Generation Alpha (born 2010-2024) and Generation Beta (born 2025-2039) represent an unprecedented developmental archetype defined by total digital integration and ubiquitous artificial intelligence (AI). This empirical study evaluated specialized psychological adaptation mechanisms, parenting models, and mental health intervention frameworks across these cohorts. Utilizing a mixed-methods design, quantitative data were gathered from $N = 300$ parents (Gen Alpha parents and expectant/early Gen Beta parents) using the Modified Parental Stress Scale (PSS) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), supplemented by qualitative interviews with $N = 20$ pediatric mental health experts. Independent samples $t$-tests confirmed that Gen Alpha/Beta display significantly higher digital dependency anxiety ($M = 38.60, p < .001$) alongside superior visual-spatial intelligence ($M = 44.10, p < .001$) relative to normative baselines. Crucially, a proactive "Digital Integration" co-navigation parenting framework yielded significantly lower parental stress ($M = 29.50$) compared to rigid "Digital Detox" restriction models ($M = 42.80, p < .001$). A preventive clinical framework focusing on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and cognitive impulse management is proposed.
Despite the recognized importance of youth participation in agricultural production for food security, Cash crop production and rural development, its engagement among youth in Tanzania remains remarkably low. In Badugu Ward, Bariadi District, for instance, only about 30% of youth participate in agricultural production despite abundant family land. This study explored the influence of land inheritance systems on youth participation in agricultural production in Badugu Ward, Bariadi District in Simiyu Region, Tanzania. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study focuses on the lived experiences of thirty (30) youth participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, Focus Group Discussions and observation, analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-step framework. Findings reveal that decisions are heavily influenced by elders authority, clan norms and gendered inheritance practices, where the credibility of family elders and the rigidity of cultural norms significantly shape youth access to land. Notably, social pressures, particularly from elders and male family members, discourage youth, especially women, from claiming land. Recommendations emphasize enhancing community engagement through consistent communication, education initiatives, and leveraging peer testimonials to foster trust and mitigate uncertainty about land transfer. Overall, the study highlights the complexity of socio-cultural dynamics in agricultural land access and suggests that effective strategies for promoting youth participation must address these collective influences.
This paper examines the significant role played by teachers in fostering the holistic development of students, extending beyond academic achievement to encompass their intellectual, emotional, social, ethical, physical and creative growth. Teachers play a significant role in shaping students’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and competencies through effective pedagogical practices, learner-centered approaches and inclusive classroom environments. Their ability to recognize diverse learning needs, encourage critical thinking, nurture creativity and promote social-emotional well-being is essential for facilitating meaningful and comprehensive student development. Furthermore, continuous professional development and adherence to ethical and professional standards enable teachers to respond effectively to the evolving educational needs of learners. However, holistic student development cannot be achieved through teacher’s efforts alone. Educational institutions and school leadership also play a crucial role in establishing supportive, equitable, and inclusive learning environments. The paper highlights the importance of shared leadership, collaborative planning and professional learning communities (PLCs) in strengthening cooperation between teachers and school administration. Such collaborative practices can facilitate the integration of academic learning with life skills, value education, experiential learning and the development of essential twenty-first century competencies; the paper also examines challenges that may hinder holistic student development, including limited resources, time constraints, hierarchical administrative structure and inadequate opportunities for professional collaboration. It argues that fostering trust, effective communication, psychological safety and collective responsibility is essential for overcoming these barriers. The paper concludes that holistic student development requires a collaborative and learner-centered educational ecosystem in which teachers; school leaders and other stakeholders work together to nurture well-rounded, responsible, resilient and lifelong learners.
This action research study examined the relationship between social–emotional learning (SEL) and early mathematical achievement among transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students in a large urban Title I elementary school. National organizations emphasize that high-quality mathematics instruction for young children must consider cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social–emotional development. Guided by this framework, the study investigated whether systematic SEL instruction using the district adopted Second Step curriculum would increase students’ SEL competencies and support growth in foundational math skills measured by the Eureka Math Module 4 assessment. Using a pre- and post-test design, data were collected from eight students who received structured SEL and mathematics instruction over one semester. Results indicated consistent improvement in students’ SEL competencies, including executive functioning skills, alongside significant gains in mathematical performance. These findings align with prior research suggesting that SEL supports school readiness, adaptive learning behaviors, and academic achievement.
This study examined teacher self-efficacy, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) integration, and their predictive relationships with teacher effectiveness in the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) Program in the Tagbilaran City Division, Bohol, Philippines. Anchored in Social Cognitive Theory, the Prosocial Classroom Model, the CASEL SEL Framework, Self-Determination Theory, and Emotional Intelligence Theory, the study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. Quantitative respondents comprised 202 ARAL teachers and 23 school heads or designated supervisors from eight public junior high schools. The qualitative phase involved 15 teachers and five supervisory participants. Data were collected using a validated, researcher-developed questionnaire, open-ended questions, and interviews, and analyzed through descriptive statistics, multiple regression, Welch’s t-test, and thematic analysis. Findings revealed high teacher self-efficacy (M = 3.99), SEL integration, and teacher effectiveness. SEL integration significantly and positively predicted content knowledge and pedagogy (R² = .154), assessment and reporting (R² = .520), and learning environment (R² = .537), whereas teacher self-efficacy showed no statistically significant unique contribution after accounting for SEL integration. Teachers’ and supervisors’ assessments showed no significant differences. Challenges included learner disengagement, language barriers, diverse learning needs, inadequate instructional resources, insufficient training, and monitoring difficulties. Professional commitment, instructional adaptability, supportive relationships, and administrative assistance facilitated implementation. The study recommends sustained SEL-focused professional development, differentiated instruction, strengthened supervision, and systematic learner monitoring. It supports Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education), 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), and 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through inclusive learning recovery, socio-emotional support, and teacher welfare. Its sustainability contribution lies in informing institutional capacity-building, equitable educational opportunities, and continuing professional support for effective ARAL implementation.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is increasingly recognized as an important component of elementary education, supporting students’ social-emotional development, engagement, well-being, and academic learning. However, the relationships among teacher social-emotional competence, learning climate, implementation quality, and student outcomes remain insufficiently integrated, particularly in the Indonesian context. This study aims to synthesize literature on these relationships and examine their implications for SEL implementation in Indonesian elementary schools. A narrative literature review was conducted using an existing source corpus supplemented by relevant peer-reviewed literature. The synthesis examined major themes concerning teacher competence, classroom practices, learning climate, student outcomes, implementation conditions, and contextual adaptation. The findings suggest that teacher competence is associated with the quality of SEL enactment, while a supportive learning climate provides a context for student participation and social-emotional learning. Implementation quality and cultural context also shape how SEL is adapted and sustained. These relationships should not be interpreted as a universally established causal pathway. The review highlights the need for context-responsive teacher development, school-level support, and rigorous evaluation of SEL practices. Future empirical research in Indonesian elementary schools should investigate these relationships using longitudinal and mixed-methods approaches.
INTRODUCTION: The PEACE Pack, originally devised to address bullying in secondary (high) schools, has demonstrated efficacy in several countries. The 4th edition now includes social-emotional learning and has been adapted (co-designed with teachers and students) for primary (elementary) schools, but not previously evaluated with this younger age group. As many young people now acquire personal phones at this age, it covers cyberbullying as well as 'traditional' bullying. METHODS: This effectiveness study evaluated the program with 826 students (mean age 9.7 years) in Australia. Wellbeing (level of happiness and number of good friends), frequency of being bullied, and self-efficacy for coping with bullying were measured before and after the program and at 3-month follow-up. RESULTS: A large effect was found for reduction in bullying frequency for the most severely affected students (bullied once a week or more often before the program, being a quarter of the sample). The percentage of this subsample still being bullied this frequently at 3-month follow-up was 33.4%, a reduction of 66.6%. Most other effects of the program were statistically significant but very small, although there was a general pattern of significant linear trends towards 'improvement'. No evidence was found for a suggested 'healthy context paradox'. CONCLUSIONS: The PEACE Pack, as modified for primary school students, strongly reduced bullying frequency for the most severely affected students, indicating that the program was fulfilling its core function. In general, other measures improved slightly after the program and were sustained or still improving at the 3-month follow-up. SO WHAT?: The PEACE Pack shows promise as a primary-school anti-bullying program that has sustained effects. It includes cyberbullying and social-emotional learning and is designed to be engaging for all students. Being curriculum-based, it stands to benefit from students' relationships with their regular teachers within the broader school context.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is an essential approach in Physical Education (PJOK) to enhance students' self-confidence and motor skills. This study aims to examine the implementation of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) based on the CASEL framework to improve self-confidence and candle pose (sikap lilin) skill among Grade X.3 students at SMA YP Unila. This study used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method based on Kemmis & Taggart model consisting of two cycles with 36 students as subjects. Data were collected using observation sheets, self-confidence questionnaires, field notes, and documentation. The results showed that the application of SEL significantly increased students' self-confidence from an average of 58.3% (moderate) in pre-cycle, to 72.5% (good) in Cycle I, and reached 86.4% (very good) in Cycle II. Classical mastery of the candle pose skill increased from 41.7% (15 students) in pre-cycle, to 66.7% (24 students) in Cycle I, and achieved 88.9% (32 students) in Cycle II. In conclusion, Social Emotional Learning is effective in increasing self-confidence and physical performance in gymnastics learning.
The Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC), the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI), and the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (FINEEC) have recently actively sought to identify and produce means and tools to support socio-emotional learning and well-being among children in early childhood education. According to reports conducted by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish National Agency for Education, there is a need for a more research related to research-based intervention methods in ECE. The aim of this descriptive review is to highlight Finnish peer reviewed intervention research and find out how teacher-child interaction skills are described within it. The findings indicate that Finnish intervention research is relatively recent, and that all intervention programs are targeted at entire groups of children. The intervention studies (n = 18) were evenly divided into descriptions of method implementation, the strengthening the professional competence of ECE and care personnel and the supporting the socio-emotional skills among children and ECE and care personnel. Teacher competence was enhanced through training that emphasized theoretical knowledge, its binding into practice, and shared reflection. Approximately half of the interventions were based on positive psychology. The role of guardians in interventions was limited. The descriptions of the teacher-child interaction were strongly focused on emotional support. According to the results, the core of teacher-child interaction lies in the teacher’s active role: the teacher is not merely available to the child but acts as an active agent in creating learning opportunities for each child. Supporting the child relies largely on the teacher’s own teacher-child interaction skills and their ability to appropriately use and apply materials. Therefore, strengthening teachers’ own socio-emotional competence and professional capacity is essential within interventions. Providing stronger support for children with greater needs in socio-emotional learning also requires more individualized interventions. Ultimately, children’s socio-emotional learning and competencies, as well as the learning environments that support them, are nurtured by ECE teachers and other ECE and care personnel.

Over the past decade, there has been a surge in mental health challenges among adolescents. While social and emotional learning (SEL) programs are positioned to bolster young people's social, emotional, and academic success and mental health, too few SEL programs center adolescent development in the present context, largely ignoring the realities and needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQ2SIA+, and students with disabilities. To fill this gap and need for transformative SEL, we hosted a series of focus groups with fifteen BIPOC middle schoolers to ask what they need to belong and thrive at school, given our belief that the youth most marginalized carry the genius to transform schools for every student. In this paper, we share their insights on how educators can create learning environments that ensure their safety, honor their humanity, cultivate joy, and foster their social, emotional, and academic well-being through transformative SEL and liberatory teaching practices. Youth shared easy-to-implement examples of how educators can nurture relationships with students, create safe and caring classroom environments, humanize education, and advance social justice and civic engagement. Based on what we learned from youth, we urge SEL program developers and educators to start by discovering who young people are and what they need to flourish socially, emotionally, and academically, then to use what students share to inform instructional practice, create and select academic content, guide interactions, and build communities where students feel a sense of trust, belonging, and care.
Developing creative competencies has become a major priority in primary education, yet existing studies have primarily examined the effectiveness of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) independently, offering limited explanation of the mechanisms through which these approaches jointly foster creativity. This study developed and evaluated a Mechanism-Based Social-Emotional Problem-Based Learning (MB-SEPBL) model that conceptualises socio-emotional competencies as the central mechanisms linking authentic problem-solving experiences with creative competency development. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group design was employed involving 180 primary school students from three Indonesian public schools, comprising an experimental group (n = 90) and a control group (n = 90). Students in the experimental group received MB-SEPBL instruction, whereas the control group followed conventional teacher-centred learning. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, independent-samples t -tests, ANCOVA, Linear Mixed-Effects Modelling, Hedges’ g , and bootstrap mediation analysis (5,000 resamples). Baseline equivalence indicated no significant pre-intervention differences between groups ( t (178) = −0.69, p = .493). After controlling for baseline performance, ANCOVA demonstrated a highly significant intervention effect ( F (1,177) = 334.75, p < .001, partial η 2 = .654), while the Linear Mixed-Effects Model confirmed a significant Group × Time interaction (β = 7.93, p < .001). The intervention produced a large posttest effect (Hedges’ g = 0.90) and a very large gain effect (Hedges’ g = 2.73). Bootstrap mediation analysis further identified a significant indirect effect (3.21, 95% CI = 2.48–4.07, p < .001), supporting the proposed socio-emotional learning mechanism. These findings demonstrate that MB-SEPBL not only substantially improves primary school students’ creative competencies but also provides a mechanism-based explanation of how authentic problem solving, socio-emotional activation, collaborative inquiry, and reflective knowledge construction interact to generate creative learning outcomes.
Social-emotional learning (SEL) is increasingly recognised as an important approach to adolescent mental health promotion in school settings. However, evidence regarding culturally adapted and technology-supported SEL interventions in non-Western educational contexts remains limited. This study reports the expert-validation and pilot-feasibility components of the REAL™ (Read Emotion and Learn to Regulate) module, a culturally adapted, virtual reality (VR)-integrated SEL intervention developed for Malaysian lower-secondary students. These developmental phases preceded a subsequently completed and separately reported randomised controlled trial (RCT). A sequential two-phase design was used. In Phase 1, six Malaysian experts from psychiatry, psychology, education, and social-emotional learning completed a three-round Modified Delphi process evaluating 15 module structure and delivery components and 12 activity stations on a 5-point Likert scale. Content validity was assessed using the item-level content validity index (I-CVI), scale-level average content validity index (S-CVI/Ave), and interquartile range (IQR). In Phase 2, a single-session school-based feasibility pilot was conducted with 15 lower-secondary students, four facilitators, and one school administrator to assess practical implementation of one chapter from the initial 12-station module. In Round 1, the S-CVI/Ave across 15 module structure and delivery components was 0.92. In Round 2, five of 12 activity stations did not meet the I-CVI retention criterion of ≥0.83 (S-CVI/Ave = 0.65). Following module revision and reassessment, 11 of 12 stations met the retention criterion in Round 3. Manage Your Emotions VR improved following revision and was retained, whereas The Drama of Life received uniformly unfavourable ratings (I-CVI = 0.00) and was removed because of concerns regarding suitability, feasibility, and potential physical safety in school settings. The final S-CVI/Ave across the 11 retained stations was 0.85. The findings provide developmental evidence that informed refinement and subsequent evaluation of the REAL™ module. Pilot findings should be interpreted cautiously because of the small, teacher-selected, single-site sample and use of a researcher-developed feedback measure without established psychometric properties.
