Buffering stress in cognitive aging: the moderating role of positive emotions on trait-level stress reactivity and negative emotions in middle-aged and older adults

Rose Sin Yi Lin; Maria M Quiñones-Cordero; Kathi L. Heffner Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1916607 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2026.1916607

Introduction This study examined the moderating role of positive emotion in the relationship between trait-like stress reactivity and negative emotion, and whether this moderating effect varies by cognitive performance and cognitive decline across nine years. Methods Using data from 2,041 participants in the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study (mean age = 65.52 years), hierarchical regression models were conducted to predict negative emotion from trait-like stress reactivity, positive emotion, and their interaction, controlling for age, gender, years of education, depressed mood, and neuroticism. Simple slope analyses were conducted to test the direction of significant interactions. Analyses were repeated within subgroups of cognitive performance and cognitive decline across 9 years. Results The interaction between positive emotion and trait-like stress reactivity was significant, with higher positive emotion associated with a weaker relationship between stress reactivity and negative emotion. This moderating effect was observed across low, moderate, and high cognitive performance groups; a three-way interaction further indicated that the moderating effect becomes stronger as cognitive performance increases. For cognitive decline, the moderating effect was significant only among individuals with relatively greater cognitive decline, although the three-way interaction was not significant. Conclusion Positive emotion may buffer the relationship between trait-level stress reactivity and negative emotion across the cognitive performance range, although this moderating effect appears weaker at lower cognitive performance. Findings for cognitive decline were less conclusive, as a subgroup-specific association among participants with greater decline was not confirmed when cognitive decline was analyzed as a continuous moderator.

Low-intensity mind–body exercise for mental health in ageing societies: Tai Chi as a scalable intervention across depression, anxiety, insomnia, loneliness, and cognitive decline

Xiaoqi Zhang; Yaya Shi Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1917045

Population ageing is increasing the number of older adults who experience overlapping depressive symptoms, anxiety, insomnia, loneliness, and cognitive vulnerability, often alongside multimorbidity, pain, frailty, and functional limitation. This structured narrative review evaluates Tai Chi as a scalable, low-intensity mind–body exercise for these interconnected problems. We synthesised 171 publications identified through PubMed and citation chaining, including Tai Chi-specific clinical studies, broader mind–body evidence, guidelines, and implementation literature. Evidence is most consistent for reducing depressive symptoms, improving sleep, and improving balance, with possible benefits for selected cognitive outcomes. Evidence is weaker for diagnosed depressive or anxiety disorders, loneliness as a primary outcome, long-term cognitive trajectories, and dementia incidence. Tai Chi should therefore be positioned as an adjunct to established care, not as a replacement for pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), or multidomain dementia-risk reduction. Proposed pathways include autonomic regulation, sleep stabilisation, behavioral activation, balance confidence, cognitive–motor integration, and group participation; however, most mechanism evidence is indirect or exploratory. Translation requires clearly specified protocols, active comparators, blinded outcome assessments where feasible, long-term follow-up, systematic adverse-event reporting, cost-effectiveness analyses, and equity-focused implementation. Tai Chi is the most credible as an adaptable component of stepped or integrated care for older adults, provided that programmes are standardised, safely delivered, and evaluated against clinically significant outcomes.

The Emotional Landscape of Money Management and Cognitive Decline: A Therapeutic Jurisprudence Perspective

Nicola Thomas International Journal of Mental Health and Capacity Law, 2026, Issue 31, pp. 4-27 https://doi.org/10.19164/ijmhcl.31.1684

The ability to manage one's finances is fundamental to independent living, personal autonomy, and overall well-being, particularly for older adults. However, cognitive decline poses a significant threat to this capacity, with profound emotional and psychosocial ramifications for older adults, their families, and the professionals who support them. While legal frameworks like the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) in England and Wales aim to address these challenges, this article argues that a therapeutic jurisprudence (TJ) perspective offers a crucial lens for understanding and improving outcomes. Drawing upon existing literature in gerontology, neuropsychology, law, and therapeutic jurisprudence, this article considers the complex interplay between cognitive decline, the legal concept of mental capacity in financial decision-making, and emotional well-being. It critiques the potential limitations of purely cognitive or legalistic approaches and advocates for the integration of TJ principles – focusing on psychological well-being, recognising the proactive role of legal actors, and adopting a systemic perspective – to create more humane, effective, and empowering support systems for older adults facing financial vulnerability due to cognitive decline.
