Early childhood is a critical period for emotional development and behavioral regulation. Increasing digital device use among young children has raised concerns about its association with tantrum behavior, although research examining addiction-related use rather than screen duration alone remains limited. This study aimed to examine the relationship between gadget addiction levels and tantrum behavior among children aged 4–6 years at Widya Santhi Buana Kindergarten, West Denpasar District. A quantitative correlational approach with a cross-sectional design was employed, involving 45 parents or guardians recruited through total sampling. Data were collected on April 15, 2026, through online questionnaires administered using Google Forms. The instruments comprised an adapted Digital Addiction Scale for Children with 25 items, which demonstrated high internal consistency during pilot testing (Cronbach’s α = .977), and the 31-item Rating Scale of Angry Emotional Behavior and Temper Tantrum. Univariate analysis summarized the distributions of gadget addiction levels and tantrum behavior, while Spearman’s rank correlation assessed their relationship. The results showed that 48.9% of children were classified as having moderate gadget addiction levels. Regarding tantrum behavior, 53.3% were classified as exhibiting no tantrum behavior, whereas 22.2% were classified as exhibiting severe tantrum behavior. A strong, positive, and statistically significant correlation was identified between gadget addiction levels and tantrum behavior (ρ = .641, p < .001). Higher parent-reported gadget addiction levels were therefore associated with greater tantrum severity within the participating group. The cross-sectional design and reliance on parent-reported measures limit causal interpretation. These findings may inform parent education concerning supervised device use and consistent family rules. Further research should include larger samples, examine parenting styles and other relevant factors, and use longitudinal designs to clarify the direction of the relationship.
Background: Digital devices have become very important in education. Students are increasingly spending their time on screen for education and other use. However, prolonged screen exposure has led to increasing complaints of digital eye strain, an emerging public health concern. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 165 undergraduate medical students in a tertiary care centre. A pilot studied; semi-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was entered in Microsoft excel and analysed. Results: The prevalence of digital eye strain among undergraduate medical students was found to be 52.7%. Most common symptom noted were Headache (68.5%), Itching (60.6%), tearing of eyes (58.1%). There was a significant association between the duration of mobile screen usage (>4 hours) and digital eye strain (p value=0.0303). Conclusions: Digital eye strain is a common health concern among medical students. Higher the hours of mobile screen use, greater is the risk of digital eye strain.
Aim and background: Sleep is a biological necessity essential for physical and mental well-being, yet many young adults, particularly college students, experience sleep disruptions due to major life changes and poor sleep hygiene. This study aimed to identify the determinants of insomnia among undergraduate female students in a rural area of Haryana.Materials and methods: A mixed-method study was conducted between May 2024 and May 2025 involving 340 undergraduate female students.Quantitative data were collected using a semi-structured socio-demographic questionnaire and the insomnia severity index (ISI).Qualitative insights were gathered through in-depth interviews (IDI) with 15 students identified with clinically significant insomnia.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 26, with significance set at p < 0.05.Results: The prevalence of clinically significant insomnia in the cohort was 5.6% (n = 19).Quantitative analysis revealed that the participant's state of origin was the only statistically significant socio-demographic determinant (p = 0.031).Students from states other than Haryana reported a significantly higher insomnia prevalence (12.5%) compared to those from Haryana (4.2%).Factors such as age, socio-economic status, and type of occupancy showed no significant correlation.Qualitative themes highlighted academic performance, overuse of electronic devices, social environment, and psycho-social stress as primary triggers. Conclusion: While the prevalence of insomnia is relatively low, it is significantly driven by academic transitions, excessive screen time, and communal living challenges.A notable awareness-action gap exists, as students recognize the importance of sleep but prefer self-management or mindfulness over professional clinical help.
Aim and background: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is reported far less often than poor nocturnal sleep quality in Indian medical students. We aimed to estimate EDS prevalence and its independent correlates (primary), and to compare these with poor sleep quality correlates in the same cohort and relate both to examination performance (secondary). We hypothesized that sleep hygiene behavior, not global sleep quality category, would dominate.Materials and methods: Prospective cross-sectional study of 354 of 450 eligible MBBS students (78.7%) at a Southern Indian college, sampled by stratified proportional randomization.Under supervised standardized administration, they completed the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS; EDS >10), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI), with screen time, stress, mood, lifestyle, clinical covariates, and the latest university examination percentage.Excessive daytime sleepiness correlates were examined by logistic regression with a pre-specified confounder-adjusted sensitivity model. Results: Excessive daytime sleepiness affected 21.5% [95% confidence interval (CI) 17.5-26.0],more often among poor than good sleepers (27.7% vs 18.6%).Adjusted [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) 0.773, 0.714-0.832],only poorer sleep hygiene remained independent [odds ratio (OR) 1.12 per point, 1.07-1.18],unchanged after adjustment for all measured confounders (1.12, 1.06-1.17).Examination percentage did not differ by sleep status (67.33 ± 5.16 vs 68.07 ± 5.72; p = 0.229); academic stage and sex, not sleep, predicted marks (R² = 0.152).Conclusion: In this cross-sectional sample, EDS was associated more closely with sleep hygiene behavior than with global sleep quality category, and the two had distinct correlation profiles.Screening for sleepiness alongside sleep quality, and addressing bedtime device use, merit consideration in student health services. These are associations only; no direction of effect can be inferred.Clinical significance: Measuring EDS alongside global sleep quality identifies a partly distinct at-risk group, for whom brief counselling on bedtime device use may be more specific than generic sleep hygiene advice.
Aims and background: The sleep-wake cycle and sleep consolidation are essential to children's growth and development. There is a paucity of studies on the sleep characteristics and the effect of electronic media on them in healthy Indian infants and toddlers. The objectives were to assess the sleep characteristics of healthy Indian infants and toddlers and to examine the impact of electronic media on them.Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study at a tertiary center in India, among healthy children aged 3-36 months. Those with concurrent illness (e.g., gastroenteritis, respiratory illness) were excluded.A Hindi version of the Revised Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ-R) was used to assess sleep patterns. Results: A total of 100 children were enrolled during the study period; their median (IQR) age was 12.1 (3.5, 18) months, with most of them being males (74%).The median (IQR) total sleep duration was 11 (10.0,13.3) hours.Electronic media exposure was noted in 83 (83%) children.Of them, 27 (32.5%)children were exposed to ≥1 hour/day.There was no significant difference in sleep duration, night awakenings, or wakefulness between media-exposed and media-unexposed groups in children.Similarly, there was no significant effect of media exposure on sleep characteristics. Conclusion: Sleep duration in infants and toddlers was below the international recommendation.A majority of children had exposure to electronic media, and one-third had exposure of at least 1 hour.Approximately three-fourths of parents didn't perceive the child's sleep problems.Clinical significance: There is an urgent need to routinely evaluate sleep characteristics in infants and toddlers and to increase awareness of sleep hygiene and media exposure among parents.
The widespread availability of smartphones and internet access has made TikTok part of children’s everyday entertainment. This situation requires parents to guide children not only by limiting screen time but also through communication that helps children understand appropriate content and use. This study aims to describe and analyse parents’ interpersonal communication patterns in controlling TikTok use among children aged 7–12 years in Villa Gading Harapan 5 Housing Estate, Tambun Utara, Bekasi. The study used a descriptive qualitative design. Data were collected from April to June 2026 through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation. Five parents were selected as key informants using purposive sampling, while two children participated as supporting informants. The data were analysed through data reduction, presentation, conclusion drawing, and technique triangulation. The findings show that parents apply the five elements of effective interpersonal communication proposed by Joseph A. DeVito: openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality. Supportiveness is the most visible element, expressed through advice about age-appropriate content, direct supervision, time limits, and diversion to other activities. Openness remains the most vulnerable element because one child tended to restrict parental access to digital activities. The study indicates that controlling TikTok use is more effective when rules are accompanied by warm dialogue, emotional understanding, and opportunities for children to express their views. Parents should therefore maintain consistent, non-judgmental conversations and make digital supervision part of daily family interaction.
Digital media has evolved from passive screen viewing into an algorithmically curated ecosystem of social platforms, short form video, games, generative artificial intelligence (AI), conversational agents, connected toys and educational technologies. These systems can support learning, creativity, communication, disability access and healthcare; however, engagement optimized design, commercial surveillance and synthetic content create risks that are not adequately captured by screen-time measures alone. This narrative review examines the effects of contemporary digital ecosystems on child and adolescent health and outlines implications for pediatric practice. PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar and guidance from the World Health Organization, United Nations Children's Fund, UNESCO and the American Academy of Pediatrics were reviewed, with emphasis on evidence published from 2019 to June 2026. Associations have been reported between problematic digital media use and sleep disruption, reduced physical activity, visual and musculoskeletal symptoms, obesity related behaviours, anxiety, depressive symptoms, cyberbullying, disordered eating and impaired attention. Causal interpretation remains difficult because effects are heterogeneous, often small, bidirectional and strongly modified by age, content, context, displacement, family relationships and pre-existing vulnerability. AI adds distinct concerns: persuasive personalization, inaccurate health information, anthropomorphic dependency, deepfakes, sexual exploitation, biased outputs, privacy loss and erosion of learning through uncritical outsourcing. Benefits are also substantial when technologies are developmentally appropriate, evidence-based, inclusive and used with adult support. Pediatric counselling should shift from counting hours alone toward assessing the child's digital ecosystem, sleep, function, content, compulsivity, safety and relationships. Effective protection requires shared family practices, school digital literacy, safety by design, age-appropriate assurance, transparent algorithms, data minimization and independent research. The goal is not a screen free childhood but a child centred digital environment that supports health, agency and development.
Objectives: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) infection has affected the lives of all strata of society since its beginning. To control the spread of the disease, a lockdown was imposed. During this time, there was a substantial increase in the usage of gadgets and reduction in outdoor activities because of online studies that resulted in serious the mental health issues, especially in the paediatric population. Material and Methods: To study the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on screen time, playtime and behaviour of the students, the study was conducted on 153 subjects of 4–18 years age group attending the outpatient department, over a period of 3 months. A questionnaire format of ten questions was framed that was asked from the children or from their parents/guardians. This study included questions such as time spent on online classes, self-study or study with parents and gadgets used for the online classes. Results: Most of the children were students of classes upper kinder garden and I, comprising 19.0% and 18.3%, respectively. Females outnumbered males in the study. Weight gain was observed in 43.8%, and signs of irritability were observed in 68.0% of the children. Weight gain showed a statistically significant correlation with the duration of online classes, indoor and outdoor playtime with p-values of 0.044, <0.005 and 0.005, respectively. There was also a statistically significant correlation between change in behaviour with outdoor playtime and sleep timings with p < 0.005 and 0.019, respectively. Conclusion: This study concluded that there was a significant increase in screen time and a decrease in outdoor play activities during the time of COVID-19 pandemic with a statistically significant correlation with the weight gain and change in behaviour of the children.
Background Suicidal behaviors among adolescents are a serious global public health concern and are closely linked to both mental health and everyday lifestyle behaviors. Suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts lie along a spectrum of increasing severity. However, how psychological distress and health-related behaviors interact to influence suicide risk is complex and not yet fully understood. This study aimed to identify key mental health and lifestyle factors associated with different stages of adolescent suicidal behaviors using interpretable machine learning methods. Methods Data were obtained from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBS), a nationally representative survey of U.S. high school students. After data cleaning and multiple imputation, 16,946 adolescents aged 14–18 years were included in the analysis. Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) models were developed to predict suicidal ideation, suicide planning, and suicide attempts. Model performance was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and related metrics. Feature importance was examined using gain-based measures, while SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and partial dependence plots were used to explore the direction, strength, and nonlinear effects of key predictors. Results All three XGBoost models showed satisfactory predictive performance. Mental health factors, particularly persistent feelings of sadness and self-rated mental health, were the strongest predictors across all stages of suicidal behaviors. Lifestyle behaviors, including sleep duration, physical activity, diet, screen time, and substance use, also contributed meaningfully to risk prediction, although their relative importance differed by outcome. SHAP analyses indicated that greater sadness and poorer mental health were strongly associated with higher suicide risk, whereas adequate sleep and higher levels of physical activity were associated with lower predicted risk. Substance use, including alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use, played an important role in predicting suicide attempts than suicidal ideation or planning. Partial dependence analyses showed nonlinear and threshold effects, especially for sadness, mental health status, and sleep duration. Conclusion Mental health factors, especially persistent sadness and overall psychological well-being, were among the most prominent factors associated with suicidal behaviors among adolescents, while lifestyle behaviors showed important and stage-specific associations. Interpretable machine learning approaches help identify complex and nonlinear patterns associated with adolescent suicide risk and offer valuable insights to guide targeted, evidence-based prevention efforts.
The rapid expansion of digital technologies has changed the learning environment in which preschool children grow and develop. However, digital literacy in early childhood should not be reduced to the ability to operate a smartphone or tablet. It includes age-appropriate knowledge, practical skills, attitudes and safe patterns of interaction with digital information and tools. This article develops a methodological framework for forming preschool children's digital literacy through purposeful use of digital learning tools in activity centers. The study uses theoretical analysis, comparative analysis of international guidance, pedagogical modeling and methodological generalization. The proposed framework integrates digital tools into language, mathematics, science, construction, art, role-play and music-oriented activity centers while preserving hands-on, social and movement-based learning. A four-stage model—motivation and orientation, guided exploration, creative production, and reflection and transfer—is proposed. The article also identifies methodological principles, teacher roles, criteria for selecting digital content, indicators for monitoring children's progress, and safeguards related to screen balance, privacy, accessibility and adult co-engagement. The proposed approach positions technology as a pedagogical means rather than an independent learning goal and can be adapted to preschool institutions with different levels of technological provision.

Objectives Smoking, alcohol drinking, dietary habits, physical activity, screen time, and sleep duration have been examined separately in relation to suicidality. Based on these behaviors, this study aimed to develop a composite measure of a healthy lifestyle, and to explore its associations with suicidal behaviors among Chinese young people aged 10–24 years. Methods Data were obtained from 2022 Zhejiang Youth Risk Behavior Survey, in which 27,059 students aged 10–24 years completed an anonymous questionnaire designed to assess the health behaviors. A healthy lifestyle score was calculated and categorized into favorable, intermediate, and unfavorable lifestyle categories. Multivariate logistic regression models were employed to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for suicidal behaviors. Results Overall, 21.12% of students followed a favorable lifestyle, 56.67% followed an intermediate lifestyle, and 22.21% followed an unfavorable lifestyle. Compared to unfavorable lifestyle, students with intermediate and favorable lifestyle had lower odds of suicidal ideation, with the OR was 0.67 (95% CI: 0.62–0.72) and 0.40 (0.36–0.45); for suicidal plans, the corresponding OR was 0.61 (0.55–0.67) and 0.37 (0.31–0.44); for suicidal attempts, the corresponding OR was 0.53 (0.45–0.62) and 0.27 (0.20–0.37). Conclusions This study suggested that adherence to healthy lifestyles combining seven modifiable lifestyle factors were significantly associated with the lower odds of suicidal behaviors engagement in Chinese young people.
Introduction Screen time may influence language development during early childhood, although its effects may vary depending on contextual factors. While screen use can support development when guided by adults, excessive exposure has been associated with less favorable language outcomes. Methods Data from 16,914 children (51% girls, 78% White; M = 3.03 years, SD = 1.37) were obtained from the 2023 National Survey of Children’s Health. Networks of red-flag language milestones were estimated separately for children aged 1-2 and 3-5 years. Participants were classified according to World Health Organization (WHO) screen-time recommendations (<1 h/day vs. ≥1 h/day). Results Partially regularized network models revealed denser connectivity among language-development indicators in children with higher levels of screen exposure. This pattern was reflected in a greater number of network edges and fully connected subclusters and was particularly pronounced among children aged 3-5 years. Discussion The findings suggest that higher screen-time exposure is associated with more interconnected patterns of language-development difficulties during early childhood. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of language development in the context of children’s screen use and may provide useful insights for families, educational professionals, and policymakers interested in promoting healthy developmental environments and informed decisions regarding screen exposure.
Background The pervasive use of social media and recreational internet platforms among students has become increasingly evident. The proper use of devices for students is critical; excessive use leads to a negative impact on students in many areas of their lives. This study aimed to explore the challenges parents face when their children engage in excessive use of electronic digital screens. Background Adolescents globally exhibit growing engagement with discretionary screen time, but its association with depressive symptoms remains unclear in developing economies. Objective To examine the relationship between discretionary screen time and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents. Methods A cross-sectional study of 4,706 adolescents in Maoming City, Guangdong Province, China. Participants were stratified into four discretionary screen time categories: <1 h ( n = 1,372), 1–2 h ( n = 1,277), 2–4 h ( n = 1,032), and ≥4 h ( n = 1,025). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the validated CESD-9, with a cutoff score of ≥10. The primary analysis was a multilevel logistic regression model with random intercepts for school and class, adjusted for all measured covariates except BMI, anxiety and insomnia; a model additionally adjusted for BMI, anxiety and insomnia served as a sensitivity analysis. Subgroup analyses evaluated potential effect modification. Results The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 29.7% (1,398/4,706). In the primary multilevel model (random intercepts for school and class; adjusted for sociodemographic, socioeconomic and lifestyle factors, without BMI, anxiety and insomnia), compared with the <1 h reference group, the odds ratios were 1.21 (95% CI: 0.98–1.49; p = 0.082) for 1–2 h, 1.88 (95% CI: 1.52–2.33; p < 0.001) for 2–4 h, and 2.54 (95% CI: 2.04–3.16; p < 0.001) for ≥4 h; each screen-time category increment was associated with 39% higher odds of depressive symptoms (OR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.29–1.49; p < 0.001). When additionally adjusted for BMI, anxiety and insomnia (sensitivity analysis, Model 4), the associations were attenuated but remained statistically significant for the higher categories (≥4 h: OR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.28–2.22; per-category OR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.09–1.29). Subgroup analyses revealed no statistically significant evidence of effect modification (all p -interaction >0.05). Conclusion Prolonged discretionary screen time is significantly associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents, indicating a graded association that strengthens with increasing screen time. These findings are relevant to public-health monitoring of discretionary screen use in adolescents.
Background Children's exposure to electronic screens has risen sharply. This study quantitatively evaluated the association between excessive screen time and childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) risk through a systematic review and meta-analysis, exploring the moderating roles of age and media type. Methods Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched observational studies assessing children's screen time and ADHD, and finally included 10 observational studies with overall low-to-moderate risk of bias. Risk of bias was evaluated using the ROBINS-I tool. Continuous data were unified using the Chinn conversion rule. A DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model calculated pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Subgroup analyses, leave-one-out sensitivity analyses, and Begg's and Egger's tests were also conducted. Results Excessive screen time was significantly associated with elevated childhood ADHD risk (pooled OR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.31–1.87, P < 0.001). Substantial between-study heterogeneity was observed (Q = 344.51, I 2 = 97.4%, P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed significant age-related heterogeneity: preschoolers (0–6 years) showed a larger magnitude of association (OR = 2.40, 95% CI: 1.44–3.98), whereas the association in school-age children and adolescents (>6 years) was of smaller magnitude (OR = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.05–1.29). Passive TV/video viewing showed a higher point estimate of ADHD risk (OR = 2.20) than interactive digital media (OR = 1.10), but the between-group difference did not reach statistical significance. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of these findings. Conclusions Excessive screen exposure is significantly associated with elevated ADHD risk in children, with distinct age-specific and media type-specific patterns. The preschool period appears to be a high-risk window for screen-related neurodevelopmental effects, with a trend toward stronger association for passive screen exposure. Public health and clinical interventions should prioritize restricting early screen exposure, particularly passive, fast-paced videos without substantial interaction.
۵۱، I ۲ = ۹۷.
Objectives: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to increased digital device use due to social restrictions, contributing to a rise in computer vision syndrome (CVS). Postgraduate medical students, as frontline healthcare providers, are particularly vulnerable. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, risk factors, and symptom profile of CVS among postgraduate medical students during the pandemic. Material and Methods: This is a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study conducted between January 2021 and June 2021 among 117 postgraduate medical students in the southeastern region of Bangladesh. CVS was evaluated using the CVS questionnaire, which was filled out by the respondents through online Google Forms. Results: The mean age of participants was 32.2 ± 3.1 years, with a male predominance (69/117, 59%). A significant majority used smartphones (116/117, 99.1%) for social networking (103/117, 88.0%) and studying (102/117, 87.2%). Digital screen time was longer during the COVID-19 pandemic than preCOVID, with the majority using devices for 4–6 h during COVID-19 compared to 2–4 h before. The study found a CVS prevalence of 52.1% ( n = 61), with frequent symptoms including headache, burning sensation, watering, and eye pain. A significant association was found between CVS and not taking a break during digital device use ( p = 0.041). Despite this, only 18.8% (22/117) of participants knew the 20-20-20 rule. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, ocular problems linked to excessive usage of digital gadgets have risen significantly among postgraduate medical students. The need to promote CVS awareness and symptom prevention is vital.
Screen time guidelines for preschoolers have heavily relied on duration controls. Recently, guidelines have evolved to focus on the content and context of use; however, digital health impacts are still widely measured against guideline targets that apply a one-size-fits-all assumption. Despite these recommendations, a global meta-analysis shows that only 35.6% of children under age five adhere to these guidelines. This low compliance is driven by contemporary lifestyle demands, busy parental schedules, and constrained urban spaces. Compounded by socioeconomic disparities and a lack of practical ideas for alternative activities, screens have become a default domestic childcare arrangement, escalating passive, isolated consumption. This paper introduces a three-layered ecological framework that bridges the gap between the targets of institutional guidelines and the diverse ground realities of managing digital engagement across different socioeconomic statuses. It lays out a practical blueprint to operationalize these objectives through a protocol that integrates screen awareness, meaningful alternatives, active engagement, responsive caregiving, and traditional games. This framework provides actionable guidance to help families transition from digital silos to interactive, shared spaces, aiming to alleviate parental stress and support the parent–child relationship.
Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are increasingly embedded in adolescents’ daily lives, yet developmental science research struggles to keep pace with adoption. This mixed-methods study gathered developmental expert perspectives via a survey ( n = 141 researchers studying youth and technology and adjacent professionals) and semi-structured interviews ( n = 15) to inform a coordinated research and policy agenda on adolescent AI use. The study aims were to identify (1) priority AI use cases for future study, (2) priority research questions and methods, as well as barriers to future research, and (3) societal guardrails that developmental professionals recommend enacting now, while research is underway. Participants cautioned against vague “screen time” measures and agreed that nearly all use cases merit study but prioritized those with severe or irreversible immediate-term harms, AI literacy, AI as a social/relational actor, AI-generated (mis)information, and overreliance. Participants emphasized that methodological pluralism and triangulation, including within individual studies, are essential, agreeing that different methods can be complementary to address distinct research questions. Key barriers included the rapid pace of change in AI technology and use relative to academic timelines, limited industry transparency, funding gaps, and misaligned academic incentives. Proposed solutions included shared infrastructure, interdisciplinary consortia, and community partnerships. Participants underscored that responsibility for safe AI should not rest primarily on adolescents and families and identified three immediate guardrails: enforceable youth-centered regulation, developmentally informed design, and multidimensional AI literacy. Findings clarify a preliminary direction for the field and emphasize that coordination among researchers and between sectors is needed.
Context. Screen time for children aged 3–6 years should remain the exception, be limited in duration, and be supervised by an adult. In 2022, French children aged 3–5 years spent an average of 1 hour 22 minutes a day on screens. Activities such as reading, which are beneficial to a child’s development, are sometimes neglected in favor of screen time.Objective. To create a children’s book aimed at children aged 3 to 6, with the aim of preventing inappropriate screen use. This book is designed to provide both children and their carers with an interactive reading experience that encourages discussion about screens and their potential risks.Methods. The content was defined and validated using a modified nominal group consensus method. The book’s design wasbased on the principles of dialogic interactive reading and on Sabine Duflo’s four-step method.Results. The nominal group comprised 11 members, including health professionals, education professionals, communication experts and parents. The book features five anthropomorphic characters facing problematic situations involving screens, followed by a sixth character who offers advice. The proposed interactions were inspired by a questionnaire designed to identifyinappropriate screen use. Two parenting guides are also included in the book.Conclusion. Choosing a children’s book as a mean of prevention enabled it to serve as a mediation tool between children and their environment. It was the first prevention book on screen use developed using a consensus-based method. The book could serve as a resource during consultations, helping to meet parents’ expectations by addressing the topic of the screen uses more regularly and comprehensively.
Short video applications (SVA) have become increasingly prevalent among adolescents, raising growing concerns about their potential associations with cognitive development. Although research has examined social media, screen time, and addiction, limited empirical attention has been given to how SVA usage behaviour and dependency relate to adolescents’ critical thinking. This study assessed the relationship between SVA and adolescents' critical thinking disposition using a cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected from 442 adolescents aged 15–18 at one high school in Anhui Province, China, and analysed using structural equation modelling to assess the mediation pathways. Findings showed that SVA usage behaviour was positively associated with critical openness through dependency, attitude, and perceived behavioural control. In contrast, opposing direct and indirect pathways on reflective scepticism resulted in a non-significant overall relationship. These findings suggest that greater attention may be given to adolescents’ goal-oriented SVA use rather than simply reducing screen time.
