Video and digital games have been the focus of sustained public and scientific debate since their commercial emergence in the late 1970s, particularly regarding their effects on children and adolescents. Early public and scientific discourse frequently portrayed gaming as a source of physical injury, addiction, aggression, social isolation, academic problems, and moral decline. However, subsequent empirical research has produced a substantially more differentiated picture of both the benefits and risks of gaming. This review examines the historical foundations of controversies surrounding video and digital games and synthesizes contemporary evidence concerning their cognitive, emotional, social, therapeutic, and physical effects. . Research indicates that moderate, purposeful gaming may improve visuospatial abilities, attentional control, problem-solving, mood regulation, social connection, and selected educational outcomes. Gaming-based interventions have also demonstrated therapeutic potential, particularly for depressive symptoms and attention-related difficulties among young people. At the same time, important risks remain, especially when gaming becomes excessive, compulsive, or disruptive to everyday functioning. These include repetitive-strain injuries, sleep disruption, problematic gaming, and adverse mental-health and academic outcomes. Evidence concerning violent games and serious real-world aggression remains more contested, with recent research emphasizing relatively small effects and the importance of individual and contextual factors. Overall, the evidence suggests that the developmental consequences of gaming for children and adolescents depend less on gaming itself than on the duration, content, context, and pattern of engagement.

Wearable monitoring of pre-shot heart rate in youth golfers: a potential mental-load correlate in ecological putting practice

Jasper Gielen; Katrien Buysse; Elise Heirman; ROMAIN R. MEEUSEN; Jean‐Marie Aerts Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1939721 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1939721

Introduction Information and communication technologies, including wearable sensors, offer accessible and ecological ways to support psychological processes underpinning technical practice in sport, such as the regulation of attention, arousal and mental load. The aim of this exploratory study is to examine whether heart rate (HR) and physical activity (PA), recorded with a chest-worn wearable, can serve as a potential, indirect correlate of the mental load experienced during golf putting training. Two research questions were of interest: (i) Do pre-shot HR and PA differ between made and missed putts? (ii) Do pre-shot HR and PA differ following a made compared with a missed putt? Methods Seven youth golfing athletes (13–16 years old; handicap (hcp) index < 12) performed a putting training exercise in which the goal was to score five consecutive putts from 3-metre distance to the hole. HR and PA were recorded continuously and matched with putting performance using video footage. Pre-shot HR and PA were taken as the mean over the 5 s before ball contact. Because the putts are nested within sessions and athletes, the analyses combine within-athlete non-parametric tests, corrected for multiple comparisons and reported with effect sizes, with linear mixed-effects models treating athlete and session as random effects. Results Pre-shot HR and PA do not differ significantly between made and missed putts (mixed-model estimate for HR: +0.09 bpm, 95% CI [−0.46, 0.64]; p = 0.76). However, pre-shot HR is higher following a made putt and lower following a missed one (+5.08 bpm, 95% CI [4.54, 5.62]; p < 0.001), an association that persists after adjusting for the pre-shot HR of the preceding putt. PA shows the opposite trend. Discussion Because no subjective ratings of mental load, arousal or affect were collected, mental load remains one plausible interpretation of this pattern rather than an established one. Pending validation against such measures, the approach could offer coaches and athletes an exploratory starting point for conversations about how training situations are experienced, and illustrates how continuous monitoring of HR may provide a potential indirect correlate of mental load in youth golfers.

Digital Mindfulness as a Pedagogical Strategy for Student Engagement in Hybrid Learning: A Systematic Review

Dailami Firdaus; Heni Rochimah; Reni Armiati F1000Research, 2026, Vol. 15, pp. 1710 https://doi.org/10.12688/f1000research.191569.1

Background Hybrid learning requires students to sustain attention, regulate emotions, and use technology purposefully across physical and virtual spaces. Digital mindfulness has mainly been studied as a means of reducing psychological distress; its role as a pedagogical strategy for engagement has not been systematically synthesised. We aimed to identify the forms of digital mindfulness reported in relation to student engagement, how interventions are designed and implemented, the mechanisms through which they support engagement, and the direction of reported effects. Methods A systematic review following the PRISMA 2020 statement was conducted across Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC for records published between January 2021 and July 2026. Eligible studies were English-language research articles in Scopus-indexed journals reporting quantitative or mixed-methods evidence. Screening was performed independently by two reviewers (Cohen’s kappa = 0.81), methodological quality was appraised with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, and the evidence was analysed through thematic and narrative synthesis. The review followed PRISMA 2020 and was registered retrospectively on the Open Science Framework (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/ZNSMK). Results From 412 initial records, 14 articles met the inclusion criteria. Three forms of digital mindfulness were identified: psychological or dispositional capacity (36%), structured digital interventions (36%), and mindful agency in technology use (28%), operationalised through learning management systems, mobile applications, and guided practices supported by monitoring and mentoring. Digital mindfulness supported engagement by strengthening attention regulation, emotional management, motivation, self-efficacy, autonomy, participation, and persistence, with 79% of studies reporting positive effects, 14% limited effects, and 7% no significant relationship. Conclusions The study proposes an integrative conceptual model linking digital mindfulness to the behavioural, cognitive, and emotional dimensions of engagement, with practical implications for hybrid learning design. The evidence is limited by heterogeneous engagement measures and the dominance of online-learning and Asian research contexts.

Anxiety state-related task disengagement varies with trait anxiety

Ceyda Sayalı; Emma Heling; Roshan Cools Communications Psychology, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s44271-026-00545-1

Cognitively demanding tasks are often perceived as costly, leading to effort avoidance, particularly in populations with motivational impairments. Research on anxiety and cognitive effort are mixed: some suggest anxiety increases effort cost, while others indicate it can motivate engagement. To reconcile these perspectives, we examined the interaction between state and trait anxiety on cognitive effort evaluation and engagement. We hypothesized that state anxiety enhances task engagement as difficulty increases, which diminishes with higher trait anxiety. We assessed self-reported anxiety and manipulated participants’ affective state in two online samples. Contrary to our hypothesis, in Experiment 1, participants ( N = 107) with low trait anxiety reported reduced task engagement under high state anxiety, but only for easy tasks. This effect was attenuated in participants with higher trait anxiety. This interaction partially replicated in Experiment 2 ( N = 572), where the negative effect of state anxiety on engagement was again attenuated in individuals with higher trait anxiety, but was observed across all task difficulty levels rather than being restricted to easy tasks. These findings suggest that trait anxiety may reflect reduced impact of state anxiety on disengagement.

No Age of Inattention: Small and Domain-Differentiated Cross-Temporal Changes in Tests of Selective Attention and Attentional Control in Austrian Adults (2000-2025)

Jonas Lesigang; Marco Vetter; Martin Voracek; Jakob Pietschnig Intelligence & Cognitive Abilities, 2026 https://doi.org/10.65550/001c.171910

Cross-temporal changes in cognitive abilities in the vein of the Flynn effect evidently are differentiated across cognitive domains. However, little is known about cross-temporal changes in selective attention and attentional control. This knowledge gap is particularly relevant in light of hypotheses about changes in attention-related abilities in the digital age. In a norm-comparison study, we investigated whether the performance of Austrian adults in three well-established tests of selective attention and attentional control (interference management and sustained attention) changed between 2000 and 2025. We compared three population-representative archival samples, recruited between 2000 and 2004 for standardization purposes ( Ns = 220, 267, and 325), with equally sized and demographically matched samples purposefully recruited in 2025. Change trajectories, albeit generally small in strength, were directionally differentiated across these three attention-related domains, yielding improvements in selective attention ( d = 0.12), stagnation in interference management (absolute ds < 0.06), and potential declines in sustained attention ( d = -0.27). Relatedly, most accuracy indicators across these three tests showed evidence for small improvements ( d range = -0.11 to 0.27). This set of findings indicates small, but domain-differentiated, changes in selective attention and attentional control in Austrian adults for the period 2000 to 2025. Furthermore, the results further support domain differentiation of cross-temporal changes in cognitive abilities and contradict the notion of large changes in attention-related abilities in the digital age.
