Background Sleep problems are common among university students due to academic stress, lifestyle factors, and psychological distress and may adversely affect physical and mental health, academic performance, and social functioning. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have increasingly been used as a non-pharmacological approach to improve sleep health; however, previous findings remain inconsistent, and evidence specifically addressing sleep quality in university students remains limited. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effects of MBIs on sleep quality in university students and explore factors that may account for variations in intervention effects. Methods We searched seven databases—PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, Embase, and ScienceDirect—from inception to June 26, 2026. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating MBIs for sleep quality in university students were included. Two reviewers independently conducted study selection, data extraction, and risk-of-bias assessment using the RoB 2 tool. Meta-analysis was conducted in Stata 17.0 using a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses, publication bias assessment, and GRADE assessment were also performed. Results Ten RCTs involving 638 university students were included, with 335 participants in the intervention groups and 303 in the control groups. MBIs significantly improved sleep quality [SMD = −0.97, 95% CI (−1.43, −0.51), p < 0.001], although substantial heterogeneity was observed ( I 2 = 85.1%). Subgroup analyses revealed statistically significant between-group differences with respect to sleep-outcome measurement instrument ( p = 0.001), intervention type ( p = 0.009), and session duration ( p = 0.030), indicating that these variables may partially account for the observed heterogeneity. Sensitivity analyses supported the robustness of the pooled results. Egger’s test revealed no evidence of significant publication bias ( p = 0.270). The certainty of the evidence was rated as low according to the GRADE framework. Conclusion MBIs may improve sleep quality in university students. However, given the substantial heterogeneity and low certainty of evidence, further high-quality RCTs are needed to confirm these findings. Background The first period of life shapes later life chances, but the economic consequences accumulate across later childhood, adolescence and adulthood and fall across several policy sectors. Existing reviews typically address one risk factor at a time, or focus on a restricted outcome domain, leaving the relevant evidence scattered. This umbrella review collates review-level evidence on how early childhood exposures affect later economic outcomes. Methods The review was registered on Open Science Framework (https://osf.io/szpx5/overview). Medline, APA PsycArticles, APA PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Education Research Complete & Psychology and Behavioural Sciences Collection databases were searched in November 2025. Systematic, rapid, scoping, narrative and umbrella reviews were eligible if they examined early childhood exposures and later outcomes with measurable consequences for education, employment, income, criminal justice involvement, quality of life, wellbeing or service costs. Reviews reporting only health status outcomes, and those focused on low- and middle-income countries, were excluded. Two authors screened and extracted independently, and quality was appraised. Findings were synthesised narratively. Results Seventy-two reviews were included, published between 2001 and 2025 and increasingly since 2021. Adverse childhood experiences and related adversity were the most frequently examined exposures, followed by childhood physical health conditions, birth and perinatal factors, and neurodevelopmental and behavioural difficulties. Early years risk factors were consistently associated with poorer later education and employment, lower income and greater criminal justice involvement. Evidence on quality of life was mixed, and service use and costs were seldom reported. Few reviews addressed publication bias. Conclusion Difficulties experienced in the early years have consequences across several later life domains and public sectors. The evidence is most consistent for education and criminal justice involvement, and thinner for quality of life, service use and costs. Reviews rarely address correlations between risk factors or the pathways connecting them to later outcomes. Modelling these pathways and evaluating interventions to address early years risks are priorities. Limitations of the review were the inclusion of studies that covered a wide range of age groups and the exclusion of health outcomes.
A couple of questions in media effects research have generated many empirical tasks and as little consensus as the link between violent video game play and real-world aggression. Public argument consistently conjures up the medium after mass shootings, while scholarship has actually produced meta-analyses reaching contrary conclusions from overlapping proof. This review synthesizes experimental, longitudinal and population-level research released between 1961 and 2020, making use of twenty peer-reviewed sources situated in Web of Science, Scopus and PsycINFO that report a quantitative estimate linking violent media exposure to an aggression-related outcome. Short-term experiments find tiny rises in aggressive affect, cognition and laboratory-measured behavior, however, these estimates reduce when publication bias is modelled and rest on outcome measures of contested validity. Longitudinal designs yield effects in the exact same tiny range, with the biggest prospective meta-analysis reporting a standardized coefficient of 0.11. Population-level analyses of crime data discover no positive association between violent media consumption and violent offending. A reanalysis that anchors these contested syntheses to a common analytical scale reveals consistent yet extremely small adverse effects. Collectively, the literature supports a modest association with aggressive behavior, while failing to substantiate the causal claim linking exposure to serious violence—a narrative that disproportionately dominates public discourse.
Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is a newly described mental disorder characterized by an extreme obsession with the consumption of healthy foods, resulting in anxiety and impaired functionality. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesize the association between social media use and orthorexic tendencies among adolescents and adults. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and PsycINFO were searched through January 2026. Original studies assessing the association between social media use and ON were included. Zero-order correlations between social media and orthorexia measures were pooled using Fisher’s z under a random-effects (REML) model; heterogeneity, subgroup and meta-regression, sensitivity and publication-bias analyses were performed; certainty was rated with GRADE. Of 33 included studies, 22 contributed to meta-analysis of the correlation between social media use and ON symptoms, yielding a small positive pooled correlation (r = 0.20, 95% CI 0.15–0.25; I² = 84.3%; very low certainty by GRADE). This association remained stable across leave-one-out, subgroup, and sensitivity analyses (r = 0.18–0.20), and after adjustment for potential publication bias (bias-adjusted r = 0.17). A secondary analysis of two studies with reconstructable 2 × 2 data suggested greater odds of ON among heavier users (OR = 1.57, 95% CI 1.25–1.97). Pooled ON prevalence differed sharply with the diagnostic threshold (39.9% at the ORTO-15 cutoff below 35 versus 65.5% below 40), reflecting extreme heterogeneity (I² > 90%) across studies. Narrative synthesis indicated that the type of content consumed was more consistently associated with ON than platform or duration of use alone Social media use is associated with greater orthorexic tendencies. However, because all included studies were cross-sectional and overall certainty of evidence was very low, causality and directionality cannot be established and reverse causality remains plausible. Longitudinal and experimental research is needed to clarify the direction of this relationship.
پایگاههای PubMed، Web of Science، Embase، Scopus و PsycINFO تا ژانویه ۲۰۲۶ جستوجو شدند.

Electronic cognitive behavioral therapy (e-CBT) is a scalable intervention for anxiety and depressive disorders. While its efficacy against inactive controls is well documented, its comparative effectiveness against first-line pharmacotherapy remains critically underexplored. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO): CRD420261413686) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing e-CBT with waitlist, active psychotherapy, usual care, or medication in adults with anxiety and depression.Effect sizes were pooled using random-effects models with restricted maximum likelihood (REML) and Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman (HKSJ) adjustments.Outcomes were assessed using Hedges' g and risk ratios (RR), and evidence certainty was evaluated via the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) framework.Twenty-two RCTs were included in the analysis.Compared to waitlist/attention controls (k, number of independent contrasts = 11), e-CBT demonstrated a large, statistically significant reduction in depression severity (Hedges' g, standardized mean difference = 0.91; 95% CI: 0.63 to 1.18).However, re-expression onto the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scale yielded an absolute reduction (3.86 points) that fell below the pre-specified minimally important difference (MID) of 5 points. No clear difference was found between e-CBT and active face-to-face or bibliotherapy CBT (k = 3; g = 0.08; 95% CI: -0.59 to 0.75); the wide interval means equivalence could not be established.Adding e-CBT to usual care gave an imprecise, non-significant estimate (k = 3; g = 0.32; 95% CI: -1.41 to 2.05; p = 0.511) that neither confirms nor excludes a benefit. The network geometry revealed zero head-to-head RCTs comparing e-CBT monotherapy directly with antidepressant medication.Nineteen of the 22 trials (86%) were at high overall risk of bias, and funnel-plot asymmetry (Egger's test; p = 0.0056) suggested small-study effects, possibly including publication bias; most GRADE certainty ratings were very low.e-CBT is a scalable option that showed no clear difference from faceto-face CBT in a small number of trials, but its efficacy against inactive controls may be overestimated because of small-study effects and methodological limitations.A critical evidence gap exists regarding its comparative efficacy against pharmacotherapy, necessitating rigorous blinded head-to-head non-inferiority trials.
Background Physical self-concept is a key indicator of physical and psychological development in children and adolescents and has been linked to participation in physical activity and overall wellbeing. Nevertheless, intervention studies examining whether structured physical activity enhances physical self-concept have yielded inconsistent findings. This review was undertaken to quantify the effectiveness of physical activity interventions and to examine factors that may influence their effects. Methods Relevant studies were identified through systematic searches of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and SPORTDiscus (via EBSCOhost) from database inception to June 10, 2026. Eligible intervention studies were quantitatively synthesized using standardized mean differences (Hedges' g) under a random-effects model. Prespecified subgroup analyses, meta-regression, leave-one-out sensitivity analyses, and publication bias assessments were also performed. Results Ten studies involving 3,662 participants contributed to the quantitative synthesis. Overall, structured physical activity interventions were associated with greater improvements in physical self-concept than control conditions (Hedges' g = 0.51, 95% CI 0.17–0.85; p = 0.008), although substantial between-study heterogeneity was observed (I 2 = 86.5%). No statistically significant differences in intervention effects were detected across geographical regions, participant types, or developmental stages. Neither intervention duration nor the proportion of female participants significantly explained between-study variability. Conclusion Structured physical activity interventions are associated with improvements in physical self-concept among children and adolescents. These findings suggest that structured physical activity may be a useful strategy for promoting positive physical self-concept during childhood and adolescence.
BACKGROUND: Fear of negative evaluation (FNE) is widely regarded as a central cognitive component of social anxiety (SA). However, the strength and stability of the association between FNE and SA, as well as potential moderating factors, remain unclear. This study aimed to systematically synthesize existing evidence on the relationship between FNE and SA and to examine potential moderators. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024619488). A systematic search of major databases was conducted for studies published between January 2010 and April 2025. Eligible studies examined the association between FNE and SA. Two reviewers independently performed study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment. Random-effects models were used to estimate pooled effect sizes, with heterogeneity assessed using Q and I² statistics. Moderator analyses were conducted to explore sources of variability. RESULTS: A total of 143 studies comprising 146 independent samples (N = 80,285) were included. The pooled correlation between FNE and SA was r = 0.53 (95% CI: 0.50-0.55; I² = 88.62%), indicating a moderate positive association. Significant heterogeneity was observed across studies. Moderator analyses suggested that social anxiety measurement tools and cultural background were associated with variability in effect sizes, with stronger correlations observed in Western samples (r = 0.59) compared to Eastern samples (r = 0.52). In contrast, gender, age, publication year, and FNE measurement tools were not significant moderators. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of the findings, and no evidence of substantial publication bias was detected. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis provides robust evidence for a moderate positive association between FNE and SA, suggesting that FNE is an important cognitive component of social anxiety. The strength of this association varies across cultural contexts and measurement approaches, highlighting the importance of contextual and methodological factors in shaping observed effects. However, the substantial heterogeneity and predominance of cross-sectional designs limit causal interpretation. Future longitudinal and cross-cultural studies are needed to clarify the developmental and contextual dynamics of this relationship.
ABSTRACT Background Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is increasingly recognized as a complex paediatric feeding and eating disorder associated with significant medical and psychiatric burden. Methods This systematic review and meta‐analysis followed PRISMA guidelines and was prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251241490). PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched. Observational and clinical studies reporting medical and/or psychiatric comorbidities in paediatric ARFID samples were included. Random‐effects models generated pooled prevalence estimates; heterogeneity, publication bias, and evidence certainty were evaluated using I 2 , Egger's test, and GRADE, respectively. Results Eighty‐four studies met inclusion criteria. Gastrointestinal disorders (30%; 95% CI: 21%–42%) and nutritional deficiencies (32%; 95% CI: 23%–42%) were the most prevalent medical comorbidities. Food allergies were present in 15% (95% CI: 9%–23%). Among psychiatric conditions, anxiety disorders were most common (44%; 95% CI: 39%–49%), followed by depression (18%; 95% CI: 15%–21%), autism spectrum disorder (19%; 95% CI: 15%–24%), attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (15%; 95% CI: 13%–18%), and obsessive–compulsive disorder (11%; 95% CI: 9%–13%). Heterogeneity was high across outcomes ( I 2 ≥ 75%). Publication bias was detected for anxiety, depression, and nutritional deficiencies. Overall certainty of evidence ranged from very low to low. Conclusions Paediatric ARFID is associated with substantial medical and psychiatric comorbidity, particularly anxiety and neurodevelopmental conditions. Findings support comprehensive, multidisciplinary assessment and developmentally informed interventions. Further high‐quality, population‐based studies are needed to reduce heterogeneity and strengthen evidence certainty.
پایگاههای PsycINFO، PubMed، Scopus و Web of Science جستوجو شدند.
Associations between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and cortical thickness (CTh) deficits have been inconsistent, and underlying candidate molecular correlates remain poorly understood. To address this, our study aims to investigate CTh alterations in OCD, evaluate potential clinical and methodological confounding factors, and explore the spatial associations of CTh alterations with molecular profiles. A meta-analysis comparing CTh differences between OCD patients and healthy controls was conducted, followed by subgroup and meta-regression analyses to evaluate the impact of clinical and methodological variables. Spatial associations between CTh differences in OCD and gene transcriptomic and neurotransmitter profiles were assessed. The results of meta-analysis revealed that OCD patients exhibited CTh deficits in left posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), left anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and right pars opercularis compared with controls, although the left ACC cluster showed significant publication bias. Subgroup analyses demonstrated additional thinning in left inferior parietal lobule and right PCC in medicated and comorbid groups. Correlation analyses indicated that CTh alterations in OCD were associated with genes enriched in synaptic signaling and organization, which were highly expressed in excitatory neurons, inhibitory neurons, and glial cells, implicated in excitatory/inhibitory balance and signaling transmission efficiency. CTh alterations in OCD were also linked to multiple neurotransmitter systems, including mainly glutamate, 5-hydroxytryptamine, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid. Taken together, these findings suggest that OCD is associated with CTh deficits in regions affiliated with default mode and cingulo-opercular networks, which are influenced by medication and comorbidity, and these CTh alterations show spatial associations with genetic and neurotransmitter profiles primarily involving synaptic/glutamatergic pathways, providing hypothesis-generating insights into the neurobiological correlates of OCD.
Mate choice copying, the use of social information from others' mating decisions, is a taxonomically widespread form of social learning that can shape sexual selection. Two meta-analyses concluded that social information has a moderate positive effect on mate choice, but both rest on literature searches now at least seven years old. We asked whether the overall average effect they reported remains supported. Using a multilingual, grey-literature-inclusive search across seven languages, we added 69 effect sizes from 29 studies and harmonised the two source metrics, giving 227 Hedges' g effect sizes from 87 studies and 172 log odds ratios from 69 studies across 33 species. Re-analysed with phylogenetically informed multilevel models, the overall effect remained positive and significant but was appreciably smaller (Hedges' g=0.45, 95% CI: 0.25 to 0.66, vs. 0.58; odds ratio=1.81, 95% CI: 1.34 to 2.45, vs. 2.71). Heterogeneity was high, located within studies and among species rather than across the phylogeny. Small-study effects were strong on both scales, and correcting for them drew the mean towards zero. In some species, individuals do copy conspecifics' mate choices, but the effect is smaller, more variable, and more sensitive to publication bias than previously estimated.
Background PPIs have been increasingly recognized for their potential to enhance adolescent psychosocial health outcomes. These interventions aimed to foster well-being and reduce psychological distress by promoting positive human attributes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to provide evidence for the efficacy of Positive Psychology interventions (PPIs) in educational settings and highlight their impact on adolescents’ psychosocial health outcomes. Methods A systematic literature search of electronic databases, including PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar, will be conducted following the PRISMA guidelines to retrieve interventional studies published in English up to 2025 to assess the efficacy of PPIs on psychosocial health outcomes in school-age adolescents. Interventional/experimental studies will be considered eligible if they report the efficacy of PPIs compared to a control group in school-aged adolescents. Studies with unclear definitions of PPIs, those with no control group, and those that relied on newspaper articles or Google data will also be excluded. Studies published in languages other than English and those with unclear data, case reports, conference proceedings, reviews, and letters will not be eligible for inclusion. The quality of the included interventional studies will be evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for interventional studies. The pooled effect sizes will be estimated using a random-effects model for heterogeneity. Heterogeneity and publication bias will be evaluated using I-squared index and Egger’s test, respectively. Discussion This review fills key gaps by systematically synthesizing evidence on how positive psychology programs in schools affect adolescents’ mental and social health. Despite some limitations, this study incorporates diverse data sources to offer a detailed and accurate picture. The findings will inform targeted interventions and policy responses to cultivate the impact of PPIs on health issues. Systematic review registration: PROSPERO CRD42024595381.
