INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR CLIL-ORIENTED PHYSICS INSTRUCTION IN DISPERSED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AT HIGHER MILITARY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

Olena Avramchuk; Світлана Тарасенко Information Technologies and Learning Tools, 2026, Vol. 115, Issue 5, pp. 66-80 https://doi.org/10.33407/itlt.v115i5.6528

Higher military educational institutions operating under dispersed learning conditions require effective digital approaches that support both professional training and foreign language development. Accordingly, this study examines the effectiveness of integrating interactive technologies and the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach into physics instruction through the use of Moodle, Google Meet, Google Forms, multimedia presentations, bilingual instructional materials, and video-based laboratory demonstrations. Modern military specialists require not only strong engineering knowledge but also the ability to use English-language technical resources throughout their professional careers. Consequently, physics instruction should integrate subject-specific content with foreign language development from the earliest stages of military education. English language proficiency plays a significant role in physics instruction, since much technical documentation, device manuals, scientific articles, and materials on military technology are provided in English. Considering this, applying the CLIL approach, which enables simultaneous acquisition of physics content and professional English terminology, is well justified. The research employed a quasi-experimental design supported by classroom observation, and comparative analysis. The study involved 69 first-year cadets, divided into an experimental and a control group. The experimental group was taught using a combination of interactive technologies, digital tools, and CLIL elements integrated into lectures, practical sessions, and laboratory work. The experimental group achieved a higher mean score (M = 73.79) than the control group (M = 57.85), indicating the positive impact of integrating interactive technologies and CLIL elements into physics instruction. The study confirms that integrating interactive technologies and CLIL enhances the effectiveness of physics instruction in dispersed learning environments and contributes to the development of both professional and language competencies required for modern military specialists.

Kansas City Brain Builders: associations between a multisectoral community language nutrition intervention and change in practices and growth in child language over two years

Charles R. Greenwood; Gabriela Guerrero; Alana G. Schnitz; Sandra Cintora; Christine Giancola; Judith J. Carta Frontiers in Public Health, 2026, Vol. 14, pp. 1986929 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2026.1986929

Background and objectives Health literacy in adulthood plays a major role in an individual’s ability to use health information to benefit their health. Social determinants in early childhood initiate the development of health literacy through newborn brain development and oral language acquisition. Both of these processes are promoted by stimulation from everyday interactions with parents/caregivers at home and in the community. Unequal access to language-learning opportunities during early childhood represents a modifiable developmental and social determinant of later educational and health outcomes. There are inequities in these time-sensitive interactions—specifically language-learning opportunities—across families in the population, which are social determinants of early literacy, achievement in school, and later-life education, health, and economic and social well-being across the life span. This gap is most pronounced among children who grow up in poverty in the United States and internationally. The healthcare system in the United States effectively reaches to nearly all infants; however, language-learning opportunities are not a focus during well-child visits. The term “Language Nutrition” (LN) was coined in prior research to refer to these developmentally rich interactions known to support brain and language growth in children younger than preschool age. We developed Kansas City Brain Builders (KCBB) to address this inequity by promoting LN broadly among families and children in a community so that all children have a more equitable home language environment. The purpose of this study is to report longitudinal empirical findings on families and children related to the implementation of KCBB, a public health approach to community change, over 2 years. Methods The evaluation involved two parallel longitudinal studies: the Community study and the Family study. The Community study assessed the implementation of a KCBB multisectoral community partnership to promote LN-friendly changes in local programs, practices, and policies. The Family study involved longitudinal assessments of a sample of 83 English- and Spanish-speaking families with children younger than 36 months of age, evaluating the KCBB impacts on parental behaviors and child growth in language skills. Results KCBB led to a high level of documented program implementation and substantial LN promotion throughout the community. Repeated parent assessments indicated that participants had received LN messages from multiple community sectors over time, increased their knowledge of the importance of LN, and used LN through storybook reading, verbal responsiveness, and teaching behaviors during interactions with their children. Growth in children’s early language skills was significantly associated with the amount of LN they received. Discussion/Conclusion KCBB is one of the few multisectoral interventions designed to promote community-wide change targeting LN. It is a manualized intervention that can be replicated by other communities. This study employed three levels of measurement such that change could be evaluated in a theoretical framework of influence from community engagement to parental behavior and growth in child language skills. Findings provide preliminary evidence that a multisectoral community approach can achieve broad reach and is associated with changes in caregiver practices and child language growth. Larger, controlled, and replicated studies are needed to establish causal effects and determine whether such approaches reduce disparities in language-learning opportunities.

Parenting Styles and Children's English-Speaking Ability in Four Bilingual Families: A Qualitative Study

Dinda Hanifa Dewi; Suci Kintamani; Bunga Istianah Maulida; Dara Dwi Kencana Indonesian Journal of Early Childhood Education Studies, 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.15294/ijeces.v15i1.30702

Parenting practices may shape young children's opportunities to develop English-speaking skills in bilingual family environments. This study aimed to explore parenting styles and parental communication practices in relation to children's English-speaking ability in four bilingual families in Indonesia. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through online semi-structured interviews with parents, naturalistic observations of parent-child interactions, and children's English-speaking activities, including storytelling and picture description. The findings indicated that three families demonstrated characteristics of authoritative parenting, including emotional warmth, regular language activities, and active parental involvement. These practices were accompanied by children's reported willingness and confidence to speak English. In contrast, one family demonstrated a more permissive approach, with less structured language exposure and less active parental involvement. The findings also highlighted the role of responsive communication, shared educational media activities, and consistent opportunities to use English in everyday interactions. Given the small sample and qualitative design, the findings provide contextual insights rather than evidence of causal effects. This study highlights the potential importance of supportive parenting practices in creating opportunities for young children to use English in bilingual family settings.

Effects of dialogic reading with Luganda primary 1 materials on children’s vocabulary and listening comprehension

David Kabugo Discover Education, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44217-026-02271-6

Dialogic reading structures teacher–child interaction around shared texts to support oral language development, yet its effects when integrated with familiar language curriculum materials in Ugandan Primary 1 classrooms remain underexamined. This parallel cluster-randomized trial evaluated a 10-week dialogic reading adaptation integrated into government-aligned Luganda Primary 1 pupil books and teacher guides. Twenty schools in central Uganda, each contributing one classroom, were randomized after baseline assessment to dialogic reading (10 clusters; 232 children) or usual instruction (10 clusters; 231 children). An independent statistician generated and implemented the concealed allocation sequence; outcome assessors were masked. Teachers in the intervention arm used PEER/CROWD-informed prompts within the curriculum’s “I do, We do, You do” sequence. Primary outcomes were Luganda vocabulary (0–20) and listening comprehension (0–12). Intention-to-treat multilevel models adjusted for baseline score, age, recorded sex, and classroom clustering, with Kenward–Roger small-sample inference and multiple imputation for missing post-test data. At post-test, adjusted vocabulary means were 12.6 (SE 0.36) and 9.4 (SE 0.35), respectively (difference 3.2, 95% CI 2.3–4.1; p < .001; Hedges’ g = 0.46). Adjusted listening-comprehension means were 7.8 (SE 0.21) and 6.3 (SE 0.20) (difference 1.5, 95% CI 0.4–2.6; p = .009; g = 0.31). These short-term effects support further evaluation of curriculum-embedded dialogic reading in Luganda-medium classrooms, including longer follow-up and implementation-cost studies.

ABSTRACT Early childhood represents a unique window for language learning. Previous research has established reliable links between parental speech and the pace of children's language development; however, much less is known about children's naturalistic experiences in early education centers. We utilized longform recordings and the LENA technology to examine the variation in preschool teacher speech and its links to children's productive vocabulary in government‐run early education centers in Slovenia. The sample included 80 children (2.5–4 years, 38 girls) and ~350 h of naturalistic data from 8 classrooms. Children's language environments were shaped by activity context, with “Morning Circle” being the most interactive and “Indoor Play” the least interactive activity. Adult words varied primarily at the classroom level, while conversational turns varied primarily at the individual child level. Conversational turns, but not the sheer amount of adult speech, were associated with children's productive vocabularies. Many children worldwide spend a significant amount of time in early education settings; our results underscore the importance of considering these contexts in debates around providing supportive language environments for all children.

Dense connectivity in networks of red-flag language milestones among high screen-time children

Ana María Ruiz‐Ruano García; Trine Flensborg‐Madsen; Jorge López Puga Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1754404

Introduction Screen time may influence language development during early childhood, although its effects may vary depending on contextual factors. While screen use can support development when guided by adults, excessive exposure has been associated with less favorable language outcomes. Methods Data from 16,914 children (51% girls, 78% White; M = 3.03 years, SD = 1.37) were obtained from the 2023 National Survey of Children’s Health. Networks of red-flag language milestones were estimated separately for children aged 1-2 and 3-5 years. Participants were classified according to World Health Organization (WHO) screen-time recommendations (<1 h/day vs. ≥1 h/day). Results Partially regularized network models revealed denser connectivity among language-development indicators in children with higher levels of screen exposure. This pattern was reflected in a greater number of network edges and fully connected subclusters and was particularly pronounced among children aged 3-5 years. Discussion The findings suggest that higher screen-time exposure is associated with more interconnected patterns of language-development difficulties during early childhood. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of language development in the context of children’s screen use and may provide useful insights for families, educational professionals, and policymakers interested in promoting healthy developmental environments and informed decisions regarding screen exposure.

Improving young learners’ language practice and engagement through the BalaTalk digital platform

Makhabbat Baimenova; G.S. Mailybayeva; Beibitkul S. Karimova Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1840920

Introduction Young learners require repeated exposure, active participation, and sufficient time-on-task to develop vocabulary and oral language competence in Kazakh and Russian. Traditional primary classrooms, however, may not provide every pupil with frequent vocabulary repetition, immediate feedback, and equal opportunities for oral participation. This study examined the short-term effectiveness of the BalaTalk digital learning platform as a supplementary tool for language practice among third-grade pupils in Kazakhstan. Methods A quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design was employed with 75 pupils from six intact classes across three schools. The intervention lasted one school week. Pupils in the experimental group used BalaTalk for 15-20 minutes per day during regular lessons, whereas pupils in the control group received traditional instruction without the platform. The assessed outcomes included vocabulary performance, oral speaking task performance evaluated using an analytical speaking rubric, and behavioral engagement operationalized as time-on-task. Teacher questionnaire responses and written parent feedback were collected as supplementary qualitative evidence. Results Compared with the control group, the experimental group demonstrated larger immediate gains in vocabulary performance, oral speaking task performance, and time-on-task. Teacher and parent feedback also indicated increased pupil interest, greater willingness to repeat words, and more active participation in short language-learning tasks. Discussion The findings suggest that short, multimodal, teacher-guided digital microtasks may facilitate immediate lexical activation, oral participation, and behavioral engagement in primary language classrooms. The study contributes to digital language learning research by examining a locally developed platform in a Kazakh-Russian bilingual school context and by integrating vocabulary, oral task performance, and time-on-task within a single classroom-based intervention. However, because the intervention lasted only one week and intact classes were assigned to the study conditions, the findings should be interpreted as exploratory evidence of short-term effectiveness rather than proof of sustained language development.

Differentiated instruction in EFL classrooms: teacher beliefs, perceived professional agency, and teacher educator perspectives in Türkiye

Hüsnü Alp Balaban; Derya Girgin Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1923021

Introduction Differentiated instruction (DI) requires teachers to interpret learner diversity and make adaptive pedagogical decisions within the opportunities and constraints of their professional contexts. This study examined how secondary school English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and teacher educators in Türkiye understood and experienced DI, with particular attention to teacher beliefs, perceived professional agency, and motivational considerations. Methods This qualitative interpretive phenomenological study involved semi-structured interviews with 14 EFL teachers and six teacher educators. Data were analyzed through an inductive, interpretive form of thematic analysis informed by Braun and Clarke’s six-phase procedure. Results Both participant groups understood DI as an inclusive and ethically responsive approach addressing differences in learner readiness, interests, language proficiency, learning pace, and support needs. Teachers associated DI with stronger student engagement, motivation, participation, and language development, but reported a persistent mismatch between their pedagogical intentions and their capacity to act on them. Large classes, limited planning time, curriculum rigidity, resource inequalities, and examination pressures constrained adaptive decision-making and weakened perceived professional agency. Teacher educators similarly identified a gap between pre-service teachers’ conceptual knowledge and their ability to respond flexibly to learner diversity in authentic classrooms. Discussion The findings conceptualize DI as a contextually negotiated practice shaped by the interaction of teacher beliefs, professional agency, motivational commitment, teacher preparation, and institutional conditions. The study highlights the need for practice-based teacher education, sustained professional learning, and organizational environments that enable psychologically responsive and inclusive EFL instruction.

Input and uptake for complex syntactic structures in child language development: Implementing structural priming with diverse learner populations

Jiuzhou Hao; Patrick Sturt; Jason Rothman; Vicky Chondrogianni Cognition, 2026, Vol. 278, pp. 106734 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cognition.2026.106734

Language development depends on both the quantity of linguistic input children receive and their ability to uptake input, yet the relationship between these two factors remains unclear. This study adopted the structural priming paradigm to examine how input and uptake shape syntactic development in three groups of Mandarin-speaking children aged 5–9 years ( N = 75, N female = 39): neurotypical monolinguals (optimal input and uptake), monolinguals with Developmental Language Disorder (optimal input, reduced uptake), and Mandarin-English heritage bilinguals (reduced input, optimal uptake). All groups had acquired the target non-canonical structures (the BA-, BEI-, and OSV-constructions). However, reduced input and reduced uptake were associated with distinct production patterns. Heritage bilinguals produced more canonical structures (the SVO-construction), whereas monolingual children, particularly those with Developmental Language Disorder, favoured the BA-construction, suggesting differences in underlying learning mechanisms and production strategies that may be shaped by their language (learning) experience. Moreover, while richer input enhanced uptake, reduced input did not diminish it, suggesting input quantity and processing ability play separable yet interacting roles in development.

Speech and Language Therapy for Communication Delays in Children with Genetic Disorders: A Systematic Review

Dika Rhousnaka; Kevin Septia Pradiansyah; Aqshal Ilham Fahliza; Sri Utami Asmarani; Heni Heryani; Fitri Arofiati; … Journal of Midwifery and Health Sciences, 2026, Vol. 9, Issue 3, pp. 244-255 https://doi.org/10.62425/esbder.1728292

Communication disorders in children with genetic abnormalities significantly affect their social interaction, language development, and academic performance. These impairments, often stemming from neurodevelopmental disruptions, necessitate targeted interventions such as Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) to support their communication skills. This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness of speech therapy on verbal communication abilities in children with genetic disorders. A systematic search was conducted across seven databases—PubMed, ProQuest, Garuda, JSTOR, ScienceDirect, CNKI, and Wiley—covering studies published from 2020 to 2025. Eligible studies involved children with genetic disorders receiving speech-language therapy interventions. The PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) method was among the approaches assessed. Verbal communication outcomes were measured using tools such as the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. Study selection followed PRISMA guidelines, and quality was appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD420250645279). Seven studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing 218 participants. Most interventions reported improvements in verbal communication. The PROMPT method, delivered in 30–60-minute sessions over 10 weeks, demonstrated significant effectiveness, especially in randomized controlled trials. Speech-language therapy, particularly using the PROMPT method, is effective in enhancing verbal communication in children with genetic disorders. These findings support the integration of structured, evidence-based speech interventions into early rehabilitation programs to improve communication outcomes.

روش PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) از جمله رویکردهای ارزیابی‌شده بود.

Children with autism spectrum disorder may experience developmental difficulties in the areas of social communication and interaction. This study aims to investigate the effect of child-centered play therapy on the development of social communication skills in children with autism spectrum disorder. The study group consists of children aged 3-6 years with autism spectrum disorder. A quasi-experimental design was employed for the study. In the experimental group, child-centered play therapy was applied to 5 children with autism spectrum disorder for 15 weeks, 3 sessions per week, for a total of 45 sessions. ‘Social Communication Checklist-Revised for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder’ and the “Denver-II Developmental Screening Test” were used as instruments for data collection. According to the findings of the study, the Mann–Whitney U test conducted on the post-test scores of the experimental and control groups revealed statistically significant differences in all sub-dimensions of the Social Communication Checklist. Significant differences were found between the groups in social participation (Z = −2.627, p < .05, r = .83), expressive language (Z = −2.617, p ≤ .05, r = .83), receptive language (Z = −2.739, p < .05, r = .87), and imitative play (Z = −2.643, p < .05, r = .84). Regarding the Denver II Developmental Screening Test, a statistically significant difference was also found between the groups in the personal-social subscale (Z = −2.730, p < .05, r = .86). However, no statistically significant difference was observed in the language development subscale (Z = −1.586, p > .05). The results revealed that child-centered play therapy has a significant effect on the development of social communication skills in children with autism spectrum disorder. Research findings show that child-centred play therapy brings about significant improvements in the social communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorder. The progress observed in the experimental group supports the idea that play-based approaches can be an effective tool in early intervention programmes.

Inflectional Morphology Development and Its Association With Parental Input: Evidence From Kannada-Speaking Preschool Children

Megha K Nakshathri; Sunila John; Gopee Krishnan; Shivani Tiwari Journal of Child Language, 2026, pp. 1-18 https://doi.org/10.1017/s0305000926100981

Abstract Morphological development is a crucial component of early language acquisition. This study examined developmental changes in types and tokens of inflectional morphemes produced among 214 typically developing Kannada-speaking preschool children and their parents. Inflectional use was elicited through a story retelling task and analyzed in child’s and parental speech. Results showed developmental increase in both types and tokens of inflectional morphology production in children, indicating that preschool years constitute an important phase of inflectional systems in Kannada, an agglutinative language. Parental inflectional production remained relatively stable across age groups, while only the variety of parental inflections significantly predicted children’s output, emphasizing the role of input richness over frequency. Children produced high functional load markers (namely dative case, tense, and person–number–gender agreement), more frequently than optional or irregular forms. Overall, findings support usage-based theories with educational and clinical relevance. These findings, however, warrant future validation across other naturalistic tasks.

Background Children are increasingly exposed to digital media from an early age. Screen exposure has been linked to poorer parent–child interactions, and less optimal language, cognitive, motor, and socio-emotional development. However, few studies have explored these relationships specifically in children born preterm. Methods Sixty-four very preterm infants (VPT; <32 weeks gestation) were assessed at 12-months corrected age. Data on media use within families and infant screen exposure were measured using the Family Media Use questionnaire. Psychomotor development, socio-emotional functioning, and tactile exploration abilities were evaluated using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development III (BSID III) and experimental tasks. Results At 12 months of age, most parents (72%) reported using screens in the presence of their child, with an average daily duration of 1 h. Furthermore, 39% of VPT infants were directly exposed to screens, averaging 4 h per week. No difference was observed in BSID III scores between infants exposed to screens and those who were not. Furthermore, across the entire cohort, no significant association was found between screen exposure and developmental outcomes. However, among infants exposed to screens, greater direct screen exposure was negatively associated with cognitive and language scores (ρ = −0.34, p = 0.048; ρ = −0.56, p = 0.002, respectively) as well as to tactile exploration (ρ = −0.39, p = 0.02), but not to prosocial behavior or joint attention. These associations remained significant after controlling gestational age at birth and parents' socio-economic status. Conclusions Early direct screen exposure in VPT infants is associated with lower language and cognitive performance, and reduced tactile exploration, highlighting potential developmental implications even within the first year. No associations were observed in socio-emotional skills suggesting that these aspects may evolve differently or become apparent later in development. The effects of screen exposure on the development of infants born VPT have not been extensively studied, and further research is needed to support families in offering alternatives to screen use.

Speech Language and Communication Needs and Educational Outcomes in Children in Care: A Secondary Data Analysis

S. Savi-Karayol; N. Botting; G. Morgan First Language, 2026, pp. 01427237261479804 https://doi.org/10.1177/01427237261479804

Children in care have been shown to be at a higher risk of speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN). However, the presence of several co-occurring adversities means that SLCNs in this group are often overlooked. Improving understanding of SLCN vulnerability among children in care is therefore important for informing targeted interventions and supporting more positive educational and psychosocial outcomes. In our study, we examined the prevalence of SLCN among children in care and its association with educational attainment and social–emotional development as recorded in routine practice. A secondary analysis was conducted using routinely collected data recorded in a local authority database in an inner-city borough in South-East England. The eligible cohort comprised 141 children aged 5 to 14 years living in out-of-home care, of whom 78 had language screening data available. Measures included educational attainment in English, mathematics, and science, alongside social–emotional and behavioural functioning assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Forty-one percent of the sample presented with SLCN. Difficulties were evident across several domains, including word-finding, initiating and maintaining conversations, and peer relationships. Analyses revealed meaningful associations between SLCN, lower educational attainment, and poorer social–emotional outcomes. These findings provide preliminary group-level evidence of the higher prevalence and complexity of SLCN among children in care and their associations with educational and social–emotional outcomes. These results highlight the need for coordinated clinical, educational, and policy responses. These include improved recognition of multifaceted SLCN and timely referral to speech and language therapy services, to support more equitable outcomes for children in care.

The Role of Age and Instruction in Children's Learning of Vocabulary and Grammar

Wensi Zhang; Patrick Rebuschat; Padraic Monaghan Language Learning, 2026, pp. lang.70059 https://doi.org/10.1111/lang.70059

Abstract It is generally assumed that children and adults learn language through fundamentally different mechanisms: Children predominantly rely on implicit learning, and adults utilize more explicit strategies (Lichtman, 2016). However, little is known about when and how learners begin to benefit from explicit instruction over the course of language development. Addressing this gap, the present study responds to DeKeyser's (2012, 2013) call to investigate age–treatment interactions (ATIs) under highly controlled experimental conditions. Using a cross‐situational learning (CSL) paradigm, we trained 150 learners aged 8 to 13 to acquire both vocabulary and grammar in a complex artificial language under two instructional conditions: implicit and explicit. Results indicated that, in this task, 12‐to‐13‐year‐old children showed clearer benefits from explicit instruction than younger children, particularly for grammatical information related to word order. These findings shed light on the developmental stage at which explicit instruction may become beneficial for children's nonnative language (L2) learning.

Process-based digital assessment of children’s handwriting: a scoping review of graphomotor, orthographic, and educational indicators

Siyuan Liu; Norsafinar Rahim; Sai Ying Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1923428

Background Handwriting is central to children's written-language development, but conventional assessment usually emphasizes the completed product and provides limited information about the processes that produced it. Digital technologies can capture handwriting as an unfolding motor and orthographic activity. Objective This scoping review mapped technologies for capturing children's handwriting process data, the raw signals and derived features obtained, the assessment constructs supported by process measures, and their educational, developmental, and clinical applications. Methods Following scoping-review guidance and PRISMA-ScR, we searched Scopus, PubMed, ERIC, Web of Science Core Collection, and IEEE Xplore and conducted backward citation searching of 11 relevant review or framework articles. Of 198 reports sought for full-text assessment, one could not be retrieved, 197 were assessed, 39 were excluded, and 158 were included. All included reports were charted with the same 16-field framework. Independent verification by a second researcher covered randomly selected samples of 40 of 197 full-text eligibility decisions (20.3%; 97.5% agreement; Cohen's κ = 0.918) and 32 of 158 extractions (20.3%). Results Digitizing or graphics tablets were used in 136 reports (86.1%), and 117 (74.1%) used Wacom hardware. Position or trajectory (145, 91.8%) and time or timestamps (124, 78.5%) were the most common raw signals, followed by pen pressure or normal force (82, 51.9%) and pen-state or in-air information (71, 44.9%). Common derived feature families included speed or velocity (97, 61.4%), temporal or duration measures (84, 53.2%), spatial or geometric measures (67, 42.4%), and pressure- or force-derived measures (59, 37.3%). Developmental or normative characterization (75, 47.5%) and clinical characterization or differential assessment (74, 46.8%) were the most frequent applications. Latin-alphabetic handwriting appeared in 114 reports (72.2%), followed by Hebrew (23, 14.6%), Chinese (19, 12.0%), and Arabic (5, 3.2%). Conclusions Digital handwriting assessment is well established in process capture but less consistently translated into applied educational or clinical decisions. Classification performance should not be equated with diagnostic validity. A theory-informed and review-refined four-level framework organizes raw signals, derived features, assessment constructs, and empirical interpretation or action without implying a validated developmental or psychometric hierarchy.

Foundations for success: maximising impact by supporting protective factors for early communication development

Katelyn Melvin; Helén Smith; Kym Dunstan; Karly Green; Bridget Debattista Journal of Clinical Practice in Speech-Language Pathology, 2026, pp. 1-10 https://doi.org/10.1080/22000259.2026.2731059

This paper presents a model to guide speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to effectively respond to social determinants of health and protective factors that shape early communication development for Australian children. Aligned with contemporary early years policy frameworks, we discuss the SLP’s role in strategically strengthening the protective factors that enable language development across three ecological levels: child and family, community, and systems and society. By embracing this scope of practice, SLPs move beyond traditional service boundaries to partner with families, mobilise community resources, and advocate for systemic change that addresses health inequities. Developed with input from practicing SLPs working across diverse contexts, this work demonstrates both the necessity and feasibility of place-based innovation in speech-language pathology. It serves as a practical resource and catalyst for ongoing professional dialogue, inviting SLPs to consider how they can create meaningful, equitable impact on early communication development by addressing the social determinants that matter most.
