This study examines adult romantic attachment among university students, focusing on attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional design was used, involving 50 students aged 18 to 28 years. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using the 12-item Experiences in Close Relationships?Short Form (ECR-S). The results showed moderate attachment anxiety (M = 3.78, SD = 1.03) and low-to-moderate attachment avoidance (M = 3.16, SD = 0.90). A weak positive correlation was observed between the two dimensions (r = .16, p = .264), but the relationship was not statistically significant. Exploratory analysis identified a statistically significant difference in attachment avoidance across years of study, while the observed gender difference in attachment anxiety was not statistically significant. These demographic findings require cautious interpretation because of the small subgroup sizes. Overall, participants reported greater concern about rejection than discomfort with emotional closeness. The findings support examining attachment anxiety and avoidance as distinct dimensions of romantic attachment. However, the small convenience sample, reliance on self-reported responses, and cross-sectional design limit the generalisability of the results. Further research involving larger and more diverse student populations is recommended to examine attachment patterns and their relationship with demographic and interpersonal factors.
This study explored attachment-related responses and self-reported relationship experiences among adults. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey was conducted using an online questionnaire; the supplied response file contained 57 records. The questionnaire included demographic questions, 12 attachment-related statements, six relationship-experience statements, and an optional open-ended question about healthy relationships. Descriptive statistics were calculated. For exploratory analysis, four items concerning fear of rejection and reassurance were averaged into an anxiety-related index, and four items concerning emotional disclosure, closeness, and independence were averaged into an avoidance-related index. These researcher-created indices are not validated psychological scales. Spearman rank correlations were used to examine associations with relationship-experience ratings. The six-item relationship-experience composite had a mean of 3.65 on a 1-5 scale. The anxiety-related index was positively associated with the composite (ρ = .315, p = .017), as was the avoidance-related index (ρ = .430, p = .001), contrary to the initially anticipated negative direction. Since the items were not validated, no reverse-scoring was applied, and the sample was a convenience sample with uneven demographic representation, these findings must be interpreted cautiously. They do not establish causation or justify classifying individuals by attachment style.
Introduction Anticipating an opponent's actions is central to performance in team sports such as soccer, where a player must select the correct response within a fraction of a second. Perceptual-cognitive expertise in anticipation is well documented, but standard measures (response time, accuracy, or option choice) capture only the discrete response produced at a single moment and leave the preparatory processing that precedes it unobserved. Building on evidence that hand and cursor movements reveal cognition as it unfolds, the present study examined, as a proof of concept, whether continuous cursor tracking can read out the pre-response preparatory state in a sports anticipation task. Methods Twelve skilled soccer players and twelve novices watched soccer pass-course clips and anticipated which teammate would receive the ball by moving a cursor; the video was stopped at the final frame (the moment a response was required), and the same clips were repeated across three blocks. Two continuous measures were defined: the cursor's Euclidean distance to the correct receiver at response onset (a spatial index of where the participant was poised) and the increase in cursor velocity in the window immediately before response onset (a temporal index of the movement toward the response). Results Compared with novices, skilled players anticipated more accurately, were poised closer to the correct receiver, and showed a larger velocity increase; control analyses argued against the velocity difference being a by-product of the total amount of movement. In an exploratory analysis, the positional difference emerged across repeated presentations of the same clips and was largest in the final block. In addition, the velocity difference was already present in the first presentation, and no significant change across repeated presentations was detected. Discussion The pre-response preparatory state is observed in both a spatial aspect (where one is poised) and a temporal aspect (how one moves toward the response). Because in basic reaching research the position and the velocity of movement index different aspects of decision-making, capturing both under a single continuous measure (which discrete responses cannot) provides a basis for measuring the decision-making processes that underlie anticipation in sport.
Self-harm represents a serious mental health concern in which emotional experiences play a significant role in both its onset and maintenance. This exploratory study examined which emotions were most frequently reported before and after self-harm, how selected emotions changed following self-harm, and how emotional experiences were associated with specific forms of self-harm and demographic factors (gender, religious identification). The sample comprised of 158 university students, of whom 130 reported a history of self-harming behavior and were included in analyses of emotional experiences. Data were collected using a modified Self-Harm Inventory questionnaire and measures assessing the occurrence of emotions before and after self-harm. Anger, feelings of failure, and sadness were the most frequently reported emotions preceding self-harm, whereas sadness, relief, disappointment, guilt, and shame were the most frequently reported emotions following self-harm. The reported frequency of anger, guilt, and sadness decreased following self-harm, whereas negative emotions remained prominent after the behavior. After Benjamini–Hochberg correction for multiple comparisons, religious identification remained negatively associated with self-harm frequency and with the reported frequency of several emotions. Gender was not significantly associated with the examined variables, although this finding should be interpreted cautiously given the gender imbalance and limited sample size. After correction, selected associations between emotions and specific forms of self-harm remained significant, including associations of anger with hitting oneself, disgust with starving oneself, hatred with self-defeating thoughts, guilt following laxative misuse, and changes in anger with hitting oneself and intentionally worsening medical situations. Overall, the findings indicate selective associations between emotional experiences and self-harming behavior while underscoring the need for longitudinal and event-level research to clarify their temporal and causal dynamics.
Emotional intelligence (EI) has emerged as a relevant professional competency in nursing, yet its relationship with career growth remains underexplored in Saudi Arabia. This study examined the association between total emotional intelligence and perceived career growth among nurses in the Jazan Health Cluster. A cross-sectional correlational design was employed with 295 registered nurses in the Jazan Health Cluster recruited via convenience sampling. EI was measured using the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test, and career growth was measured using the Career Growth Scale. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression served as the primary analytical strategies. The sample was predominantly female (78.0%), Saudi (67.1%), and BSN-qualified (74.9%), with a mean age of 36.28 years (SD = 7.94). Mean total EI was 127.98 (SD = 9.96), and mean total career growth was 53.73 (SD = 6.66). EI was positively correlated with career growth ( r = .351, 95% CI [0.246, 0.447], p < .001). Exploratory analysis showed that total EI was most strongly correlated with Career Capacity ( r = .438). Social Skills and Emotion Utilization showed broad positive patterns across the non-salary career-growth domains, whereas total EI was not associated with Salary Increase ( r = − .008, 95% CI [-0.122, 0.106]). The association between the total scores remained after covariate adjustment (B = 0.213, standardized β = 0.319, HC3 p < .001; adjusted R² = 0.220). Total emotional intelligence was positively associated with perceived career growth among nurses in Saudi Arabia after covariate adjustment but was not associated with perceived salary growth. Exploratory findings suggest that emotional competencies may be more relevant to developmental and relational aspects of career growth than to financial advancement. The findings may inform broader professional-development strategies aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 healthcare workforce priorities.
Social deduction games require people to identify the truth-tellers and liars based on limited and vague information. This exploratory study investigated the relationship between agreeableness, neuroticism and accuracy of deception judgment in a structured social-deduction task. Sixty-three participants aged 15-35 completed a 120-item Big Five personality inventory and then observed the materials from a Werewolf game before making five judgments, three hidden-role judgments and two truth-value judgments. The results showed that neuroticism was negatively correlated with the accuracy of judgment (r = -0.294, p = .019, 95% CI [-0.505, -0.050]), and agreeableness was not significantly related to accuracy (r = -0.128, p = .317, 95% CI [-0.364, 0.124]). Exploratory analysis of trait combinations also showed that the mean accuracy of the agreeableness and neuroticism groups was different. Therefore, it is proposed that neuroticism may be linked to differences in the judgement of deception among individuals, but agreeableness alone was not significantly associated with performance in the current task. As an exploratory correlational study, the results provide an initial indication of personality differences in deception judgment under the circumstances of structured social interaction.
Purpose: Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum obliges lower-primary teachers to document their planning in detail while adopting learner-centered pedagogies, however, whether either obligation translates into what learners do in numeracy lessons remains poorly evidenced. Methodology: This study analyzed 31 structured lesson observations across 26 public and low-cost private lower-primary schools in three Kenyan counties. A three-item index of observed learner numeracy mastery served as the outcome, combining strategic flexibility in producing correct answers, generalization of concepts beyond the textbook, and an assessor-verified check of learners’ exercise books. Forty-one (41) binary practice indicators were screened on this outcome with Benjamini-Hochberg correction and then subjected to multivariable regression, exact categorical analysis, cluster-robust estimation and leave-one-observer-out resampling in exploratory analysis. Four practices were corrected. Findings: Guided instruction was the most measured, with a massive difference between the average mastery of 97.1% observed and 54.2% unobserved (r = .68, d = 2.03, q = .001). The association remained statistically significant after teaching experience, class enrollment and county were controlled (b = 42.31, 95 % CI [24.99, 59.63]) and in all the leave-one-observer-out replications, using observer-clustered standard errors. There was no positive association between mastery and documentary preparation, and this effect was reversed after statistically controlling for enacted pedagogy. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The results cast doubt on the notion that inspection documents of planning reflect quality of teaching. The results are provided as a hypothesis only, due to the small sample and exploratory screening.
Comprehensive self-report personality inventories can impose substantial response burden, motivating the development of more efficient assessment strategies and the exploration of complementary information sources. Guided by Dual-Process Theory, this exploratory study examined a questionnaire-primary residual fusion framework in which a reduced questionnaire response vector served as the main predictive source, while static abstract line drawings were evaluated as a bounded auxiliary source of information. A total of 100 participants completed the 187-item Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) and provided unprompted abstract line drawings. To account for the small sample size and reduce optimistic bias, we used participant-level repeated cross-validation, fold-local questionnaire item selection, standardized image preprocessing, cross-fitted residual learning, and nested selection of the visual correction scale. The reduced questionnaire provided a useful but imperfect held-out approximation of the full-form 16PF reference scores, with factor-level Pearson correlations ranging from 0.34 to 0.78. In contrast, the static drawing modality did not provide stable incremental predictive value. Nested validation selected a zero visual correction in 21 of 25 outer folds, and the fixed scale originally proposed for visual correction (0.05) produced a slightly higher mean absolute error than the questionnaire-only condition (1.2120 vs. 1.2100). An exploratory analysis using teacher-provided observer ratings likewise showed no advantage for visual fusion over questionnaire-only prediction. These findings indicate that Dual-Process Theory can motivate a testable asymmetric framework for integrating explicit and non-verbal information, but the present data do not support static final line drawings as a reliable source of incremental personality information. Future research should examine richer process-level drawing signals, including stroke timing, pauses, pressure, and trajectory dynamics, in larger independent samples.
BACKGROUND: Cognitive emotion regulation may play an important role in psychological resilience; however, its association with resilience may be influenced by various factors, including cognitive ability and psychiatric symptoms. We examined whether specific cognitive emotion-regulation strategies remained associated with resilience after accounting for these factors. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 149 healthy young adults. Psychological resilience and cognitive emotion-regulation strategies were assessed using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). Partial correlation analyses were performed after adjusting for demographic characteristics; full-scale intelligence quotient; and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. In the multiple regression model, all nine CERQ subscales were entered simultaneously with these covariates, and a stepwise model was used for the exploratory analysis. RESULTS: After full adjustment, the five adaptive strategies and rumination were positively associated with resilience and remained significant after Holm correction, whereas self-blame showed only a nominal association that did not survive the correction. Positive reappraisal (r=0.691) and refocus on planning (r=0.655) showed the strongest associations. In the regression model, only positive reappraisal (β=0.348, p<0.001) and refocus on planning (β=0.289, p<0.001) were independently associated with higher resilience (adjusted R²=0.627), and the exploratory stepwise model retained both strategies. CONCLUSION: Positive reappraisal and refocus on planning showed robust associations with psychological resilience after adjusting for demographic, cognitive, and psychological factors. Adaptive reinterpretation of stressful experiences and goal-directed planning may represent particularly relevant cognitive emotion-regulation correlates of psychological resilience.
Digital therapeutics for mental health often face low patient engagement, which limits their clinical impact. Interventions that deliver treatment using a video game medium may improve engagement and therapeutic efficacy, but the potential emergence of gaming-related problems remains a safety question and a concern among clinical stakeholders. We examined whether long-term adjunctive use of the video game therapeutic Meliora was associated with changes in gaming-related problems in a three-arm randomized controlled trial. Participants were adults with interview-confirmed major depressive disorder without significant gaming or gambling problems at baseline. The intention-to-treat cohort ( n = 1001) had a mean age of 33.4 years (SD 9.3), and 64% were female. From baseline to post-intervention (week 12), Game Addiction Scale (GAS-7) scores decreased in the Meliora group (mean change, −0.63 points; 95% CI, −0.91 to −0.34; dz = −0.24; Holm-adjusted p < 0.001), whereas no change was observed in the Sham group, which used a highly similar video game therapeutic (mean change, −0.02 points; 95% CI, −0.25 to 0.28; dz = −0.01; Holm-adjusted p = 0.900). Between-group analyses showed more negative GAS-7 change in the Meliora group than in the Sham group (adjusted mean difference, −0.19 points; 95% CI, −0.30 to −0.08; d = −0.13; Holm-adjusted p = 0.001), indicating a relatively greater reduction with Meliora, whereas changes were similar between the Meliora and TAU groups (adjusted mean difference = 0.04 points; 95% CI, −0.08 to 0.15; d = 0.03; Holm-adjusted p = 0.509). Intervention usage time, experienced immersion, and their interaction were not significantly associated with changes in GAS-7 scores in either the Meliora or Sham group. Using a ≥ 25% deterioration threshold, deterioration occurred in 10.4% of participants in the Meliora group, 15.3% in the Sham group, and 9.8% in the TAU group, with no statistically significant between-group differences. Complementary per-protocol analyses among participants with greater intervention exposure were consistent with the ITT findings. These findings provide no evidence that long-term use of a video game therapeutic was associated with increased gaming-related problems in appropriately screened patients using interventions with safeguards against excessive use.
