Justice stands at the centre of Islamic law, yet its link with human values remains unclear. Many Muslim states apply Islamic rules without reference to their moral purposes. This gap produces unfair outcomes for women, minorities, and accused persons. This study aims to show how Quranic imperatives connect legal rules with universal human values. It also explains how Maqasid al-Shariah can guide that connection in modern law. The research uses a qualitative design with doctrinal and document analysis. It examines the Quran, Sunnah, classical juristic works, Pakistani statutes, and recent scholarship. The results show that justice governs every Quranic rule and applies equally to all people. Maqasid al-Shariah bridges divine text and human welfare, while human dignity links Islamic law with human rights. The study recommends purpose-based review of laws, judicial training, and stronger protection for weaker parties. Islamic law achieves real fairness only when text and purpose work together.
This article examines ethics education in schools in the light of three converging processes: the expansion of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), human rights education, and the growing importance of digital environments in everyday life. It argues that Ethics Education goes beyond the transmission of values and involves issues of justice, participation, care, and recognition. Drawing on recent literature, the article analyzes both the contributions and tensions surrounding CSE as well as the challenges posed by digital citizenship. It concludes that schools currently require a broader political-pedagogical horizon to address these issues in an integrated manner.
Abstract : The Northeastern College–College of Liberal Arts (NC-COLA) is committed to uplifting community well-being through responsive extension programs. This study evaluated the community needs of Barangay Mabini across seven domains: Education and Parenting, Food Safety and Hygiene, Human Rights and Violence Awareness, Livelihood and Financial Literacy, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM), Environmental Conservation, and Organizational Planning and Management. Using a descriptive mixed-method design combining survey questionnaires and key informant interviews, results showed that Livelihood and Financial Literacy obtained the highest weighted mean (4.75), identifying economic vulnerability as the community’s most pressing concern. Food Safety and Hygiene (4.72), Organizational Planning and Management (4.68), Environmental Conservation (4.63), and DRRM (4.59) also registered high demand, reflecting gaps in public health, governance, and disaster preparedness. Human Rights and Violence Awareness (4.48) indicated greater preference for practical safety programs over formal legal education. It was concluded that Barangay Mabini requires coordinated, multi-stakeholder interventions targeting economic empowerment, institutional governance, and community resilience. Recommendations include financial literacy and livelihood programs, strengthening of the Barangay DRRM Council, systematic waste management, and capacity-building for local officials in partnership with relevant government agencies.
Statelessness affects an estimated 4.3 to 10 million people worldwide, denying them access to fundamental rights including education, employment, healthcare, and freedom from arbitrary detention. While stateless individuals are recognised as a marginalised group at elevated risk of human rights violations, discrimination, and trauma, the psychological impact of statelessness remains under-researched. This study aimed to explore how adults with lived experience of statelessness in the UK make sense of its impact on their mental health, and how they access support for any psychological difficulties. A qualitative design using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used. Seven adults affected by statelessness were recruited through non-governmental organisations using purposive sampling. Participants varied in the reasons why they had been affected by statelessness, country of origin, and current immigration status in the UK. Four group experiential themes were generated. Trapped in a Kafkaesque System captured participants’ experience of draconian, discriminatory, and self-perpetuating bureaucratic structures that stripped autonomy, security, and time. Erosion of Self and Belonging described feeling administratively reduced to a non-person, dual legal and relational abandonment, and severed connections. Psychological and Embodied Harm located anxiety, depression, suicidality, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and somatic symptoms unambiguously within structural conditions, with two participants reporting that UK procedures damaged their mental health more than prior experiences of incarceration; intergenerational effects of the impacts of statelessness were also identified. Survival Strategies and Systemic Limits captured the protective role of community, faith, activism, and equipped services, while emphasising that resilience was bounded and could not substitute for rights. The findings articulate a pathway in which Kafkaesque systems produce entrapment, erode the person’s sense of identity, belonging and connection to others, and generate psychological and embodied harm only partially mediated by coping. Implications include the need for policy reform (reduced waits, restored and adequate Legal Aid funding, the right to work and healthcare access during protracted legal processes), clinician training, and services that recognise statelessness-related distress as legitimate clinical territory rather than deflecting responsibility to immigration authorities.
Franco Basaglia's centenary, celebrated on March 11, 2024, invites reflection on the historical significance of his legacy. His work in defense of people with mental disorders represents his fight for the protection of human dignity and the value of life. Pejoratively called “the philosopher Basaglia,” he transformed psychiatric practices by pushing the boundaries of medicine to address profound human rights issues. Basaglia adopted an existential-analytical stance that underpinned his commitment to psychiatric reform and the management of mental health practice, inspiring changes in public policies around the world. This commemorative editorial presents a historical overview of Franco Basaglia's contributions to psychiatric reform and their implications for mental health care.

Demonstrations are a form of public participation in expressing aspirations and opinions in a democratic country. However, demonstrations must be conducted by considering citizens' rights and obligations, as well as applicable laws and regulations. This article aims to examine demonstrations as a form of democratic participation from the perspective of Pancasila and Civic Education, particularly in relation to freedom of expression, human rights, and citizens' responsibilities. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using a literature review approach. Data were collected through an examination of relevant literature, scientific articles, and legislation. The findings indicate that demonstrations serve as a means for the public to express their aspirations and participate in democratic life. Freedom of expression during demonstrations must be exercised responsibly by respecting the rights of others and complying with applicable laws. In the context of Civic Education, demonstrations can serve as a means of learning about democracy and fostering citizens' awareness of their rights, obligations, and social responsibilities. Furthermore, the development of digital technology influences the dissemination of information and public participation in expressing aspirations. Therefore, understanding democracy, digital literacy, and legal awareness is essential to developing critical, responsible, and democratic citizens.
This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the theorization of the Quranic human rights discourse in the work of "Achmad Abubakar", "Indonesian Islamic studies academic", particularly regarding the theoretical basis, conceptual framework, and its relevance to the development of contemporary Islamic human rights studies. This study uses a qualitative method with a library research approach through a descriptive-critical analysis of the works of Achmad Abubakar and supporting literature related to human rights, interpretation, and maqasid al-syari’ah. The results of the study indicate that the theorization of Quranic human rights in Achmad Abubakar’s thoughts is built on three main foundations, namely maqasid al-syari’ah, humanistic interpretation, and the universal principles of humanity in the Quran. His conceptual framework emphasizes the principles of karimah al-insan, justice, freedom, and equality as the normative basis for human rights protection in Islam. This thinking demonstrates an integrative effort to reconcile the universality of modern human rights with Qur’anic values through a contextual and multidisciplinary approach. Furthermore, this study finds that Achmad Abubakar’s approach has made a significant contribution to expanding the socio-humanistic interpretation paradigm in Indonesia.
Palestinian refugee camps in the occupied West Bank share the same geographic space as adjacent urban neighbourhoods but remain socially, politically and institutionally distinct. This study examined whether refugee camp residence is associated with greater exposure to human rights violations, political violence, deprivation and poorer mental health. A cross-sectional survey of 3000 Palestinian adults was conducted in 2025 across three refugee camps and neighbouring urban areas. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted. Overall, 77.1% reported at least one human rights violation, 91.7% deprivation, 77.1% personal exposure to political violence, 81.1% witnessed political violence and 30.0% dissatisfaction with mental health. Compared with urban residents, refugee camp residents had higher odds of reporting any human rights violation (aOR 1.52, 95% CI 1.28-1.81), personal (aOR 3.48, 95% CI 2.54-4.78), household (aOR 4.24, 95% CI 3.62-4.98) and witnessing political violence (aOR 4.48, 95% CI 3.52-5.69), deprivation (aOR 1.60, 95% CI 1.34-1.91) and dissatisfaction with mental health (aOR 2.51, 95% CI 1.97-3.19). The results suggest that health inequities experienced by Palestinian refugee camp residents are produced through the cumulative effects of structural violence, deprivation and systematic human rights violations rather than by spatial location alone.
Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) face significant challenges shaped by forced migration, trauma, legal uncertainty, and systemic barriers in host countries. While education is widely recognised as important for integration, less is known about how educational experiences contribute to UASC wellbeing, safety, belonging, and future opportunities. Drawing on Kohli (2011), the Social Identity Approach to Health (Haslam, Jetten, Postmes, and Haslam 2009; Kёllezi, and Reicher 2012; Herman 1992) trauma recovery theory and human rights framework (UNCRC 1989), this multi-perspective qualitative study explores the role of education in supporting the wellbeing, integration, and success of UASC. The study analysed qualitative interviews with 13 UASC care leavers, 10 foster carers, and 16 education professionals. The analysis identifies four key themes: safety and trust, social connections and belonging, success and resilience and equitable access. The findings highlight that educational establishments can help young people reconstruct ordinary life, and develop psychological stability, social connection, and future opportunities. Simultaneously, exclusionary practices, legal ambiguity, and structural barriers can undermine these processes. The study advances understanding of education as social and institutional contributor to wellbeing, and argues for trauma-informed right-based and inclusive educational practices that support UASC wellbeing and long-term social inclusion.
Civic education in Indonesia is mandated by Law No. 20 of 2003 to form both “democratic and responsible citizens” (Article 3) and citizens with “a sense of nationality and love of the homeland” (Elucidation of Article 37, paragraph 1). This article examines the normative coherence between these two mandates, arguing that civic education must not only build national identity but also cultivate citizens capable of reasoning, dialogue, participation, and responsibility within democratic life. Adopting a qualitative-philosophical approach that combines philosophical hermeneutics, ontological, epistemological, and axiological analysis, and immanent critique informed by John Dewey’s progressivism, the study identifies three loci of tension: a teleological tension between democratic citizenship and affective national orientation; an epistemic-pedagogical tension between inquiry, student agency, and value internalisation; and an axiological tension among democracy, human rights, pluralism, and nationality. Building on these findings, the article formulates anti-indoctrination criteria comprising public reason, fallibilism, student agency, deliberative dialogue, and argument-based evaluation. It contributes to the literature by reconstructing national consciousness and love of the homeland as a form of reflective civic nationalism – one that remains compatible with democracy, openness to criticism, and public responsibility.
Introduction: The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) enumerates a broad, heterogeneous set of rights and requires their monitoring. The Human Rights-Based Well-Being Checklist (HRWC) is a 39-item instrument aligned with the CRPD; it covers this heterogeneous content, and no subscales were defined at its development.Using exploratory network analysis, we examined the response structure of the HRWC to clarify its descriptive interpretation and to assess whether empirically detected item communities were sufficiently stable to justify subscale construction or item removal. The focal case was a set of eight items that are reverse-keyed in the scoring scheme and framed in terms of adverse rightsrelated experiences (Items 1-4, 12, 14, 17, and 18).This set was defined by the scoring scheme independently of the network results; the decision to focus on it was post hoc. Methods: This secondary analysis used registry data from adults with disabilities in Muntinlupa, Philippines (N = 1,014).The HRWC is a self-report instrument whose items describe day-to-day situations corresponding to CRPD rights; each item is scored 0-4, giving a possible total of 0-156.Regularized partial-correlation networks, in which each edge represents the association between two items after accounting for all the other items, were estimated under two parallel specifications: rank-based Spearman correlations, which use only the rank order of the responses, and polychoric correlations, which treat each response as a coarsened observation of an underlying continuous variable.Item communities, that is, groups of items more densely interconnected with one another than with the rest of the network, were detected with the Walktrap algorithm, and their reproducibility was examined in 1,000 bootstrap resamples per specification. Results: Under Spearman estimation, the eight items formed one community containing no other items (27 of 28 possible within-set edges positive and nonzero; one absent), were retained across algorithms, regularization settings, and the nonparanormal network, and were reproduced in 885 of the 1,000 resamples (88.5%).Under polychoric estimation, the Walktrap point estimate divided the eight items along a shared stem (Items 1-4 versus 12, 14, 17, 18), although three alternative detection algorithms recovered that single community; the same eight-item-only community recurred under Walktrap in 333 of the 1,000 resamples (33.3%).Whether the eight items formed one community or two subgroups, thus, varied with the correlation method, the detection algorithm, and the resample. Conclusions: Item-level profiles and the existing unweighted total serve different descriptive functions.Item-level profiles preserve information on the distinct CRPD-related conditions represented by individual items, whereas the unweighted total can provide a concise summary across all 39 responses.Substantive content could not be separated from keying, shared stems, item position, or response distributions, and the findings provide no empirical support from these analyses for constructing subscales or removing items on the basis of the observed network communities.
Covert medication (CM) - the surreptitious administration of drugs in food or drink is often framed as a 'moral gamble' and remains a pervasive yet controversial necessity in the care of older people with cognitive impairments. As global populations age and neurodegenerative conditions increase, the clinical reliance on CM has become structurally entrenched. This article evaluates the practice within the legal jurisdiction of England and Wales, specifically through the dual lenses of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA 2005) and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). It provides an original contribution to the literature by synthesising the clinical application of CM with the statutory duty of candour under Regulation 20, proposing a 'tripartite test' of Imminence, Gravity and Exhaustion to bridge the current regulatory dissonance. It explores the fundamental tension between the clinical duty of beneficence and the patient's right to bodily integrity, specifically addressing the tension between the statutory duty of candour and clinical strategies predicated on concealment. By distinguishing between the physiological risks of overt coercion and the 'quiet deception' of CM, the paper rebuts deontological claims that CM constitutes an irreconcilable violation of rights. Instead, applying a rule-utilitarian framework, it argues that CM is a benevolent necessity when used to prevent certain physiological harm and preserve residual dignity. Furthermore, the article analyses judicial responses, integrating recent precedents such as Re A (2022) and An NHS Trust v XB (2020), to define a framework of necessity required to legitimise the practice. Ultimately, the paper concludes that while CM carries a significant moral and relational cost, it remains an ethically justifiable measure of last resort within a transparent English and Welsh legal architecture that prioritises accountability and consultation over administrative convenience.
This narrative review examines cross-cultural similarities and differences in the interrogation process of criminal suspects, with a focus on how cultural norms, legal frameworks, and communication styles influence investigative interviewing techniques and methods. The practice of interrogation has evolved from a confession-driven strategy and the use of coercive methods to a more evidence-based and ethical approach, as represented by the Méndez Principles of Effective Interviewing and the PEACE model in the United Kingdom. Cross-cultural evaluations demonstrate that planning, cognitive interviewing, and rapport-building are increasingly being recognized as globally accepted best practices; however, their application remains inconsistent due to variances in professionalization, training, and institutional support across jurisdictions. Communication styles are heavily shaped by cultural norms, and perceptions of questioning tactics vary considerably among cultures. The review draws a distinction between interrogation, suspect interviewing, investigative interviewing, and information-gathering interviewing, as these terms carry different legal and ethical implications across jurisdictions. The review highlights the difficulties in protecting vulnerable groups (including juveniles, persons with mental health conditions or cognitive impairments, non-native speakers, and culturally marginalized suspects) in incorporating human rights safeguards and in customizing training to fit local cultural environments. A methodological note is provided to clarify the narrative scope of the review, its search parameters, and its thematic organization.
