Background There is no general consensus on which music genre is most effective for a specific condition. The impact of music on subjective pain perception during intravenous cannulation for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was investigated. Methods 204 patients were assigned to one of four groups: listening to Mozart, favorite music, relaxation music, or no music (control). Pain was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale at four time points. Results Favorite music significantly reduced pain perception both 30 s and 2 min after puncture while Mozart showed a trend towards reduced pain perception 2 min after puncture. When including only patients with baseline pain ( n = 71), a significant pain reduction was also observed in the Mozart group 2 min, with borderline significance 30 s after puncture, whereas the favorite music group not only intensified reduced pain perception 30 s and 2 min but also caused significant pain reduction immediately after puncture. No effect on pain was found for the relaxation music and control groups. Conclusions Music may be effective for pain relief in unpleasant settings involving short painful interventions. Favorite music should be considered first, whereby patients with baseline pain could also benefit from listening to Mozart, indicating a potential “Mozart effect” in this subgroup. These exploratory results need to be validated in future studies including a higher number of patients.

Background Emotional distress is common around clinical procedures, cancer supportive care, and health-professions training. Aromatherapy and music are easy to deliver, yet it remains unclear when combining them is worthwhile and whether the combination offers more than either component alone. Objective To synthesize experimental studies of aromatherapy combined with music or sound published from January 2019 through September 7, 2026; identify the populations and settings in which benefits were most consistent; and separate benefit over inactive care from incremental benefit over a single sensory intervention. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, APA PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, CENTRAL, CNKI, and Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source from January 1, 2019, to September 7, 2026. Randomized trials and controlled nonrandomized or quasi-experimental studies were eligible when they included an identifiable arm combining aromatherapy with music or sound and reported emotional-distress or related physiological outcomes. Two reviewers independently screened records, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Clinical and methodological heterogeneity precluded meta-analysis; findings were synthesized narratively using SWiM guidance. Results Twenty-four studies involving 2,530 participants from 12 countries or regions were included. Of these, 21 were randomized studies and three were controlled nonrandomized or quasi-experimental studies. The evidence covered procedural and perioperative care, dentistry, nursing education and occupational stress, and cancer or palliative care. Results were most consistent in pediatric dentistry, magnetic resonance imaging, nursing examinations or skills testing, and some repeated cancer-support programs. Two lithotripsy trials and the adult endodontic study did not show a clear benefit. Although combined treatment often outperformed inactive care, it frequently failed to outperform aromatherapy or music alone. Adverse events, acceptability, and economic outcomes were poorly reported. Conclusion Combined aromatherapy and music or sound showed the most consistent reductions in anxiety or distress in pediatric dentistry, MRI examinations, nursing examinations or skills training, and some perioperative and cancer-support settings. Clear benefit was not demonstrated in lithotripsy or endodontic care; in general surgery, pregnancy non-stress testing, coronary angiography, palliative care, and outpatient oncology, the combination generally did not outperform a single modality. Future adequately powered factorial trials should standardize the interventions and use prespecified between-group comparisons, longer follow-up, and systematic reporting of adverse events and costs. Childhood peer abuse moderates associations of inflammation and cortisol with subcortical brain volume

Laijun Bu; Zhen Wang European Journal of Psychotraumatology, 2026, Vol. 17, Issue 1, pp. 2730909 https://doi.org/10.1080/20008066.2026.2730909

Objective: Childhood peer abuse is a developmentally salient form of interpersonal adversity, yet its role in shaping links between peripheral biological stress markers and brain structure remains poorly understood. The present cross-sectional study examined whether retrospectively reported childhood peer verbal and physical abuse moderated associations of systemic inflammatory burden and hair cortisol with subcortical brain volume. Methods: Participants from a community sample completed the Maltreatment and Abuse Chronology of Exposure scale and structural magnetic resonance imaging. Inflammatory burden was indexed by a composite of standardised IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha, and C-reactive protein values (n = 292), and hair cortisol was available in a subsample (n = 172). Bilateral amygdala, hippocampus, putamen, and caudate volumes were extracted from FreeSurfer segmentation. Linear regression models adjusted for gender, age, parental education, and estimated total intracranial volume; false discovery rate correction was applied across the four ROI tests within each marker-by-moderator family. Results: Peer verbal abuse moderated associations of inflammatory burden with bilateral amygdala volume (β = −.095, pFDR = .032) and bilateral putamen volume (β = −.115, pFDR = .017). Peer physical abuse moderated the association between hair cortisol and bilateral amygdala volume (β = .227, pFDR = .035). Caudate models did not survive correction. Core findings remained significant after sensitivity adjustment for broader childhood adversity and current depression/anxiety symptoms. Conclusions: Associations differed across brain regions, biological markers, and peer-abuse subtypes. These findings identify peer adversity as an important interpersonal context for understanding stress-related brain differences.

Cognitive flexibility requires rapid updating of internal representations when action–outcome contingencies change. Yet how feedback on a single trial reshapes the distributed activity patterns that implement these internal representations remains poorly understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during probabilistic reversal learning, we show that a Q-learning model with separate learning rates outperforms a standard model and reveals stronger learning from positive than negative reward prediction errors (RPE). Reversal increases prediction error magnitude and induces rapid multivoxel reorganization in medial temporal and adjacent subcortical regions. During early reversal, RPE-related activity in right striatal and medial orbitofrontal regions predicts subsequent changes in right lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC) representations; these effects occur only after nonrewarded outcomes. Moreover, greater representational change in lOFC is associated with weakening of the action policy, and this pattern change in right lOFC is related to reward-stay behavior. Together, these findings link lOFC updating to behavioral policy adjustment during reversal learning.
