Academic stress is a significant psychological and educational concern among undergraduate students because university study involves high academic workload, frequent examinations, strict performance expectations, overlapping deadlines, adjustment to new learning environments, and crucial decisions about future careers. Anxiety may increase substantially when students perceive academic demands as exceeding their available coping resources, whereas self-efficacy refers to students' internal beliefs about their capability to successfully organize and execute courses of action required to manage academic tasks. The present study proposes to examine the complex relationship among academic stress, anxiety, and self-efficacy among undergraduate students. A quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational research design will be used. Undergraduate students meeting the inclusion criteria will be recruited using an appropriate non-probability sampling technique. Data will be collected using a demographic information sheet and standardized self-report measures of academic stress, anxiety, and general/academic self-efficacy. Descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression will be used to examine the study variables. The findings may assist counselling psychologists, student-support services, faculty members, and educational institutions in identifying modifiable psychological factors relevant to undergraduate adjustment.
The rapid growth of social media has transformed communication and information sharing; however, excessive use can promote procrastination and avoidance of academic tasks, contributing to increased test anxiety among students. This study explores how social media use and procrastination contribute to test anxiety among the said population. A cross-sectional design was employed with sample of 284 university students (M = 110, F = 160) with a mean X age=20.8 years selected through convenience. Social media was measured through Social Media Use Questionnaire (Xanidis and Brignell, 2016), procrastination was assessed using the Lay Procrastination Scale (Lay, 1986) and test anxiety was evaluated by Westside Test Anxiety Scale (Driscoll, 2004). Data was analyzed using correlation and regression analysis. The results revealed significant positive correlation between social media use, procrastination, and test anxiety. Regression analysis showed that both the use of social media and procrastination significantly forecasted test anxiety, indicating that an increased occurrence of problematic digital engagement and reduced self-control leads to academic stress. These findings highlight the fact that university-level interventions encourage healthier digital habits and stronger individual control of students. Also, it emphasizes the need for parents and educators to promote effective study habits and self-regulation, as excessive social media use limits students’ available study time.
Background Sleep problems are common among university students due to academic stress, lifestyle factors, and psychological distress and may adversely affect physical and mental health, academic performance, and social functioning. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have increasingly been used as a non-pharmacological approach to improve sleep health; however, previous findings remain inconsistent, and evidence specifically addressing sleep quality in university students remains limited. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effects of MBIs on sleep quality in university students and explore factors that may account for variations in intervention effects. Methods We searched seven databases—PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, Embase, and ScienceDirect—from inception to June 26, 2026. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating MBIs for sleep quality in university students were included. Two reviewers independently conducted study selection, data extraction, and risk-of-bias assessment using the RoB 2 tool. Meta-analysis was conducted in Stata 17.0 using a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses, publication bias assessment, and GRADE assessment were also performed. Results Ten RCTs involving 638 university students were included, with 335 participants in the intervention groups and 303 in the control groups. MBIs significantly improved sleep quality [SMD = −0.97, 95% CI (−1.43, −0.51), p < 0.001], although substantial heterogeneity was observed ( I 2 = 85.1%). Subgroup analyses revealed statistically significant between-group differences with respect to sleep-outcome measurement instrument ( p = 0.001), intervention type ( p = 0.009), and session duration ( p = 0.030), indicating that these variables may partially account for the observed heterogeneity. Sensitivity analyses supported the robustness of the pooled results. Egger’s test revealed no evidence of significant publication bias ( p = 0.270). The certainty of the evidence was rated as low according to the GRADE framework. Conclusion MBIs may improve sleep quality in university students. However, given the substantial heterogeneity and low certainty of evidence, further high-quality RCTs are needed to confirm these findings. Aim and background: Sleep is a biological necessity essential for physical and mental well-being, yet many young adults, particularly college students, experience sleep disruptions due to major life changes and poor sleep hygiene. This study aimed to identify the determinants of insomnia among undergraduate female students in a rural area of Haryana.Materials and methods: A mixed-method study was conducted between May 2024 and May 2025 involving 340 undergraduate female students.Quantitative data were collected using a semi-structured socio-demographic questionnaire and the insomnia severity index (ISI).Qualitative insights were gathered through in-depth interviews (IDI) with 15 students identified with clinically significant insomnia.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 26, with significance set at p < 0.05.Results: The prevalence of clinically significant insomnia in the cohort was 5.6% (n = 19).Quantitative analysis revealed that the participant's state of origin was the only statistically significant socio-demographic determinant (p = 0.031).Students from states other than Haryana reported a significantly higher insomnia prevalence (12.5%) compared to those from Haryana (4.2%).Factors such as age, socio-economic status, and type of occupancy showed no significant correlation.Qualitative themes highlighted academic performance, overuse of electronic devices, social environment, and psycho-social stress as primary triggers. Conclusion: While the prevalence of insomnia is relatively low, it is significantly driven by academic transitions, excessive screen time, and communal living challenges.A notable awareness-action gap exists, as students recognize the importance of sleep but prefer self-management or mindfulness over professional clinical help.
Final-year engineering students frequently face severe psychological stress driven by demanding capstone projects and rigorous accreditation standards. This research proposes a novel decision-support framework to objectively evaluate, categorize, and systematically manage academic stress among engineering undergraduates. By integrating automated non-parametric machine learning with a multi-criteria network decision model, the research bridges diagnostic psychological profiling and strategic institutional intervention. Data were gathered from six hundred eleven final-year students across four engineering departments using a validated psychometric questionnaire. The automated classification engine utilizes a nearest-neighbor algorithm based on spatial Euclidean proximity to categorize individual distress severity into depression, anxiety, and stress levels without relying on rigid parametric assumptions. Subsequently, a strategic situational assessment and a multi-perspective personal performance framework were established to translate abstract psychological findings into measurable indicators. Clinical experts and academic domain specialists evaluated these indicators using an analytical network process, incorporating complex interdependencies and feedback loops to compute steady-state priority weights. Empirical results revealed that over ninety percent of respondents experienced at least moderate psychological distress. Crucially, the mathematical prioritization demonstrated that the financial perspective holds the paramount priority weight, followed by internal cognitive resilience, continuous knowledge acquisition, and external social relationships. This proves that financial stability serves as a foundational prerequisite for academic recovery and intellectual execution. The primary contribution of this research lies in converting static psychometric evaluations into a dynamic, clinically validated decision-support tool. Higher education institutions and academic counselors can implement this prioritized framework to allocate institutional resources effectively, design targeted financial relief initiatives, and optimize student well-being alongside academic excellence.
Academic expectations can be an important part of adolescent development, but students may experience these expectations as pressure. This study examined perceived parental pressure and academic stress among school students aged 16-18 years in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, and assessed the association between the two variables. A quantitative, descriptive-correlational, cross-sectional design was used. Convenience sampling yielded 61 consenting students. Data were collected through an online structured questionnaire containing a 20-item perceived parental-pressure measure and a 30-item academic-stress measure. Descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha, and Pearson's product-moment correlation were used. The mean perceived parental-pressure score was 52.31 (SD = 17.07), and the mean academic-stress score was 85.62 (SD = 22.59). Internal consistency was high in this sample (α = .95 and .96, respectively). Perceived parental pressure was positively associated with academic stress, r = .38, p = .003, 95% CI [.14, .57]. Students reporting greater perceived parental pressure tended to report greater academic stress. Because the study was cross-sectional and used a convenience sample, the findings do not establish causation and should not be generalised to all adolescents. The results highlight the value of realistic academic expectations, supportive family communication, and accessible school-based student support.
Using Control-Value Theory (CVT) as an interpretive framework, this study examined the statistical associations of perceived academic stress, emotion regulation, and academic buoyancy with psychological well-being among Saudi EFL learners. Rather than testing the appraisal-emotion structure of CVT, the study estimated the relationships among these learner constructs within a single partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) model and used CVT to inform their theoretical interpretation. Data were collected from 250 intermediate-level EFL learners enrolled in institutionally based English programs in Saudi Arabia using the Perception of Academic Stress Scale (PASS), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, an adapted Academic Buoyancy Scale, and an adapted Psychological Well-Being Scale. SmartPLS 4 was used to evaluate the measurement and structural models. The measurement results indicated acceptable internal consistency and convergent validity, with Cronbach’s alpha values ranging from 0.858 to 0.943 and AVE values exceeding 0.50. The specified model accounted for 31.2% of the observed variance in psychological well-being. Emotion regulation yielded the largest observed standardized coefficient in its association with psychological well-being (β = 0.316, p < .001), followed descriptively by perceived academic stress (β = 0.193, p = .014) and academic buoyancy (β = 0.145, p = .026). Because the differences among these coefficients were not tested directly, their ordering is descriptive and cannot be taken as evidence of statistically significant differences in association magnitude. Moreover, because perceived control, task value, and achievement emotions were not directly operationalized, the observed associations do not constitute evidence for the appraisal-emotion processes specified by CVT. Likewise, the positive stress-well-being coefficient provides no basis for concluding that learners made challenge appraisals, experienced eustress, or benefited from academic stress. The observed relationships provide a basis for future longitudinal and intervention studies examining whether changes in these constructs are accompanied by subsequent changes in learner well-being.
Academic pressure experienced by early adult university students frequently triggers negative emotional responses such as anxiety and stress, which can impair learning concentration. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of listening to Rhythm and Blues (R&B) music in enhancing emotion regulation among students of Politeknik Negeri Pontianak when facing academic pressure. A quantitative experimental approach with a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design was employed. The subjects consisted of 18 students from the Automotive Business Administration Study Program, selected through purposive sampling criteria: possessing a moderate level of emotion regulation and an affinity for R&B music. Data were collected using an Emotion Regulation Scale constructed based on emotion monitoring, emotion evaluating, and emotion modification aspects, exhibiting a high Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.948. The intervention spanned seven sessions, incorporating R&B playlist listening, psychoeducation, short film screening and self-reflection. Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample t-Test. The results revealed an increase in the mean emotion regulation score from 146.22 (pre-test) to 149.17 (post-test) with t = -3.360 and a significance value of p = 0.004 (p < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that listening to Rhythm and Blues (R&B) music is effective in enhancing emotion regulation among students at Politeknik Negeri Pontianak facing academic pressure.
The period of university studies is associated with numerous stressors that can negatively affect the psychological functioning of young adults. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between perceived stress levels, preferred coping strategies, and psychological resilience. The analysis focused on resilience as a potential moderator of the relationship between coping strategies and stress intensity. The study included 607 Polish students. A significant part of the group was medical students (61.72%). The study employed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), the Coping Inventory (Mini-COPE), the Resilience Scale (SPP-25), and used an author-developed questionnaire to collect sociodemographic information. The respondents exhibited moderate stress intensity (M = 22.54; SD = 7.04) and a moderately high level of general resilience (M = 59.39; SD = 15.37). Among coping strategies, acceptance (M = 1.94) and active coping (M = 1.85) were chosen most frequently, while turning to religion and helplessness were chosen least frequently. Analysis of personal resources showed the highest scores in openness to experience and sense of humor. Interaction effects rarely reached statistical significance. The study group showed a profile of students who were stressed but had functional coping resources. The moderation analysis results indicate the complex nature of the relationships among the variables studied—although psychological resilience is a key resource, its role as a moderator of the relationship between coping strategies and stress is not universal and emerges only in specific areas of functioning. The data obtained suggest that psychological interventions should focus on strengthening existing resources (such as active coping) and developing resilience, which may serve as a buffer against the negative effects of academic stress.
Academic stress is a major risk factor for mental health problems among college students. Existing online counseling systems often face three limitations: limited user trust in virtual interactions, insufficient adaptation to academic-stress scenarios, and inconsistent professional quality in single-agent counseling. To address these issues, we developed DHCBT, a digital human counseling system based on a hierarchical CBT multi-agent framework. Coordinated by a meta-agent and specialized expert agents, the framework structures counseling into two stages: establishment of an initial intervention framework and execution of the CBT core process. We evaluated the framework through benchmark testing on CBT-BENCH Level II, response-quality assessment on academic-stress counseling cases, and a controlled user study comparing DHCBT with a text-based chatbot. In benchmark testing, the framework showed strong performance on cognitive distortion and core-belief understanding tasks. In counseling-response evaluation, it outperformed baseline models in safety, adherence to CBT process, problem comprehension, and empathy. In the user study, DHCBT was associated with lower cognitive load and higher social presence, usability, and intention to continue use than the text-based control. These findings provide preliminary evidence that combining a digital human counseling interface with a CBT multi-agent framework is feasible for supporting college students with mild-to-moderate academic stress.
Background This study examined the predictive relationship between metacognitive thinking, academic self-regulation sub-dimensions, and academic burnout among undergraduate students in Jordan. Methods Using a convenience sample of 631 students, three validated scales were administered: the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory, the Academic Self-Regulation Inventory, and the Academic Burnout Inventory. Two-way ANOVA, correlation analyses, and multiple stepwise linear regression were employed to analyze the data. Results Two-way ANOVA revealed no statistically significant differences in metacognitive thinking, self-regulation, or academic burnout based on gender. However, significant differences were identified based on the year of study; upperclassmen (third- and fourth-year students) demonstrated significantly higher levels of metacognitive thinking and self-regulation, whereas first-year students reported the highest levels of academic burnout. Correlation analyses revealed significant inverse relationships between metacognitive thinking, self-regulation, and academic burnout. Multiple stepwise linear regression indicated that self-regulation dimensions—specifically decision-making, goal setting, and learning from mistakes—along with metacognitive thinking, significantly predicted academic burnout, with decision-making emerging as the strongest individual predictor. Conclusion Institutional support should focus on embedding targeted interventions that enhance self-regulatory capacities and decision-making skills to mitigate academic stress and burnout.
Personalized psychological counseling is essential for tailoring therapeutic strategies to individual needs. However, existing methods often rely on static approaches that fail to dynamically adapt responses based on emotional and contextual changes in client conversations. The primary objective is to improve personalized psychological counseling for college students experiencing academic stress, social adjustment challenges, and emotional well-being concerns. The proposed model is termed the Grizzly Bear Fat-Increase Optimization–Driven Encoder–Decoder Long Short-Term Memory (GBFI–EDLSTM) architecture to dynamically adjust counseling strategies. The model utilizes an Encoder–Decoder LSTM to process and generate personalized counseling responses. GBFI fine-tunes these responses by analyzing emotional cues, ensuring that the generated strategies are tailored to the client’s evolving needs within a college academic and social environment. The model is trained on a curated dataset consisting of mental health conversation dialogues collected from college students and university counseling sessions, which contain text-based interactions between student clients and professional counselors. Preprocessing steps such as tokenization, stop-word removal, lemmatization, and punctuation removal to standardize the input. BERT embeddings are used for feature extraction, enabling the model to capture meaningful semantic relationships. These features assist the model in generating contextually appropriate and emotionally relevant responses. The model is implemented using Python, with Tensorflow and Keras for DL, and NLTK and spaCy for text preprocessing. The model accuracy (0.936), precision (0.93), recall (0.92), and F1-score (0.92), along with a PHQ-9 reduction (4.3) and dropout rate (8.8%). It outperforms traditional models in terms of emotional engagement and therapeutic progress prediction.
