Pavitra Mohan Gunaga International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 10, pp. 1955-1960 https://doi.org/10.21275/sr261028210337

This quantitative comparative investigation evaluated and contrasted levels of state-trait anxiety and generalized anxiety symptoms between early and late adolescent cohorts (N = 100). A cross-sectional comparative survey design was employed using standardized psychometric instruments: the 40-item State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale (GAD-7). Non-parametric Mann-Whitney U tests and chi-square independence analyses revealed no statistically significant differences in overall anxiety scores between early and late adolescents across all dimensions (p > .26). However, over 47% of participants across both groups met clinical severity cut-offs ?10on GAD-7). State and trait anxiety demonstrated a robust positive association (? = 0.81, p < .001). The findings underscore an urgent imperative for universal, stage-independent psychological screening and preventive mental health frameworks within educational environments.

Objective Although the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) is a well-established instrument for anxiety assessment, its length may limit feasibility in large-scale, longitudinal, and time-sensitive research settings. Existing abbreviated forms were mainly created for adults worldwide, including Türkiye. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop and psychometrically evaluate abbreviated versions of the STAI-State (STAI-S) and STAI-Trait (STAI-T) for Turkish adolescents. Method A two-phase psychometric validation design was implemented across two independent cohorts. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was initially conducted in Sample 1, comprising adolescents recruited from an outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry clinic ( n = 420), to identify the most parsimonious item configurations. Subsequently, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and criterion-related validity analyses were performed in Sample 2, consisting of public high school students ( n = 277). Measurement invariance across clinical/community status, sex, and age, comparisons with alternative factor models, and receiver operating characteristic analyses against the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 were examined. Results EFA supported a stable two-factor structure for both six-item scales, accounting for 53.7% of the total variance for the STAI-S and 57.3% for the STAI-T. Internal consistency was high for both abbreviated instruments ( α = 0.804). CFA indicated mixed but broadly acceptable fit for the two-factor solutions (STAI-S: χ 2 /df = 3.66, CFI = 0.979, SRMR = 0.033, RMSEA = 0.098; STAI-T: χ 2 /df = 3.28, CFI = 0.987, SRMR = 0.028, RMSEA = 0.091). Standardized factor loadings ranged from 0.61 to 0.92 across models. Invariance of item thresholds and factor loadings held across clinical/community status, sex, and age in analyses treating the items as ordered-categorical. The shortened versions also showed a high correlation with the original 20-item scales and preserved their criterion-related performance. Concurrent validity was supported by correlations with the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Conclusion The findings provide preliminary evidence supporting the reliability and structural validity of the six-item STAI-S and STAI-T in Turkish adolescents. The abbreviated forms appear suitable for research use, whereas their clinical utility requires confirmation in independent samples.

Anxiety disorders are associated with psychological dysregulation and autonomic imbalance. Although mindfulness-based interventions and breathing training have shown potential benefits for anxiety management, evidence regarding their integrated psychological and physiological outcomes remains limited. To examine psychological and physiological changes following a four-week mindfulness-based intervention integrating structured breathing training and HRV biofeedback in adults with anxiety disorders. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. Thirty adults with anxiety disorders completed a four-week intervention. Anxiety was assessed using the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and heart rate variability (HRV; RMSSD and SDNN) was assessed immediately before and after each weekly session. Paired-samples t tests examined aggregated pre–post changes, and linear mixed-effects models were used to analyze repeated HRV measurements across the four intervention sessions. State anxiety decreased from 43.83 to 35.87 (− 18.2%), and trait anxiety decreased from 51.27 to 45.37 (− 11.5%), with significant pre–post reductions in both measures ( p ≤ .001). Aggregated mean post-session RMSSD and SDNN values were significantly higher than the corresponding mean pre-session values (both p < .001). However, linear mixed-effects models showed no significant main effect of time or Week × Time interaction for either RMSSD or SDNN (all p > .05). The intervention was associated with significant pre–post reductions in state and trait anxiety. Although aggregated HRV measures showed significant pre–post differences, repeated-measures analyses did not demonstrate consistent changes in HRV across the four sessions. These preliminary findings warrant confirmation in adequately powered randomized controlled trials.

Joseph S Wang; Nader Wehbi; Natalie Briggs; Helena Yip; Esteban Hernandez Parra Cureus, 2026, pp. e117394 https://doi.org/10.7759/cureus.117394

IntroductionThe therapeutic effects of classical music in reducing stress have been well documented, particularly in healthcare settings. However, classical music has also been used to discourage unhoused individuals from remaining in public spaces. For example, loud classical music is sometimes played at gas stations and train stations to deter unhoused individuals from lingering in these areas. Our study sought to answer the question of whether exposure to live classical music in an unhoused or homeless population would lead to a similar reduction in anxiety levels compared with staff, patients, and patients' families in a hospital setting. MethodsBrief anonymous surveys were based on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), a validated anxiety questionnaire.A shortened five-item survey was administered to participants seated in the cafeteria of the hospital and also in dining areas of facilities serving the unhoused.A single musician played the violin/viola for 60 minutes, while audience members were asked to rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 4 in categories including content, worried, tense, calm, and upset before and after listening to at least 15 minutes of classical music. ResultsTwo groups were surveyed, including the Hospital Group (N = 47) as the comparison group and the Unhoused Group (N = 66).A Student's t-test was used for analysis.Classical music was associated with improved feelings in both groups. When comparing change scores between groups, improvements were similar for "calm" (p = 0.092), "tense" (p = 0.678), "upset" (p = 0.183), and "content" (p = 0.123)."Worried" feelings decreased significantly more in the Unhoused Group than in the Hospital Group (p = 0.037).When stratified by gender or duration of housing insecurity, there was no difference in the improvement scores. ConclusionsThis observational study suggests that exposure to live classical music is associated with a self-reported short-term improvement in anxiety levels in the unhoused population.
