Children with special educational needs and family polyvictimization in Hong Kong: a cross-sectional survey of families

Chengrui Wu; Qiqi Chen; Ko Ling Chan Scientific Reports, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-026-77816-8

Families raising children with special educational needs (SEN) may experience adversities. However, previous research has focused on individual children, and limited research has examined family polyvictimization (FPV) and SEN correlates from a family-centered perspective. This study analyzed data from a family-based survey conducted in Hong Kong between August 2022 and March 2023, comparing families with and without children with SEN. A total of 1,400 respondents participated (mean age = 39.75 years, SD = 6.99; 75.4% female), each representing one participating family. Of these respondents, 130 reporting children with SEN and 1,270 without. Respondents provided information on sociodemographic characteristics, family violence and FPV experiences, and health outcomes. Multivariable logistic regression identified factors associated with having children with SEN. Lifetime FPV prevalence was higher among families reporting children with SEN than among other families (23.1% vs. 8.2%). After adjustment for sociodemographic, family-context, psychosocial-attitude, and social-support variables, FPV was associated with higher odds of SEN-reporting family status (aOR = 2.630, 95% CI 1.529–4.524). Other adjusted correlates included lower family income, male dominance, violence socialization, lower perceived social support, violence against adult parents, children, and older family members, poorer respondent physical health, and lower child quality of life. These findings underscore the importance of viewing families raising children with SEN as a window for identifying family violence and call for early detection, systematic screening, and family-centered interventions. Future research should examine these associations over time and strengthen family-based support.

Solveig Løkhammer; Eleni Friligkou; Dóra Koller; Jun He; Brenda Cabrera‐Mendoza; Stéphanie Le Hellard; … Translational Psychiatry, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41398-026-04498-1

The underlying mechanisms linking childhood maltreatment (CM) to adverse health outcomes are unclear. Here, we estimated CM pleiotropy across human phenome, also assessing the role of socioeconomic factors. Specifically, we performed a phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) of CM-associated loci using electronic health records and genetic data from the All of Us Research Program (N = 98,551), FinnGen Project (N = 377,277), and Million Veteran Program (N = 449,042). To characterize CM pleiotropy, we also conducted genetic correlation (rg), latent causal variable analysis (LCV), and bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. Additionally, multi-trait conditional and joint analysis and multivariate MR (MVMR) were performed to estimate whether genetically inferred CM associations are partially explained by household income (HI, a proxy for socioeconomic factors). PheWAS revealed CM loci associations with 66 medical outcomes (p < 2.76 × 10 −6 ), including psychiatric, musculoskeletal, circulatory, neurologic, and respiratory conditions. Similarly, we observed 285 CM genetic correlations (p < 3.24 × 10 −5 ) with a range of medical domains. Among them, emotional disorders starting during childhood or adolescence showed the highest CM genetic overlap (rg=0.75). LCV analysis revealed CM genetic relationships with musculoskeletal, metabolic, respiratory, and eye-related outcomes. For these, MR analyses highlighted bidirectional and heterogeneous effects possibly due to dynastic confounders, and MVMR showed a reduced effect of CM genetic liability after accounting for HI. In conclusion, different pleiotropic mechanisms likely contribute to CM relationships with several health domains, which appear to be at least partially explained by socioeconomic factors.

به طور مشخص، مطالعه انجمنی فنوم‌گسترده (PheWAS) بر روی جایگاه‌های مرتبط با CM با استفاده از پرونده‌های الکترونیک سلامت و داده‌های ژنتیکی از برنامه پژوهشی All of Us (N = 98,551)، پروژه FinnGen (N = 377,277) و برنامه Million Veteran (N = 449,042) انجام شد.

Development and Validation of the Parenting Practices and Discipline Scale in an Ethnically Diverse Sample

Kevin Ortiz Diaz; Maureen C. Kenny; Helia Baez Journal of Child and Family Studies, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10826-026-03370-6

Child abuse is recognized as a global health issue, but there are vast differences in parenting practices across cultures. Parenting behaviors and discipline strategies acceptable in some countries may be considered abusive in the U.S. This study sought to develop the Parenting Practices and Discipline Scale (PPDS) to assess parental practices that may be culturally acceptable but potentially harmful to children. Two related studies were conducted: the first established the initial psychometric properties of the PPDS using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), which supported a two-factor structure reflecting culturally acceptable vs. abusive discipline practices, and the second utilized regression analyses with a diverse sample of 1,089 college students to test the PPDS. Findings indicated that gender and parental status were the strongest predictors, with women and parents more likely to classify behaviors as abusive. Among Hispanic participants, those not born in the U.S. were more likely to view certain behaviors (e.g., spanking) as abusive compared to U.S.-born Hispanics. Across racial/ethnic groups, Hispanic participants were more likely than Black participants to classify culturally acceptable practices as abusive. These results underscore that demographic factors can shape perceptions of what practices are considered abusive. Furthermore, the intersectionality of different identities can create further differences. The PPDS represents a novel measure that captures culturally situated discipline practices not assessed in existing tools. Although findings offer preliminary support for validity, future research should evaluate the scale through confirmatory factor analysis and measurement invariance testing across cultural groups. This study aimed to develop and validate the Parenting Practices and Discipline Scale (PPDS), a tool designed to assess attitudes toward parental behaviors and discipline techniques. Findings suggest that gender and parental status are significant influences in perception of abusive acts. Analysis revealed significant differences in perceptions across racial and ethnic identities. The findings suggest a need for development of parenting programs targeting potentially abusive parenting behaviors among minority groups.

Sue Kim; M. Song; Jung Yeol Han; Kijun Song European Journal of Psychotraumatology, 2026, Vol. 17, Issue 1, pp. 2733421 https://doi.org/10.1080/20008066.2026.2733421

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to various physical and psychological problems in adulthood, with their effects even carrying over into the next generation through disrupted parenting. To better address the impact of ACEs, identifying the key mediating and moderating factors that influence parenting outcomes is crucial. Objective: This study examined the relationships among ACEs, adaptive and maladaptive cognitive emotional regulation (CER), social support and sense of parenting competence within a sample of Korean mothers of infants. Methods: In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, 290 women raising young children completed an online survey using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, univariate analyses, and moderated mediation analyses were conducted using SPSS and PROCESS Macro. Results: The final sample consisted of 290 first-time mothers (M = 33.02 years, SD = 3.08). Moderated mediation analysis showed that adaptive CER mediated the relationship between ACEs and sense of parenting competence, with this indirect effect being significantly moderated by social support (index of moderated mediation: B = 0.01, p < .01). It was found that mothers with higher levels of social support had stronger positive associations between adaptive CER and sense of parenting competence. Conclusions: These findings suggest that strengthening adaptive CER may be particularly effective for mothers with higher levels of social support. For those with lower levels of social support, the first priority should be enhancing social support to lay the groundwork for emotional regulation interventions.

Anneke E. Olson; John Michael Felt; Noah Greifer; Zachary F. Fisher; Kenneth Shores; Nilám Ram; … PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 10, pp. e0358837 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0358837

Background Contamination, when members of a comparison condition receive or are exposed to a treatment under investigation, can bias the direction, statistical significance, and magnitude of treatment effects. Objective This pre-registered study examined whether contamination biased estimates when replicating child maltreatment effects on two established outcomes, externalizing and internalizing behavior problems. Methods A multi-wave, U.S. national probability sample of children and families involved with child protective services ( N = 4000; Age = 0–17.5; Sex = 48% Female; Race = 60% White; Ethnicity = 30% Hispanic). Child maltreatment and comparison conditions were established using official case records and contamination was identified as caregiver-reported maltreatment for those children assigned to the comparison condition. Outcomes were 6-month frequencies of externalizing and internalizing behaviors, represented in T -scores, three years post-maltreatment exposure. Results The prevalence of contamination in this study was 96%. Propensity score analyses that ignored contamination revealed that maltreatment exposure had no impact on externalizing behaviors ( b = 0.28, p = .746) or internalizing behaviors ( b = 0.27, p = .744), failing to replicate prior research. However, propensity score analyses that corrected contamination replicated prior research by generating estimates that were in the expected directions, statistically significant, and moderate to large in effect magnitude for externalizing ( b = 8.72, p = .002, SMD = 0.74) and internalizing behavior problems ( b = 9.96, p < .001, SMD = 0.90). Conclusion Correcting contamination has the potential to improve the replication of child maltreatment effects, strengthening the generalizability of results.

BACKGROUND: There is limited research on how neighbourhoods influence harsh and abusive parenting practices in the home, particularly in low and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: We investigated associations between caregiver-perceived neighbourhood characteristics (community violence and social cohesion) and later harsh parenting practices. Additionally, we examined whether higher levels of social cohesion would mitigate the association between neighbourhood violence and harsh parenting. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data came from 3731 child-mother dyads enrolled in the 2015 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort Study. METHODS: Neighbourhood contexts were assessed when children were age 4 years and included caregiver perceptions of violence occurrence in the neighbourhood in the past six months (fights with weapons, fights between gangs, robbery and sexual violence) and perceived neighbourhood social cohesion. Harsh parenting was measured using the parent-report version of the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale at age 6-7 years. Negative binomial regression analyses were performed to estimate associations. Adjusted models included mutual adjustment for neighbourhood violence and social cohesion, as well as sociodemographic confounders. An interaction between neighbourhood violence and social cohesion in predicting harsh parenting was tested. RESULTS: After adjusting for confounders, higher violence in the neighbourhood and lower perceived neighbourhood social cohesion were associated with later harsh parenting practices (IRR = 1.05; 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.07 and IRR = 1.04; 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.06, respectively). There was no evidence that social cohesion moderated the relationship between violence in the neighbourhood and harsh parenting. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that interventions to tackle community violence and to increase social cohesion have the potential to decrease parental harsh parenting in independent ways.
