‘Student voice’ and ‘inclusivity’ have emerged as cornerstones of assessment redesign projects. One largely unarticulated precondition for the student voice to be a meaningful determinant of assessment practices is that student preferences are consistent and specific. To find out whether this is actually the case, we developed a mixed-method approach to analysing focus group transcripts. The core of our work consists of a topic analysis and a collocation analysis. The main finding from our topic analysis is that student discourse does not revolve around a consistent set of preferences. Individual preferences get drowned out in aggregate data. Our collocation analysis shows an intense student focus on the logistics and regulation of assessment and a devastatingly bleak evaluation of them. Concerns around what is being assessed are largely absent from conversations around assessment preferences. Results point to a need to build trust at a ‘local’ level rather than seek silver bullets.

From transaction to dialogue: engaging with student voice to co-produce inclusive policies and practices in higher education

Holly White; Ruth L. Healey; Kim Ross; Chantal Worsdell; Melanie Crofts; Chantal Davies International Journal of Inclusive Education, 2026, pp. 1-19 https://doi.org/10.1080/13603116.2026.2734939

As universities, within the UK and internationally, strive to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in their practices, policies and, ultimately, cultures, it is imperative to prioritise student voice and co-production with equity-denied groups. This study examines students’ views, particularly those of equity-denied groups, on student voice mechanisms and explores opportunities to develop more inclusive approaches to policy and practice design in higher education. This article draws on the literature on co-production and student-staff partnerships to critically explore the process of moving from transactional to dialogical approaches to eliciting and responding to the ‘student voice’, emphasising how relationship builiding in policy design can facilitate a more inclusive environment. The article is underpinned by student-led focus groups with students, a survey and roundtable discussions with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion leads nationally. The findings emphasise the importance of moving from transactional feedback methods towards adopting a dialogical, partnership-based approach to policy and practice design and evaluation. The article contributes a framework for when and how to co-produce with students in higher education, particularly those from equity denied groups. We contend that when conducted meaningfully, promoting dialogical student voice mechanisms and co-producing change with students can enhance student experience and ultimately inclusion, while promoting social justice in higher education.

Facilitating more evenly distributed opportunities for participation and higher-order thinking in undergraduate tutorials using the Thinking Environment

Helen Cramman; Julieta Litka Milian; Sam Fearn; Antonia Manresa Enhancing Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, 2026, Vol. 4, pp. 108-137 https://doi.org/10.62512/etlhe.40

This paper presents two case studies in a research-intensive, high-tariff entry university in the North-East of England where the Thinking Environment (TE) approach was used in small group tutorials in Chemistry and Mathematics. The case studies investigated whether the TE could be used as an active pedagogy to facilitate a supportive atmosphere where all students felt able to voice their thoughts. An exploratory, concurrent mixed methods design was used, collecting data from peer-observation of sessions, a self-reflection journal for tutors and a survey of students. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data analysed using inductive thematic analysis, with the findings integrated at the data interpretation stage. The study found that the TE approach encouraged active engagement from students, provided an equal opportunity for all students to voice their thinking and created conditions supportive of higher-order thinking over an extended period of time. Both students and tutors acknowledged that the TE approach could be uncomfortable to begin with and that repeated practice was required to become more accustomed to the approach. The paper presents important learning for the implementation of the TE as a pedagogical approach that creates conditions supportive of higher-order thinking and creates a encouraging atmosphere where students feel able to voice their thoughts.

The SHARP assessment cycle: from assessment design and real-time student voice to student learning development

Zeenat Soobedar de Villeneuve Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education, 2026, Issue 41 https://doi.org/10.47408/jldhe.vi41.1948

Assessment in higher education often suffers from a critical disconnect where student feedback benefits future cohorts rather than current participants. This study presents SHARP (Strategic, Holistic, Adaptive, Reflective, Process), a systematic framework for embedding real-time student voice into assessment design to develop students’ assessment literacy and engagement. SHARP was piloted across three in-class Mathematics tests with 246 students on a foundation-level UK university programme using a mixed-methods quasi-experimental design with post-assessment surveys from 108 students administered before grade release. Quantitative analysis revealed statistically significant improvements in clarity ratings, whilst fairness perceptions rose from 70.3% to 96.0%. A quasi-experimental comparison with historical controls demonstrated a 73% reduction in assessment volatility, reflecting more consistent student performance across assessments. Qualitative evidence illustrated students’ developing capacity to evaluate and articulate assessment design. This pilot demonstrates SHARP’s potential as a transferable framework for student-informed assessment practice, though replication is needed to establish broader generalisability.

Community-Connected Social Studies in Junior High School: A Narrative Review of Local Inquiry, Civic Agency, and Deliberative Learning

Queen Liezame Lucip Journal of Leadership for Basic and Higher Education, 2026, Vol. 1, Issue 1, pp. 51-58 https://doi.org/10.66074/n7p9q3r6s1

Background: Junior high school Social Studies has a civic mandate beyond content mastery. Community-connected approaches may strengthen that mandate by linking disciplinary concepts to local issues, institutions, evidence, and public action. Objective: This narrative review examined how community-connected Social Studies may support adolescent civic learning, with attention to place-based inquiry, action civics, open classroom climate, civic self-efficacy, student voice, digital civic learning, and the Philippine context. Methods: A structured narrative search prioritized peer-reviewed literature from 2019 to 2025 in Social Studies, civic education, middle-level education, and adolescent civic development. Foundational and official curriculum sources were added when necessary. Sources were compared by context, instructional approach, civic outcome, and implementation condition, guided by SANRA principles. Results: Six patterns emerged. Local and place-based inquiry was strongest when community contexts functioned as evidence rather than decoration. Action-oriented experiences supported civic competence when students had authentic choices and feasible roles. Open discussion connected local relevance to democratic reasoning, while civic self-efficacy helped translate knowledge into participation intentions. Digital civic learning expanded the public sphere but required explicit source evaluation. Benefits depended on teacher preparation, classroom safety, equitable access, and community support. Philippine scholarship supports deliberative and citizenship-oriented purposes, but junior high school empirical evidence remains limited. Conclusion: Community-connected Social Studies is best understood as an instructional architecture that links local inquiry, disciplinary evidence, deliberation, civic skill, and reflective action. Philippine research should test this architecture through longitudinal and classroom-based designs.
