A Comparative Study of VR Therapy and Traditional Methods for Stress Management

Anshika Verma; Mrs. Divya singh International Journal of Research Publication and Reviews, 2026 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23830848

Stress arising from academic, professional and financial demands is common among students and young professionals, and the coping methods within easiest reach, such as listening to music, do not always suffice. This paper presents a survey-driven design for a virtual reality (VR) gadget that combines selectable immersive natural environments, environment-matched sound therapy and heart-rate biofeedback for short relaxation sessions. An online questionnaire completed by 24 respondents, mostly college students, supplies the user requirements. Among those who answer the relevant items, 65.2% report daily stress, 73.9% name academic or job pressure as the main cause, and 47.8% state that a busy schedule prevents regular yoga or meditation. Music is the most common coping method (63.6%). Asked about a 10–15 minute VR relaxation session described as free of side effects, 83.3% answer “yes, definitely” and 8.3% answer “maybe” if the price is under Rs. 5000. The findings yield design requirements, a system architecture, a session workflow and a protocol for comparing the gadget with guided breathing, meditation and relaxing music. That comparison is planned, not yet carried out: the prototype has not been tested with users, and the paper makes no claim of clinical effectiveness.

Weekly practice frequency of individual yoga components and subjective wellbeing in Hungarian yoga practitioners: a nationwide cross-sectional online survey

Gusztáv József Tornóczky; Sunil Singh Yadav; Henriett Nagy; İsmail Ilbak; Vera Klier; Dorottya Bosnyak; … Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1941678 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1941678

Background Yoga is a multidimensional mind–body practice, yet little is known about whether the weekly practice frequency of its individual components is differentially associated with subjective wellbeing (SWB). This study examined the associations between the weekly practice frequency of asana, pranayama, relaxation, and meditation and SWB among Hungarian yoga practitioners. Methods A cross-sectional online survey based on convenience snowball sampling was conducted in April–May 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, among 379 adult yoga practitioners (44.31 ± 10.12 years). SWB was assessed using the World Health Organization-Five Wellbeing Index (WHO-5). Associations between participant characteristics and SWB were examined using one-way ANOVA and Pearson’s correlations. Separate ANCOVA models examined associations between the weekly practice frequency of each yoga component and SWB after adjustment for place of residence, other physical exercise, yoga practice duration, and yoga expertise (Holm–Bonferroni corrected). Independent associations were examined using multiple linear regression, with a dummy-coded sensitivity analysis. Results Place of residence, yoga expertise, other physical exercise, and, weakly, yoga practice duration were associated with SWB. After adjustment, all four yoga components remained significantly associated with higher SWB (corrected p ≤ 0.029), with medium effect sizes for asana (ηp 2 = 0.070) and meditation (ηp 2 = 0.061) and small effect sizes for pranayama (ηp 2 = 0.050) and relaxation (ηp 2 = 0.024). Daily practice was consistently associated with the highest SWB. The regression model explained only 12.9% of the variance in SWB (Cohen’s f 2 = 0.15), and only asana ( B = 0.69, 95% CI [0.22, 1.17]) and meditation frequency ( B = 0.61, 95% CI [0.21, 1.00]) remained independently associated with SWB, as supported by the sensitivity analysis. Conclusion In this predominantly female, highly educated convenience sample, more frequent weekly practice of all four yoga components was associated with higher SWB. However, after accounting for participant characteristics, yoga experience, and the overlap among components, only asana and meditation frequency remained independently associated with SWB. These associations were small, and most of the variance in SWB remained unexplained. Given the cross-sectional design, causal conclusions cannot be drawn and generalization should be cautious; longitudinal and intervention studies of individual yoga components are needed.

Comparative EEG analysis of Sutra and Tantra meditations: insights into meditative states and long-term traits

J. A. Boytsova; Ngawang Norbu; Lodoe Sangpo; Elena Kokurina; Chhoktan Lama; Tanzin Chhonden; … Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1846053 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1846053

Introduction The Tibetan Buddhist tradition distinguishes between two broad categories of meditation: Sutra and Tantra, which differ in the methods and mental faculties they employ. The main neurophysiological studies of Tibetan Buddhist meditation have been conducted mostly on Sutra practices; while Tantric meditation remains less studied. Methods This publication presents a dual comparative study, using both between-groups and within-subjects design, of the neurophysiological (EEG) correlates characterizing Sutra and Tantra meditative practices, examining both the meditative states and the meditative traits. The study was carried out within the natural environment of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in India, maintaining the socio-cultural context. Two groups of long-term practitioners (Buddhist monks of Gelug lineage), one experienced in the Tantra tradition (T-group, n = 21) and the other in the Sutra tradition (S-group, n = 20) participated in the study. Results A between-group cluster permutation test revealed that the groups differed in EEG alpha power during meditation, as well as in baseline resting conditions before and after meditation. Specifically, T-group demonstrated consistently lower alpha power compared to the S-group, regardless of the conditions. Thus, the observed differences are stable characteristics of the groups. The within-subjects analysis demonstrated that the conditions (meditation, and baseline resting states before and after meditation) differed only in the T-group: during meditation, an increase in individual alpha peak frequency (iAPF) was observed in the occipital leads, followed by a decrease in iAPF after meditation. Discussion We suggest that reported between-group differences represent enduring meditative traits developed through years of training in meditative techniques in the Sutra and Tantra traditions. Nevertheless, we cannot entirely exclude the possibility that these variations may also stem from certain cohort-specific characteristics unrelated to meditation. An examination of individual power spectra revealed that the absence of significant differences in EEG spectral power between conditions can be primarily attributed to the inter-individual variability in both groups. This variability, in turn, may stem from extensive expertise of highly experienced practitioners, who over years of training, develop individualized cognitive strategies for maintaining the meditative state. Our future research will focus on a more detailed quantitative analysis of inter-individual variability during meditations and on identifying additional between-group differences among practitioners in different traditions.

Mindfulness meditation does not make people more present-biased

Josep Gisbert; Daniel Navarro‐Martinez; Andrés Martín-Asuero; Jordi Quoidbach Scientific Reports, 2026, Vol. 16, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-026-64198-0

One essential aspect of mindfulness practice is to help people focus on the present moment. Although this present-focused attention has been linked to several positive outcomes, it also raises the possibility that mindfulness could increase present bias, with potentially negative consequences for decision-making. Across three laboratory studies and one longitudinal field study, we examined whether mindfulness meditation affects intertemporal choice. In the laboratory studies, participants completed brief guided mindfulness exercises before making economic decisions involving trade-offs between smaller immediate rewards and larger delayed rewards. In our field study, participants completed an eight-week mindfulness course offered by an established mindfulness institute, and they made intertemporal choices before and after their training. Across all four studies, mindfulness did not increase present bias or meaningfully alter intertemporal decisions.

No added benefit of VR and neurofeedback-enhanced VR for trait mindfulness in long-term mindfulness training

Yuqin Liu; Weitao Zhang; Yilin Wang; Chen Wu; Sha Zhao; Gang Pan; … Computers in Human Behavior Reports, 2026, Vol. 24, pp. 101376 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chbr.2026.101376

Immersive virtual reality (VR) and neurofeedback (NF) are increasingly promoted to enhance mindfulness meditation, yet it remains unknown whether these externally engaging technologies confer lasting benefits for trait mindfulness over sustained practice. This longitudinal randomized controlled trial compared three conditions over a 4-week program (eight sessions) with a three-month follow-up: screen-based audio-guided mindfulness (Non-VR), mindfulness in an immersive VR environment (VR), and mindfulness in VR with real-time EEG neurofeedback (VR-NF). Ninety-four meditation-naïve participants completed the study. Trait mindfulness (Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, FFMQ) was assessed at six time points, EEG signal was recorded during all sessions, and subjective presence (Igroup Presence Questionnaire, IPQ) in VR was measured. Linear mixed models and Bayesian analysis revealed comparable FFMQ increases across all three groups, indicating that VR and VR-NF did not confer added behavioral benefit for trait mindfulness development. Higher IPQ presence scores showed a modest negative correlation with long-term FFMQ gains at three-month follow-up. Exploratory EEG analyses described a numerically steeper theta trajectory in the Non-VR group relative to the VR and VR-NF groups, whereas alpha trajectories were comparable across groups. However, because the two EEG systems were not equivalent across conditions and recordings were obtained from frontopolar sites, these patterns are descriptive only and cannot be interpreted as evidence of group differences. Taken together, these findings suggest that VR and VR-NF did not confer added benefit for trait mindfulness in long-term mindfulness training.

Facilitating Mindfulness Training with Ultrasonic Neuromodulation

Brian Lord; Erica N Lord; Jessica Schachtner; Laura Beaman; Shinzen Young; John J.B. Allen; … Mindfulness, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1007/s12671-026-02994-5

This randomized trial tested whether suppressive transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) targeting the posterior cingulate cortex during mindfulness training altered equanimity and resting-state default mode-central executive network (DMN-CEN) connectivity in novice meditators. Thirty meditation-naive adults were randomized to active or sham tFUS; 24 completed a 2-week Body Focus program (active n = 16; sham n = 8), including 14 daily lessons and four tFUS-meditation sessions. Resting-state fMRI scans were acquired and the Equanimity Scale-16 (ES-16) was administered before and after the meditation training intervention. Voluntary meditation practice time was measured during four tFUS-meditation sessions during training. DMN-CEN connectivity showed an interaction (β = −0.118, 95% CI [−0.186, −0.050], p = 0.002), reflecting decreased connectivity in Active and a nonsignificant increase in Sham. Greater DMN-CEN decreases were associated with greater ES-16 Acceptance increases across participants (β = −22.93, p = 0.031). The estimated relation between connectivity change and voluntary practice duration differed in direction by condition, but the interaction was not significant (β = −51.69, p = 0.061). PCC-targeted tFUS combined with mindfulness-based training was associated with resting-state connectivity differences but not differential change in the ES-16 total score. Replication in a larger, fully blinded trial is needed. The preregistration specified a target of 80 participants with 1:1 allocation ( https://osf.io/pe6d4/ ). Resource-related changes made before outcome examination resulted in 30 randomized participants, of whom 24 completed. Because the connectivity hypothesis was underspecified, the connectivity analyses and non-preregistered ES-16 subscale analyses were treated as exploratory.

Sixty years of linguistic change in the poetry of a Zen practitioner: a longitudinal case study of Gary Snyder

Gary Snyder

Ping Guo; Wei Fan Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1879502

Can decades of Zen meditation leave measurable traces in the practitioner’s natural language? Long-term contemplative practice is widely understood to reshape emotion regulation, self-referential processing, and perceptual engagement, yet empirical research on these transformations has been fundamentally constrained by two limitations: an observation window of weeks to months at most, and an almost exclusive reliance on self-report and neuroimaging measures that cannot reach the automated, prereflective dimensions of psychological life most directly reshaped by sustained practice. This study applies computational quantitative content analysis to nine major poetry collections by the American Zen practitioner-poet Gary Snyder, spanning six decades (1959-2015), to test three directional hypotheses derived from core Zen concepts: affective settling ( ānxīn , H1), self-referential attenuation ( anātman , H2), and perceptual despecification ( ānimitta , H3). Each hypothesis is held against a rival explanation as a falsification reference. The results reveal career-long changes across three analytical domains: negative-emotion vocabulary declines monotonically while positive and neutral categories show no statistically detectable trend; first-person pronouns, somatic vocabulary, grammatical agency, and cognitive certainty converge in decline across four distinct linguistic layers; embodied sensory specificity thins systematically while vocabulary drifts toward greater abstraction. Changepoint detection offers descriptive corroboration of the periodization. A comparison with a contemporaneous non-practicing poet (Wendell Berry) is descriptive in evidential status: the affective and self-referential trends are significant in Snyder but not in Berry, direct tests of the between-poet differences do not yield differences that are robust across interval-construction methods, and sensory thinning appears in both poets and may reflect processes shared across long poetic careers. These findings constitute what is, to our knowledge, the longest longitudinal linguistic record of a verified long-term Zen practitioner–documenting career-long changes that are consistent with, though not attributable to, sustained practice–and demonstrate the distinctive methodological value of naturally produced creative texts as a comparatively non-reactive observational window for studying long-term contemplative transformation.
