BRIDGING THE GAP: ELT STAKEHOLDERS’ PERSPECTIVES ON DYSLEXIA-FRIENDLY INCLUSIVE PRACTICES IN INDONESIA

Hidayat Polim LLT Journal A Journal on Language and Language Teaching, 2026, Vol. 29, Issue 2, pp. 585-609 https://doi.org/10.24071/llt.v29i2.470

While research into inclusivity and dyslexia, a neurodevelopmental condition affecting language learning, has gained greater attention, multilevel stakeholders’ perspectives across both public schools and teacher education programs remain underexplored. Addressing this gap, this study adapts the broader UNESCO Policy Review Framework as a lens for investigating dyslexia-friendly inclusive practices among ELT stakeholders, including in-service teachers, school administrators, teacher educators, and university administrators in the Riau Islands, Indonesia. Utilizing a mixed-methods research design, this study gathered data through questionnaires, classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews. Subsequently, data were analyzed via descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results revealed limited awareness of dyslexia and inclusive education, alongside misconceptions and reliance on special schools. Although inclusive practices were evident (mainly differentiated instruction), specific support for students with dyslexia remained unaddressed. Despite inclusion being viewed positively and mandated within the education system, its implementation remained weak. The study offers implications for systemic reform, suggesting that ELT stakeholders enhance their inclusive practices through training and developing inclusive institutional management. Additionally, teacher education institutions should pursue curricular adjustments to incorporate dyslexia-friendly inclusive practices.

Maria Vender; Ilaria Venagli; Andrea Nardon; Sabrina Piccinin; Serena Dal maso; Chiara Melloni Frontiers in Language Sciences, 2026, Vol. 5, pp. 1912839 https://doi.org/10.3389/flang.2026.1912839

Introduction Event nominalizations are a central feature of academic language: they compress complex events into nominal structures, increasing informational density while reducing the transparency of thematic-role assignment. The present eye-tracking study examined whether nominalizations impose greater processing demands than corresponding active and passive constructions in developing readers, and whether these effects vary across readers with different linguistic and literacy profiles. Methods Seventy-nine fifth- and sixth-grade children participated in the study: 28 typically developing monolingual Italian children, 21 monolingual Italian children with developmental dyslexia, and 30 typically developing bilingual children with migrant background and Italian as the societal language. Participants silently read short passages in which the same target event was expressed either as a nominalization, a passive construction, or an active construction, and then answered comprehension questions while their eye movements were recorded. Accuracy, standard eye-movement measures, and scanpaths were analyzed to capture comprehension outcomes and online reading strategies. Results Nominalizations did not significantly reduce comprehension accuracy, but they affected online processing during both initial reading and the question-answering phase. Scanpath dissimilarity was higher for nominalizations than for both verbal constructions during initial reading, and than for passives during question-answering in correctly answered trials. In these trials, nominalizations were also associated with a higher probability of partial rescanning and a lower probability of minimal rescanning relative to active texts, indicating greater reliance on rereading when answering questions correctly. Moreover, children with dyslexia showed a generalized increase in processing effort, whereas bilingual children displayed an intermediate profile, with increased reliance on rereading during question-answering. Discussion These findings indicate that nominalizations significantly influence online reading processes even when questions are answered correctly, suggesting additional demands in retrieving information about event participants. Overall processing patterns differed across reader groups, and children with dyslexia showed the greatest effort in both online reading and question-answering.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) impacts learning achievement and psychosocial development and is associated with various environmental factors and also genetic factors. Here, we conducted a multi-center case-control study by screening 29,820 primary school students between 2–6 grades in four cities in China and enrolled 948 dyslexia cases who meet the criteria of dyslexia and 948 controls with matching age and sex. We comprehensively investigated the environmental factors using the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning model and Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) algorithm. The most important risk factors in dyslexia are the proactive learning habit, the age of child’s literacy, maternal education level, out-migrant workers, and prolonged screen exposure during pregnancy. The home literacy environment accounted for most of the variance within both groups. Then we examined shared polygenic risks between DD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder using polygenic risk score (PRS) analyses. The results showed that the highest PRS DD quartile had a 2.13-fold risk than the lowest quartile with risk factors adjusted (95% CI: 1.08, 4.18). The individuals with the highest PRS ASD quartile and PRS SCZ quartile (OR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.14, 3.98 and OR: 2.41; 95% CI: 1.23, 4.72) were associated with increasing dyslexia risks. This study identified the importance of screening personalized environmental factors among dyslexia and highlighted the shared genetic architecture between dyslexia and other disorders. These findings offered novel insight into the etiology of dyslexia, contributing to the advancement of early prevention strategies.

Alessandra Micalizzi; Sara Zaccaria Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1872307

In recent years, serious games have gained increasing attention as effective tools for supporting learning and assessing emerging cognitive skills in early educational settings. Within this perspective, the present study introduces Starlex, a serious game designed to screen pre-literacy skills in children aged 5–7 years, a critical stage for the development of foundational reading and writing abilities. Developed within a PNRR-funded project, the game comprises four mini-games aimed at assessing key predictors of reading acquisition, including visual discrimination and working memory. Following an initial phase of playability and usability testing, Starlex was administered to a pilot sample of 84 children in early education contexts. Game-based performance was compared with standardized assessments targeting the same cognitive domains. Findings indicate that Starlex provides a promising and engaging approach to the early identification of learning-related difficulties, showing good alignment with traditional measures, as well as satisfactory levels of usability and acceptance among young learners. While further refinements are needed to enhance the robustness of the tool, its replicability emerges as a key feature, supporting sustained engagement and enabling continuous observation of children’s performance over time. Overall, this study highlights the potential of serious games as complementary tools for formative assessment and early screening within educational environments, contributing to more accessible and child-friendly evaluation practices.
