Digital technologies can expand opportunities for language practice, feedback, and access to learning materials, but their educational value depends on how they are integrated into instruction. This conceptual article draws on a selective narrative review to examine automatic speech recognition, conversational agents, machine translation, and virtual environments in language learning. It distinguishes the functions of these technologies from the learning outcomes that teachers must evaluate. The discussion identifies opportunities for pronunciation practice, sustained interaction, reflective revision, and contextualized communication, alongside problems involving unreliable feedback, cognitive demands, unequal access, and personal data. Alpha School is considered briefly as an institutional illustration of adaptive learning and human guidance, rather than as evidence of foreign-language learning effectiveness. Four proposed classroom applications show how teachers can connect digital activity to observable language performance. The article argues that responsible integration requires clear learning objectives, appropriate scaffolding, human review of feedback, and opportunities to demonstrate learning beyond the original tool. Its contribution is a practical framework for evaluating instructional use; the proposed applications require subsequent classroom investigation.
Geometry problem-solving requires learners to coordinate conceptual knowledge, spatial representation, strategy use and the regulation of cognition, motivation and effort. This systematic review examined how self-regulated learning (SRL) operates in geometry problem-solving and which learner, task, social, instructional and developmental conditions shape it. A Scopus search reported according to PRISMA 2020 identified 1,298 records; database limits left 529, and eligibility screening retained 32 empirical studies published from 2021 to 2026. Twelve studies involved undergraduates or pre-service teachers, seven involved school pupils, one involved kindergarten children and 12 did not state the educational level in the extracted records. Study quality was appraised with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, and thematic synthesis identified four themes: planning and strategic regulation; monitoring, control and strategy adaptation; learner characteristics and outcomes; and instructional scaffolding and technology. Successful performance was associated with problem representation, strategy selection, monitoring, error detection, adaptation and evaluation. Diagnostic and elaborated feedback, content-focused peer feedback and supportive scaffolding were more informative than the presence of technology. Evidence on learner characteristics was mainly correlational, and evidence on young learners was thin. The review proposes a Process-Oriented Framework of Self-Regulated Geometry Problem-Solving that links input conditions, forethought, performance regulation, reflection, and outcomes and it is best supported for adolescent and adult learners. Future research should combine self-report with behavioural, longitudinal and process-tracing evidence and develop age-appropriate SRL measures for young children.
This study investigates how a novice EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher enacts professional identity within the context of reading instruction. While prior research has established the dynamic and multifaceted nature of teacher identity, limited attention has been given to how professional identity is constructed and enacted through subject-specific pedagogical practices, particularly in reading instruction. This qualitative case study draws on interview and classroom observation data to explore how a novice EFL teacher enacts professional identities in reading instruction. The findings suggest that the teacher’s professional identity is not a fixed set of roles but is expressed through situated teaching practices and professional reflections. Specifically, three interrelated identity positions were identified—facilitator of meaning-making, cultural and textual guide, and reflective learner. These positions were reflected in instructional practices such as scaffolding, interpretive questioning, and the provision of cultural and textual background knowledge, as well as in the teacher’s willingness to learn from students and engage in professional development. Furthermore, the findings highlight the relationship between the teacher’s professional identity, individual agency, and the working conditions of her teaching context. By situating teacher identity within the practices of reading instruction, this study extends existing research by foregrounding the practice-based and context-sensitive nature of novice teacher identity. An Activity Theory perspective further informs the interpretation of how professional identity relates to pedagogical practices, instructional tools, and contextual conditions.
Background Students new to flipped classrooms frequently encounter challenges with motivation and comprehension when engaging with pre-class materials independently, particularly outside scheduled class hours. Aims This study examined a scaffolded flipped-learning approach that helped students move step by step from a Faux Flipped Classroom (FFC) to a Regular Flipped Classroom (RFC), and then to a Gamified Flipped Classroom (GFC) over one semester. The goal was to support students in adapting to flipped learning, managing their mental workload, and improving their learning performance. Method Mixed methods were employed in the data collection. For quantitative data, learning achievement was assessed with tests and self-rating scales measured cognitive load, while qualitative interviews provided more detailed feedback. Results The results revealed that students in the experimental group who learned through the scaffolding strategy performed better than their counterparts in the control group. Meanwhile, both groups demonstrated a small drop in intrinsic cognitive load, likely because they became more familiar with the tasks rather than because the material got easier. However, the scaffolded group showed a larger drop in unnecessary cognitive load and a larger increase in germane cognitive effort, suggesting the intervention helped students focus more on learning and less on confusion or figuring out what to do. Intrinsic and germane cognitive load should be interpreted cautiously because they are closely related. Conclusion This study contributes to Cognitive Load Theory and scaffolding research by showing that flipped classroom success depends not only on design but also on how students are gradually prepared to use it.
Economics learning at the junior high school level plays a strategic role in building students' economic literacy, yet national and international assessment data indicate a declining trend in the literacy and engagement of Indonesian students. This study aims to describe the actual conditions of economics learning in junior high schools in Jakarta, covering teachers' instructional backgrounds, the characteristics of circulating teaching modules, and student engagement patterns, as an empirical foundation for model development. A descriptive qualitative design was applied. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with social studies teachers and students, classroom observation, and document analysis of circulating economics teaching modules, then analysed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana with source and technique triangulation. The findings show that most social studies teachers do not hold an economics education background, that most modules neither scaffold mastery experience gradually nor address the physiological-emotional dimension of learning, and that behavioural, emotional, cognitive, and agentic engagement indicators appear only sporadically. These conditions provide the rational basis for six characteristics of the Student Engagement Project-Based Learning model, namely contextual economic problems, project activity, collaboration, student autonomy, graduated scaffolding, and structured reflection.
Critical appraisal of research literature is an important skill for graduates yet science graduate employers report dissatisfaction with skill levels. As scaffolding can assist in critical appraisal development, we aimed to develop and evaluate 2 adaptive e-tutorials for critical appraisal development of neuropharmacology research articles as part of the scaffolding process. We developed adaptive e-tutorials allowing personalised feedback and remediation. Results of an end-of-tutorial survey, and comparisons of institutional Unit of Study Survey ratings and exam results in the 2 years before, and during, the intervention were analysed. Over 4 years, 150 students participated. In the cohorts that did not complete the e-tutorial, there were significant differences in exam marks between students of different academic backgrounds (non-science < science < medicine backgrounds; p < 0.05), while no significant differences between groups were seen in students that completed the e-tutorial, and these marks were statistically equivalent. Students ranked their perceived benefit from the videos, increase in critical appraisal ability, and value of the e-tutorial with average rankings between 4.4–4.6 on a Likert scale (5 = strongly agree). Similarly, students who completed the e-tutorial showed a significant increase in rating of their critical thinking skills in the Unit of Study Survey (p < 0.05). Completion of the e-tutorial was associated with increased equitable development of critical appraisal. Students from non-science backgrounds showed the biggest increase in actual appraisal performance, suggesting that while the e-tutorial was associated with increased confidence for all students, the other features of the course may have developed appraisal levels to a stage sufficient for successful exam completion.
This classroom action research aimed to improve the analytical skills of fifth-grade students in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) through the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. Current IPAS learning is oriented toward applicable problem-solving approaches. The low analytical skills at SDN Bangetayu Kulon were reflected in the pre-cycle classical completeness of only 28.57%, with a mean score of 64.29. The study employed the Kemmis and McTaggart spiral design across two cycles consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting, involving 28 students, including 14 male and 14 female students. The instruments consisted of a Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) written test at the C4 analytical level, teacher and student activity observation sheets, and documentation. The findings indicated a gradual improvement: the class mean score increased from 64.29 in the pre-cycle to 74.64 in Cycle I and 90.36 in Cycle II. Classical completeness increased from 28.57% to 60.71% and 89.28%, exceeding the 85% success indicator. Student activity also increased from 53.21% in Cycle I to 91.79% in Cycle II. The implementation of PBL supported by contextual problems, scaffolding, guiding questions, and structured group roles effectively improved student engagement and analytical skills.
This conceptual article explores practical ways in which college and university instructors can leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to support assessment as learning and develop students’ feedback literacy. Traditional assessment practices often focus on assessment for learning (informing instruction) or of learning (measuring outcomes), while assessment as learning—when students actively monitor and reflect on their own learning—receives less attention. AI can help instructors leverage assessment as a learning tool by generating work samples for student analysis and providing timely, actionable feedback that students can use to revise their work. When combined with instructor modeling, peer dialogue, and scaffolds such as guiding questions or graphic organizers, AI-supported feedback promotes metacognition, self-directed learning, and critical evaluation skills. The article provides practical guidance, including prompts and strategies for using AI to enhance student engagement with feedback, helping instructors create more efficient, effective, and student-centered practices that utilize assessments as learning tools.
Nature exploration fosters children’s cognitive development and environmental awareness; however, kindergarten curricula are often constrained by limited resources and repetitive interaction, leaving children’s observations only weakly integrated into structured understanding and expression. We present Botune, an AI-supported creative-expression tool for kindergarten planting activities that integrates plant observation, drawing, spoken narration, and animation-based sharing. We conducted an exploratory, fixed-order within-participant study in kindergarten planting classes with 27 children and three educators; 24 complete cases were analysed after excluding data from three children who did not complete the drawing task. The traditional activity preceded the Botune-supported activity by seven days. The proportion of activity time spent observing and teacher-rated involvement scores during sharing were higher in the later session. The later narrations contained significantly more actions and character interactions; character counts were descriptively higher but did not remain statistically significant after Holm correction, and state- or emotion-related expressions did not differ significantly. These semantic counts index narrative elaboration rather than overall narrative quality or general narrative ability. These differences cannot be attributed to Botune alone. Scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding were not directly assessed by these measures. The study offers exploratory observations and design considerations for AI-supported narrative expression in kindergarten nature learning.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated into higher education, yet empirical evidence on its pedagogical use in university physics remains fragmented. This systematic review synthesized empirical research on the applications, reported learning and pedagogical outcomes, methodological quality, challenges, and educational implications of AI-supported university physics education. We used six search sources: SpringerLink, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and ERIC. The searches in the five original sources were updated through September 2026, and ERIC was added as an additional search source. Eligibility criteria were defined using the PICOS framework, study selection followed PRISMA 2020, and methodological quality was appraised using the 2018 Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Eleven empirical studies met the inclusion criteria and were synthesized narratively. Across the included studies, AI was used for tutoring and explanations, formative feedback and scaffolding, collaborative problem solving, simulation and modeling, instructional design, and developing AI literacy. Reported outcomes were mixed and context-dependent. Some studies identified favorable short-term or task-specific outcomes related to feedback, learning performance, simulation-based activities, and AI-related competencies, whereas others reported limitations in transfer to independent performance, the pedagogical quality of AI-generated materials, and students’ ability to recognize scientifically inaccurate AI-generated responses. Cross-study patterns suggested that instructional structure, alignment between AI-supported activities and learning tasks, students’ disciplinary knowledge, and opportunities to critically evaluate AI outputs shaped the educational use of AI. The current evidence does not support a general conclusion that AI is uniformly effective in university physics education. Rather, its educational value appears to depend on how AI is integrated into learning activities and on the extent to which students and instructors retain responsibility for reasoning, evaluation, and pedagogical decision-making. Given the small and heterogeneous evidence base, larger longitudinal and multi-institutional studies are needed to examine the durability and transferability of reported outcomes.
شش منبع جستجو مورد استفاده قرار گرفت: SpringerLink، Scopus، Web of Science، ScienceDirect، Google Scholar و ERIC.
This Brief Report examines changes in students’ understanding of economics and “the economy” through the lens of “threshold concepts,” which serve as gateways to new ways of thinking. Drawing on qualitative analysis of postgraduate students’ reflective assignments from an MSc Ecological Economics module, we explore how a set of pedagogically pre-identified threshold concepts – selected for their centrality within ecological economics and contrast with mainstream economics – can reshape students’ understanding, and how scaffolding supports this process. The report assesses engagement with the following threshold concepts: the embedded economy (ontology); the Systems of Provision framework and heterodox views on capitalism and growth (epistemology); value pluralism and the limits of monetization (axiology); and the idea of economics as normative and political (ideology). We show that scaffolding across key dimensions of a pre-analytical vision – ontology, epistemology, axiology, and ideology – helped students develop a different understanding of economics. While focused on ecological economics, the findings suggest a pedagogical approach transferable to sustainability education more broadly: scaffolding learning around a pre-analytic vision and anchoring threshold concepts within it to foster deeper, more critical engagement with complex social-ecological knowledge.
Students increasingly rely on online video for help with class material. Here we ask if this form of self-directed learning can be leveraged to improve learning outcomes of regular classroom instruction. Specifically, we test whether encouraging students to find relevant instructional videos online, paired with scaffolding through association questions, benefits learning in an introductory college physics course. A total of 103 undergraduate students were assigned to either a control group (conventional reading assignments and exercises) or an intervention group (unassisted free video search and viewing along with association questions). We also assessed working memory capacity, motivation, and collected their grade-point averages (GPA) to determine the effect of these individual traits. Learning performance was assessed via quizzes, exams, and pre/post physics knowledge tests. In all three measures, we found evidence for a beneficial effect of this intervention. However, on the exam the evidence was only indirect, namely, performance depended on the level of engagement with the association questions. Working memory, GPA, and motivation were significant predictors on most outcomes measures. These findings suggest that student engagement and cognitive traits play a critical role in the effectiveness of video-based, autonomous learning interventions. These results indicate that integrating scaffolding questions into regular at home self directed video search enhances learning, as students are prompted to actively engage with the material.
This study examined whether metacognitive strategy training strengthens the contribution of an AI-based Socratic reflection system to pre-service teachers’ reflective practice. Study 1 used a 2 (metacognitive training: present vs. absent) × 2 (tool condition: AI-based Socratic scaffolding vs. traditional digital tools) randomized between-subjects design ( N = 60; n = 15 per cell). Written reflection quality at post-test was analyzed by ANCOVA with pre-test performance as the covariate. The metacognitive-training main effect was significant, F (1, 55) = 33.89, p < 0.001, η 2 p = 0.381, as was the tool-condition main effect, F (1, 55) = 9.63, p = 0.003, η 2 p = 0.149. More importantly, the metacognition × tool interaction was significant, F (1, 55) = 10.91, p = 0.002, η 2 p = 0.165. Under metacognitive training, AI-based Socratic scaffolding produced a significant model-estimated advantage over traditional digital tools (Δ M = 0.56, p < 0.001), whereas the tool difference was not significant without metacognitive training (Δ M = −0.03, p = 0.821). Study 2 examined dialogue logs from the two AI conditions. Participants who received metacognitive training generated a substantially larger proportion of higher-order prompts than participants who received placebo training (44.1% vs. 12.2%), t(28) = 7.14, p < 0.001, d = 2.61. These process data are consistent with the proposed account that metacognitive preparation changes how learners engage with AI, although they do not constitute a formal mediation test. The findings suggest that, within this configured Socratic AI environment, metacognitive preparation is an important condition for realizing higher-quality reflective practice.
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly embedded in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction, with self-regulated learning (SRL) and learner autonomy positioned as key outcomes of interest. A growing evidence base reports positive effects of GenAI on self-regulatory strategies, alongside a parallel and largely separate literature warning that GenAI use may foster dependency, cognitive offloading and the externalization of self-monitoring. This scoping review maps this apparent paradox, in which GenAI appears simultaneously as scaffolding and as substitution, across the SRL and learner-autonomy literature, with particular attention to its implications for EFL learners. Following a PRISMA-ScR-informed approach, 12 empirical and review studies published between 2025 and 2026 were thematically synthesized alongside four foundational theoretical works. As a result, four thematic clusters emerged: (1) evidence of GenAI functioning as scaffolding for SRL; (2) evidence of GenAI functioning as substitution, fostering dependency and cognitive offloading; (3) design and timing features that moderate which role GenAI plays; and (4) existing reviews and meta-analyses, together with their methodological limitations. Across clusters, a consistent pattern emerges, in that nearly all studies rely on short-term or cross-sectional designs, and several recent reviews explicitly call for research measuring learners’ delayed, unsupported performance so as to distinguish durable internalization from temporary dependency. No identified study has applied a longitudinal design incorporating a structured AI-withdrawal phase to directly test this distinction among EFL learners. This review argues for such a design and outlines its theoretical and methodological implications for Vietnamese EFL contexts.
This qualitative case study explored how field dependence-independence shaped students’ access to Action-Process-Object-Schema (APOS)-based scaffolding and how stage-specific support contributed to the qualitative development of advanced mathematical thinking (AMT) on function limits. In this study, developing denotes the observable emergence or reorganization of mathematical constructions during scaffolded activity, not a statistically measured learning gain. The bounded classroom case involved 24 mathematics education students at an Islamic university in Sumatra, Indonesia. The Group Embedded Figures Test classified 6 students as field-independent (FI) and 18 as field-dependent (FD); four information-rich cases, comprising 2 FI and 2 FD students, were selected for cross-case analysis. APOS-based scaffolding was implemented in four 135-minute Calculus I sessions and examined further through stimulated-recall interviews. Initial written solutions provided the primary evidence, post-prompt explanations and revisions documented students’ responses to Action-, Process-, Object-, and Schema-oriented support, and classroom observation records verified the enactment and gradual fading of the planned scaffolds. FI-1 constructed a complete Schema and required only fading prompts. FI-2 moved from correct but disconnected Objects toward an integrated Schema after a Schema-oriented prompt. FD-1 corrected an invalid limit value after Process-oriented prompts stabilized the transformation sequence. FD-2 moved from direct substitution and 0/0 toward guided algebraic Actions and an emerging Process after explicit Action-oriented cues. The findings indicate that cognitive style influenced task entry and the amount of external structure used, whereas APOS identified the construction that support needed to target. The observed shifts support a diagnostic account of AMT development while avoiding causal or long-term claims.
This study explores how pre-service teachers navigate the developmental continuum of reflective practice to construct their professional identities during microteaching. Drawing on reflection papers and peer/instructor feedback from 44 EFL pre-service teachers, as well as instructor feedback, the study employed qualitative analysis to trace the chronological trajectory from retrospective critique (reflection-on-action) to proactive pedagogical planning (reflection-for-action). The findings reveal a profound shift that moves beyond mere technical troubleshooting. First, participants transformed initial pedagogical friction and performative anxiety into vital opportunities for emotional regulation. Second, they evolved from executing rigid lesson plans to architecting responsive instructional dynamics. Finally, they rejected teacher-centered transmission, embracing a relational pedagogy designed to foster learner agency. Crucially, this evolution was catalyzed by dialogic scaffolding; peer and instructor feedback functioned not as summative evaluation, but as socially mediated intervention that bridged the gap between diagnosing limitations and envisioning their professional identity as an effective teacher. Ultimately, this study reconceptualizes reflection not as a solitary, post-lesson administrative task, but as a profound ontological bridge. The findings suggest that teacher education programs must embed socially mediated, forward-oriented reflective cycles to empower novices to evolve from anxious performers into adaptive, self-directed professionals capable of true reflective agency.
Examining sequences and series often leads students to rely on formulas, especially when assignments require algebraic modeling and generalization. This condition may hinder the advancement of critical thinking, especially in evaluation, inference, and reasoning. This study examined the extent to which a problem-solving e-module with algebraic challenges enhanced students' critical thinking and identified the elements that best facilitated critical thinking during the learning process. The study used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. The quantitative phase encompassed 89 senior high school students from three classes. Students completed a pretest, engaged with an e-module featuring guiding questions, scaffolding, feedback, and reflection, and then completed a posttest. The quantitative data were examined utilizing descriptive statistics, normalized gain, pretest-posttest comparisons, and effect size analysis. Data were gathered from students' e-module assignments, classroom observations, written reflections, and task-oriented interviews. The data were examined using theme coding and synthesized with the quantitative results. The results indicated an improvement in overall critical thinking and across all metrics; however, the improvements were inconsistent. Evaluation and interpretation improved more significantly than explanation. Feedback, directed inquiries, scaffolding, and reflection facilitated critical thinking; however, argument quality and algebraic reasoning varied among students.
Critical thinking is widely recognized as a foundational skill for effective participation in the workforce and responsible citizenship. It involves analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting information to draw well-reasoned, defensible conclusions. The introduction of the Competency-Based Curriculum in Kenya, under the Competency-Based Education holistic approach, has included critical thinking as one of its core competencies. The study sought to determine how teachers are scaffolding critical thinking during the preparation and presentation of Integrated Science instruction in public junior schools in Nairobi County, Kenya. The study adopted a mixed-methods descriptive research design. The target population was 8,259 respondents: 7,598 learners, 643 teachers, and 18 Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs). The sample consisted of 382 respondents: 46 teachers, 328 learners, and 8 CSOs. Representative samples were selected through proportionate and systematic sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, Version 30.0), while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings indicated that although teachers adopted learner-centered approaches, they faced significant challenges in planning and implementing critical-thinking strategies, mainly conceptual links, inquiry, evidence-based reasoning, reflection, and real-world application of scientific concepts. The study also identified curriculum interpretation as a barrier to implementing critical-thinking instruction, resulting in a gap between teachers' perceived skills and actual classroom practices. The findings inform educators on the status of implementing critical thinking under Competency-Based Education and highlight challenges experienced by teachers. The study concludes that teachers encounter difficulties in developing Integrated Science instruction that scaffolds critical thinking and recommends the development of a structured instructional design model to help them design such instruction.
Academic writing development in open and distance learning (ODL) environments remains challenging because students must independently regulate complex writing processes while receiving limited opportunities for continuous interaction and feedback. Existing digital learning platforms often emphasize assignment submission rather than supporting writing development as an iterative process involving planning, feedback utilization, reflection, and revision. This study aimed to develop and evaluate SIM-Aril as an online portfolio-based self-regulated feedback platform for supporting academic writing development in an ODL context. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) design involving needs analysis, platform development, validation, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected from 122 students and 38 tutors through self-regulated writing questionnaires, tutor competency questionnaires, expert evaluation, and qualitative responses. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and exploratory factor analysis, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings demonstrate that SIM-Aril supported academic writing development through the integration of digital portfolio assessment, tutor scaffolding, and student self-regulated writing processes. Students demonstrated strong engagement in revision, feedback utilization, metacognitive monitoring, and other writing regulation activities. Tutor evaluation indicated that academic writing supervision represented an important component supporting SIM-Aril implementation. The integrated findings show that SIM-Aril functions not merely as a digital submission platform but as a self-regulated feedback ecosystem that connects learner autonomy, instructional support, and formative feedback. This study contributes theoretically by extending digital assessment research through a model that integrates individual self-regulation, socially shared regulation, and feedback literacy within technology-supported academic writing environments. Practically, the findings suggest that effective digital assessment in ODL should be designed to support learning processes rather than only evaluate final outcomes.
