Time-of-day can affect optimal performance in educational and professional settings.Although institutional schedules such as early morning classes are known to negatively affect sleep and academic outcomes, the impact of assignment deadlines and examination timings is less clear. Here, we examined how the timing of 16,677 assignment deadlines and 1,371 examinations associated with sleep, wellbeing, and academic performance in a cohort of 636 first-year undergraduate students over their first semester at university.Sleep was objectively tracked using a wearable device, whereas well-being was assessed through daily smartphone-delivered ecological momentary assessments. We found that nearly half (44%) of total assignments were submitted within 24 hr of its deadline. Those due earlier in the day were associated with 11-49 min shorter sleep the night before the deadline compared with a typical night.Sleep satisfaction was also poorer with earlier deadlines, whereas stress and sadness levels were highest on days with early morning deadlines.Furthermore, morning examinations were associated with 61-82 min shorter sleep than both afternoon and evening examinations. However, both morning and evening examinations were associated with 5-6 percentage points poorer course grades on average compared with examinations commencing in the afternoon.Regardless of examination time-of-day, sleep the night before an examination was associated with course performance.Notably, each hour less sleep than habitual the night before an examination was associated with a 1.2-to 3-percentage point decrease in marks achieved. These findings suggest timing of assignment deadlines and examinations as a key modulator of student sleep, well-being, and academic success. Educational Impact and Implications StatementLast-minute submissions of student assignments due earlier in the day were linked to shorter and poorer quality sleep, and reduced well-being.Both morning and evening examinations were associated with poorer academic performance compared with afternoon examinations, but scores were moderated by sleep duration the night before.
This study aims to describe the implementation of morning and evening dhikr habituation, the formation of students’ religious morals, supporting and inhibiting factors, and solutions to obstacles at SMAIT Al Ishlah Maros. This research employed a qualitative field approach. Primary data were obtained from the female student coordinator, Islamic Education teacher, and students, while secondary data consisted of school documents and archives. Data were collected through observation, structured interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was examined through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that morning and evening dhikr is implemented routinely and in a structured manner as part of the school’s religious culture. Morning dhikr starts at 07.15 and is supported by OSIS assistants and teacher supervision, while evening dhikr is arranged according to students’ prayer conditions. The habituation is associated with discipline, responsibility, calmness, politeness, social care, and awareness of worship. Supporting factors include teacher and school support, OSIS involvement, parent cooperation, clear rules, and consistent habituation. Obstacles include lateness, reduced focus, drowsiness, peer distraction, desire to finish quickly, and weather conditions. Solutions include repeated dhikr for late students, strengthened supervision, coordination with parents and transportation providers, moving activities indoors during rain, and educational sanctions such as short religious talks.

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is strongly associated with increased suicide risk, with psychological pain considered an important experiential dimension related to suicide vulnerability. Within the framework of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPTS), perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and acquired capability for suicide are key interpersonal constructs associated with suicidal ideation and behavior. In addition, alexithymia and chronotype have also been linked to depression and suicidality. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 121 patients with MDD and 141 healthy controls. Participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory, Psychache Scale, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire, Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire, and Acquired Capability for Suicide Scale. Group comparisons, correlation analyses, and multiple linear regression analyses were performed. Results: Compared with controls, individuals with MDD showed higher levels of psychological pain, depressive symptoms, alexithymia, interpersonal unmet needs, and acquired capability for suicide, and were more likely to exhibit an evening chronotype. Psychological pain was positively associated with depressive symptoms, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, alexithymia, and acquired capability for suicide. In the multivariable model, perceived burdensomeness showed the strongest association with psychological pain, followed by depressive symptom severity and thwarted belongingness. Conclusion: Psychological pain in MDD appears to be closely associated with interpersonal unmet needs, particularly perceived burdensomeness. These findings highlight the importance of evaluating psychological pain together with IPTS-related interpersonal constructs in comprehensive clinical assessments of individuals with depression.
Our study examines the role of leaders in employee recovery. We hypothesize that supervisor support for recovery (between-person) will buffer the impact of daily workload (within-person) on evening psychological detachment (within-person). We tested this hypothesis with a 7-day experience sampling methodology study using data from 545 employees, 1970 valid end-of-work observations (51% response rate), and 2040 valid end-of-day observations (53% response rate), with 1321 days containing both an end-of-work and end-of-day observation (34% completion rate) during the study period. Using multilevel regression analysis, we found that higher supervisor support for recovery did buffer the negative effect of workload, such that even on days with high workload, employees with high supervisor support for recovery were better able to psychologically detach from work in the evenings than their counterparts. Our results indicate that positive leadership behavior supporting employee recovery can be beneficial for helping employees manage the variations in workload demands through more effective recovery. This study is one of the first to incorporate leader behavior on the effect of the daily relationship between workload and evening psychological detachment. Finally, supervisor support for recovery can be a key target for organizational intervention to support employee recovery and well-being.
Background Evidence regarding whether exercise timing differentially affects sleep quality and mood remains inconsistent. This study examined the effects of acute and regular exercise performed at different times of day on sleep and mood. Methods Eight English and Chinese databases were searched from inception to June 2026. Parallel and crossover randomized trials were synthesized using three-level meta-analysis with non-diagonal sampling variance-covariance matrices. Exercise vs. Control and direct Time vs. Time comparisons were analyzed separately, with CR2 cluster-robust inference used as a robustness check. Results Thirteen studies contributed 81 effect sizes (40 sleep and 41 mood). For sleep, Exercise vs. Control showed a large effect in the conventional model (g = 0.86, 95% CI [0.26, 1.46], p = 0.005), but CR2 inference was non-significant ( p = 0.109). Direct Time vs. Time comparisons were non-significant (g = 0.15, 95% CI [−0.08, 0.39], p = 0.209; CR2 p = 0.127), with no stable advantage for morning, afternoon, or evening exercise. For mood, Exercise vs. Control was large but non-significant (g = 0.95, p = 0.056). Time vs. Time was significant conventionally (g = 0.30, p = 0.027) but not under CR2 inference ( p = 0.097). Afternoon vs. Evening favored afternoon exercise (g = 0.50, p = 0.001), although based on only two studies. Conclusion Exercise itself may be more important than its specific timing for sleep, whereas mood may show timing-related signals that remain insufficiently robust for definitive recommendations.
Mood follows a well-documented circadian rhythm. Sleep timing and duration are similarly shaped by biological and social factors. However, large-scale, real-world data on how these patterns vary across demographic groups remain limited. Prior studies often rely on laboratory data or social media linguistic analysis, which lack direct self-reports. This study examines hourly, weekly, and demographic trends in mood and sleep duration reports using one of the largest online datasets of directly self-reported behavioral health: 468,092 Lumosity users (aged 20–79) who reported daily mood (−2 to +2 scale) and sleep duration (≤5–9 + hours). We assessed variation by time of day, day of week, and interactions of age, gender, and race/ethnicity using ANOVA and linear regression. Mood was higher among users reporting in the afternoon and evening, and lower from late night through morning. Mood showed a U-shaped pattern with age, consistent throughout the week, and longer sleep duration was linked to better mood reports throughout the day and week. Sleep duration varied by time of report and by day of week, with longer durations in the afternoon/evening and on weekends. Women reported longer sleep overall, Black users reported shorter sleep, and sleep duration declined from young adulthood through midlife before rising slightly among older users. Higher mood was associated with longer sleep, and the weekday-weekend mood difference was larger among users reporting longer sleep. These findings demonstrate the value of large-scale digital data for public health insight, highlighting demographic disparities in sleep and the importance of midlife as a key intervention period. Because the sample is likely skewed toward higher educational attainment and health engagement, disparity estimates may understate true population-level differences. The late-night peak in negative affect aligns with literature on nocturnal suicide risk, though this nonclinical sample cannot directly speak to clinical risk or crisis-service need.
Objectives This study aimed to describe shift work patterns in Europe using a data-driven approach and evaluate their impact on adverse sleep outcomes. Methods We analyzed 6245 participants from the SHIFT2HEALTH survey across eight European countries, who provided information on work schedules, shift work metrics, sleep quality and timing (MCTQshift) across different shifts, and chronic insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index). We used mixtures of von Mises-Fisher models to identify shift clusters based on shift start and end times and evaluated differences in shift-specific sleep duration and quality using Bayesian multilevel models. Associations of shift metrics with short average sleep duration and chronic insomnia, adjusting for confounders, were evaluated using Bayesian logistic regression. Results We identified five shift clusters: day, evening and night (mean shift lengths: 7.8, 7.9 and 9.5 hours, respectively), long day and long evening (mean lengths: 10.5 and 12.8 hours, respectively). Sleep duration and quality varied between clusters, with the shortest duration [mean 6.00, 95% credible interval (CI) 5.95–6.06 hours] and poorest quality (29.3% “poor”/“very poor”) sleep reported between night shifts. Compared to day workers, greater chronic insomnia odd ratios (OR) were observed among participants with >90% night shifts (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.01–1.58), rotating shifts (OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.22–1.65) and with longer night work history (OR ≥16 years 1.28, 95% CI 1.08–1.52). These variables and longer weekly working hours [OR 6.10h increase 1.13, 95% CI 1.04–1.22) were associated with short sleep. Conclusions Data-driven analyses of work schedules may provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the impact of real-world shift work patterns on sleep.
