From faux flipped to gamified flipped classrooms: scaffolding and cognitive load management

Zamzami Zainuddin; Tianchong Wang; Riyan Hidayat; Madziatul Churiyah Learning and Instruction, 2026, Vol. 107, pp. 102487 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.learninstruc.2026.102487

Background Students new to flipped classrooms frequently encounter challenges with motivation and comprehension when engaging with pre-class materials independently, particularly outside scheduled class hours. Aims This study examined a scaffolded flipped-learning approach that helped students move step by step from a Faux Flipped Classroom (FFC) to a Regular Flipped Classroom (RFC), and then to a Gamified Flipped Classroom (GFC) over one semester. The goal was to support students in adapting to flipped learning, managing their mental workload, and improving their learning performance. Method Mixed methods were employed in the data collection. For quantitative data, learning achievement was assessed with tests and self-rating scales measured cognitive load, while qualitative interviews provided more detailed feedback. Results The results revealed that students in the experimental group who learned through the scaffolding strategy performed better than their counterparts in the control group. Meanwhile, both groups demonstrated a small drop in intrinsic cognitive load, likely because they became more familiar with the tasks rather than because the material got easier. However, the scaffolded group showed a larger drop in unnecessary cognitive load and a larger increase in germane cognitive effort, suggesting the intervention helped students focus more on learning and less on confusion or figuring out what to do. Intrinsic and germane cognitive load should be interpreted cautiously because they are closely related. Conclusion This study contributes to Cognitive Load Theory and scaffolding research by showing that flipped classroom success depends not only on design but also on how students are gradually prepared to use it.

Special Issue Introduction: Expanding Qualitative Inquiry on Student Loan Debt

Daniel Collier; Christopher Mariscano Higher Education Politics & Economics, 2026, Vol. 12, Issue 2 https://doi.org/10.32674/7feg9d41

This special issue introduction argues that qualitative inquiry is essential for understanding student loan debt beyond the scale and distributional patterns documented in quantitative research. Drawing on eight contributing papers, the authors demonstrate that borrowing is a lived, emotional, and evolving experience shaped by identity, mental health, and shifting life circumstances. The collection examines borrower decision-making that resists rational economic models, the embedded perspectives of higher education practitioners who advise students while managing their own debt, structural inequalities that constrain choice, and the confusion produced by a complex loan system. Together, these studies call for a methodological shift toward centering lived experience in debt research and policy.

Emo-aware: an intelligent and personalized model for driver emotion and health metrics assessment in advanced driver assistance systems

Sourav Mishra; Srijan Saha; Himansu Das; Mohammad Shabaz; Shakila Basheer; Ahmed Alyahya Scientific Reports, 2026, Vol. 16, Issue 1, pp. 31907 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-026-72113-w

Driving can be enhanced if the vehicle quickly responds to the driver’s emotions. Accurate recognition of the driver’s emotional state is essential for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The existing models restrict to single-modal data and fail to acquire hidden emotions which affects the prediction accuracy. Also, they lack real time data integration with self driving vehicles. Thus, a more robust multimodal model is needed to combine driver’s vital metrics and emotional behaviors for enhanced safety and dynamic vehicle-human interactivity. The proposed model ‘Emo-Aware’ blends real-time data from multiple sensors, including face emotion detection cameras, speech emotion detection microphones, heart rate sensors, and blood pressure sensors. The captured data are preprocessed to remove noise, retrieve relevant features and amplify to the desired state. Further, it processes this integrated data using a CNN model with hard voting method to precisely assess driver’s sentiments. The proposed framework is validated in a simulator using benchmark multimodal datasets, demonstrating its effectiveness for driver emotion assessment and laying groundwork for future real-world ADAS deployment. The robustness of model lies in its capability to adjust driving constraints on basis of the emotion quotient of driver thereby providing a personalized driving environment. Upon model’s implementation, there is a notable rise in accuracy and fall in the loss function. The diagonal values in the confusion matrix represent class-wise emotion detection accuracies of 0.92, 0.93, 0.91, 0.95, 0.92, and 0.86, corresponding to the emotions of disgust, fear, happiness, neutrality, sadness, and surprise, respectively. The results for discrete functional modules are also gauged. The speech-sentiment module recorded the optimal values, 0.94, 0.93, 0.91, and 0.92, respectively, for accuracy, precision, recall, and f-score. The blood pressure module reported the MSE, RMSE, MAE, and R-squared values as 6 mmHg² and 2.6 mmHg, 2.2 mmHg, and 0.96, respectively. Furthermore, the Face module also recorded the optimum values of 0.95, 0.94, 0.93, and 0.93 for accuracy, precision, recall, and f-score, respectively. Therefore, the model can be beneficial for advanced driver emotion detection that not only emphasizes safety but also examines the relationship between drivers and their vehicles through personalized emotionally aware interactions.

Prolonged Psychological Distress Following Recreational LSD Use in a Young Adult with Multiple Vulnerability Factors: A Case Report

Giacomo d’Andrea; Antonio Inserra; Andrea Miuli; Maria Rosaria Balestra; Monica Santangelo; Mauro Pettorruso Clinical Neuropsychopharmacology and Addiction, 2026, Vol. 2, Issue 3 https://doi.org/10.53941/cna.2026.100015

While psychedelic experiences are often reported as positive, adverse psychological reactions can occur. We present the case of a 19-year-old Caucasian male who presented to the ER with suicidal thoughts after taking lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) alone. He was diagnosed with anxious state associated with panic attacks, and suicidal thoughts without ideation or behaviors. He was admitted to the psychiatric ward and treated with trazodone, a serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor antidepressant, and brexpiprazole, an atypical antipsychotic. He responded well and was discharged after 12 days with recommendations to continue therapy with brexpiprazole and attend follow-up at the territorial mental health services. Five days later, he engaged in alcohol consumption with a roommate met during the psychiatric admission, and suicidal thoughts re-emerged. He presented again to the ER but was not admitted to the inpatient unit, since he improved with supportive conversation and medication. One month later, he returned to the ER a third time due to pervasive doubt and confusion that distressed him to the point of triggering unstructured suicidal thoughts. After one week of hospitalization, he was discharged and citalopram (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor [SSRI]) was added to the therapy. Following the third admission, the clinical suspicion strengthened that he may have an underlying obsessive functioning pattern that became clinically apparent following LSD use, although the contribution of other vulnerability factors could not be excluded. This case highlights the importance of set and setting, underscores the relevance of harm reduction strategies for both recreational and clinical users, and highlights a potentially negative interaction between serotonergic psychedelics and alcohol.
