healing practices and therapeutic interventions look like in this context? Using storytelling and participatory avatar-based community circles, alongside reflexive thematic analysis, seven key elements of community healing were identified: (1) agency and self-determination; (2) historical trauma-informed approaches; (3) cultural safety; (4) intergenerational connectedness and belonging; (5) destigmatized access and delivery; (6) holistic and authentic healing practices; and (7) truth-telling as justice. Findings highlight community healing as a dynamic, dialectical process, requiring both resistance to intersecting systems of oppression and the cultivation of radical hope for justice and liberation. Findings also emphasize the importance of culturally grounded, community-led interventions in promoting mental well-being. This study contributes innovative, participatory methodology and actionable insights for practitioners and policymakers, advancing a shift toward liberatory approaches to refugee health.
Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in Eastern and Southern Africa experience challenges around medication adherence, mental health and wellbeing. Although interventions such as Zvandiri aim to strengthen mental health and wellbeing to impact HIV treatment outcomes, available measures often focus on negative outcomes or rely on positive psychology instruments developed in high-income settings. These tools may not adequately capture culturally embedded and relational dimensions of wellbeing. We describe the development of the Zvandiri Character Strength (ZCS) scale and draw methodological lessons for culturally grounded wellbeing measurement. The multi-stage scale-development process (2022–2025) comprised a scoping and systematic review, qualitative discussions, expert panel input, construct and item prioritisation, cognitive interviews, iterative item reduction, and exploratory factor and Rasch analyses. We reduced an initial item bank to a 53-item candidate scale, then to the ZCS 38 (38 items) and finally, the ZCS 25 (25 items), based on quantitative analyses and participant feedback. We subsequently assessed the ZCS 25 using retrospective pretest, post-test and follow-up administration. The review identified conceptually overlapping positive psychological constructs, many of which are measured using instruments developed in high-income settings and not adequately validated for ALHIV in Africa. Qualitative work highlighted connectedness, hope, self-acceptance, self-efficacy, purpose, and flourishing as key. Discussions also highlighted that wellbeing was relational, contextually situated, and often co-occurring with distress. Quantitative testing showed highly positive responses, disordered thresholds, ceiling effects, weak internal structure, and fluctuating retrospective ratings. Participant feedback suggested that positive responses likely reflected affirmations, and were partly linked to social desirability. In conclusion, the ZCS scale did not support a single interpretable total score, but its development offers important methodological lessons. Future measurement should begin with clearer construct definition, response-process validation, domain-level testing and explicit decisions about whether the measure aims to capture lived wellbeing, domain-specific positive outcomes or intervention-relevant change.
Background: This study examined the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Korean version of the Body Perception Questionnaire–Short Form (K-BPQ-SF) in Korean adults. Methods: Online survey data from 700 Korean adults were randomly divided into Sample A (n=300) for exploratory factor analysis and Sample B (n=400) for confirmatory factor analysis. Convergent validity was examined using correlations with related external measures in the full sample (N=700).Results: Exploratory factor analysis identified a 23-item, three-factor structure for Body Awareness and a 19-item, two-factor structure for Autonomic Reactivity. In the comparison using the same final 42 items, the modified Korean five-factor model showed a relatively better fit than the original study-based three-factor model. The five subscales demonstrated adequate internal consistency. All five subscales were significantly positively correlated with alexithymia, difficulties in emotion regulation, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and trait anxiety, whereas they were significantly negatively correlated with social connectedness. These findings are consistent with a priori theoretical predictions and support the convergent validity of the K-BPQ-SF.Conclusions: These findings support the reliability and validity of the K-BPQ-SF as a self-report measure of body awareness and autonomic reactivity in Korean adults. Implications for its application and directions for future research are discussed.
