This study examined how executive functions and cognitive-linguistic skills relate to online lexical processing during sentence reading as a function of word frequency, word length, and concreteness in 171 first- and second-grade children. Executive functions (interference, verbal working memory, and fluency) and linguistic abilities (vocabulary, Rapid Automatized Naming, and phonological awareness) were assessed and linked to two oculomotor indices of word processing, namely First Fixation Duration (FFD) and Total Fixation Duration (TFD), computed for six lexical areas of interest, using descriptive analyses and regression models. Children processed high-frequency words more efficiently than low-frequency words in both FFD and TFD. Early efficiency was associated with fluency and phonological awareness (PA), whereas later efficiency was linked to interference control. Although long words descriptively elicited longer fixations, neither age nor cognitive and linguistic skills significantly predicted differences in FFD or TFD, suggesting that word length was not a reliable predictor of lexical processing efficiency in this task. No consistent advantage was found for concrete over abstract words. Abstract words imposed greater demands during the initial stages of processing (FFD), but these differences diminished in TFD and were not explained by cognitive or linguistic skills. Taken together, these findings provide preliminary evidence that lexical processing efficiency in emergent readers may depend more strongly on word familiarity and on cognitive and linguistic skills than on word length or concreteness, highlighting the interaction between stimulus properties and individual competencies in early reading. However, the findings should be interpreted with caution, as they are task-specific and based on limited item sampling, with only one item representing each lexical category.
Executive function (EF) is foundational for school readiness, mental health, and social adaptation. Although cross-national studies document cultural variation in EF, less is known about whether EF differs across ethnic groups within the same national and educational context. In China, Yi, Bai, and Naxi children may differ in home language, childrearing practices, and educational beliefs, making them informative for examining universal and context-specific patterns of EF development. This study examined Executive Function (EF) development in a sample of 190 Chinese ethnic children (Yi, Bai, Naxi; 115 boys, 75 girls) aged 4–6 years. These findings revealed that, (1) Overall EF scores were highest for Bai children, followed by Naxi children, and than Yi children. (2) For inhibition control (IC), at ages 4 and 5, Bai and Naxi children performed significantly better than Yi children, whereas no significant differences were observed among the three ethnic groups at age 6. (3) For cognitive flexibility (CF), Bai and Naxi children are significantly better than Yi children. On the size, color, and shape sub-dimensions, pass rates were highest for Bai children, followed by Naxi and then Yi children; on the quantity sub-dimension, pass rates were highest for Naxi children, followed by Bai and then Yi children. (4) For working memory (WM), at ages 4 and 6, the ranking of scores across the three ethnic groups showed that Bai children obtained the highest scores, followed by Naxi children and than Yi children; at age 5, Bai children scored significantly higher than Naxi and Yi children. These findings contribute to theories of EF development by revealing both age-related convergence and cross-ethnic variation, and they inform culturally responsive early childhood education and intervention.
Executive functions (EF) predict school readiness and later adjustment. The cultural-historical tradition gives play a central place in preschool education, yet it remains unclear which types of play, under what conditions, and through which pathways support EF between the ages of 3 and 6. This article aims to critically analyze the evidence on play and EF in this age range, distinguishing between efficacy, association, and mechanism. The method was a systematic review with narrative synthesis, reported according to PRISMA 2020. Of 88 records (2000–2026), 21 primary studies provided direct evidence and 26 works provided complementary evidence. Rule-based games and pretend play showed favorable effects in studies with active control conditions, particularly on inhibitory control. However, the largest-scale curricular study found no effects, and block play showed no main effects. Benefits tend to be concentrated among children with initial disadvantages, and evidence on working memory, cognitive flexibility, and transfer to the classroom is scarce. In conclusion, play appears to be a promising context rather than an effective intervention in itself; its effects depend on executive demand, adult mediation, progression, and implementation fidelity.
Introduction Tactical decision-making in basketball depends on the rapid extraction, maintenance, and use of changing spatial information, but the cognitive abilities associated with tactical performance may not be the same at different levels of expertise. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 90 male basketball players were classified as expert, intermediate, or novice ( n = 30 per group). Participants completed an MOT task, a computerized Corsi block-tapping task assessing VSWM, and a video-based TDM task. Group differences, within-group correlations, and expertise-moderated regression models were examined. Results Experts showed higher MOT thresholds and TDM scores than both intermediate and novice players, and higher Corsi spans than novices. Within experts, MOT was positively associated with TDM ( r = 0.535, FDR-adjusted p = 0.010), whereas within intermediate players, Corsi span was positively associated with TDM ( r = 0.726, FDR-adjusted p < 0.001). The omnibus moderated-regression interaction block was significant, F (4, 80) = 3.331, p = 0.014. Direct pairwise slope contrasts showed that the MOT–TDM slope was stronger in experts than in intermediate players (Δ B = 7.210, Holm-adjusted p = 0.043) and that the Corsi–TDM slope was stronger in intermediate than in expert players (Δ B = 6.682, Holm-adjusted p = 0.042); the other pairwise slope contrasts did not survive multiplicity correction. Sensitivity analyses using Spearman correlations, HC3 robust standard errors, and influence diagnostics supported the main expert–intermediate contrasts. Discussion These findings provide exploratory evidence that cognitive–decision associations differ across basketball expertise levels, particularly between expert and intermediate players. The cross-sectional design does not establish causal mechanisms or developmental transitions.
The main purpose of this study was to determine the differences in executive function performance levels of esports players who play First-Person Shooter (FPS) and Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game types compared to non-video game players (NVGPs). Other purposes of the study are to examine the relationships of executive function components and their relationships with in-game rank and total game play time variables. The study groups consisted of ninety volunteer participants, all of whom were male young adults between the ages of 18 and 34, 30 of whom actively played FPS video games, 30 of whom actively played MOBA video games, and 30 of whom NVGPs. Corsi Block-Tapping Test (CBT), Wisconsin (Berg) Card Sorting Test (WCST), and Stroop Test Çapa Form (ST) were used as data collection tools. According to the findings of the study; FPS players had significantly higher scores than NVGPs (p < 0.001, F = 8.55) in CBT and less error percentage than the NVGPs (p < 0.01, F = 5.58) and MOBA players had significantly less interference time than NVGPs in the ST (p < 0.001, F = 7.66). In addition, there was a significant negative correlation between CBT and ST interference times for all players (p < 0.05; r = −0.28) and a significant negative correlation between in-game skill and ST interference times for FPS players (p < 0.05; r = −0.41). These findings suggest that digital video game experience shapes cognitive profiles based on genre-specific demands; while FPS gameplay primarily enhances visuospatial working memory capacity, MOBA gameplay fosters stronger inhibition control, with higher in-game skill level reflecting superior inhibitory control in FPS gameplay, and relationship of visuospatial working memory and inhibition components demonstrating an underlying interrelated structure.
Esports research increasingly recognizes that multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games contain differentiated team roles, yet it remains unclear whether these role differences correspond to cognitive and learning-related profiles beyond immediate gameplay. This exploratory secondary analysis examined whether naturally emerging predominant roles were associated with post-intervention transfer-related outcomes among novice League of Legends players. Here, transfer-related refers to outcomes assessed beyond immediate gameplay and does not imply causal demonstration of transfer. Data came from the experimental arm of an eight-week quasi-experimental intervention requiring at least 18 hours of gameplay. Of 42 experimental participants, one predominantly played jungle and was excluded because this created a single-participant category. The final sample comprised 41 undergraduates classified as top lane (n = 5), mid lane (n = 15), marksman/ADC (n = 12), or support (n = 9). Outcomes included EEG-based attention-related engagement, working-memory-related theta activity, and theta/alpha-based cognitive load recorded during a standardized dual n-back task, together with 21st-century learner skills and content-specific learning performance. After z-standardization, Euclidean distances were analyzed using PERMANOVA with 9,999 permutations, principal coordinates analysis, and a multivariate dispersion diagnostic. The omnibus PERMANOVA did not detect statistically significant role-based differentiation, pseudo-F(3, 37) = 0.941, p = .526, R² = .071. PCoA showed substantial overlap, no statistically detectable dispersion differences were found, and the baseline sensitivity analysis was non-significant. These findings suggest that functional role differentiation within MOBA gameplay should not be assumed to produce corresponding differentiation in transfer-related outcomes among novice players with relatively short role exposure.
Shared cognitive–linguistic skills support reading and spelling, yet they may dissociate into heterogeneous literacy profiles. This study examined whether Chinese students learning English as a second language (ESL) with poor reading (PR), poor spelling (PS), combined word-reading and spelling difficulties (English learning difficulties; ELD), and typical development (TD) exhibited distinct literacy outcomes and cognitive–linguistic profiles, and which skills uniquely predicted subgroup membership. Participants were 190 Grade 2–3 Hong Kong Chinese students who were classified into predefined literacy profiles based on grade-normed performance on standardized English word reading and word spelling measures. Students completed assessments of vocabulary knowledge, phonological awareness, orthographic knowledge, rapid naming, morphological awareness, working memory, and IQ. Multivariate analyses of covariance showed that the predefined literacy profiles were associated with overlapping but differentially expressed cognitive-linguistic patterns. Hierarchical multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that vocabulary knowledge and phonological awareness consistently differentiated all difficulty groups from TD peers. In contrast, orthographic knowledge uniquely predicted PR and ELD but not isolated PS. Rapid naming and morphological awareness did not show unique contributions. These findings are consistent with literacy difficulties reflecting shared but differentially weighted cognitive-linguistic constraints, supporting a multiple-deficit perspective and highlighting vocabulary knowledge and phonological awareness as important targets for assessment and intervention in ESL learners.
Objective Executive function may protect against internalizing and externalizing problems, but it may also be compromised by these problems. This longitudinal study examined the developmental transactions between executive function and internalizing and externalizing problems across late childhood to adolescence using a Chinese sample.Method A total of 285 fifth-graders (younger cohort, 10.81 years, 58.6% boys) and 269 ninth-graders (older cohort, 14.74 years, 47.2% boys) were assessed for five waves across 3 years. At each wave (starting November 2020), youth reported internalizing and externalizing problems and completed inhibitory control, shifting, and updating tasks, and caregivers reported their child’s executive functioning by questionnaire. Results Random-intercept cross-lagged panel models revealed that poorer task-based executive functions predicted later externalizing problems in the younger cohort. In the older cohort, bidirectional associations emerged between rating-based executive function and internalizing problems, with component-specific analyses revealing that rating-based updating showed the most consistent associations. Gender differences emerged: parent-rated poorer executive functions predicted increases in externalizing and internalizing problems among girls in the older cohort. Conclusions These findings suggest the variations across age cohorts and measurement approaches in the associations between executive function and internalizing and externalizing problems from late childhood through adolescence. Further, these findings, derived from a Chinese cultural context, highlight the need for cross-cultural replication to determine generalizability.
The increasing integration of digital media into children's lives has raised concerns about possible associations between screen exposure and cognitive development. This narrative review synthesizes empirical evidence published from 2014 to 2025 on associations between screen exposure and attention, memory, executive function, and related developmental outcomes among school-aged children (6–11 years) and adolescents (12–18 years) and interprets the findings through Cognitive Load Theory. Searches of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar were conducted in May 2025 and updated in June 2025. Following duplicate removal and screening by one reviewer, 13 empirical studies were included. The evidence encompassed cross-sectional, longitudinal, neuroimaging, and Mendelian randomization designs. Higher or poorly structured screen exposure was generally associated with attention difficulties, weaker working memory or executive function, academic challenges, and differences in brain regions involved in cognitive control. However, findings were not uniform: interactive, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate digital activities were sometimes associated with neutral or beneficial cognitive outcomes. Cognitive Load Theory offers a plausible interpretation in which rapid, distracting, or multitasked media increases extraneous cognitive load and leaves fewer working-memory resources for task-relevant processing and schema construction. Because most included studies were observational and screen exposure was measured inconsistently, the evidence does not establish that screen use directly causes cognitive impairment. Future research should use longitudinal or experimental designs, objective and multidimensional measures of digital use, and direct measures of cognitive load. Guidance for families and educators should consider content, context, timing, and purpose in addition to duration.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in second language (L2) learning, yet the cognitive demands of AI-mediated environments, particularly for logographic languages such as Chinese, remain underexplored. This study investigated the interrelationships among executive function (EF), reading-related linguistic skills, AI literacy, and Chinese L2 reading comprehension in 155 Form 4 Southeast Asian ethnic minority students in Hong Kong. Using a quantitative design, we validated a three-factor EF model (working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control) and examined how these components, together with orthographic and morphological skills, relate to L2 reading outcomes. Structural equation modeling showed that all three EF components significantly predicted reading comprehension, underscoring the importance of executive control for processing a complex logographic script. AI literacy significantly supported both foundational reading skills and overall reading comprehension. A key finding of the integrated model is that cognitive flexibility significantly predicted AI literacy, which in turn significantly predicted reading comprehension, indicating an indirect pathway from EF to reading via AI literacy. This pattern highlights the cognitive underpinnings of digital engagement in L2 learning. The study extends the Reading Systems Framework by positioning AI literacy as an external scaffold that interacts with learners’ cognitive resources, and offers practical implications for designing cognitively supportive, AI-enhanced Chinese L2 instruction for ethnic minority learners.
This study examined the associations between inhibitory control, working memory, inductive reasoning, awareness, and children’s narrative retelling abilities in early childhood. A total of 212 children aged 4–7 years participated in the study. Executive functions were assessed through measures of verbal and visuospatial working memory and inhibitory control, inductive reasoning was assessed using a Raven-like matrix task, and awareness was assessed through perceptual and inferential awareness tasks. Narrative retelling was evaluated using a story retelling task that captured multiple aspects of narrative performance. Correlational analyses indicated moderate associations between inhibitory control, working memory, and several narrative retelling indicators. Narrative retelling performance also increased significantly with age, indicating clear developmental gains from the preschool to the early school years. Structural equation modeling further showed that inhibitory control and verbal working memory were significant predictors of the latent narrative retelling construct, whereas visuospatial working memory and inductive reasoning were not significantly associated with narrative retelling. Awareness showed small but significant associations with certain narrative retelling indicators.
Students increasingly rely on online video for help with class material. Here we ask if this form of self-directed learning can be leveraged to improve learning outcomes of regular classroom instruction. Specifically, we test whether encouraging students to find relevant instructional videos online, paired with scaffolding through association questions, benefits learning in an introductory college physics course. A total of 103 undergraduate students were assigned to either a control group (conventional reading assignments and exercises) or an intervention group (unassisted free video search and viewing along with association questions). We also assessed working memory capacity, motivation, and collected their grade-point averages (GPA) to determine the effect of these individual traits. Learning performance was assessed via quizzes, exams, and pre/post physics knowledge tests. In all three measures, we found evidence for a beneficial effect of this intervention. However, on the exam the evidence was only indirect, namely, performance depended on the level of engagement with the association questions. Working memory, GPA, and motivation were significant predictors on most outcomes measures. These findings suggest that student engagement and cognitive traits play a critical role in the effectiveness of video-based, autonomous learning interventions. These results indicate that integrating scaffolding questions into regular at home self directed video search enhances learning, as students are prompted to actively engage with the material.
In recent years, serious games have gained increasing attention as effective tools for supporting learning and assessing emerging cognitive skills in early educational settings. Within this perspective, the present study introduces Starlex, a serious game designed to screen pre-literacy skills in children aged 5–7 years, a critical stage for the development of foundational reading and writing abilities. Developed within a PNRR-funded project, the game comprises four mini-games aimed at assessing key predictors of reading acquisition, including visual discrimination and working memory. Following an initial phase of playability and usability testing, Starlex was administered to a pilot sample of 84 children in early education contexts. Game-based performance was compared with standardized assessments targeting the same cognitive domains. Findings indicate that Starlex provides a promising and engaging approach to the early identification of learning-related difficulties, showing good alignment with traditional measures, as well as satisfactory levels of usability and acceptance among young learners. While further refinements are needed to enhance the robustness of the tool, its replicability emerges as a key feature, supporting sustained engagement and enabling continuous observation of children’s performance over time. Overall, this study highlights the potential of serious games as complementary tools for formative assessment and early screening within educational environments, contributing to more accessible and child-friendly evaluation practices.
Children show considerable individual differences in their early literacy and numeracy skills around the start of primary school. In this study, we explored the domain-specific and domain-general predictors of these differences by following 205 children longitudinally across four time points, during kindergarten and first grade. Using a person-centered approach, we identified three latent longitudinal profiles for literacy and four profiles for numeracy. The differences between profiles were largely quantitative, reflecting a stable order from ‘low’ to ‘high’ performance across time on all tasks. The profiles were predictive of later reading and math achievement in second grade, including cross-domain effects. Domain-general cognitive skills (verbal and visuospatial working memory, non-verbal reasoning, RAN) differentiated more strongly between the numeracy profiles than between literacy profiles. Rapid development of letter knowledge, word decoding and arithmetic around the start of first grade may reflect a role of formal education in these skills. Our findings indicate that early literacy and numeracy development are characterized primarily by stable, quantitative differences between children, with domain-general cognitive skills showing a stronger association with numeracy compared to literacy. Together, these results highlight the importance of early identification of developmental trajectories, as these profiles strongly predict later academic outcomes across domains.
This Hypothesis and Theory paper addresses a design problem at the center of AI-assisted research writing: which cognitive demands should AI reduce, and which must remain the writer’s own work. Generative AI can absorb the effort of drafting, organizing, and synthesizing prose, but that same effort is where understanding takes shape. Recent empirical work documents reduced neural engagement, weaker recall of one’s own writing, and a diminished sense of authorship among writers who rely heavily on AI assistance. The paper grounds this problem in cognitive load theory, which distinguishes intrinsic load (the element interactivity a task inherently requires) from extraneous load (demands that do not contribute to learning), and which treats germane processes as the working memory resources a writer allocates to intrinsic load. It draws on productive struggle and generative processing to explain why germane processing cannot be offloaded: when a tool performs the work, the processing does not transfer to the writer; it does not occur. Two research questions are posed. First, which cognitive demands in research writing constitute extraneous load that AI could reduce, and which require germane processing that must remain the writer’s own. Second, how can human-in-the-loop AI collaboration be designed across the phases of research writing so that this distinction is operationalized through human judgment? The contribution is a nine-phase conceptual framework mapped to the sections of a research paper, from curiosity and inquiry through references and submission. Each phase specifies the dominant cognitive demand, the AI role (ranging from minimal involvement to full collaboration), and design guidelines for tools and interactions. The framework addresses research writing from secondary school (grades 9–12) through postdoctoral and professional research, across disciplines. It treats phase-aware AI use as responsive pedagogy applied to research writing: instruction and tool design that respond to the cognitive demands of the task rather than to the tool’s capabilities. The paper draws implications for the design of responsive digital education, including tool selection, assessment, equity, and support for writers with cognitive differences. The framework is intended to preserve the cognitive work that makes research meaningful.
Background Hikikomori, a form of prolonged social withdrawal, has been widely studied in East Asia but remains underexplored in the Middle East. Cultural and social factors may influence its cognitive profile, necessitating localized research. Aim To compare cognitive performance between Hikikomori cases and non-cases in Oman using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), focusing on executive function, memory recall, and processing speed. Methods A case-control study was conducted in 2024 with 150 participants (54 Hikikomori cases, 96 controls) recruited from a tertiary hospital in Oman. Hikikomori cases were classified using a broad HiDE-I definition, which included pathological, at-risk, and resemblance Hikikomori categories. CANTAB was used to assess key cognitive domains. Independent t-tests and linear regression analyses were performed to compare outcomes. Results Hikikomori cases showed significant impairments in visual processing accuracy (p < 0.001), response latency (p = 0.004), immediate recall (p = 0.031), delayed recall (p = 0.009), and planning efficiency (p < 0.001) compared to non-cases. Adjusted regression analyses—controlling for age, gender, education, income, employment, marital status, and governorate—confirmed that Hikikomori status was significantly associated with lower visual processing accuracy (β = −0.453, p = 0.001), slower response latency (β = 0.266, p = 0.001), poorer immediate (β = −0.201, p = 0.019) and delayed recall (β = −0.255, p = 0.003), and reduced planning efficiency (β = −0.453, p = 0.001). No significant differences were found for spatial working memory tasks. Conclusion Hikikomori individuals in Oman exhibit significant deficits in executive function, memory recall, processing speed, and visual attention, even after adjusting for socio-demographic factors. These findings underscore the importance of early neurocognitive screening and tailored interventions. This is one of the first studies to explore Hikikomori’s cognitive profile in the Middle East.
The current study was designed to examine the relation between intimate partner violence (IPV) and children's memory and drew from a socioeconomically and racially diverse sample of children living in and around a midsized southeastern city (n = 140). Mother-reported IPV when the children were 30 months old was a significant predictor of children's short-term, working, and deliberate memory at 60 months of age, even after controlling for the children's sex and race, the families' income-to-needs ratio, the children's expressive vocabulary, and maternal harsh-intrusive parenting behaviors. These findings add to the limited extant literature that finds linkages between IPV and children's cognitive functioning and suggest that living in households in which physical violence is perpetrated among intimate partners may have a negative effect on multiple domains of children's memory development.
