Geometry problem-solving requires learners to coordinate conceptual knowledge, spatial representation, strategy use and the regulation of cognition, motivation and effort. This systematic review examined how self-regulated learning (SRL) operates in geometry problem-solving and which learner, task, social, instructional and developmental conditions shape it. A Scopus search reported according to PRISMA 2020 identified 1,298 records; database limits left 529, and eligibility screening retained 32 empirical studies published from 2021 to 2026. Twelve studies involved undergraduates or pre-service teachers, seven involved school pupils, one involved kindergarten children and 12 did not state the educational level in the extracted records. Study quality was appraised with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, and thematic synthesis identified four themes: planning and strategic regulation; monitoring, control and strategy adaptation; learner characteristics and outcomes; and instructional scaffolding and technology. Successful performance was associated with problem representation, strategy selection, monitoring, error detection, adaptation and evaluation. Diagnostic and elaborated feedback, content-focused peer feedback and supportive scaffolding were more informative than the presence of technology. Evidence on learner characteristics was mainly correlational, and evidence on young learners was thin. The review proposes a Process-Oriented Framework of Self-Regulated Geometry Problem-Solving that links input conditions, forethought, performance regulation, reflection, and outcomes and it is best supported for adolescent and adult learners. Future research should combine self-report with behavioural, longitudinal and process-tracing evidence and develop age-appropriate SRL measures for young children.
This study contributes to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) by examining how case-based teaching and threshold concepts promote culturally inclusive pedagogical practices among pre-service teachers (PSTs). Our research design reflects SoTL principles by taking a systematic, transparent, iterative, and collaborative approach to collecting, analysing, and sharing data. Our work is explicitly aligned with theoretical frameworks, and we address unresolved issues in order to facilitate transformative learning. We aimed to explore how PSTs perceive culturally inclusive pedagogy and professional competence in a case-based course. Three key findings emerged: increased awareness of classroom diversity, a change in the PSTs’ understanding of culturally inclusive teaching, and resistance to exploratory learning designs. Many PSTs demonstrated transformative learning and sound professional judgment. However, some expressed resistance and uncertainty, underscoring the importance of scaffolding and support. The findings align with the literature on threshold concepts as gateways to boundary crossing and a deeper understanding of diversity in SoTL. The results highlight the potential of case-based teaching to encourage metacognitive reflection and to promote inclusive educational practices in teacher education programs. The study demonstrates that designing inquiry-based learning activities that integrate case studies and threshold concepts can facilitate critical reflection and metacognition among PSTs.
The article provides a theoretical substantiation of innovative approaches to the methodological training of higher education applicants in the context of current transformation processes in science and education. Based on the analysis of scientific works by Ukrainian and foreign researchers (V. Kremen, M. Kudla, O. Tsuniak, Ye. Lodatko, as well as publications indexed in Scopus and Web of Science), three interrelated vectors for improving methodological training are identified – technological, interdisciplinary, and digital – and their integrative significance for the formation of research competence of future specialists is substantiated. Unlike existing approaches that mostly consider these vectors in isolation, the author proposes a vision of their systemic interaction: the technological vector ensures the gradual mastering of research methods through practice-oriented learning; the interdisciplinary vector expands the methodological toolkit by integrating knowledge from related fields (sociology, psychology, statistics, philosophy); the digital vector adapts research activities to the realities of the digital scientific environment (use of SPSS, R, Mendeley, cloud technologies). It has been proven that the synergy of these three vectors creates conditions for the development not only of operational research skills but also of scientific thinking as a metacognitive ability that determines the specialist's readiness for innovative activity. The criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of integrating the proposed approaches (motivational-value, cognitive-operational, and reflexive-creative) are determined. The results of the study can be used to update methodological curricula, develop methodological recommendations for teachers, and design blended learning models for the research training of applicants at the second and third educational levels.
Generative AI, and more precisely large language models, have nowadays rapidly become useful in education, professional work, and everyday tasks. While these systems offer notable benefits to make work efficient and improved accessibility, the recent evidence suggests that their usage has cognitive costs. This paper presents a structured review of 16 reviewed studies investigating the impact of Gen AI usage on cognitive offloading, metacognitive engagement, automation bias, and human skill. By studying experimental, survey-based, qualitative, and theoretical research, this review synthesizes several findings across several fields to identify recurring mechanisms through which GenAI usage reshapes cognition. Our analysis reveals a consistent pattern, where GenAI often improves short-term task performance, but it frequently minimizes effortful cognitive processing, diminishes self-regulation, and changes skill developments. Rather than constant de-skilling, this paper points out reconfiguration of skills, favoring efficiency-oriented competencies such as prompting and verification over generative reasoning and critical reflection. Our study further highlights these outcomes are not unavoidable but are strongly mediated by interaction design, educational practices, and socio-technical environments. By showing these effects as the “cost of convenience,” this paper contributes an integrative perspective on the cognitive effects of Gen AI and highlighting the ways to make AI design, education, and governance cognitively sustainable.
Generative artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the cognitive conditions of knowledge innovation. While human–AI collaboration improves the efficiency of knowledge production, it may also induce creators to outsourcing cognitive work to AI systems. This study conceptualized this tendency as task-level metacognitive disengagement, defined as the immediate reduction of planning, monitoring, and reflection within a specific AI-assisted task, and, drawing on metacognition theory, cognitive offloading theory and self-regulated learning theory, examined its impact on knowledge innovation quality, its psychological mechanism, and boundary conditions through four complementary experiments. Experiment 1 showed that higher AI assistance significantly increased metacognitive disengagement. Experiment 2 revealed that cognitive offloading partially mediated the relationship between AI assistance and metacognitive disengagement. Experiment 3 confirmed the negative effect of cognitive offloading on knowledge innovation quality, specifically on novelty, usefulness, and developability, with metacognitive disengagement partially mediating this effect. Experiment 4 tested the proposed moderated mediation model and found that task complexity strengthened, whereas individual AI literacy weakened, the negative indirect effect of cognitive offloading on knowledge innovation quality through metacognitive disengagement. These findings reveal a hidden cognitive cost behind the efficiency gains of human–AI collaboration and provide empirical evidence and theoretical implications for cultivating innovative talent and designing human–AI collaborative mechanisms in the era of artificial intelligence.
Higher education has historically operated under a paradigm of information scarcity, positioning universities as premier institutions for curating and transmitting knowledge. The convergence of digital hyper-abundance, algorithmic curation, and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has disrupted this model, producing what educators increasingly describe as a crisis of critical thinking in higher education. The purpose of this review is to examine how information abundance, algorithmic curation, and GenAI use may influence university students’ critical thinking, and to synthesise what this evidence implies for what universities teach and how they assess. Using a critical narrative review design with thematic synthesis, the review analyses 45 verified sources (empirical studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, conceptual works, and policy guidance) identified through citation chaining and targeted searches; empirical GenAI studies date from November 2022 to 2026, and foundational theoretical works from 1976 onward. The synthesis is anchored in an integrative framework that combines cognitive load and dual-process theory, cognitive offloading, scaffolding theory, self-regulated learning, and epistemic cognition, with critical thinking as the principal outcome. Five themes emerged: (1) information abundance appears to shift the central cognitive challenge from retrieval to evaluation; (2) unguided GenAI use is associated with reduced cognitive engagement and, in several experiments, with weaker independent performance once AI support is removed, although guardrailed designs appear to mitigate this; (3) fluent AI output can be mistaken for validated knowledge, and AI-detection tools are unreliable and biased; (4) lateral reading, guided AI use, and process-visible assessment have promising but uneven support; and (5) workload, equity, and policy constraints limit adoption. From these themes, the review derives the Fade–Visibility Matrix, which crosses AI support structure (persistent versus fading) with assessment design (product-only versus process-visible) to yield four diagnostic states. The evidence is early and methodologically uneven, but it is most consistent with a structural rather than individual explanation. Universities should therefore teach evaluation, verification, and metacognitive regulation explicitly, design AI support to fade, and redesign assessment so that the learning process, not only the finished product, can be observed.
Background: Complementary approach provides an opportunity for students to connect pre-class, in-class, and post-class activities. Objectives: This study examined the correlations and predictive effects of metacognition and attitude on learners' conceptual understanding in physics using a complementary approach. Method: A quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest, non-equivalent control group design was used. A sample of 173 natural science students from two Ethiopian secondary schools was randomly assigned to experimental (CAIM instruction) and control (traditional teaching) groups. Data were collected using FCCUT, MCQ, and LAS instruments and analyzed via Pearson correlations and hierarchical multiple regression at p = 0.05. Results: The two variables showed positive and statistically significant correlations with students' conceptual understanding of physics: metacognition (r = 0.30) and attitude (r = 0.31), p < 0.01. Further, both metacognition (R² = 0.15, f² = 0.08) and attitude (R² = 0.16, f² = 0.10), ΔR² = 0.08, p < 0.001, predicted 8% of the varience in conceptual understanding when CAIM was employed. Conclusion: We recommend that physics teachers could apply the CAIM when teaching physics, as it allows students to develop a positive correlation between the predictor variables and conceptual understanding, though their correlations are moderate.
This conceptual article explores practical ways in which college and university instructors can leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to support assessment as learning and develop students’ feedback literacy. Traditional assessment practices often focus on assessment for learning (informing instruction) or of learning (measuring outcomes), while assessment as learning—when students actively monitor and reflect on their own learning—receives less attention. AI can help instructors leverage assessment as a learning tool by generating work samples for student analysis and providing timely, actionable feedback that students can use to revise their work. When combined with instructor modeling, peer dialogue, and scaffolds such as guiding questions or graphic organizers, AI-supported feedback promotes metacognition, self-directed learning, and critical evaluation skills. The article provides practical guidance, including prompts and strategies for using AI to enhance student engagement with feedback, helping instructors create more efficient, effective, and student-centered practices that utilize assessments as learning tools.
This study examined whether metacognitive strategy training strengthens the contribution of an AI-based Socratic reflection system to pre-service teachers’ reflective practice. Study 1 used a 2 (metacognitive training: present vs. absent) × 2 (tool condition: AI-based Socratic scaffolding vs. traditional digital tools) randomized between-subjects design ( N = 60; n = 15 per cell). Written reflection quality at post-test was analyzed by ANCOVA with pre-test performance as the covariate. The metacognitive-training main effect was significant, F (1, 55) = 33.89, p < 0.001, η 2 p = 0.381, as was the tool-condition main effect, F (1, 55) = 9.63, p = 0.003, η 2 p = 0.149. More importantly, the metacognition × tool interaction was significant, F (1, 55) = 10.91, p = 0.002, η 2 p = 0.165. Under metacognitive training, AI-based Socratic scaffolding produced a significant model-estimated advantage over traditional digital tools (Δ M = 0.56, p < 0.001), whereas the tool difference was not significant without metacognitive training (Δ M = −0.03, p = 0.821). Study 2 examined dialogue logs from the two AI conditions. Participants who received metacognitive training generated a substantially larger proportion of higher-order prompts than participants who received placebo training (44.1% vs. 12.2%), t(28) = 7.14, p < 0.001, d = 2.61. These process data are consistent with the proposed account that metacognitive preparation changes how learners engage with AI, although they do not constitute a formal mediation test. The findings suggest that, within this configured Socratic AI environment, metacognitive preparation is an important condition for realizing higher-quality reflective practice.
BACKGROUNDS: Individuals with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) attending higher-education institutions face challenges in their everyday life. Nevertheless, research regarding participation and quality of life (QoL) in this population is limited. AIM: To explore determinants of participation and QoL in university students with probable DCD (pDCD) through structural equation modelling (SEM). METHODS: A cross-sectional comparative and correlational design. A random sample of 297 undergraduate university students was divided into three groups based on cutoff scores of the Adolescents & Adults Coordination Questionnaire: pDCD; n = 40, borderline pDCD (BpDCD) n = 45 and typically developing (TD) n = 212. Measures included self-report questionnaires relating to pDCD, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, executive functions (EF), including metacognition and behavioral regulation, as well as participation and QoL. RESULTS: Students with pDCD reported reduced participation and QoL and impairment in EF and ADHD compared to TD students. SEM results showed that pDCD had a direct significant effect on EF, ADHD symptoms and participation and an indirect effect on QoL, mediated most strongly by participation. ADHD and behavioral regulation had a direct effect on QoL, whereas the relationship between metacognition and QoL was mediated by participation. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Through a SEM model, this study demonstrated that pDCD in university students is associated with reduced participation and QoL, and emphasized the role of EF, ADHD and participation in explaining QoL. These findings offer important insights for the assessment and intervention of higher-education students with pDCD.
Effective self-regulated learning depends on metacognitive monitoring and control abilities, where learners monitor what they do not know and control their learning behaviour to address their knowledge gaps. However, children's metacognitive abilities are developing, which can hinder their ability to select relevant information effectively. This work examines whether providing feedback on children's knowledge can assist their metacognitive monitoring and control processes, improving their ability to target information-seeking to fill knowledge gaps. In two experiments, 5-9-year-old children (N = 203) completed a word-learning task on a tablet. They were then tested on their knowledge of the novel word-object associations and asked to report their (un)certainty in their answers. In the first experiment, children received feedback after each test trial. In both experiments, children received cumulative feedback at the end of the test. Next, they could select some of the objects to hear their labels again and were tested on their recognition of the label-object associations once more. In both experiments, feedback boosted children's ability to strategically seek information to fill their knowledge gaps. Children's information-seeking was better guided by feedback than by their own subjective uncertainty, indicating that feedback provides a valuable external means for metacognitive control. The kind of feedback provided, i.e., trial-by-trial or cumulative feedback, impacted children's metacognitive monitoring, while children's information seeking was predicted by both trial-by-trial and cumulative feedback. Overall, the findings underscore the role of feedback in fostering the development of metacognition and self-regulated learning in childhood.
The expanding integration of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education has heightened the need to identify learner competencies associated with academic achievement. This study examined the associations of metacognition, self-directed learning ability, and AI literacy with self-reported academic achievement among university students in the Republic of Korea. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted with 175 undergraduates from 11 universities between September 30 and November 1, 2025; 78.3% were enrolled in health-related majors. Metacognition, self-directed learning ability, and AI literacy were measured using the SMI, SDLI, and MAILS, respectively; academic achievement was measured as self-reported cumulative GPA on a 4.5-point scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, group comparisons, Pearson correlations, and hierarchical multiple regression with HC3 heteroscedasticity-robust standard errors. GPA differed by age, school life satisfaction, and AI-related course experience in unadjusted comparisons. Metacognition (r = .348, p < .001) and self-directed learning ability (r = .377, p < .001) were positively correlated with GPA, whereas AI literacy was not (r = .105, p = .167). In the adjusted six-predictor model, age ( β = .151, p = .023), AI-related course experience ( β = .145, p = .040), and self-directed learning ability ( β = .329, p = .023) were independently associated with GPA; metacognition and AI literacy were not. The model explained 20.0% of the variance (adjusted R 2 = .171). These findings identify self-directed learning ability as the only examined learner competency that remained significantly associated with GPA after adjustment. Longitudinal and intervention studies are needed before causal or mediational conclusions can be drawn.
Introduction Although instruments exist to assess complex thinking in college students, their application has limitations in specific disciplinary contexts, and no validated measure is available specifically to assess this construct in the research training of Peruvian engineering students. This study aimed to develop and validate the Complex Thinking Scale for Scientific Research (CTS-SR) among Peruvian engineering students. Methods An instrumental study was conducted with 506 university students divided into non-overlapping exploratory ( n = 250) and confirmatory ( n = 256) subsamples. The scale was initially developed from a five-dimensional theoretical framework comprising problemsolving, critical analysis, metacognition, systems analysis, and creativity. Results Exploratory analyses indicated that the initial dimensions converged empirically into two broader, interrelated domains: criticalstrategic reasoning and metacognitive self-regulation with systemic understanding. The final two-factor model comprised 23 items and showed adequate fit in the confirmatory sample (CFI = 0.964; RMSEA = 0.059) and high internal consistency ( ω = 0.944). Complex thinking was positively associated with satisfaction with studies and positive stress and showed a weak negative association with negative stress. Discussion The CTS-SR-23 provides preliminary, context-specific psychometric evidence for assessing complex thinking in scientific research among Peruvian engineering students. Because the final model involved additional item refinement within the CFA subsample, the 23-item version has not yet been independently cross-validated. Further validation using the unchanged CTS-SR-23 in independent samples and across academic disciplines and cultural contexts is warranted.
Professional observation ability is a foundational skill for preschool teachers, yet its cultivation has long faced the challenge of bridging theory and practice. Virtual simulation and authentic video offer new technological pathways to address this gap, but research on their sequential integration remains limited. This study adopted a design-based research-informed intervention approach, conducting four sequential workshops over six weeks with one natural class of 46 preschool teacher candidates. A mixed-methods design was employed, integrating group observation assignment scores (32 valid samples), questionnaires (34 students), and semi-structured interviews (9 students). In the initial skill acquisition phase, virtual simulation and authentic video demonstrated functional complementarity: virtual simulation was more conducive to stimulating active thinking (purposefulness dimension, p = 0.006), while authentic video showed an advantage in honing detail-capturing abilities (acuity dimension, p = 0.048) and higher-order cognitive skills (analysis and support dimensions, p < 0.05). During sequential exposure to authentic videos, analytical ability showed a "leap-plateau" pattern, supportive ability displayed continuous growth, while basic observation ability remained stable. Learners' experiences followed a trajectory from cognitive conflict to support seeking and then to metacognitive growth. This study provides preliminary support for the sequential integration model in enhancing preschool teacher candidates' observational skills, offering empirical insights for technology-enhanced teacher education. The findings suggest that teacher training programs should consider the complementary roles of different technological media across skill development stages.
Poetry is persistently perceived as more difficult than narrative prose among ESL/EFL learners, yet whether this difficulty is intrinsic to the genre or structurally mediated remains undertheorised. This study examined whether Grade 8 ESL/EFL learners’ poetry difficulty may be associated with institutional–cognitive misalignment rather than inherent genre complexity. Employing a convergent mixed-methods case study design, eleven Grade 8 students from a private school in Kathmandu, Nepal, completed controlled genre comparison tasks using thematically identical poetic and prose texts, alongside a 50-item Universal Design Learning (UDL)-aligned cognitive engagement instrument mapped onto Cattell–Horn–Carroll (CHC) domains. Within this bounded classroom context, descriptive patterns revealed a performance asymmetry: 54.54% of participants demonstrated at least partial success in prose comprehension, whereas 72.72% of participants failed the poetry task entirely. Cognitive profiling indicated a within-subject pattern of relatively higher engagement in Crystallised Knowledge and relatively lower engagement in Fluid Reasoning and Long-Term Storage and Retrieval, a domain theoretically implicated in poetic interpretation. Because the profiling instrument was purpose-built and was not designed to support between-domain psychometric comparison, this pattern is reported as a relative within-sample profile rather than as evidence of differential cognitive strength. A further metacognitive misalignment was found, suggesting a possible “brevity-as-ease heuristic”, wherein learners conflated the poetry shorter length relative to its prose with reduced cognitive demand. These patterns are consistent with a possible role for differential rehearsal of cognitive processes within a prose-dominant, examination-oriented curriculum rather than from inherent textual opacity. The study advances a provisional institutional–cognitive alignment framework to guide future large-scale investigation across examination-driven ESL/EFL contexts.
