Digital dinacharya and workplace burnout: a cross-sectional analytical study of occupational health

Neha S. Maske; Kirti Bhausaheb Gaikwad; Meera K Bhojani International Journal of Research in Medical Sciences, 2026, Vol. 14, Issue 11, pp. 5233-5240 https://doi.org/10.18203/2320-6012.ijrms20264183

Background: Prolonged screen exposure, after-hours connectivity, and sedentary work are linked to poor sleep and occupational burnout among Indian working professionals. Ayurvedic Dinacharya regulates waking, Vyayama, Bhojana Vidhi, and Nidra Vidhi; however, digital-era disruption of these domains among working adults remains unstudied. This study aimed to assess digital lifestyle behaviours mapped to Dinacharya principles as behavioural markers of Pragyaparadha, in relation to sleep quality and occupational burnout among working adults, and to identify behaviours independently associated with poor sleep and higher burnout. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical survey (STROBE-reported) was conducted at the All-India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, during (January 2026 to July 2026), among 400 working adults aged 25-40 years with ≥1 year of occupational experience. A structured proforma captured sociodemographic details and Dinacharya-mapped digital behaviours across five domains (morning routine, bedtime device use, after-hours connectivity, screen breaks/sedentary time, mealtime practices). Sleep quality and burnout were assessed using the PSQI and Copenhagen burnout inventory. Results: Of 400 participants, 56.8% had poor sleep quality, 61% personal burnout, and 55.8% work-related burnout. Bedtime device use and inadequate screen breaks/sedentary behaviour independently predicted poor sleep (aOR 1.76 and 1.98). After-hours connectivity, sedentary behaviour, and mealtime digital engagement predicted personal burnout; bedtime device use, sedentary behaviour, mealtime digital engagement, and digital overload predicted work-related burnout (all p<0.05). Conclusions: Digital lifestyle behaviours reflect patterns of Pragyaparadha in daily digital conduct. Interpreted through Dinacharya and Nidra, the findings support a culturally grounded, preventive Digital Dinacharya framework for digital-era occupational health.

Digital Screen Addiction and Psychological Well-Being among Ghanaian Basic School Children: A School Management Perspective

Oheneba Kofi Nti; Racheal Amoah; Emmanuel Duncan British Journal of Education Learning and Development Psychology, 2026, Vol. 9, Issue 2, pp. 93 https://doi.org/10.52589/bjeldp-pd7dweva

The digital revolution has fundamentally transformed childhood experience across the globe. In Ghana, rapid mobile internet penetration, the proliferation of low-cost smartphones, and COVID-19-induced remote learning have dramatically intensified basic school children's exposure to digital screens. Emerging evidence links digital screen addiction (DSA) to significant impairments in children's psychological well-being encompassing emotional, cognitive, social, and behavioural dimensions. Yet, school management responses in Ghanaian basic schools remain underdeveloped and largely uncoordinated. This narrative literature review synthesizes global and sub-Saharan African evidence on digital screen addiction and its psychological well-being consequences among basic school children (ages 5–15), critically examines existing school management frameworks, and proposes a School-Based Digital Wellness Management Framework (SBDWMF) for Ghanaian basic schools. A narrative synthesis approach was employed. Literature was sourced from PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, PsycINFO, African Journals Online (AJOL), and grey literature from the WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF, Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Health Service (GHS), and the Ministry of Education. Peer-reviewed empirical studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and policy documents published from 2010 to 2024 were included, with a total of 72 sources forming the evidence base. DSA is prevalent among basic school-age children globally, with pooled prevalence estimates ranging from 19% to 38% depending on measurement tools and contexts. Excessive screen exposure is consistently associated with psychological distress, anxiety, depression, attentional difficulties, emotional dysregulation, impaired self-esteem, peer-relationship deficits, and poor academic well-being. In Ghana, contextual risk amplifiers, including parental digital literacy gaps, absent school mental health services, post-COVID normalization of extended screen use, and fragmented policy, compound the psychological burden. School management frameworks in Ghanaian basic schools are largely inadequate to address DSA, with critical deficits in policy, counselling capacity, teacher training, and parental engagement. DSA poses a mounting psychological well-being challenge for Ghanaian basic school children, demanding an urgent, evidence-informed school management response. The proposed six-pillar SBDWMF offers a practical governance architecture for Ghanaian basic school heads, district education officers, and national policymakers to address DSA comprehensively within the school setting.

Rising with resilience – strengthening the inner world of Indian pre-adolescents

Meera Saravanan; Anandy Mahalingan; Bavishakithya Ilankannan International Journal of Contemporary Pediatrics, 2026, Vol. 13, Issue 11, pp. 2372-2378 https://doi.org/10.18203/2349-3291.ijcp20263829

Pre-adolescence 9-12 years is a critical developmental period characterized by rapid biological, emotional, cognitive, and social changes that influence future mental health and well-being. Indian pre-adolescents increasingly encounter academic pressure, changing family dynamics, peer challenges, and extensive digital exposure, creating potential risks to emotional adjustment. Resilience, defined as the ability to adapt positively to adversity and recover from challenging experiences, is an important protective factor during this formative stage. This article aims to examine the determinants and dimensions of resilience among Indian pre-adolescents and to propose a culturally relevant, integrated framework for promoting resilience across biological, psychological, social, and digital domains. This article highlights key factors that strengthen resilience, including emotional regulation, self-esteem, self-compassion, problem-solving skills, supportive parenting, positive school environments, healthy peer relationships, and community connectedness. Digital resilience is also emphasized, encompassing safe technology use, digital literacy, responsible online behavior, and adaptive coping with cyberbullying, online risks, and excessive screen exposure. Based on existing evidence and contextual insights, the integrated pre-adolescent resilience model (IPARM) is proposed, integrating biological, psychological, social, and digital dimensions. Resilience promotion strategies are discussed at individual, family, school, community, and healthcare levels, with nurses and other health professionals playing an important role in early identification of vulnerable children, mental health promotion, and implementation of resilience-building interventions. Strengthening resilience during pre-adolescence represents a valuable preventive mental health strategy. A holistic and culturally responsive approach can foster emotional competence, psychological well-being, adaptability, and healthy development, enabling Indian children to navigate contemporary challenges and develop into confident and resilient individuals.

Environmental factors and polygenic risk score for psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders in children with dyslexia

Haoxue Wang; Hong Fan; Rundong Liu; Kaiheng Zhu; Zhen Xiang; Shuai Zhao; … Translational Psychiatry, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41398-026-04429-0

Developmental dyslexia (DD) impacts learning achievement and psychosocial development and is associated with various environmental factors and also genetic factors. Here, we conducted a multi-center case-control study by screening 29,820 primary school students between 2–6 grades in four cities in China and enrolled 948 dyslexia cases who meet the criteria of dyslexia and 948 controls with matching age and sex. We comprehensively investigated the environmental factors using the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning model and Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) algorithm. The most important risk factors in dyslexia are the proactive learning habit, the age of child’s literacy, maternal education level, out-migrant workers, and prolonged screen exposure during pregnancy. The home literacy environment accounted for most of the variance within both groups. Then we examined shared polygenic risks between DD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder using polygenic risk score (PRS) analyses. The results showed that the highest PRS DD quartile had a 2.13-fold risk than the lowest quartile with risk factors adjusted (95% CI: 1.08, 4.18). The individuals with the highest PRS ASD quartile and PRS SCZ quartile (OR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.14, 3.98 and OR: 2.41; 95% CI: 1.23, 4.72) were associated with increasing dyslexia risks. This study identified the importance of screening personalized environmental factors among dyslexia and highlighted the shared genetic architecture between dyslexia and other disorders. These findings offered novel insight into the etiology of dyslexia, contributing to the advancement of early prevention strategies.

Screen exposure and cognitive outcomes in school-aged children and adolescents: a narrative review through the lens of Cognitive Load Theory

Hiya Al Kalbani; Erin Ann Kitt-Lewis Frontiers in Developmental Psychology, 2026, Vol. 4 https://doi.org/10.3389/fdpys.2026.1958088

The increasing integration of digital media into children's lives has raised concerns about possible associations between screen exposure and cognitive development. This narrative review synthesizes empirical evidence published from 2014 to 2025 on associations between screen exposure and attention, memory, executive function, and related developmental outcomes among school-aged children (6–11 years) and adolescents (12–18 years) and interprets the findings through Cognitive Load Theory. Searches of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar were conducted in May 2025 and updated in June 2025. Following duplicate removal and screening by one reviewer, 13 empirical studies were included. The evidence encompassed cross-sectional, longitudinal, neuroimaging, and Mendelian randomization designs. Higher or poorly structured screen exposure was generally associated with attention difficulties, weaker working memory or executive function, academic challenges, and differences in brain regions involved in cognitive control. However, findings were not uniform: interactive, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate digital activities were sometimes associated with neutral or beneficial cognitive outcomes. Cognitive Load Theory offers a plausible interpretation in which rapid, distracting, or multitasked media increases extraneous cognitive load and leaves fewer working-memory resources for task-relevant processing and schema construction. Because most included studies were observational and screen exposure was measured inconsistently, the evidence does not establish that screen use directly causes cognitive impairment. Future research should use longitudinal or experimental designs, objective and multidimensional measures of digital use, and direct measures of cognitive load. Guidance for families and educators should consider content, context, timing, and purpose in addition to duration.

Dense connectivity in networks of red-flag language milestones among high screen-time children

Ana María Ruiz‐Ruano García; Trine Flensborg‐Madsen; Jorge López Puga Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1754404

Introduction Screen time may influence language development during early childhood, although its effects may vary depending on contextual factors. While screen use can support development when guided by adults, excessive exposure has been associated with less favorable language outcomes. Methods Data from 16,914 children (51% girls, 78% White; M = 3.03 years, SD = 1.37) were obtained from the 2023 National Survey of Children’s Health. Networks of red-flag language milestones were estimated separately for children aged 1-2 and 3-5 years. Participants were classified according to World Health Organization (WHO) screen-time recommendations (<1 h/day vs. ≥1 h/day). Results Partially regularized network models revealed denser connectivity among language-development indicators in children with higher levels of screen exposure. This pattern was reflected in a greater number of network edges and fully connected subclusters and was particularly pronounced among children aged 3-5 years. Discussion The findings suggest that higher screen-time exposure is associated with more interconnected patterns of language-development difficulties during early childhood. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of language development in the context of children’s screen use and may provide useful insights for families, educational professionals, and policymakers interested in promoting healthy developmental environments and informed decisions regarding screen exposure.

Screen exposure and reduced cognitive abilities, language development, and tactile exploration in very preterm infants aged 12 months—A pilot study

M. C. Liverani; L. Lordier; M. Durand-Ruel; E. Gillioz; R. Ha-Vinh Leuchter; E. Gentaz; … Frontiers in Developmental Psychology, 2026, Vol. 4 https://doi.org/10.3389/fdpys.2026.1875016

Background Children are increasingly exposed to digital media from an early age. Screen exposure has been linked to poorer parent–child interactions, and less optimal language, cognitive, motor, and socio-emotional development. However, few studies have explored these relationships specifically in children born preterm. Methods Sixty-four very preterm infants (VPT; <32 weeks gestation) were assessed at 12-months corrected age. Data on media use within families and infant screen exposure were measured using the Family Media Use questionnaire. Psychomotor development, socio-emotional functioning, and tactile exploration abilities were evaluated using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development III (BSID III) and experimental tasks. Results At 12 months of age, most parents (72%) reported using screens in the presence of their child, with an average daily duration of 1 h. Furthermore, 39% of VPT infants were directly exposed to screens, averaging 4 h per week. No difference was observed in BSID III scores between infants exposed to screens and those who were not. Furthermore, across the entire cohort, no significant association was found between screen exposure and developmental outcomes. However, among infants exposed to screens, greater direct screen exposure was negatively associated with cognitive and language scores (ρ = −0.34, p = 0.048; ρ = −0.56, p = 0.002, respectively) as well as to tactile exploration (ρ = −0.39, p = 0.02), but not to prosocial behavior or joint attention. These associations remained significant after controlling gestational age at birth and parents' socio-economic status. Conclusions Early direct screen exposure in VPT infants is associated with lower language and cognitive performance, and reduced tactile exploration, highlighting potential developmental implications even within the first year. No associations were observed in socio-emotional skills suggesting that these aspects may evolve differently or become apparent later in development. The effects of screen exposure on the development of infants born VPT have not been extensively studied, and further research is needed to support families in offering alternatives to screen use.

Screen time and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Frontiers in Pediatrics, 2026, Vol. 14 https://doi.org/10.3389/fped.2026.1860549

Background Children's exposure to electronic screens has risen sharply. This study quantitatively evaluated the association between excessive screen time and childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) risk through a systematic review and meta-analysis, exploring the moderating roles of age and media type. Methods Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched observational studies assessing children's screen time and ADHD, and finally included 10 observational studies with overall low-to-moderate risk of bias. Risk of bias was evaluated using the ROBINS-I tool. Continuous data were unified using the Chinn conversion rule. A DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model calculated pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Subgroup analyses, leave-one-out sensitivity analyses, and Begg's and Egger's tests were also conducted. Results Excessive screen time was significantly associated with elevated childhood ADHD risk (pooled OR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.31–1.87, P < 0.001). Substantial between-study heterogeneity was observed (Q = 344.51, I 2 = 97.4%, P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed significant age-related heterogeneity: preschoolers (0–6 years) showed a larger magnitude of association (OR = 2.40, 95% CI: 1.44–3.98), whereas the association in school-age children and adolescents (>6 years) was of smaller magnitude (OR = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.05–1.29). Passive TV/video viewing showed a higher point estimate of ADHD risk (OR = 2.20) than interactive digital media (OR = 1.10), but the between-group difference did not reach statistical significance. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of these findings. Conclusions Excessive screen exposure is significantly associated with elevated ADHD risk in children, with distinct age-specific and media type-specific patterns. The preschool period appears to be a high-risk window for screen-related neurodevelopmental effects, with a trend toward stronger association for passive screen exposure. Public health and clinical interventions should prioritize restricting early screen exposure, particularly passive, fast-paced videos without substantial interaction.

۵۱، I ۲ = ۹۷.
