Inclusion is a movement that arises from the socio-historical-cultural perception of exclusion and requires strategies to mitigate or eliminate the various barriers that restrict or prevent social participation. The inclusion movement, which gained strength from the end of the 20th century, applies to different social spheres, including literature as a human experience. In this sense, this art form should be addressed in schools from childhood, ensuring both accessibility and the representation of the diversity of cultures, bodies, and subjectivities. This article aims to discuss literary literacy from an inclusive approach, reflecting on its contribution to the development of reading and citizenship. Thus, it uses a bibliographic research methodology, starting from a systematic review of the terms inclusive literature, inclusive children's literature, inclusive young adult literature and accessible literature in the main academic research databases, and then expanded, in an exploratory manner, to related topics. The study focused on understanding what characterizes inclusive literature, considering heterogeneity in theme and/or authorship, as well as access to and accessibility of the book as a cultural object. Additionally, it aimed, through the example of an accessible teaching sequence based on Indigenous literature, to show the applicability of this approach, highlighting the school's role in shaping readers who are more aware and respectful of human diversity. Consequently, the work contributes by showing that inclusive literature, from the perspective of literary literacy, enriches the reading experience by expanding student development through both the aesthetic enjoyment of the work and the formation of civic awareness.
Background Rooted in positive psychology, human flourishing scholarship focuses on the presence of health and wellbeing beyond the absence of illness. Contemporary flourishing research has increasingly expanded its focus beyond individuals to larger systems, including families. Family flourishing is an emerging concept with limited clarity in its conceptualizations and measurements. This scoping review synthesized existing literature on the unit-level conceptualizations and operationalizations of family flourishing and wellbeing and examined the extent to which existing measures align with contemporary understandings of human flourishing. Methods Arksey and O'Malley's methodology and the PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines were followed. Searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO, Social Work Abstracts, Academic Search Premier, and Web of Science. Eligible studies presented explicit unit-level conceptualizations or quantitative measures of family flourishing or wellbeing as a multidimensional construct. Only studies written in English and published since 2000 were included. Title and abstract screening, full-text screening, and data extraction were conducted by two independent researchers, while monitoring inter-coder reliability. Discrepancies were resolved through consensus in consultation with the PI. Data extraction utilized a standardized form for consistency, which was iteratively revised through discussion. Results The final sample included 13 studies, which represented diverse regions, including China, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and the United States. Studies were published between 2005 and 2025, with most studies published since 2020. Seven quantitative measures of family wellbeing were identified while no family flourishing measures were found. Conceptualizations represented diverse roots including Aristotelian eudaimonia, Indigenous cultural beliefs, and local spiritual teachings. While boundaries were often unclear, six broad categories of conceptualizations were identified, including relational/functional. eudaimonic/existential, hedonic/emotional, social/community, socioeconomic/environmental, and spiritual/religious domains. Relational/functional domains were most frequently covered while spiritual/religious domains were least frequently covered by existing measures. Most measures were developed more than a decade ago, and psychometric evidence beyond internal consistency was limited. Conclusion Family flourishing is an underdeveloped but promising area of scholarship. Further studies are needed to achieve greater conceptual clarity and to develop culturally responsive and psychometrically robust measures. The concept of the human person occupies a central position in philosophical anthropology because it raises fundamental questions concerning identity, individuality, relationality, community, moral responsibility, and the meaning of human existence. In Igbo philosophical thought, the person is commonly understood not as an isolated, self-sufficient entity but as one whose existence is embedded in a network of relationships involving the individual, family, community, the spiritual order, and the wider cosmos. This paper examines the concept of the human person in Igbo philosophy through the complementary ontology of Innocent I. Asouzu, particularly his philosophy of Ibuanyidanda and the method of complementary reflection. Rather than presenting Ibuanyidanda as Asouzu’s original, complete theory of philosophical anthropology, the paper develops an anthropological application of his complementary ontology to the question of personhood. It argues that Asouzu’s emphasis on the mutual dependence and non-exclusivity of realities provides resources for reconceptualizing the human person as an existence constituted through complementarity, while preserving personal identity and agency. This study therefore uses the expression “being-in-complementarity” as an interpretive formulation for articulating the anthropological implications of Asouzu’s complementary ontology, rather than assuming it without qualification as a technical equivalent of Heidegger’s being-in-the-world or Mitsein. The paper further examines whether the transcendence associated with Asouzu’s ontology should be identified straightforwardly with indigenous Igbo conceptions of Chukwu, chi, ancestors, and other spiritual realities, or understood as a philosophical reconstruction shaped partly by his Christian and Western philosophical formation. The paper thus proposes Ibuanyidanda as a promising framework for reconstructing Igbo philosophical anthropology while acknowledging the interpretive and philosophical work involved in extending Asouzu’s ontology to personhood.
In modern scholarly perspectives on grieving, being saddened has been associated with bodily experience. Numbness, shaking, a heavy heart, and other physical symptoms are caused by the intense pain of loss. Most Western philosophies have increasingly focused on psychological models based on the idea of how the self adjusts to the devastating experience of losing a loved one, and this has received a lot of attention. To connect death, embodiment, self-identification, and psychological well-being, this conceptual article develops a mourning process from an Indigenous psychological perspective. This article proposes a psychological paradigm grounded in Indigenous contemplative knowledge through an interpretive analysis of the teachings of the Ashtavakra Gita. Rather than treating the Ashtavakra Gita solely as a philosophical or spiritual text, this article interprets it as an Indigenous psychological knowledge system offering culturally grounded insights into selfhood, attachment, suffering, and psychological well-being. The proposed Ashtavakra Witnessing Consciousness Model conceptualises grief as a five-stage, non-linear process involving embodied grief, existential crisis, meaning reframing, mortality acceptance, and witnessing consciousness, culminating in psychological well-being. This model shows how a traumatic incident can be transformed into a meaningful experience and a path to psychological well-being. Advaita Vedanta’s foundational text, the Ashtavakra Gita, presents a nondual viewpoint in which suffering arises from attachment to the body, ego, and interpersonal attachments. It distinguishes between witnessing consciousness and the short-lived embodied self. This psychological Model of Witnessing Consciousness offers an alternative understanding of control, attachment, suffering, and embodied grief, grounded in the Ashtavakra Gita. It highlights the psychological implications of developing the art of witnessing consciousness. This indigenous model of traditional knowledge has implications for existential, contemplative, and meaning-centred mourning therapies and adds a cross-cultural, psychological and philosophically informed perspective to bereavement research. The article explains how the five stages were derived from the text, illustrates the model with a composite case vignette, outlines clinical cautions against encouraging detachment prematurely, and sets out the model’s limitations and directions for empirical validation.
Education in Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa State, faces persistent vulnerability to environmental, infrastructural and socio-economic shocks-annual floods, riverine isolation, poor school infrastructure, and weak community ownership-leading to disrupted learning continuity and low retention. The paper contends that resilient education extends beyond the confine of a school-centric model and requires a robust, strengthened learning ecosystem. Through an integrative review of literature and the theoretical synthesis of Bronfenbrenner, Ecological System Theory, Epstein, Overlapping Spheres of Influence, and Resilient Theory, conceptualized as Yenagoa Resilient Learning Ecosystem Model (YRLEM). The model places the learner at the Centre of six interconnected pillars/layers: Immediate Learning Environment/Resilient learner: (1) Community Engagement Pillar, (2) Technology and Digital Access Pillar, (3) Environment and Climate Resilience Pillars (4) Infrastructure and Schools Pillars (5) Governance and Policy Pillars (6) Livelihood and Skills Pillars. It argues that by intentionally engaging indigenous institutions-traditional rulers, CDCs, women and youth groups, and SBMCs-and fostering structured multi-stakeholder collaboration between government, oil and gas companies, tertiary institutions, NGOs, and faith based-organizations, educations can be transformed from a fragile service into a community owned resilient system. The paper contributes a context-specific framework for policymakers, the Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board, and development partners, and advances propositions for future empirical validation in the Niger delta context
Empathy toward animals plays an important role in developing children’s positive attitudes toward animals. However, validated educational modules and culturally appropriate assessment tools for Indonesian elementary school students are still limited. This research comprised two sequential studies. Study 1 focused on developing and validating the Empathy for Animals Module and adapting the Animal Attitude Scale-10 (AAS-10) for Indonesian upper elementary students. Study 2 examined the module’s preliminary effectiveness in improving students’ attitudes toward animals. Study 1 included expert content validation, readability testing, cross-cultural adaptation of the AAS-10, confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability testing. Study 2 used a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control group design with 46 fourth-grade students assigned to experimental and control groups. In Study 1, the module showed strong content validity, with Aiken’s V values ranging from 0.82 to 0.92, and excellent readability, with an FVI of 0.90. The adapted AAS-10 maintained a one-factor structure and demonstrated good internal consistency, with Cronbach’s α = 0.870. In Study 2, the experimental group’s mean attitude score increased from 33.42 to 37.42, while the control group showed no significant improvement. Gain score analysis indicated a significant difference between the groups (p = 0.032), suggesting that the module was effective in enhancing students’ attitudes toward animals. The Empathy for Animals Module and the adapted Animal Attitude Scale-10 (AAS-10) showed satisfactory psychometric properties and are appropriate for Indonesian upper elementary school students. The module also demonstrated preliminary effectiveness in improving students’ attitudes toward animals.
Abstract Amid growing calls for Australian universities to engage meaningfully with Indigenous knowledges, this article examines how Indigenous-led, place-based inquiry can reorient academic practice toward culturally regenerative possibilities. Drawing on a Cooperative Inquiry conducted with Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar, we follow six Noongar-led experiences involving Country, language, ceremony, deep time, embodiment and more-than-human relations. Through cycles of experiential, presentational and reflective practice, these engagements restructured attention, temporality and conduct, foregrounding relational ethics of permission, reciprocity and refusal. Multimodal forms including movement, image and creative response were treated as epistemic practices, enabling us to register affective and relational reorientations that are not readily accessible through propositional forms alone. Our analysis traces how these reorientations unsettled extractive research habits and repositioned knowledge-making as embodied, participatory and accountable to Country. We argue that culturally regenerative university practice does not emerge through policy statements, curricular add-ons or inclusion alone, but through lived, relational engagements that reconfigure how knowledge is generated, held and shared. The study contributes empirical insight into how such reconfigurations unfold in practice and highlights the institutional conditions required to sustain accountable relationships with place.
Despite the growing literature on first-generation students, limited research has examined how intersecting socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and institutional barriers shape the higher education experiences of first-generation Sama Indigenous students in Tawi-Tawi, Philippines. Thus, this study investigated the socioeconomic challenges encountered by first-generation Indigenous Sama students pursuing higher education in Tawi-Tawi and examined how these challenges affect their academic performance and overall well-being. A qualitative case study design was employed. Seven fourth-year first-generation Sama undergraduate students enrolled in higher education institution in Tawi-Tawi were selected through purposive sampling based on ethnicity, first-generation status, final-year enrollment, and residency. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews lasting 45–58 minutes, audio-recorded with consent, transcribed, cleaned, and analyzed using a four-stage thematic coding process: initial coding, frequency count, categorization, and theme development. Addressing this gap, the study found four major challenges : financial and economic struggles, including poverty, job anxiety, and lack of scholarship support; academic and institutional challenges, such as heavy workloads, teacher-centered instruction, and literacy gaps; social and cultural factors, including language barriers, discrimination, and social comparison; and family and socioeconomic conditions, such as parental loss, limited income, and unstable housing. Impacts included spiritual and emotional strength as the primary coping mechanism, time-management struggles, career aspirations, health decline, and mental health strain. The findings underscore the need for targeted financial assistance, culturally responsive academic support, inclusive teacher training, and stronger collaboration among educational institutions, government agencies, and community leaders to improve retention, academic success, and well-being among first-generation Indigenous students in marginalized island communities.
Global Citizenship Education (GCE) faces a persistent challenge: preparing children to engage with an interconnected world without detaching them from the cultural knowledge, identities, and communities that shape their lives. Indigenous storytelling offers a culturally grounded means of connecting these local foundations with broader civic responsibilities, yet its underlying learning mechanisms and sensitivity to educational context remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated how Indigenous storytelling relates to global citizenship competencies and whether these relationships differ between urban and rural primary schools. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design involved 500 Grade 5–6 students from ten public primary schools (five urban and five rural). Quantitative relationships were examined using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), Measurement Invariance of Composite Models (MICOM), and Partial Least Squares Multi-Group Analysis (PLS-MGA). Semi-structured interviews and classroom observations with purposively selected students, teachers, and principals were subsequently analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis. Both strands were integrated using joint displays and meta-inference. All hypothesized structural relationships were significant ( p < 0.001), revealing interconnected pathways from cultural authenticity, narrative engagement, community participation, and reflective learning toward global awareness, cultural respect, social responsibility, civic participation, and sustainability awareness. Urban students showed stronger narrative engagement–reflective learning (β = 0.712 vs. 0.618, p = 0.036) and reflective learning–global awareness relationships (β = 0.514 vs. 0.432, p = 0.028). Qualitative evidence explained these differences: rural schools embedded storytelling in community participation and cultural immersion, whereas urban schools relied more on teacher facilitation, collaborative reflection, and technology-supported storytelling. Indigenous storytelling connects cultural rootedness with global responsibility through context-sensitive learning pathways. Rather than positioning local identity and global citizenship as competing educational aims, the findings demonstrate how culturally grounded pedagogy can support reflective, socially responsible, and sustainability-oriented citizenship while requiring different enactment strategies across urban and rural primary education.

Abstract The Baka people, an indigenous forest community in Cameroon's East Region, hold a distinct body of social practices, ecological knowledge, and cultural values shaped by their historical relationship with the forest environment. This study examines the influence of social practices of the Baka people on the implementation of the geography curriculum in schools within the East Region of Cameroon. The study adopted a mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. The target population comprised of Geography teachers and students especially Baka students enrolled in secondary schools in selected Baka community of the East region in the study area. Two instruments were used to collect data which were questionnaires and interview guides. Quantitative data obtained from the questionnaires were coded and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics included frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. These statistics were used to describe the prevalence of particular Baka social practices and participants' perceptions of their influence on Geography curriculum implementation. Inferential analysis was used to examine relationships between selected dimensions of Baka social practices and indicators of curriculum implementation. The findings indicate that Baka social practices have significant implications for curriculum implementation, although their influence should not be understood exclusively in negative terms. Baka livelihood practices, language, cultural values, traditional learning processes and Indigenous environmental knowledge interact with formal schooling in complex ways. Some practices may contribute to irregular attendance or difficulties in adapting to conventional classroom routines, while others provide valuable knowledge and experiences that can enrich Geography education. The study contributes to broader debates on curriculum relevance, indigenous knowledge integration, and educational equity for marginalized populations in Cameroon, and offers recommendations for curriculum policy and teacher training that better reflect the sociocultural realities of indigenous learners. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends that Geography teachers should incorporate local examples into classroom instruction. Lessons on ecosystems, natural resources, agriculture, environmental conservation, settlement and human–environment relationships should make use of geographical features and activities familiar to Baka learners. Teacher-training institutions should strengthen preparation in culturally responsive pedagogy. Curriculum developers should provide greater flexibility for the inclusion of Indigenous and local knowledge. schools should make greater use of experiential learning. Keywords Baka people, social practices, curriculum implementation, geography education, indigenous knowledge, East Region Cameroon

As Tribal Nations explore emerging opportunities in bio-based economies, hemp education offers a meaningful platform for integrating land stewardship, cultural knowledge, community priorities, and workforce development. Yet existing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and agricultural education models rarely provide culturally grounded approaches that integrate Indigenous epistemologies, land-based pedagogy, and sovereignty-centered economic development. This article introduces a conceptual Indigenous land-based curriculum framework for culturally grounded STEM and agricultural education, using hemp education as an applied and relational learning context. Grounded in Indigenous research methodologies and guided by a Two-Eyed Seeing orientation, the framework was developed through qualitative conceptual inquiry and iterative synthesis of scholarship on Indigenous epistemologies, culturally grounded STEM education, land-based learning, and community-centered economic development. Centered on Land, Culture, Voice, and Economics as foundational dimensions of curriculum design, the model is represented through a flower metaphor that emphasizes holistic, experiential, place-based, community-based, and intergenerational learning. Indigenous values of reciprocity, relationality, responsibility, and respect further shape how teaching and learning are enacted within the framework. By articulating a cohesive pedagogical structure that bridges Indigenous knowledge systems, applied STEM learning, and sustainable bio-based economic futures, the article offers a conceptual model for designing culturally grounded curricula, advances scholarship on Indigenous land-based curriculum design, and provides a foundation for future curriculum development and research.
This study examines how Indigenous African leadership philosophies, particularly Ubuntu and participatory governance models, can transform higher education institutions into sites of peace education and epistemic justice. It responds to the enduring marginalisation of Indigenous Knowledge Systems within African universities. A qualitative comparative institutional analysis design, underpinned by document-based research, was adopted. The study analysed 67 institutional documents from universities in Rwanda, South Africa, and Ghana. Rwanda’s post-genocide education reforms served as a critical embedded case. This offered insights into context-driven educational transformation. Eurocentric leadership structures remain deeply embedded across the cases, perpetuating epistemic injustice. Yet pockets of Afrocentric innovation are emerging. For instance, governance restructures in Rwanda incorporate restorative justice principles, gender equity initiatives are evident in South Africa, and curriculum reviews in Ghana propose Indigenous Knowledge Systems integration. Evidence from these institutional documents points to a gradual shift toward locally grounded leadership. Student movements like #RhodesMustFall further reveal how institutional hierarchies are being contested. The study proposes an epistemically just leadership framework, anchored in participatory governance, Ubuntu-informed pedagogy, and restorative policies. By centring Indigenous Knowledge Systems and African philosophical traditions, this research contributes to broader efforts toward epistemic justice, social cohesion, and the transformation of post-colonial institutions. It positions leadership transformation as foundational, not peripheral, to broader decolonisation efforts in African higher education.
Over the past decade, there has been a surge in mental health challenges among adolescents. While social and emotional learning (SEL) programs are positioned to bolster young people's social, emotional, and academic success and mental health, too few SEL programs center adolescent development in the present context, largely ignoring the realities and needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQ2SIA+, and students with disabilities. To fill this gap and need for transformative SEL, we hosted a series of focus groups with fifteen BIPOC middle schoolers to ask what they need to belong and thrive at school, given our belief that the youth most marginalized carry the genius to transform schools for every student. In this paper, we share their insights on how educators can create learning environments that ensure their safety, honor their humanity, cultivate joy, and foster their social, emotional, and academic well-being through transformative SEL and liberatory teaching practices. Youth shared easy-to-implement examples of how educators can nurture relationships with students, create safe and caring classroom environments, humanize education, and advance social justice and civic engagement. Based on what we learned from youth, we urge SEL program developers and educators to start by discovering who young people are and what they need to flourish socially, emotionally, and academically, then to use what students share to inform instructional practice, create and select academic content, guide interactions, and build communities where students feel a sense of trust, belonging, and care.
STEM education often marginalizes rural students by privileging urban-centric engineering standards and forms of technical representation. This study investigates how traditional agricultural knowledge can be translated into engineering design learning through a Culturally Responsive STEM (CR-STEM) approach in rural classrooms. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected from 12 tenth-grade students through classroom observations, design activities, and student-generated artifacts during an engineering project. A six-phase thematic analysis revealed that integrating agricultural knowledge enabled students to transform everyday experiences into functional engineering strategies. Instead of relying on conventional two-dimensional technical drawings, students demonstrated sophisticated problem-solving through direct hands-on experimentation, material adaptation, and the adaptive use of locally available resources. However, the findings also revealed a pedagogical tension stemming from a disconnect between students’ practical skills and formal communication. While students demonstrated strong physical engineering competence during construction, they struggled with formal technical drawing and academic presentation, which constrained their ability to articulate and formalize their design reasoning. These findings suggest that culturally responsive STEM education should support students in translating tacit local expertise into formal engineering representations. The study contributes to discussions on equitable STEM education by proposing alternative approaches to recognizing and assessing rural engineering competencies in culturally diverse learning contexts.
This paper reconceptualises weeds through Australian Indigenous knowledge systems, presenting them not as invasive threats, but as teachers; living beings that offer ecological insight, support restoration, and contribute to cultural renewal and resurgence. Drawing on relational governance theories, the study employs Indigenous methodologies, including yarning with Country and the development of a storying seasonal calendar, to examine the behaviours and teachings of Fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis), African Lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula ), and Lantana (Lantana camara). Through attentive engagement with these plants across the seasons, the research reveals how each species responds to ecological disturbance in ways that reflect deeper patterns of damage, resilience, and adaptation. Fireweed emerges as a guard of soil exhaustion and overgrazing, while African Lovegrass plays a stabilising role in degraded landscapes during ecological transitions, and Lantana offers both refuge and warning through a chemically mediated defence of disturbed ground. These findings unsettle adversarial and militaristic paradigms of weed management and instead highlight the importance of Country-centred, seasonal, and relational approaches. By weaving Indigenous knowledge with ecological observation, the paper demonstrates that weeds are not only invasive but also teachers, whose messages can guide more ethical and restorative forms of environmental governance. • Weeds can be ecological indicators and teachers for landscape governance. • Introduces Weed Seasonal Story Calendars as a place-based methodology. • Challenges conventional eradication models via relational repair frameworks. • Grounds multispecies justice in Indigenous Knowledge Systems.
This participatory action research investigates developing a Community Learning and Innovation Platform (LIP) to drive the grassroots economy and enhance community well-being in Nakhon Sawan Province. Using a qualitative methodology across 10 target sub-districts, the study rigorously collected data from 330 key informants—including community leaders, local scholars, and network partners—through in-depth interviews, focus groups, and participant observation. Content analysis showed that the LIP effectively connects indigenous social capital with modern management practices through participatory learning. This intervention successfully established 12 concrete community economic activities, demonstrably reducing household expenses and increasing local income. Crucially, the platform cultivated 200 "community innovators" equipped to act as change agents, transferring appropriate technologies back into their communities. Furthermore, Local Administrative Organizations shifted from mere implementers to strategic facilitators. Ultimately, this systematic economic mobilization significantly strengthened holistic community well-being across physical, mental, social, and cognitive dimensions, directly contributing to the localized achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Gratitude, one virtue that reflects a person's high moral standards, is a culturally sensitive construct expressed differently across cultural contexts. Definitions and perceptions of gratitude among children may differ from one community to another and from one region of the world to another. This study used a phenomenological design, coupled with the Indigenous standpoint theoretical framework and related participatory methodologies, to understand the virtue of gratitude among children. Conducting a qualitative survey, the authors utilized focus group discussions and key informant interviews to investigate how adolescents and adults from the pastoralist Turkana of northern Kenya and the Amhara of central Ethiopia defined and perceived gratitude in children aged 4–8 years. The authors analyzed the data thematically. The findings indicate that gratitude is defined variously as an innate capacity, an action, an expression of other virtues, and a feeling used to commune with both humans and the spirit world. Thus, gratitude reflects appreciation, thankfulness, and a positive response to acts of generosity or opportunities provided. Participants noted that gratitude manifested in children through their emotional dispositions, social interactions and relationships with others; their moral values; their actions and behaviors; and other positive character virtues. The most frequent recurring theme was defining gratitude as a relational skill used with both people and the spiritual world. These findings have implications for programs that support children developing positive virtues: they should be rooted in local cultural traditions and stress values prioritized by local communities.
Africa is central to the world's future. The continent holds immense human potential, vast natural wealth, and a very young population. Yet, historical trauma from colonialism and ongoing neocolonial practices still hold African nations back. Unfair global financial rules, high borrowing costs, and severe climate impacts create deep systemic barriers. Africa contributes barely 4% of global carbon emissions, yet suffers massive economic losses from climate change. The concept of "Africa Rising" must move beyond simple economic metrics. It requires structural justice, genuine self-directed development, and local academic agency. This special issue grounds these global debates in concrete African realities through eight insightful studies. Their authors offer practical solutions to pressing challenges: curbing conflict through trade and gender inclusion, combining indigenous justice rituals with state law, fighting carbon market fraud, and introducing novel economic models to combat financial exclusion. Other studies advocate for youth civic agency through non-formal education, pharmaceutical sovereignty to lower medicine prices, and reframing forced migration as a driver of regional integration through the African Union's Free Movement Protocol. Recent global governance reforms, such as the African Union joining the G20, now G21, offer a vital platform for procedural justice. However, a seat at the table is not enough on its own. Africa must activate its internal institutions, financial markets, and academic community. As demonstrated by the authors in this collection, local experts provide the essential evidence needed to drive real progress. Only through genuine partnership, ethical global frameworks, and grounded African agency can the continent realise its true development potential.
The South African Open Science Policy 2026, published by the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation, is formally committed to the democratisation of knowledge and epistemic equity. Yet a critical reading reveals that the Policy reproduces, through its own discursive architecture, the epistemological hierarchy it claims to dismantle. This article analyses the Policy as a discursive text, drawing on Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory and Foucault’s concept of the regime of truth to explain how a policy committed to democratisation can simultaneously enact epistemic exclusion. The primary argument is threefold. First, the Policy constructs “Open Science” as a nodal point around which a chain of equivalences is built from STEM-derived norms, including reproducibility, FAIR data principles, journal metrics, and natural science models of citizen science. Second, we argue that this hegemonic articulation reconstitutes a hidden antagonism between positivist and interpretivist epistemological traditions, reawakening a binary opposition that the paradigm wars of the twentieth century had ostensibly resolved. Third, the incommensurability between these traditions means that applying STEM-derived criteria universally to all research constitutes not evaluation but category error institutionalised as governance. Six dimensions of epistemological closure are examined: the reproducibility criterion, the FAIR data mandate, the marginalisation of CARE principles, the protective rather than epistemic treatment of indigenous knowledge, the structural absence of humanistic output forms, and the natural-science-centred design of the citizen science framework and its consequences for participatory research traditions. Five policy interventions are proposed through which the Policy’s stated commitment to epistemic equity could be made operational across the full disciplinary spectrum.
This article applies Syed Farid Alatas’s two-part framework for decolonisation, critique and construction, and considers what it entails for research training and methods pedagogy in the contemporary university. We argue that the first part, critique, must consider diverse epistemic traditions and the material and conceptual conditions through which research reproduces inequalities. The second part, construction, consisting of reconstruction and original construction, requires a discrete set of pedagogical practices, including problem-genealogy and concept-mining tasks for trainee researchers. Reconstruction deals with already established subject-matter, problem statements, theories, concepts and methods, while original construction, demands, among other things, theoretical and conceptual innovation and methodological pluralism in argumentation, including arts-based research and indigenous storywork. We argue that reconstruction and original construction in the curriculum are inseparable from the reconstruction of the institution itself. Moreover, to have impact for teaching, decolonising commitments must be explicitly written into university partnerships, internationalisation policies, and transnational teaching agreements.
This study is an exploration of the cultural and traditional practices of the Atswean-Asi people of Kwambai, a distinct subgroup of the Kuteb ethnic group in Taraba State, Nigeria. It interrogates the continuity and transformation of practices such as child-naming ceremonies, menstrual segregation, male circumcision, and associated taboos in the face of external influences. The main argument is that the interaction between Christianity, modernity, and indigenous practices has led to a lively mix of cultures. This has created a 'Third Space' for expression that helps maintain community identity through Selective Cultural Brokerage. The objective is to historicise and analyse these cultural practices within their socio-political and spiritual frameworks, utilising the Theory of Cultural Hybridity to interpret the data as evidence of active cultural resilience rather than passive reception. The study adopts the historical method, relying on oral traditions, ethnographic observation, and documentary sources. The paper concludes that these traditions are being restructured in a focused way. This gives us a new theoretical idea: Selective Cultural Brokerage. Community leaders work together to manage the rules of cultural continuity, which helps maintain the stability of a new, hybrid communal identity.
