Background. Emotional adversities and social context may influence romantic relationships and psychological well-being, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. However, the present study does not directly measure stigmatization. Aim. The study aimed to evaluate the interplay between attachment styles, relationship satisfaction, and psychological well-being, while considering the distinctions between LGBTQ+ individuals and their heterosexual counterparts. Methods. A quantitative correlational methodology was employed for the study, utilizing a stratified sample of 100 participants: 40 LGBTQ+ individuals and 60 heterosexuals. Standardized instruments were utilized to assess attachment styles, relationship satisfaction, and psychological well-being (ECR-S, RSI, PWB). Statistical processing included MANOVA, correlation and regression analysis. Results. The findings revealed significant disparities in the distribution of attachment styles between groups. The LGBTQ+ group showed higher rates of anxious attachment (35% vs. 23%; p=0.046) compared to the heterosexual group. Secure attachment was positively correlated with both relationship satisfaction (r=0.72) and well-being (r=0.65), whereas avoidant and anxious-avoidant styles exerted a detrimental effect on these indicators. Discussion. The obtained results underscore the critical importance of secure attachment in fostering emotional stability and harmony within relationships. This is kept but moved slightly later and presented as a cautious interpretation, not a finding. Conclusion. The study emphasizes the significance of cultivating a secure attachment style by ensuring emotional safety and adaptive strategies in relationships. The findings contribute to the enhancement of psychological support programs aimed at enhancing relationship quality and well-being across diverse social groups.
Fundamental frequency (F0) is a salient acoustic cue in voice perception, but how F0-related attractiveness judgments vary across listeners with different sexual orientations remains insufficiently understood. This study examined attractiveness ratings under controlled F0 manipulation in Mandarin voice stimuli produced by one male and one female announcer. Eighty adults were recruited: 20 heterosexual male, 20 heterosexual female, 20 homosexual male, and 20 homosexual female participants. An adaptive three-alternative forced-choice pretest with 12 listeners established a group-level F0 just-noticeable difference (JND) of 0.215 ERB. Seven F0 levels, from −3 to +3 JNDs around each speaker’s own baseline, were then presented three times in the main experiment. Because each listener group rated only the target-voice sex that matched its presumed attraction pattern, the study compares two observed listener–target configurations rather than fully crossing listener sex, sexual orientation, and target-voice sex. Linear mixed-effects models showed that attractiveness ratings for the male voice decreased as F0 increased in both heterosexual female and homosexual male listeners, with no reliable difference in slopes. For the female voice, ratings increased with F0 in both heterosexual male and homosexual female listeners, while the homosexual-female group additionally showed a significant nonlinear component, with a fitted maximum near +2.4 JND. These findings indicate that, within these two listener–target configurations and these two controlled source voices, F0-related attractiveness judgments generally followed target-sex-related directions, whereas between-group variation was more evident in response strength and curve shape. The study contributes to experimental research on social voice perception and provides a controlled Mandarin-language baseline for future cross-linguistic comparisons of vocal social evaluation; it does not itself test intercultural variation.
LGBTQ+ adolescents face more substance use risk than straight peers; however, within-group differences remain understudied. This study analyzed 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data to compare alcohol and cannabis use between bisexual adolescents and their peers. Bisexual adolescents were 1.31x as likely to use alcohol as peers identifying “some other way” (95% CI [1.01, 1.52]). Cannabis use was 1.57x as likely among bisexual adolescents as straight adolescents (95% CI [1.48, 1.64]), 1.30x as likely as lesbian/gay adolescents (95% CI [1.02, 1.50]), and 1.64x as likely as peers unsure of their sexual identity (95% CI [1.46, 1.76]). Use of both substances was 1.54x as likely among bisexual adolescents as straight peers (95% CI [1.47, 1.61]) and 1.28x as likely as peers unsure of their sexual identity (95% CI [1.04, 1.45]). Findings support elevated cannabis use risk among bisexual adolescents. Bisexual-specific stressor awareness may enhance adolescent cannabis use prevention and reduction efforts.
Background Suicide is a leading cause of death among young adults, yet few studies have examined longitudinal trajectories of suicidal ideation and attempts across the academic year in UK university students. Aims The study aimed to identify demographic and psychosocial factors associated with lifetime suicide risk, examine factors associated with changes in risk trajectories, and evaluate the relationship between suicidal ideation and attempts over an academic year. Method Participants comprised 3295 students from 5 UK universities who completed longitudinal surveys in autumn and spring terms 2021–2024 in the Nurture-U study. Suicidal ideation and attempts were assessed with Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale items. Demographic, psychosocial and mental health measures were examined as potential risk and protective factors. Regression models with multiple imputation were used, with case–control analyses for smaller subgroups. Results Approximately 45.5% of students reported baseline lifetime suicidal ideation and 9.5% reported a past attempt. Factors associated with lifetime suicidal ideation included minoritised sexual orientation or ethnic background, male or gender-diverse identity, previous mental health treatment and adverse childhood experiences. Among students with lifetime ideation at baseline, 61.1% did not report ideation in the spring term, whereas new-onset ideation occurred in 3.5% of participants. Among students with prior ideation only, 1.3% made a suicide attempt during the academic year, whereas 10.5% with prior attempt history made a suicide attempt. Increases in depressive symptoms and rumination were associated with new attempts at follow-up. Conclusions Most students experiencing suicidal ideation during university have risk factors before university entry. Suicidal ideation alone showed limited specificity for identifying those most at risk of future attempts, highlighting the importance of targeted support for high-risk groups and ongoing monitoring of symptoms throughout the academic year.
This study assessed whether associations between suicidality, victimization, and hopelessness varied across heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, and unsure-orientation youth. Data comprised 20,367 complete cases drawn from the 2015-2023 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. Overlap propensity score weights balanced more than 40 suicidality-related covariates (e.g., gender, age, race/ethnicity, health behaviors, substance use, and risk-seeking behaviors) across groups. Weighted logistic regressions estimated group differences and tested sexual orientation by stressor interactions. After weighting, bisexual, homosexual, and unsure-orientation youth exhibited significantly higher odds of suicidal ideation and planning compared to heterosexual peers (ORs = 2.06-4.19), though adjusted differences in suicide attempts were varied (ORs = 0.89-1.46). While victimization and hopelessness were robustly associated with ideation and planning across all groups (ORs = 1.73-3.32), their associations with suicide attempts were inconsistent (ORs = 0.32-1.45). Interaction analyses between sexual orientation and these stressors showed inconsistent results (ORs = 0.54-1.69), suggesting that, the impact of victimization and hopelessness may not vary uniformly by orientation. Supplementary analyses of 2023 data indicated that among transgender youth, victimization had a weaker association with suicide outcomes (ORs = 0.56-0.99), whereas hopelessness was more strongly correlated with ideation and planning (ORs = 1.46-5.73). These transgender-specific estimates should be interpreted with caution due to small subgroup size and limited covariate overlap. Together, these findings highlight heterogeneity in suicidality across sexual-orientation groups and emphasize the need for longitudinal research with richer contextual and biological measures to clarify mechanisms and subgroup-specific risk and protective factors.
This study examined how impulsivity moderates the relationship between sexual abuse and substance use frequency in a large international sample. Participants (N = 64,472) completed the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST-11), the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale, and sexual abuse measures through the International Sex Survey. Structural equation models tested associations between childhood sexual abuse (CSA), adolescent/adult sexual abuse (AASA), and combined exposure with substance use frequency, and explored moderation by impulsivity across gender identity, sexual orientation, and country. AASA and CSA+AASA were consistently associated with higher substance use frequency, while CSA alone showed weaker or inconsistent associations across groups. Urgency and premeditation facets of impulsivity moderated these associations, particularly among sexual and gender minority individuals. Country-level differences indicated cultural and contextual variation in how impulsivity interacts with trauma to influence substance use. Findings underscore the need for targeted, culturally responsive interventions addressing impulsivity in the aftermath of sexual trauma.
INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience substantial health inequalities, and clinical competence among healthcare providers is a key determinant of equitable care. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Development of Clinical Skills Scale (LGBT-DOCSS) is a validated instrument for assessing SGM-related clinical competence, but no Italian version has been available. This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the Italian LGBT-DOCSS among mental health professionals. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was administered to clinicians and trainees across Italy between June and December 2024. Psychometric analyses were conducted on 345 participants with complete data on all 18 items. Internal consistency, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), Scalar multi-group CFA provided preliminary evidence consistent with measurement invariance across sexual orientation subgroups, and Spearman correlations with external measures of authoritarianism were examined. RESULTS: The original three-factor structure (Clinical Preparedness, Attitudinal Awareness, Basic Knowledge) was replicated with good model fit (CFI = 0.967, TLI = 0.962, RMSEA = 0.058). Internal consistency was strong across all subscales (Cronbach's α ranging from .81 to .89; ordinal α ranging from .87 to .95). Scalar multi-group CFA supported measurement invariance across heterosexual and non-heterosexual subgroups (CFI = 0.944, RMSEA = 0.074), with non-heterosexual professionals demonstrating greater attitudinal affirmation and stronger awareness of SGM health disparities. Authoritarianism showed small-to-moderate associations with Basic Knowledge and Attitudinal Awareness. Significant differences by gender, sexual attraction and profession were observed, with nurses showing lower self-perceived SGM-related competence than other professional groups. DISCUSSION: The Italian LGBT-DOCSS demonstrates strong psychometric properties and is a valid tool for assessing SGM-related clinical competence among Italian mental health professionals. It can support the identification of training needs and the development of targeted educational interventions to improve care for SGM individuals.
Experiences of minority stress likely contribute to elevated levels of depression and suicidal ideation among LGBT individuals. We examined whether the self-reported frequency of exposure to hate speech targeting gay men and lesbians was associated with these outcomes and whether family acceptance of one’s sexual orientation attenuated these associations. We used data from a national survey of the Polish LGBTQiA community ( N = 3827 gay men and lesbians). Participants reported the severity of eight symptoms of depression, as well as the frequency of suicidal ideation. They also indicated how often they had encountered homophobic hate speech, and which categories of close family members accepted their sexual orientation. A higher self-reported frequency of exposure to homophobic hate speech was associated with greater severity of depressive symptoms and more frequent suicidal ideation. These associations were moderated by family acceptance, such that they were weaker among participants with higher family acceptance scores. Our findings provide evidence that family acceptance may buffer negative mental health outcomes of hate speech exposure among gay men and lesbians.
