Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the most common disabilities in South African schools. However, there is still limited information about children with ASD and their schooling needs in South Africa. Teachers may find it particularly taxing to address behavioral challenges while simultaneously seeking to provide fair and accessible learning opportunities for all learners. This study identifies effective behavioural strategies to help manage the challenging behaviour of learners with ASD. The study conducted observations and semi-structured interviews as part of a qualitative multiple-case study design. The data were analysed inductively, and the results revealed that teachers relied largely on their own informal strategies. These included attempts to meet the child's individual needs, providing positive reinforcement to improve behavioural regulation, practicing positive communication, and using structured routines and regulation breaks. The implementation of these strategies was carried out without formal training or systematic guidance. Learner facilitators also provided valuable support to learners with ASD. These approaches address the inclusion of learners with unique learning capabilities in mainstream learning environments through teacher initiative. This was done to address behavioural challenges in populations with limited systemic support. Given the exploratory, small-scale nature of this study, findings are intended to offer in-depth insight rather than generalisable conclusions. Additionally, recommendations are provided to assist mainstream schools and teacher training.
Context and relevance. The study investigates the contributions of Lev Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory to Brazilian special/inclusive education, particularly regarding the constitution of the subject with autism in school contexts. The theoretical framework is grounded in the concepts of drama, freedom and singularity, understanding the schooling process as a privileged pathway of human (trans)formation. Objective. To analyse how pedagogical knowledge impacts the constitution of the child with autism, based on the notion of constitutive singularity. Hypothesis. The schooling process anchored in critical-emancipatory pedagogical knowledge operates as a promoter of the subject's humanisation, in opposition to traditional clinical approaches that reduce the subject to diagnosis and to ableist perspectives that position them in a state of devaluation. Methods and materials. The research, adopting a cultural-historical approach, was configured as intervention-research with an eight-year-old student with autism, enrolled in the second year of primary education. Video recordings, audio recordings, photographs, field diaries and interviews with the teacher, the child and his mother were utilised. Data were analysed through the microgenetic approach. Results. The analysis of two paradigmatic episodes of story retelling through illustration and physical education class evidences that the child, upon inserting personal elements into school tasks, manifests his will and singularises himself, expressing the drama of the social personality as a struggle for existence. Conclusions. Understanding singularity as a dialectical, historical, cultural and dramatic process allows us to overcome pathologising views and to recognise that disability is not a destiny, but a condition that, in relations with others and with culture, can be transformed into potentiality.
Abstract We investigated public beliefs about the extent to which mental disorders are perceived to be part of the true self, that is, the set of traits and behaviors that compose one’s core character. We conducted three quantitative vignette-based studies (total n = 601) in UK general public samples, considering seven disorders (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anorexia nervosa, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)). For each disorder, participants rated how much the disorder reflects the vignette character’s true self, along with perceived causes of the disorders (studies 1 and 2), perceived severity, age of onset, duration, probability of recovery (study 2), and stigmatization (study 3). Disorders differed sharply in the extent to which they were judged to be part of the true self: ADHD, ASD, and OCD received higher true self ratings than major depressive disorder, anorexia nervosa, and schizophrenia, with bipolar disorder intermediate. A disorder was rated more ‘true self’ when it was: perceived as more “biologically” caused; less “psychologically” caused; less severe; and recovery was perceived as less likely. Although the extent of stigmatization also varied across disorders, true self ratings did not predict stigmatization. Our results show that the public thinks about different mental disorders in quite different ways, suggesting that different disorders should not be lumped together when considering attitudes and their consequences.
Perceptual expertise is widely assumed to refine multisensory perception, yet the empirical literature appears inconsistent. Trained musicians show narrower audiovisual temporal integration windows and quicker segregation, whereas experienced wine tasters seem more influenced by a wine's color in their aroma and flavor judgments than novices are. We argue that the inconsistency arises from a conflation of two formally distinct quantities: the prior probability that concurrent signals arise from a common source, and the coupling between the values of signals that share one. We present a generative model in which both are free parameters, along with channel precision and a decision criterion, that contains causal-inference and coupling-prior models as special cases. The model shows that the correlation between the values of two signals across an environment reflects only the product of the two priors, so that a correlation-tracking learner acquires the coupling when the signals always share a source, whereas separating the two priors requires representing causal structure; that binary common-source reports confound the common-cause prior with the decision criterion; that the coupling trades off against the measurement noise of the influencing channel unless its precision is measured independently; and that the two priors leave distinct signatures in how cross-modal influence varies with disparity. When the source is fixed, as for the color and odor of a wine, tighter coupling alone produces the conjunction of greater displacement by color and better discrimination between wines reported for experienced tasters, which no change in odor precision can produce. Simulations of a test battery combining continuous estimates, common-source reports and discrimination thresholds show that the parameters can be recovered, that a within-subject dissociation can be detected with conventional sample sizes under illustrative effect sizes, and that recovery fails in certain cases. The account yields a rule classifying environments by their base rate of common causation and their coupling strength, and the same ambiguity attends claims about altered multisensory processing in autism and aging. We also show that the most cited demonstration of expert susceptibility to color contains no expertise manipulation, and suggest that apparent expert biases may reflectwind calibration to real-world statistics.
Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is associated with elevated rates of anxiety and depression, as well as reduced quality of life, yet the mechanisms linking motor difficulties to these outcomes remain incompletely specified. This article presents and critically evaluates the Integrated Stress-Adaptation Framework for DCD (ISAF-DCD), which synthesizes empirical findings on DCD with established stress theories, including the Environmental Stress Hypothesis, the transactional model of stress, and the Conservation of Resources model. Although the framework is presented with reference to comorbid neurodevelopmental conditions broadly, its evidential basis and worked examples concentrate specifically on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD); generalization to other neurodevelopmental conditions is plausible but has not been evaluated here. ISAF-DCD proposes that motor coordination difficulties influence mental, cognitive, and physical health through interacting environmental demands, primary and secondary stressors, appraisal and response processes, and personal and social factors. The framework is bidirectional and developmentally sensitive, allowing outcomes to feed back into subsequent stress and adaptation processes across the lifespan. I examine the model’s conceptual coherence, empirical support, and potential clinical utility, arguing that ISAF-DCD offers a theoretically grounded heuristic for organizing a fragmented literature while remaining provisional. Its proposed contributions include clarifying the multiple roles of resilience and social support, refining the classification of environmental demands, incorporating neurodevelopmental comorbidity as a cross-cutting factor, and representing reciprocal relationships between stress and motor functioning. To improve falsifiability, I specify the temporal and functional roles of key dual-role constructs and derive five core, empirically distinguishable propositions that differentiate ISAF-DCD from an expanded Environmental Stress Hypothesis. Direct empirical support for some components, particularly the proposed corticolimbic mechanisms, remains limited. ISAF-DCD should therefore be treated as a hypothesis-generating framework, focused primarily on ADHD and ASD as comorbid conditions and on mental health as its central but not exclusive outcome domain, that requires rigorous longitudinal and intervention-based evaluation.
Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is widely regarded as an emerging eating disorder although it is not currently recognised as a formal diagnosis. It is characterised by a strict adherence to “pure” eating which becomes excessive and can lead to nutritional deficiencies, psychological distress, and impaired daily functioning. Restrictive eating behaviour in ON shows overlap with Restricted Repetitive Behaviours (RRBs) observed in autism. However, the conceptual relationship between ON and autism remains underexplored. This perspective article synthesises existing literature to explore potential overlapping and diverging mechanisms of RRBs across ON and autism. Intolerance for Uncertainty is highlighted as a possible shared mechanism that may contribute to RRBs observed in both ON and autism, whereas Cognitive Inflexibility and Perfectionism may mechanistically differentiate the conditions. We consider that autistic RRBs reflect neurodevelopmental divergence, whereas orthorexic RRBs may be influenced by evaluative belief-centred cognitions. We propose a conceptual model outlining how cognitive, affective and functional factors may interact to produce and maintain RRBs. Clarifying these distinctions is important in supporting clinicians to appropriately consider the drivers and mechanisms underlying RRBs across ON and autism, therefore supporting accurate diagnosis, formulation and treatment.
This study addresses the process of symbolic grief experienced by mothers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), considering psychological vulnerability and resilience in the face of the deconstruction of the image of the idealized child. It is based on the understanding that an ASD diagnosis may disrupt expectations developed throughout pregnancy regarding the child’s development and future, thereby affecting the maternal experience. The general objective is to analyze the process of symbolic grief experienced by mothers of children with ASD, integrating psychological vulnerability, resilience, and support networks. Specifically, the study seeks to identify factors of psychological vulnerability resulting from maternal overload; discuss the impact of symbolic grief on atypical motherhood; and evaluate the role of support networks and public policies in promoting these women’s mental health. This is a narrative literature review of a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory nature, conducted using the BVS-Psi and SciELO databases. The results indicate that a diagnosis may trigger psychological distress, frustration, guilt, fear, and emotional overload, contributing to social isolation and mental health problems. However, psychological support, family and community assistance as part of a support network, and effective public policies contribute to strengthening resilience and reframing the experience of atypical motherhood. It is concluded that understanding the impact of symbolic grief on these mothers is essential to broadening the perspective of psychology and public policies regarding their socio-emotional needs, promoting comprehensive care and strengthening mental health.
Mental health conditions have become one of the most urgent public health challenges worldwide, affecting nearly one billion people and creating substantial social and economic burdens. Despite increasing demand for psychological services, barriers such as financial costs, shortages of mental health professionals, geographical inequalities, and social stigma prevent many individuals from receiving timely support. This paper examines the biological, psychological, and environmental factors contributing to mental disorders and evaluates the potential role of artificial intelligence (AI) conversational models in mental health support. It argues that AI cannot replace licensed clinicians but can serve as a complementary tool by improving accessibility, providing continuous communication, offering privacy, and delivering personalized psychoeducation. Particular attention is given to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), where AI's predictable communication style may support communication practice and reduce social pressure. The paper also discusses AI-assisted interventions based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and examines ethical challenges, including privacy, algorithmic bias, and clinical responsibility. Overall, responsible cooperation between AI technologies and healthcare professionals may improve the accessibility and effectiveness of future mental healthcare.
This research analyzes the implementation of a gamification strategy as a methodological framework for delivering curricular content in a sixth-grade primary education class over the course of a full academic year. The study aimed to understand how the integration of game-based elements fosters motivation, participation, collaborative work, and learning processes within an inclusive environment. The research employed a qualitative approach through a case study involving twenty-two students, including one student with a developmental language disorder, one with dyslexia, and one with autism spectrum disorder (level 2). Data were collected through participant observation, checklists, rubrics, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires administered to students and families, and an analysis of the work produced during learning projects. The strategy involved organizing content from four formative domains into thematic "worlds" and "islands," while incorporating avatars, badges, and an experience point (XP) system that recognized both individual and collective effort and progress. The findings indicate a significant increase in active student participation, improved attendance, greater peer collaboration, heightened engagement with school activities, and a positive perception among families regarding the students' learning and emotional well-being. It is concluded that gamification when grounded in the principles of neurodidactics, formative assessment, and educational inclusion serves as a methodological strategy capable of fostering learning environments that are motivating, equitable, and focused on the holistic development of students.
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) has developed an effective technology of reinforcement delivery, including Discrete Trial Training, Natural Environment Teaching, and token economies, largely on functional-behavioral grounds. Computational neuroscience has independently produced formal accounts of reinforcement learning centered on prediction errors and credit assignment. I propose a testable hypothesis connecting the two: the effectiveness of a reinforcement procedure depends on the quality of the learning signal that its delivery produces on each occasion, a property I term Reward Prediction-Error Fidelity (RPE Fidelity). The property is decomposed into four dimensions, temporal credit, contingency, prediction, and outcome value, each corresponding to a construct long studied in behavior analysis. Formalized within an actor-critic model with eligibility traces, the four dimensions enter the learning update multiplicatively, which implies that they cannot compensate for one another and that the effect of each depends on the others and on the learner’s history. The combination rule distinguishes the hypothesis from the separate behavioral constructs it draws on, and its dependence on learning history distinguishes it from steady-state quantitative models of reinforcement. I situate the hypothesis within an integrative framework, discuss its application to autistic learners, including differences in reward processing and volatility estimation and the role of learner assent, and compare it with procedural fidelity, quantitative behavioral theory, and alternative learning models, including attentional, timescale-invariant, successor-representation, and Bayesian accounts. I derive nine predictions, specifying for each the result that would favor the hypothesis and the result that would favor its strongest competitor, and outline a staged research programme compatible with single-case experimental designs.
Developmental dyslexia (DD) impacts learning achievement and psychosocial development and is associated with various environmental factors and also genetic factors. Here, we conducted a multi-center case-control study by screening 29,820 primary school students between 2–6 grades in four cities in China and enrolled 948 dyslexia cases who meet the criteria of dyslexia and 948 controls with matching age and sex. We comprehensively investigated the environmental factors using the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning model and Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) algorithm. The most important risk factors in dyslexia are the proactive learning habit, the age of child’s literacy, maternal education level, out-migrant workers, and prolonged screen exposure during pregnancy. The home literacy environment accounted for most of the variance within both groups. Then we examined shared polygenic risks between DD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder using polygenic risk score (PRS) analyses. The results showed that the highest PRS DD quartile had a 2.13-fold risk than the lowest quartile with risk factors adjusted (95% CI: 1.08, 4.18). The individuals with the highest PRS ASD quartile and PRS SCZ quartile (OR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.14, 3.98 and OR: 2.41; 95% CI: 1.23, 4.72) were associated with increasing dyslexia risks. This study identified the importance of screening personalized environmental factors among dyslexia and highlighted the shared genetic architecture between dyslexia and other disorders. These findings offered novel insight into the etiology of dyslexia, contributing to the advancement of early prevention strategies.

PURPOSE: Research on coping and parental well-being among Asian parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) remains limited. This study examined parenting stress, coping strategies, and psychological well-being among Chinese parents in Hong Kong raising children with ASD, compared to parents of typically developing (TD) children. METHODS: A total of 92 Chinese parents in Hong Kong participated in the survey, including 42 parents of children with ASD. Standardized measures were used to assess parenting stress, coping, and psychological well-being. RESULTS: Findings revealed that Chinese parents of children with ASD experienced significantly higher levels of parenting stress, anxiety and depression compared to parents of TD children. They reported using a broad range of coping strategies, including problem-focused, emotion-focused and dysfunctional coping. Subgroup analyses based on educational attainment and household income revealed that elevated parenting stress was consistent across all education levels. Notably, parents at both the highest and lowest ends of each category of education and income reported poorer psychological well-being. Differences in coping strategies between ASD and TD groups were generally not significant, except among parents with mid-range levels of household income and education. CONCLUSION: These findings highlight the urgent need to address parenting stress and psychological well-being among Chinese parents in Hong Kong raising children with ASD, irrespective of socioeconomic background. By situating the study within the Hong Kong cultural context, the research underscores the importance of culturally specific support interventions tailored to the diverse challenges faced by families and extends the broader literature.
High machine-learning accuracy in classifying ADHD-related writing does not necessarily establish an ADHD-specific linguistic phenotype, as predictions may reflect diagnostic vocabulary, medication references, or community-specific topics rather than cognitive organization. This study evaluated an interpretable cognitive-congestion language profile (LCCI) and a negative-signature framework for detecting disorder-specific linguistic distinctiveness. A dataset of 25,000 Reddit-derived posts from ADHD, OCD, depression, PTSD, and Asperger/autism-related communities was analyzed using condition-name masking and author-grouped cross-validation. Twenty-five features measuring discourse structure, uncertainty, urgency, lexical diversity, and coherence were compared with TF-IDF classification. The equal-weight LCCI composite performed near chance (ROC-AUC 0.506), while the multivariable profile achieved ROC-AUC 0.654, increasing to 0.681 with learned weights. Individual feature differences were small. TF-IDF substantially outperformed LCCI (ROC-AUC 0.940), with negligible improvement from combining them. An audit classified 59 of 60 high-weight TF-IDF coefficients (98.3%) as topic-related, without quantifying their contribution to predictive performance. To test specificity independently of supervised classification, the negative-signature framework excluded each psychiatric community in turn, constructed a reference language manifold from the remaining communities, and measured residual distinctiveness using PCA reconstruction, shrinkage Mahalanobis distance, and isolation forest. ADHD exhibited no positive residual signal (ROC-AUC 0.451, 0.419, and 0.429, respectively), while OCD showed the greatest residual separability. These findings distinguish predictive discrimination, interpretable linguistic association, and disorder specificity. The principal contribution is a reproducible, generalizable falsification framework demonstrating that strong supervised classification does not establish an ADHD-specific linguistic phenotype and providing a means to evaluate candidate linguistic biomarkers before clinical translation.
This research is motivated by the need for inclusive schools to provide Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning that accommodates the diverse characteristics of students, including students with autism as children with special needs. PAI learning for autistic students requires strategies tailored to their communication abilities, concentration, behavior, social interaction, and pace of understanding. This study aims to analyze PAI teachers’ learning strategies for autistic students, examine their implications for students’ learning outcomes and development, and identify supporting and inhibiting factors in their implementation at SDN Mentikan 1 Mojokerto City. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving the principal, PAI teacher, Special Education Assistant Teacher (GPK), and other parties involved in inclusive education. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data validity was strengthened through source and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that PAI learning strategies were developed through coordination among the school, PAI teacher, GPK, and parents, supported by curriculum modifications and initial assessments to identify students’ characteristics and needs. The learning process emphasized individualized approaches, verbal stimulation to focus attention, simple and gradual instructions, repetition, hands-on practice, the use of concrete media and videos, and educational games. These strategies had positive implications for students’ engagement in learning, understanding of basic PAI concepts, habituation of prayers, ablution, prayer practices, and moral values, as well as behavioral, emotional, and social interaction development. Supporting factors included teacher competence, the role of the GPK, support from the principal and parents, facilities and infrastructure, and the suitability of methods and media. Inhibiting factors included diverse autism characteristics, communication barriers, unstable concentration and behavior, difficulties in social interaction, limited support personnel, and limited learning time.

Excoriation disorder, also known as dermatillomania or skin-picking disorder, is characterized by recurrent, compulsive skin picking that leads to tissue damage, infection risk, pigmentary changes, and psychosocial impairment. While it is classified under the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), research suggests a potential overlap with neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly autism spectrum disorder (ASD).In individuals with autism, skin-picking behaviors may be underrecognized or misattributed to atypical sensory processing or repetitive behaviors, creating significant diagnostic challenges.Because dermatologists are often the first to observe chronic excoriations, scarring, and infections, recognition of possible comorbidity with ASD is critical for timely referral and intervention. This literature review synthesizes current evidence on the overlap between excoriation disorder and ASD, including behavioral, sensory, and cutaneous contributors. It also highlights challenges in recognition and diagnosis, as skin-picking may be misattributed to autism itself and recognition is further complicated by communication barriers.Standard treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacologic agents often require autism-informed adaptation to account for sensory sensitivities, communication styles, and repetitive behavior profiles.Greater recognition of excoriation disorder within the context of ASD may help guide more effective, multidisciplinary care while ultimately improving patient outcomes.
Background Autistic children commonly experience internalising disorders, such as depression and anxiety disorders, that significantly impact child and parent quality of life. Parents play an important role in supporting their child’s mental health and reducing their risk of internalising disorders. Parental self-efficacy (PSE), that is parent’s confidence to engage in preventive parenting practices, is a key factor in this role. To measure domain-specific PSE to reduce internalising problems in autistic children, we developed and initially assessed the psychometric properties of the 14-item Parental Self-Efficacy Scale - Autism version (PSES-Autism) and identified parent-reported contributing factors to PSE. Methods A sample of 123 parents of autistic children aged 5–12 completed the PSES-Autism, as well as measures of parenting practices, parent mental health, child psychosocial functioning, and general PSE. Results The PSES-Autism demonstrated good internal consistency reliability, construct validity, and test-retest reliability. Higher PSES-Autism total scores were associated with increased preventive parenting practices and better parent mental health and general PSE in parents of autistic children, but were not associated with child psychosocial functioning. Contributors to PSE, as reported by parents, included support from family and friends, parental mental health, and the child’s care team. Conclusions The PSES-Autism has clinical and research utility as a measure of PSE to reduce internalising problems in autistic children. The present study provides insight into the factors related to PSE in parents of autistic children, highlighting potential targets for interventions to better support parents.
ABSTRACT Background Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is increasingly recognized as a complex paediatric feeding and eating disorder associated with significant medical and psychiatric burden. Methods This systematic review and meta‐analysis followed PRISMA guidelines and was prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251241490). PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched. Observational and clinical studies reporting medical and/or psychiatric comorbidities in paediatric ARFID samples were included. Random‐effects models generated pooled prevalence estimates; heterogeneity, publication bias, and evidence certainty were evaluated using I 2 , Egger's test, and GRADE, respectively. Results Eighty‐four studies met inclusion criteria. Gastrointestinal disorders (30%; 95% CI: 21%–42%) and nutritional deficiencies (32%; 95% CI: 23%–42%) were the most prevalent medical comorbidities. Food allergies were present in 15% (95% CI: 9%–23%). Among psychiatric conditions, anxiety disorders were most common (44%; 95% CI: 39%–49%), followed by depression (18%; 95% CI: 15%–21%), autism spectrum disorder (19%; 95% CI: 15%–24%), attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (15%; 95% CI: 13%–18%), and obsessive–compulsive disorder (11%; 95% CI: 9%–13%). Heterogeneity was high across outcomes ( I 2 ≥ 75%). Publication bias was detected for anxiety, depression, and nutritional deficiencies. Overall certainty of evidence ranged from very low to low. Conclusions Paediatric ARFID is associated with substantial medical and psychiatric comorbidity, particularly anxiety and neurodevelopmental conditions. Findings support comprehensive, multidisciplinary assessment and developmentally informed interventions. Further high‐quality, population‐based studies are needed to reduce heterogeneity and strengthen evidence certainty.
پایگاههای PsycINFO، PubMed، Scopus و Web of Science جستوجو شدند.
Background and Objective Sleep problems are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and may contribute to behavioural difficulties. In this study, sleep problems were examined to determine whether they predict behavioural symptoms independently of autism severity. Methods This retrospective study included children with ASD followed at a child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic. Sleep problems were assessed using the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), autism related behavioural symptoms using the Krug’s Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), and autism severity using the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Multiple linear regression and correlation analyses were performed. Results Significant differences were observed between ASD severity groups in ABC sensory, relating, and total scores (all p<0.05). CARS scores were positively correlated with CSHQ total scores (r=0.243, p=0.018). CSHQ total scores were also positively correlated with ABC subscale scores (all p<0.05). In hierarchical regression analyses, autism severity significantly predicted behavioural symptoms in the first model (β=0.426, p<0.001). After adding CSHQ total scores, both autism severity (β=0.385, p<0.001) and sleep problems (β=0.354, p=0.001) remained significant predictors of behavioural symptoms. Conclusions Sleep problems were associated with both autism severity and behavioural symptoms in children with ASD. Furthermore, sleep disturbances remained an independent predictor of behavioural symptoms after controlling for autism severity. In children with ASD, identifying and addressing sleep problems may be important.
Abstract Social withdrawal in late childhood and adolescence is linked to long-term developmental challenges, yet its unique impact on adult adaptive functioning remains understudied. This TRAILS study ( N = 1,798 in the population cohort, M ( SD ) age at T1: 11.1 (0.6), 49% boys, 86.5% ethnically Dutch, M ( SD ) age at T7: 28.9 (0.6); N = 405 in the high-risk cohort, M ( SD ) age at T1: 11.1 (0.5), 66% boys, 97.6% ethnically Dutch, M ( SD ) age at T7: 29.6 (0.7)) examined whether social withdrawal during the ages of 11 to 16 predicted the achievement of developmental milestones by age 29, including romantic competence, residential autonomy, friendship satisfaction, work competence, and financial competence. Higher levels of social withdrawal consistently predicted lower likelihood of having achieved these milestones by age 29 (median OR = 0.76 in both cohorts), even after controlling for peer victimization, cognitive abilities, and family background measured in early adolescence. These effects were consistent across cohorts and gender. Sensitivity analyses that accounted for genetic confounding and clinical conditions (e.g., autism, depression) further supported the findings. These results highlight social withdrawal as a critical risk factor for developmental disadvantages, urging early interventions to foster social engagement and mitigate long-term maladjustment.
Children with autism spectrum disorder may experience developmental difficulties in the areas of social communication and interaction. This study aims to investigate the effect of child-centered play therapy on the development of social communication skills in children with autism spectrum disorder. The study group consists of children aged 3-6 years with autism spectrum disorder. A quasi-experimental design was employed for the study. In the experimental group, child-centered play therapy was applied to 5 children with autism spectrum disorder for 15 weeks, 3 sessions per week, for a total of 45 sessions. ‘Social Communication Checklist-Revised for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder’ and the “Denver-II Developmental Screening Test” were used as instruments for data collection. According to the findings of the study, the Mann–Whitney U test conducted on the post-test scores of the experimental and control groups revealed statistically significant differences in all sub-dimensions of the Social Communication Checklist. Significant differences were found between the groups in social participation (Z = −2.627, p < .05, r = .83), expressive language (Z = −2.617, p ≤ .05, r = .83), receptive language (Z = −2.739, p < .05, r = .87), and imitative play (Z = −2.643, p < .05, r = .84). Regarding the Denver II Developmental Screening Test, a statistically significant difference was also found between the groups in the personal-social subscale (Z = −2.730, p < .05, r = .86). However, no statistically significant difference was observed in the language development subscale (Z = −1.586, p > .05). The results revealed that child-centered play therapy has a significant effect on the development of social communication skills in children with autism spectrum disorder. Research findings show that child-centred play therapy brings about significant improvements in the social communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorder. The progress observed in the experimental group supports the idea that play-based approaches can be an effective tool in early intervention programmes.
Social interaction requires the integration of information about self, other, and shared context. One of the proposed mechanisms supporting this coordination is interbrain synchrony – correlated neural activity between interacting individuals – yet its role in shaping social behavior remains unresolved. Here, we show that theta band synchrony in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is closely linked to social interaction in mice and often precedes its onset. In male Shank2 mutant mice, a genetic model of social dysfunction, mPFC interbrain synchrony was diminished, along with a reduced population of mPFC neurons encoding multiple dimensions of social information. Optogenetic entrainment of theta synchrony was accompanied by increased interbrain coupling and social interaction in male Shank2-/- and Tbr1+/K228E mutant mice, two well-established genetic models of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These findings identify prefrontal theta synchrony as a neural substrate that supports social behavior and provide a framework for understanding how coordinated neural activity across brains contributes to social interaction. Brain rhythms of interacting mice become synchronized, but this coordination is reduced in mouse models of autism. Here the authors show that theta-frequency stimulation is accompanied by increased interbrain synchrony and social interaction.
This study examined the challenges faced by refugee parents caring for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Twenty-two parents participated in a mixed-methods study that included surveys and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed significant challenges, including reduced parental well-being, increased family strain, and limited access to specialized support services. Parental satisfaction with caregiving was correlated with the perceived severity of autism symptoms. Thematic analysis of interviews identified five key domains of challenges: institutional, personal, financial, family, and social. Family cohesion and presence of dependents emerged as protective factors mitigating the negative impacts of displacement. The study concludes that refugee parents caring for children with autism require comprehensive support, including specialized healthcare, psychological support, and financial assistance. The findings are discussed within the broader context of developmental disabilities in humanitarian settings, highlighting both shared challenges and autism-specific needs.
