The Dynamics of Educators' Professional Competence Development through Assertive Communication in Junior High School Leadership

Nur Indah Fitriani; Harjito Harjito; Ghufron Abdullah Jurnal Ragam Pengabdian, 2026, Vol. 3, Issue 3, pp. 11606-11620 https://doi.org/10.62710/xf1cdq93

Teachers’ participation in professional development is often high, yet it does not always translate into classroom innovation, a persistent transfer-of-learning gap. This study explores how principals’ assertive communication was associated with teachers’ professional competence development in two junior high schools (one public, one private) in Brebes Regency, Indonesia. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was used: baseline teacher competence was descriptively mapped from the Ruang GTK platform and the Education Report (Rapor Pendidikan), followed by a qualitative phase with 22 purposively selected informants (principals, vice-principals, teachers, students, and parents). Data were gathered through surveys, interviews, observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using Miles et al.’s interactive model with triangulation. Baseline data showed high training participation (score 4) but stagnant instructional innovation and classroom management (scores 2–3). Four interactional dimensions of assertive communication emerged: directive transparency, dialogic respect, non-blaming corrective feedback, and facilitative advocacy. These were associated with reduced teacher defensiveness and greater openness to interactive and digital teaching, and varied with institutional readiness. The study frames assertive leadership as a dynamic system of instructional communication rather than a fixed trait. Given its two-school, non-causal design, the findings are context-specific; they suggest that sustaining competence requires structured post-training clinical supervision and a constructive feedback culture.

Implementing a Five-Phase Experiential-Based Deep Learning Model to Support Students' Conceptual Understanding of Force in Secondary School

Christo Vincentius Goni; Orbanus Naharia; Marianus Marianus; Kenny Setiawan Lahope; Tineke Makahinda; Darius Ladbam Lihu Lontar Physics Today, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 3, pp. 397-413 https://doi.org/10.26877/lpt.v5i3.979

Students' conceptual understanding of force is challenged by persistent difficulties in interpreting interactions, resultant forces, and changes in motion. This study examined the classroom implementation of a five-phase Experiential-Based Deep Learning (EBDL) instructional model designed to connect firsthand observation with reflection, evidence-based explanation, and transfer. A quasi-experimental nonequivalent pretest–posttest design involved 40 eighth-grade students at one Indonesian junior secondary school, with 20 students receiving EBDL and 20 receiving Direct Instruction. Conceptual understanding was assessed using five essay items on force; expert content ratings yielded an overall Aiken's V of 0.870 after recalculation. Available group-level posttest results favored the EBDL group (M = 85.85, SD = 5.51) over the control group (M = 81.30, SD = 7.00). The reported Mann–Whitney test indicated a between-group difference (U = 124.00, Z = −2.06, p = 0.039, r = 0.326). The model's distinctive instructional contribution is its explicit progression from discrepant experiences through reflective meaning-making and force-based reasoning to contextual application and transfer. However, aggregate posttest results do not establish which cognitive process benefited most, whether individual misconceptions were corrected, or the magnitude of pretest-to-posttest change. These findings support further testing of EBDL as a structured, context-sensitive alternative for junior secondary force instruction, with stronger item-level and implementation evidence required before wider causal or generalizable claims are made.

This article develops a professional development approach that uses digital management projects to strengthen the managerial competence of vocational education leaders. The aim is to design a mechanism for transferring learning from a short training module into everyday management practice. The article employed documentary analysis of theoretical and methodological materials and compared them with primary sources on constructive alignment, the transfer of acquired knowledge to professional practice, and digital competence frameworks. The units of analysis are curriculum topics, allocated learning time, management actions and verifiable practical outputs. The documented module comprises twelve hours, equally divided between theoretical and practical sessions; its table does not specify independent study hours. A sequence of problem identification, solution modelling, bounded implementation and reflective analysis is proposed. The classroom module is linked to twenty-four hours of workplace project activity, producing a proposed thirty-six-hour pathway. Expected outputs include a decision rationale, a data dictionary, a monitoring table and an improvement plan. The contribution is an explicit instructional connection between learning a digital tool and substantiating a management decision. The proposed pathway has not undergone a new experimental evaluation. Conditions for subsequent testing and limitations of the design are specified

Transfer-Related Cognitive and Learning Profiles Across Predominant MOBA Roles in Novice Esports Players

Novice Esports

Meriç BOYNUKARA; Özcan Özgür Dursun Akdeniz Spor Bilimleri Dergisi, 2026, Vol. 9, Issue 1, pp. 1-16 https://doi.org/10.38021/asbid.2039229

Esports research increasingly recognizes that multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games contain differentiated team roles, yet it remains unclear whether these role differences correspond to cognitive and learning-related profiles beyond immediate gameplay. This exploratory secondary analysis examined whether naturally emerging predominant roles were associated with post-intervention transfer-related outcomes among novice League of Legends players. Here, transfer-related refers to outcomes assessed beyond immediate gameplay and does not imply causal demonstration of transfer. Data came from the experimental arm of an eight-week quasi-experimental intervention requiring at least 18 hours of gameplay. Of 42 experimental participants, one predominantly played jungle and was excluded because this created a single-participant category. The final sample comprised 41 undergraduates classified as top lane (n = 5), mid lane (n = 15), marksman/ADC (n = 12), or support (n = 9). Outcomes included EEG-based attention-related engagement, working-memory-related theta activity, and theta/alpha-based cognitive load recorded during a standardized dual n-back task, together with 21st-century learner skills and content-specific learning performance. After z-standardization, Euclidean distances were analyzed using PERMANOVA with 9,999 permutations, principal coordinates analysis, and a multivariate dispersion diagnostic. The omnibus PERMANOVA did not detect statistically significant role-based differentiation, pseudo-F(3, 37) = 0.941, p = .526, R² = .071. PCoA showed substantial overlap, no statistically detectable dispersion differences were found, and the baseline sensitivity analysis was non-significant. These findings suggest that functional role differentiation within MOBA gameplay should not be assumed to produce corresponding differentiation in transfer-related outcomes among novice players with relatively short role exposure.

A conceptual framework: what is impactful learning? A case study of teaching organic chemistry for pre-medical students

Lam H. Nguyen Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.2002414

Organic chemistry occupies a contested place in pre-health education: required of nearly all premedical students, experienced as difficult, and justified on grounds that it “teaches you to think”, a claim too vague to evaluate or teach toward deliberately. Existing frameworks do not resolve this tension. This paper adopts a conceptual analysis approach, drawing on Ausubel's rote/meaningful learning distinction and the traditional transfer-of-learning literature, to propose impactful learning as a third pedagogical stage following rote and meaningful learning. Impactful learning is defined as the stage where procedural and reasoning skills exercised in mastering a discipline's content become generalizable cognitive tools deployable outside that discipline. Three key concepts are examined: the unit of transfer (the cognitive procedure, not the content), the extraction dimension (detachment of a practiced operation from the content that trained it), and the conditions under which such transfer becomes pedagogically achievable. These concepts are developed through three organic chemistry tasks as worked examples—resonance structures as constraint-satisfaction reasoning, reaction mechanisms as iterative-hypothesis testing, and stereochemistry as symbolic-to-spatial translation—each mapped onto a corresponding form of clinical reasoning. We further propose a four-step explicit transfer scaffolding model (Name, Perform, Bridge, Generate) as a testable methodological companion, grounded in Gick and Holyoak's analogical transfer research and Detterman's critique of spontaneous far transfer. The paper argues that naming impactful learning as a distinct pedagogical target, rather than assuming it as an automatic byproduct of meaningful understanding, has direct implications for instructional design and assessment in service courses across STEM disciplines.

From reducing cognitive load to sustaining participation: psychological mechanisms, evidence, and stage-matched pedagogy for university tennis beginners

Jing Wang; Paramasivam Muthusamy Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1940031

University tennis beginners face simultaneous technical, perceptual, tactical, and psychological demands that may exceed their attentional resources, challenge perceived competence, and diminish engagement. This mini-review synthesizes evidence on cognitive load, self-efficacy, autonomous motivation, multidimensional engagement, ecological dynamics, and beginner tennis pedagogy to explain how instructional design can support both skill acquisition and sustained participation. Evidence on equipment scaling and game-based learning indicates that low-compression balls, smaller courts, simplified rules, and cooperative tasks can increase the number of playable exchanges, enjoyment, and early confidence, although direct tests of cognitive load reduction are scarce and university-specific evidence remains limited. Constraints-led practice can then connect stroke production with perception, positioning, decision-making, and tactical intention, whereas selective technical instruction is most useful when a diagnosable movement feature restricts accuracy, consistency, or transfer. On this basis, this review proposes an evidence-informed, stage-matched (readiness-informed) conceptual framework that organizes individually supported instructional functions into a diagnostic, skill-specific, overlapping, and reversible structure rather than an empirically validated sequence: Stage 1 reduces entry barriers and builds credible mastery experiences; Stage 2 develops adaptive exploration and transfer; and Stage 3 refines limiting technical features while progressively restoring standard conditions. Engagement is positioned as a proposed mediating process linking psychological mechanisms to learning and participation. The framework extends evaluation beyond immediate performance toward retention, transfer, confidence under challenge, and sustained participation as an important but currently undertested outcome. Controlled and longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate the proposed mechanisms, pathways, and boundary conditions across diverse university settings.

Associations of calligraphy practice with executive function and transfer: a cross-sectional comparison of professional calligraphers and beginners

Xiaoping Su Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1932736

Introduction Calligraphy practice is a complex activity involving visuospatial analysis, fine-motor control, attention, and self-monitoring. This study examined cross-sectional associations among calligraphy-practice experience, executive-function (EF) performance, near- and far-transfer task performance, visuospatial structural processing (VSP), and selfregulation (SR). Methods We compared 310 professional calligraphers with 310 beginners. Groups were defined using prespecified criteria for training duration, current practice, and professional background; the Calligraphy Proficiency Validation Score (CVS) was used only after grouping as an independent validation measure. After screening, 338 professionals and 312 beginners were eligible. Random subsampling in SPSS 26.0, conducted before outcome analysis and based only on group membership, produced two groups of 310. Adjusted cross-sectional models examined group differences, Practice–EF associations, near- versus fartransfer differences, a bootstrap indirect association through VSP, and a Practice × SR interaction. Results Professionals had higher adjusted EF ( B = 0.415), near-transfer ( B = 0.548), and far-transfer ( B = 0.248) scores than beginners. The between-group difference was larger for near than far transfer (Group × transfer type B = 0.300). Practice was positively associated with EF ( B = 0.278). VSP showed a significant bootstrap indirect association between Practice and EF, and the Practice × SR term was statistically significant. Discussion The findings describe cross-sectional associations and conditional statistical patterns rather than directional or causal effects. Longitudinal and intervention studies are needed to establish temporal ordering and causality.
