As universities, within the UK and internationally, strive to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in their practices, policies and, ultimately, cultures, it is imperative to prioritise student voice and co-production with equity-denied groups. This study examines students’ views, particularly those of equity-denied groups, on student voice mechanisms and explores opportunities to develop more inclusive approaches to policy and practice design in higher education. This article draws on the literature on co-production and student-staff partnerships to critically explore the process of moving from transactional to dialogical approaches to eliciting and responding to the ‘student voice’, emphasising how relationship builiding in policy design can facilitate a more inclusive environment. The article is underpinned by student-led focus groups with students, a survey and roundtable discussions with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion leads nationally. The findings emphasise the importance of moving from transactional feedback methods towards adopting a dialogical, partnership-based approach to policy and practice design and evaluation. The article contributes a framework for when and how to co-produce with students in higher education, particularly those from equity denied groups. We contend that when conducted meaningfully, promoting dialogical student voice mechanisms and co-producing change with students can enhance student experience and ultimately inclusion, while promoting social justice in higher education.

Primary to secondary school transitions and emotional wellbeing: a comprehensive literature review of pastoral strategies and CBT-informed practices

Fiona White; Angie McDonald; Bryan Fraser Mitchell Pastoral Care in Education, 2026, pp. 1-17 https://doi.org/10.1080/02643944.2026.2736106

Transitions from primary to secondary school can heighten anxiety, unsettle relationships, and challenge pupils’ sense of belonging. Schools increasingly deploy pastoral systems and universal wellbeing programmes, yet implementation varies and practice often lacks a clearly articulated evidence base. This literature review synthesises qualitative and mixed-methods studies (2017–2025) and examines how education staff can support pupils’ emotional wellbeing during primary‑to‑secondary transitions, with a focus on strategies informed by Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). Using a PICo framework, searches of ERIC, Education Source, CINAHL, and Psychology & Behavioral Sciences were conducted, applying inclusion criteria relevant to school contexts and transition stages. Studies were appraised with CASP tools. Findings cluster around three interrelated themes: (1) the centrality of relationships (teacher empathy and consistency; peer support; family partnership); (2) school belonging and connectedness (inclusive climate, pupil voice, and relational safety); and (3) emotional skills and resilience (structured psychoeducation, low-intensity CBT techniques, and peer-led emotion work). Methodological limitations across the literature include over-reliance on self-report, limited longitudinal designs, and conceptual ambiguity between belonging, connectedness, climate, and culture. The review proposes a practical pastoral framework that integrates CBT-informed strategies within universal and targeted supports and highlights priorities for professional development, co-production, and evaluation. Implications for pastoral care emphasise relationally attuned practice, actionable classroom tools, and multi-agency collaboration to scaffold emotionally safe, equitable transitions. Implications for pastoral care include embedding CBT-informed strategies within universal and targeted supports, prioritising relational safety, and fostering inclusive school climates to ensure emotionally secure transitions.

Success in layers: how widening access students build success in their university life

Mark Gallagher-Read; Besty Jose; Stephanie Ng; John Bathurst Deane Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education, 2026, Issue 41 https://doi.org/10.47408/jldhe.vi41.1803

This study explores how students from widening access backgrounds make sense of their success in higher education. Semi-structured interview data was collected from eight mature undergraduate students at a widening access university in England. Thematic analysis identified three interconnected layers that shape success: personal inner drivers, social co-production, and institutional structures. Students described how small moments of reassurance, self-belief, and determination helped them stay motivated, while the support of family, peers and approachable staff gave them strength and confidence to continue. Institutional factors, including inclusive teaching, consistent communication, and support mechanisms, either empowered or hindered their progress at times. Together, these findings show that success is not an individual act of resilience, but a shared achievement built through personal growth, supportive relationships, and responsive institutional environments. The study offers practical insights for universities seeking to design policies and practices to support widening access students to belong, progress, and succeed.
