Linking Instructional Leadership Behaviour to Job Performance of Lecturers at Public Universities

Kofi Nkonkonya Mpuangnan; Evans Ennin Dickson; Samantha Govender Philip Roth Studies, 2026 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23834312

ABSTRACT. The relationship between instructional leadership behaviours and lecturers’ job performance is important in higher education. Understanding this relationship can help academic leaders support lecturers and improve teaching, research, and academic development. Therefore, this study determines how instructional leadership behaviour of heads of departments (HoDs) influences lecturers’ job performance at the major public universities in Kumasi, Ghana. A cross-sectional survey design was employed to collect data from lecturers in public universities at a single point in time. The sample includes public university lecturers. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 155 lecturers to provide quantitative data. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed with both descriptive and inferential statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, along with the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. The findings indicate that HoDs demonstrate active involvement in setting institutional direction, monitoring instruction, and supporting staff development. However, the findings reveal insufficient mentorship to support lecturers’ professional learning and performance. This lack of mentorship could limit opportunities for developing leadership potential among teachers and supporting their career growth. Lecturers displayed effectiveness in their teaching practices. The statistical results confirmed a significant effect of instructional leadership behaviours on lecture delivery (F(4,98) = 20.382, p < 0.01). It was recommended that HoDs should communicate departmental goals clearly and ensure that lecturers understand their teaching, assessment, research, and administrative responsibilities. Additionally, the strong positive correlation between the communication of institutional objectives and lecturer effectiveness highlights the need for university goals, teaching expectations, and performance standards to be communicated clearly across departments.

Modelling confidence, value and motivation as predictors of self-reported mathematics achievement among students in a selected school

Ebenezer Owusu; Yarhands Dissou Arthur; Gideon Mensah Banson; John Ackon Discover Education, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 1, pp. 1279 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44217-026-02367-z

Abstract Despite decades of effort to improve mathematical outcomes, studies examining the integrated roles of affective dimensions such as confidence, perceived value, and motivation in relation to mathematics achievement among Senior High School students in Ghana remain relatively limited. In this study, confidence was operationalised through items reflecting students’ domain-specific mathematics self-efficacy beliefs. This study examines the structural associations of confidence, perceived value, and motivation with self-reported mathematics achievement among final-year students in a selected Senior High School in the Atwima Nwabiagya North Municipal Assembly of Ghana. A quantitative descriptive correlational design was employed, and data were collected from 296 students using a structured questionnaire. Self-reported mathematics achievement was measured using students’ responses to items concerning their perceived achievement in mathematics, rather than standardised test scores or school achievement records. The hypothesised structural relationships among confidence, perceived value, motivation, and self-reported mathematics achievement were examined using structural equation modelling (SEM). Within the participating school, the results showed that confidence, perceived value, and motivation were each positively and significantly associated with self-reported mathematics achievement, with confidence having the largest standardised coefficient, followed by motivation and value. Given these findings, instructional practices that support students’ confidence may be considered in mathematics teaching. Likewise, opportunities to connect mathematics with real-world applications may help students recognise its value, while supportive learning environments may provide conditions conducive to sustained engagement with mathematics learning.

Digital Screen Addiction and Psychological Well-Being among Ghanaian Basic School Children: A School Management Perspective

Oheneba Kofi Nti; Racheal Amoah; Emmanuel Duncan British Journal of Education Learning and Development Psychology, 2026, Vol. 9, Issue 2, pp. 93 https://doi.org/10.52589/bjeldp-pd7dweva

The digital revolution has fundamentally transformed childhood experience across the globe. In Ghana, rapid mobile internet penetration, the proliferation of low-cost smartphones, and COVID-19-induced remote learning have dramatically intensified basic school children's exposure to digital screens. Emerging evidence links digital screen addiction (DSA) to significant impairments in children's psychological well-being encompassing emotional, cognitive, social, and behavioural dimensions. Yet, school management responses in Ghanaian basic schools remain underdeveloped and largely uncoordinated. This narrative literature review synthesizes global and sub-Saharan African evidence on digital screen addiction and its psychological well-being consequences among basic school children (ages 5–15), critically examines existing school management frameworks, and proposes a School-Based Digital Wellness Management Framework (SBDWMF) for Ghanaian basic schools. A narrative synthesis approach was employed. Literature was sourced from PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, PsycINFO, African Journals Online (AJOL), and grey literature from the WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF, Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Health Service (GHS), and the Ministry of Education. Peer-reviewed empirical studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and policy documents published from 2010 to 2024 were included, with a total of 72 sources forming the evidence base. DSA is prevalent among basic school-age children globally, with pooled prevalence estimates ranging from 19% to 38% depending on measurement tools and contexts. Excessive screen exposure is consistently associated with psychological distress, anxiety, depression, attentional difficulties, emotional dysregulation, impaired self-esteem, peer-relationship deficits, and poor academic well-being. In Ghana, contextual risk amplifiers, including parental digital literacy gaps, absent school mental health services, post-COVID normalization of extended screen use, and fragmented policy, compound the psychological burden. School management frameworks in Ghanaian basic schools are largely inadequate to address DSA, with critical deficits in policy, counselling capacity, teacher training, and parental engagement. DSA poses a mounting psychological well-being challenge for Ghanaian basic school children, demanding an urgent, evidence-informed school management response. The proposed six-pillar SBDWMF offers a practical governance architecture for Ghanaian basic school heads, district education officers, and national policymakers to address DSA comprehensively within the school setting.

Formative assessment practices and perceived students’ mathematical achievement in senior high schools: the mediating role of cognitive activation-oriented instruction

Anatu Buffiama Issah; Joseph Frank Gordon; Benjamin Obeng Adu Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11, pp. 1953835 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1953835

Mathematics achievement remains a major concern in Ghanaian senior high schools despite the increasing emphasis on effective classroom assessment and instructional quality. This study examined the relationship between formative assessment practices and perceived students’ mathematical achievement, while investigating the mediating role of cognitive activation-oriented instruction. The study adopted a positivist paradigm with a quantitative cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected from 320 Senior High School students selected through a multistage sampling procedure from two public senior high schools in Ghana. A structured questionnaire measured formative assessment practices, cognitive activation-oriented instruction, and perceived students’ mathematical achievement. Data were analysed using SPSS version 23 and AMOS version 23. Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modelling were employed to test the measurement and structural models. The findings revealed that formative assessment practices significantly predicted perceived students’ mathematical achievement and were positively associated with cognitive activation-oriented instruction. Cognitive activation-oriented instruction was also positively associated with perceived students’ mathematical achievement and statistically mediated the relationship between formative assessment practices and perceived students’ mathematical achievement. The findings suggest that formative assessment practices and cognitive activation-oriented instruction are positively associated with students’ perceptions of their mathematical achievement.

Patterns of Honey–Mumford learning-style scores and classifications among pre-service teachers in Ghana

Isaac Ntumi; Peter Ofori Atakorah; Philip Asumang; Emmanuel Amihere Cobbinah; Bosco Aboagye Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11, pp. 1907726 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1907726

Understanding the learning preferences of pre-service teachers is important for designing flexible and inclusive teacher education programmes. This study examined Honey and Mumford Learning Styles Questionnaire (LSQ) dimension scores and the resulting highest-scoring and tied maximum-score classifications among Level 100 pre-service teachers in Colleges of Education in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. It also examined whether these classifications were associated with gender, teaching-level specialisation, and programme family. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted. The accessible population comprised approximately 2,800 pre-service teachers across eight Colleges of Education, from which 1,496 respondents were included in the study. Data were collected using the 80-item Honey and Mumford LSQ, which assesses four learning-preference dimensions: Activist, Reflector, Theorist, and Pragmatist. For descriptive classification, the dimension with the highest observed score was identified for each respondent, while respondents with equal maximum scores on two or more dimensions were retained in a separate Tie category. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, chi-square tests, Cramér's V, and multinomial logistic regression. Tied maximum scores were observed for 44.5% of respondents. Among respondents with a unique highest-scoring dimension, Activist was the most frequent classification (28.7%), followed by Theorist (12.0%), Reflector (9.5%), and Pragmatist (5.3%). Highest-scoring classification was significantly associated with gender, χ 2 (4, N = 1,496) = 17.91, p = .001, Cramér's V = .109; teaching level, χ 2 (4, N = 1,496) = 41.76, p < .001, Cramér's V = .167; and programme family, χ 2 (12, N = 1,496) = 178.94, p < .001, Cramér's V = .200. The effect sizes were relatively small. Multinomial regression identified differences in selected outcome contrasts, particularly for teaching level and programme family, although several estimates had wide confidence intervals and should be interpreted cautiously. The findings demonstrate considerable variation in LSQ score patterns and show that a substantial proportion of respondents could not be assigned a unique highest-scoring dimension. These results support cautious use of learning-style classifications as descriptive indicators of reported preferences rather than as fixed learner types. Teacher education programmes should therefore emphasise varied pedagogical experiences incorporating active engagement, reflection, theoretical understanding, and practical application.

Reimagining African leadership models for peace education and epistemically just knowledge systems in higher education

Sulaimon Adewale; Ntokozo Dennis Ndwandwe Discover Education, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44217-026-02234-x

This study examines how Indigenous African leadership philosophies, particularly Ubuntu and participatory governance models, can transform higher education institutions into sites of peace education and epistemic justice. It responds to the enduring marginalisation of Indigenous Knowledge Systems within African universities. A qualitative comparative institutional analysis design, underpinned by document-based research, was adopted. The study analysed 67 institutional documents from universities in Rwanda, South Africa, and Ghana. Rwanda’s post-genocide education reforms served as a critical embedded case. This offered insights into context-driven educational transformation. Eurocentric leadership structures remain deeply embedded across the cases, perpetuating epistemic injustice. Yet pockets of Afrocentric innovation are emerging. For instance, governance restructures in Rwanda incorporate restorative justice principles, gender equity initiatives are evident in South Africa, and curriculum reviews in Ghana propose Indigenous Knowledge Systems integration. Evidence from these institutional documents points to a gradual shift toward locally grounded leadership. Student movements like #RhodesMustFall further reveal how institutional hierarchies are being contested. The study proposes an epistemically just leadership framework, anchored in participatory governance, Ubuntu-informed pedagogy, and restorative policies. By centring Indigenous Knowledge Systems and African philosophical traditions, this research contributes to broader efforts toward epistemic justice, social cohesion, and the transformation of post-colonial institutions. It positions leadership transformation as foundational, not peripheral, to broader decolonisation efforts in African higher education.

Negotiating Kwame Nkrumah’s dilemma and the systemic intersection of academic freedom, decolonisation and knowledge production in Africa

Chika C. Mba Discover Global Society, 2026, Vol. 4, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44282-026-00593-2

Kwame Nkrumah recognised academic freedom as an enabler of knowledge production in Africa. At the same time, he sought to sidestep academic freedom to safeguard the “national interest” of the ex-colony he governed. His approach brought him into direct conflict with the hegemonic forces of “universal knowledge” both locally and internationally. His critics often argue that Nkrumah’s pursuit of decolonisation and Africanisation in Ghana’s higher education is necessarily antithetical to academic freedom. But is decolonisation a threat to academic freedom and, by extension, a drawback to knowledge production in Africa? To address this problem, I unpack the structural layers and negotiate what I call “Kwame Nkrumah’s dilemma”. I do this by deploying the hermeneutic-narrative method, a key approach to doing African philosophy. This methodological orientation undergirds my contextual examination of excerpts from three speeches delivered by Nkrumah and an editorial piece from his party’s newspapers between 1959 and 1964. In line with the hermeneutic approach, I utilise a historical literature review, drawing on secondary sources to examine the evolution of theories/concepts and past events, to demonstrate that Nkrumah’s formidable dilemma persists, as evidenced by the trajectory of African Studies after his departure and the enduring influence of his thought and actions on the discipline. I follow Nkrumah to argue that academic freedom in postcolonial Africa ought to go hand in hand with academic sovereignty and what Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni would call epistemic freedom.

Curriculum expectation and classroom reality in manipulative use by JHS mathematics teachers in Amansie Central Ghana

Godfred Asiedu Mireku Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1951289

Ghana's Junior High School (JHS) mathematics curriculum expects teachers to use concrete manipulatives. In the Amansie Central District, Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) mathematics failure rates exceeded 55% each year from 2022 to 2024; this underachievement provides the context, rather than the object, of the present study. Drawing on a curriculum-enactment perspective, this convergent mixed-methods, cross-sectional study examined JHS teachers' reported use of manipulatives, sources of supply, teaching methods, perceived benefits and challenges, and compared reported use with observed classroom practice. Data were collected through a questionnaire completed by 97 mathematics teachers in 56 public schools, semi-structured interviews with 31 participants, and classroom observations of 16 teachers. Across 13 syllabus topics, between 85.6% and 96.9% of teachers reported using manipulatives, yet only 2 of the 16 observed teachers (12.5%) used them during instruction, a marked discrepancy between reported and enacted practice. Although 67.0% reported using activity methods, observed lessons were predominantly lecture- or discussion-based. Improvisation was the main source of manipulatives (78.4%), and 78.4% of teachers reported never receiving manipulatives from the Ministry of Education/Ghana Education Service. One-sample chi-square goodness-of-fit tests showed that responses to every benefit and challenge statement were unevenly distributed across the agree, disagree, and uncertain options (all p < 0.001); most teachers perceived manipulatives as beneficial. The most frequently endorsed challenges were lack of continuing professional development (71.1%), the cost of improvised materials (66.0%), and non-availability (61.9%). The findings point to the need for resourcing, professional development, and supervision that attend to classroom enactment rather than lesson-note compliance.

A qualitative examination of the mediating void: teacher PCK, classroom management, and mathematical achievement

Lord Ampofo Adusei; Yarhands Dissou Arthur Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1921022

Recent quantitative literature in mathematics education has exposed a critical empirical paradox: neither classroom management nor mastery-oriented instructional practices statistically mediate the relationship between teachers' Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and secondary student achievement. Because quantitative designs rely on standardized numerical surveys, they frequently treat the interactive classroom environment as a black box, leaving the operational mechanisms behind this statistical breakdown completely unexplained. To address this literature gap, this interpretive qualitative multi-case study investigated the lived experiences of secondary school students within the Kumasi Metropolis of Ghana to explore why traditional structural optimization fails to translate into conceptual understanding. Four distinct public Senior High School mathematics classrooms characterized by highly qualified instructors yet uneven student performance were selected as bounded cases. Data collection was thoroughly triangulated over a two-month period using non-participant classroom observations, four student focus group discussions ( n = 32 ), and four semi-structured teacher interviews. Following an inductive and deductive thematic analysis guided by Self-Determination Theory, the findings revealed that students predominantly experience classroom management as a restrictive mechanism of rigid behavioral control rather than an instructional resource. Although strict behavioral strategies successfully secure classroom silence, they create an atmosphere of intense emotional anxiety that thwarts students' basic psychological needs for autonomy and relatedness. This psychological alienation creates a severe instructional barrier where students become passive spectators who engage in superficial compliance and rote copying rather than the cognitive vulnerability required to master complex mathematical tasks. Consequently, high teacher PCK remains pedagogically locked within a teacher-centered framework because the controlling environment actively thwarts the interactive, communicative discourse necessary for internalizing knowledge. This study concludes that classroom management fails as a statistical mediator because it prioritizes structural containment over genuine cognitive engagement. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service restructure professional development to favor autonomy-supportive management frameworks and relational, error-tolerant learning environments.

Machine learning in predicting the effects of personality traits on college students’ grit in Ghana

Anastasia Hansen Discover Education, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44217-026-02243-w

This study examines whether Big Five personality traits are associated with grit among Ghanaian teacher trainees, applying regularisation assisted econometric estimation within a double machine learning framework. Using survey data from 288 students at Jasikan College of Education, three complementary post lasso estimators were applied, namely ordinary least squares with CHS lasso orthogonalised variables, CHS post lasso orthogonalised variables, and PDS selected variables alongside the full regressor set, each employing lasso purely for covariate selection and orthogonalisation within an OLS framework. A cross validated predictive lasso model corroborated these estimates. Across specifications, openness and conscientiousness consistently predicted higher grit, with openness exceeding conscientiousness in effect size, while extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism showed no significant association. These specific findings suggest that personality dimensions relevant to grit may depend on resource constrained teacher training conditions, offering targets for interventions strengthening grit among prospective educators in Ghana.

The referral trajectories for young people with depression in low-resource settings: A qualitative study from Ghana and Zimbabwe

Precious Makiyi; Rufaro Hamish Mushonga; Rebecca Jopling; Raymond Aborigo; Franklin N. Glozah; Kimberley Goldsmith; … PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 10, pp. e0358255 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0358255

Background Unlike in psychiatric disorders such as psychosis where treatment trajectories are well defined, little is known about pathways to care for depression which is increasingly prevalent among young people across the globe. Whilst empirical evidence is slowly becoming available on pathways to care for common mental disorders in the general population in Ghana and Zimbabwe, there is no study that specifically considered treatment pathways for young people. Objectives This study explored trajectories used by young people (15–24 years) to access specialised mental healthcare in order to determine referral pathways for depression in Ghana and Zimbabwe. Methodology This sub-analysis forms part of a larger formative, exploratory, descriptive qualitative study conducted within the Youth in Mind consortium. The study engaged 172 participants including young people, healthcare providers, policymakers, faith-based and traditional healers, lay health workers, and school staff across Ghana (N = 105) and Zimbabwe (N = 67) who were sampled purposively and using snowball techniques until saturation was reached. Data were analysed using an iterative combination of inductive and deductive coding, followed by thematic analysis. Results Diagnostic and treatment trajectory for young people's access to specialized mental healthcare are complex in both Ghana and Zimbabwe and punctuated with several barriers that culminate in delayed access to treatments. Chief among the barriers facing young people are the catastrophic costs linked with accessing specialized mental health care, lack of autonomy of the youth, long waiting times perpetuated by a limited number of specialists and stigma. Opportunities for optimising access included the use of referral cards, which sped up the referral process, improved communication among referring agents, and establishment of youth corners in some hospitals in Zimbabwe to address concerns of privacy. Conclusion The findings highlight that pathways to specialised mental healthcare in Ghana and Zimbabwe are inherently complex, hindered by intersecting structural, financial, and social barriers. To mitigate these challenges, a multi-faceted strategy is essential. This should include systemic interventions such as task-shifting, the implementation of streamlined referral tools, dedicated youth-friendly services, and concerted efforts to reduce stigma and costs, thereby fostering more equitable and timely access to care.

Karim Abu; Frederick Ngmenkpieo Education Journal, 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 5, pp. 220-232 https://doi.org/10.11648/j.edu.20261505.14

Large class sizes pose significant challenges to the quality of teaching and learning, although previous studies have examined the effects of large class sizes on teaching and learning outcomes, relatively few studies have been given to the pedagogical strategies that can mitigate these challenges and enhance educational quality. This study therefore investigated the effects of large class sizes on the quality of teaching and learning and explored pedagogical strategies that can be employed to improve instructional effectiveness in such contexts. Two research questions were formulated to guide the study:(1) What are the challenges faced by teachers in handling large class sizes and their effects? (2) What pedagogies could be employed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in large classes? A qualitative research method was employed, and a purposive sampling approach was used to arrive at 38 respondents. Primary data were gathered through focus group discussions and personal interviews. The findings highlighted significant issues faced by teachers, such as difficulties in providing individualised attention, proper assessments, several assignments, timely feedback, and good classroom control and management. These challenges hinder academic progress and contribute to poor student performance. To address these issues and enhance the quality of teaching and learning, the findings further revealed several strategies, including peer teaching and marking, group studies, collaborative teaching, field trips, and the use of projectors. The study also emphasises the importance of professional development training programs for in-service teachers to improve their teaching methodologies and confidence in managing large classes. The study concludes that these methods reduce teacher workload and improve the overall learning experience. The study recommends that the Ghana Education Service should encourage teachers to employ these teaching strategies in large classes to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

Introduction Workplace mathematics is often embedded in occupational processes, tools, materials, and artifacts rather than expressed through formal mathematical procedures, creating challenges for identifying and representing mathematics in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). This study examined mathematical affordances identifiable in welding and fabrication practices in Ghana and organized them into an analytical framework of vocational mathematical affordances. Methods An interpretive and exploratory qualitative design was employed. Sixty-one welding and fabrication activities were purposively documented across 11 commercial workshops using photographic records, structured observations, and descriptive activity records. Qualitative content analysis involved identifying mathematical affordances, open coding, category development, and framework construction. Four researchers independently coded the activities following calibration, yielding Krippendorff's α = 0.87. Results The analysis identified five interconnected domains: measurement and quantification, geometric reasoning, spatial reasoning and visualization, design and pattern formation, and structural and applied mathematics. Measurement and geometric reasoning were coded across the widest range of activities, whereas the other domains were coded within more specific subsets of the purposively selected corpus. Discussion The resulting Analytical Framework of Vocational Mathematical Affordances represents researcher-identified mathematical relationships in documented workplace processes and artifacts rather than demonstrated individual worker competence. The framework provides a workplacegrounded basis for further research on how vocational mathematical affordances might be recontextualized within TVET curriculum, teaching, and assessment.

Teacher educators' perceptions and experiences of universal design for learning in Ghanaian teacher education: understanding, preparedness and perceived institutional support

William Nketsia; Maxwell Peprah Opoku; Michael Amponteng; Ruth Quaye Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1936790

Introduction Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has been widely promoted as a framework for supporting inclusive education by addressing learner diversity through flexible curriculum design, instructional practices, and assessment approaches. In 2015, Ghana adopted UDL in its policy on inclusive education to address the diverse educational needs of all children. Despite this policy focus, most research has centered on classroom teachers' implementation of UDL, with limited attention to how teacher educators understand UDL and perceive their preparedness to implement it. Method To address these gaps in the literature, this study investigated teacher educators' perceptions and experiences of UDL, differences across demographic and professional characteristics, relationships among UDL understanding, preparedness, and institutional support, and the predictors of preparedness. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted with 156 teacher educators from three public colleges of education. Colleges were selected via convenience sampling across three regions in Ghana. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way multivariate analysis of variance, Pearson product -moment correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results The participants demonstrated moderately positive levels of UDL understanding, preparedness, and perceived institutional support. Significant differences were identified across selected demographic and professional characteristics, including age, subject specialization, department, teaching level, teaching experience, and prior introduction to UDL. Understanding, preparedness, and institutional support were positively associated. Importantly, both general understanding and perceived institutional support significantly predicted preparedness, with institutional support emerging as the stronger predictor. Conclusion The findings suggest that strengthening UDL implementation requires attention to both teacher educators' individual capacity and the institutional conditions that enable practice. Sustained, practice-oriented professional learning, leadership support, collaborative opportunities, and explicit integration of UDL into institutional teaching and learning practices are therefore recommended to strengthen inclusive teacher preparation in Ghana.

Persistent assessment inequities in linguistically and culturally diverse classrooms necessitate contextually grounded frameworks that advance both academic excellence and educational justice. The study developed, implemented, and evaluated a culturally responsive, equity-driven, and differentiated pedagogical-assessment framework for STEM learning in multilingual and socioeconomically diverse classrooms in Ghana. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design integrated qualitative data (interviews, observations, focus groups) with quantitative measures (pre-post-tests, subscale gains, ANCOVA, and Bayesian analyses). The study involved 210 participants 24 STEM teachers, 6 headteachers, and 180 Primary 4-6 pupils from six public basic schools in Ghana. Quantitative findings revealed statistically significant learning gains across schools and domains. Mean post-test scores increased by 13.96 points (29.12%), with a large overall effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.68; Hedges’ g = 1.89; η ² = 0.79; p < 0.001), indicating strong practical and educational significance. Subscale analyses showed consistent and convergent gains across all framework dimensions, including conceptual mastery (d = 1.72), application of skills (d = 1.67), inclusive strategy use (d = 1.62), opportunity-to-learn (d = 1.59), tiered instruction (d = 1.66), flexible grouping (d = 1.64), linguistic alignment (d = 1.70), and cultural asset integration ( d = 1.69), all demonstrating large effects (d > 1.5). ANCOVA results confirmed significant effects of the intervention across all domains while controlling for pre-test performance, including inquiry-based STEM practices (F = 26.03, p < .001, η²ₚ = 0.10), integrated STEM tasks (F = 19.38, p < .001, η²ₚ = .077), equity-driven instructional practices (η²ₚ = 0.05–0.07), differentiated pedagogical assessment (η²ₚ = 0.04–0.05), and culturally responsive assessment practices (η²ₚ = 0.05–0.06). The pre-test covariate remained significant ( F = 88.21, p < .001, η² = 0.328), indicating the importance of baseline achievement while confirming robust intervention effects Bayesian analyses indicated strong evidential support (posterior probabilities > 0.98; Bayes Factors = 28.1–36.4). Qualitative findings corroborated these results, highlighting increased teacher capacity for culturally relevant task design and improved student engagement and identity affirmation. The study offers empirically grounded guidance for decolonizing STEM assessment in multilingual and underserved contexts.

Curriculum gaps in pre-service teacher preparation for inclusive education in Ghana: teacher educators' perspectives

William Nketsia; Katrina Barker; Danielle Tracey Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1948328

Background Inclusive education is a global policy priority. Such education requires teacher education programs to provide pre-service teachers with the skills, attitudes, and knowledge required to support diverse students in inclusive classrooms. In Ghana, recent reforms have transformed the initial teacher education requirement for basic schoolteachers from a three-year diploma into a four-year bachelor of education, with inclusive education positioned as an important component of teacher preparation. However, questions remain regarding how effectively the reformed curriculum prepares pre-service teachers to implement inclusive practices in classroom settings. Methods This study explores teacher educators' perspectives on Ghana's reformed initial teacher education curriculum and its role in preparing pre-service teachers to offer inclusive education. Following a qualitative research design, data were collected through focus group discussions with 10 teacher educators: eight from colleges of education who are directly involved in training pre-service teachers, and two working in affiliated universities. The data were analyzed using reflective thematic analysis. Results The focus groups revealed that, while the reform has increased the visibility of inclusive education, significant gaps remain in the depth, duration, organization, and practical orientation of the curriculum. Participants reported that inclusive education content is too narrowly focused on disability identification—particularly visible disability categories—with limited attention to broader student diversity, inclusive pedagogy, and classroom-based strategies. The findings also highlight curriculum overload, limited opportunities for experiential learning, and a disconnect between reform aspirations and curriculum implementation. Conclusion The findings suggest that strengthening inclusive teacher preparation in Ghana requires more coherent curriculum design, institutional support, and expanded opportunities for practice-based learning.
