Since the large-scale displacement of Ukrainian families following the escalation of the war in 2022, community- and school-based initiatives have become increasingly important in supporting refugee children's adaptation in host countries. Although play, resilience, and belonging have each been widely recognised as important for children's well-being and development, they have largely been examined within separate strands of scholarship. This theoretical article develops an integrated three-tier framework that brings together Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory, social-ecological resilience theory, and research on play and belonging to explain how displaced children adapt within host-country contexts. The proposed framework conceptualises children's adaptation as a recursive process operating across three interconnected tiers. Tier one situates children within their ecological environments; tier two identifies resilience as a multisystemic process emerging through interactions between children and the protective resources available within those environments; and tier three positions play as the primary mechanism through which resilience processes are enacted, while belonging functions as both an outcome and a reinforcing relational process. The framework is illustrated through the context of Ukrainian refugee children in Estonia and generates empirically testable propositions to guide future research. By integrating ecological context, resilience processes, and play-based relational mechanisms into a single explanatory framework, the article offers a conceptual foundation for understanding children's adaptation following forced displacement and provides implications for the design and evaluation of community- and school-based initiatives supporting displaced children.
Abstract Lifelong learning is important for everyone, individually and collectively within institutions and communities. In today’s “learning society”, learning is not just a process driven by the learning system or the social system; it can also be a process in which the learners play an active role. This article focuses on the Erasmus+ project “Empowerment for migrants, from camps to integration” (CAMPLUS) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). Between 2021 and 2022, personal resources management (PRM) training was implemented in three refugee camps in Erbil. The central question driving the project was whether, and how, PRM can transform refugee learners’ ability to define and pursue their developmental goals. This inquiry is rooted in Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy, which promotes dialogical learning as a means of empowering marginalised learners as agents of their own education. PRM integrates the validation of prior learning (VPL) with personalised pathways, based on the belief that competencies, gained formally, informally or experientially, should be recognised as the foundation for further learning. This approach aligns with Freire’s ideal of critical consciousness, which posits learning as a process of naming, reclaiming and transforming one’s reality. Using a qualitative analysis involving 15 refugees and three trainers, the authors explore how learner agency and institutional affordance combine to create meaningful learning outcomes. The study addresses a key gap in research: how reflective, personalised education can function in settings marked by displacement and limited opportunities.
This article establishes the intersection of psychiatry and refugeedom as an area of historiographical inquiry. It traces how psychoanalysis was refracted through the paradigm of interwar mental hygiene and rescaled to a community level in the post-Second World War refugee camp, thereby contributing to the genesis of postwar international mental health. I examine the career of the Swiss Maria Pfister-Ammende from psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, to director of a refugee psychotherapeutic service in refugee camps in Switzerland, to international mental health expert at the World Health Organization. I situate her attempt at codifying an ‘uprooting neurosis’ within the genealogy of the medicalization of mobility and migration from nostalgia in the late 17th century to trauma in the late 20th. Implications for the historiography of refugee psychiatry and global mental health are considered.
While extensive research has examined refugee students’ educational adaptation in host countries, the educational reintegration phase following voluntary return remains underexplored. This qualitative study investigates the linguistic and academic adaptation experiences of Syrian students transitioning from Turkish-medium education in Türkiye to Arabic-medium schooling in Syria after voluntary return. The study addresses an overarching question: how do returnee students experience the linguistic, academic, social, and psychosocial dimensions of this reverse educational transition? Using an exploratory qualitative design, data were collected through a seven-item open-ended written questionnaire from 15 middle-school students who had received several years of formal schooling in Türkiye. Qualitative content analysis revealed that return does not constitute a simple linguistic recovery, but rather a reverse academic transition characterized by profound difficulties with academic Arabic, conceptual transfer, written production, and in-class assessment practices. The findings indicate that students’ challenges were shaped not only by uneven Arabic literacy development but also by curriculum misalignment, pedagogical practices that participants perceived as more teacher-directed, limited peer interaction, and assessment practices that they perceived as unclear. Furthermore, psychosocial pressures, including re-migration-related distress, concentration difficulties, and increased family responsibilities, complicated their academic adaptation. Ultimately, these struggles reflect systemic institutional and contextual mismatches rather than individual deficits. By conceptualizing return as a distinct educational phase, this study contributes to the broader discourses on refugee education and bilingualism. The implications underscore the critical need for academic Arabic bridging programs, background-sensitive assessment frameworks, psychosocially responsive pedagogies, and school-based psychosocial support to ensure equitable reintegration into Arabic-medium schooling.
Background: Refugee students newly enrolled in U.S. schools encounter academic, socialization, and mental health challenges because of trauma, language barriers, and cultural differences. Many have had limited or interrupted access to formal education in their home country. This study aimed to gain the perspectives of refugee students on their lived experiences and explore the impact of an occupational therapy intervention guided by the Kawa model on the well-being of this student population. Methods: The researchers employed a convergent mixed-methods design. Refugee students (n = 8) created Kawa models, which provided rich, qualitative data. Participants completed pre and posttest surveys. Quantitative data gathered from surveys were used to measure students' understanding of their supports and barriers. Results: All participants demonstrated a 49% positive change in their perceived knowledge of their strengths, challenges, and supports. Qualitative analysis of participants’ Kawa creations revealed multiple collective themes throughout the migration stages of refugee students. Conclusion: This study's findings support existing evidence that culturally sensitive, person-centered interventions, such as one guided by the Kawa model, result in positive outcomes for refugee students. As school districts examine equitable practices for refugee children, occupational therapy support guided by the Kawa model may be a valuable contribution.
Background Refugee youth are at elevated risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health disorders, yet systemic and cultural barriers limit access to care. Scalable, transdiagnostic interventions such as Problem Management Plus (PM+) are promising, but their impact on trauma symptoms is modest. Incorporating brief trauma-focused components may enhance effectiveness. Aims To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of PM+ with an emotional processing module (PM+EP) for refugee youth aged 16–25 years in the Netherlands. Method Refugee youth with elevated psychological distress (K10 > 15) and impaired functioning (World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) > 16) were randomised into PM+EP, PM+ with supportive counselling (PM+SC), or care as usual (CAU). Feasibility and acceptability were assessed via recruitment, adherence, fidelity and qualitative interviews. Psychological distress, PTSD symptoms, functioning and self-identified problems were measured at baseline, post-intervention and follow-up. Registered in Overview of Medical Research in the Netherlands (OMON; Trial ID: NL-OMON56254). Results Fifty-two participants were randomised (PM+EP: n = 17; PM+SC: n = 19; CAU: n = 16). Attendance and fidelity were high, and PM+ interventions were rated as acceptable and culturally appropriate. No significant between-group differences were observed in the primary analyses. Exploratory analyses suggested greater short-term symptom reduction for probable depression in PM+EP versus CAU ( b = –0.79, s.e. = 0.38, p = 0.04). Effect size estimates ranged from small to large across outcomes (Hedges’ g = –0.98 to 0.19). Conclusions PM+ is feasible, acceptable and safe for refugee youth aged 16 years and older. The potential added value of the EP module remains unclear and warrants further investigation. Trial Registration Number The trial was registered in the Dutch clinical trial registration: Overview of Medical Research in the Netherlands (OMON) (Trial ID: NL-OMON56254; https://onderzoekmetmensen.nl/en/trial/56254 ).
Overview of Medical Research in the Netherlands (OMON؛ شمارهی کارآزمایی: NL-OMON56254) ثبت شده است. Overview of Medical Research in the Netherlands (OMON)
ABSTRACT Objective To examine how transnational family life and parent–child co‐agency shape educational decisions among Ukrainian refugee children in Poland. Background Since Russia's full‐scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many Ukrainian families have relocated to Poland, where children navigate educational transitions amid legal, emotional, and educational uncertainty. Little is known about how these decisions are negotiated within transnational families whose members may remain dispersed across borders. Methods This qualitative study draws on interviews with 40 refugee children in the final grades of Polish primary school and 40 parents, conducted as part of the EduMAP research project. Results Parent–child co‐agency was dynamic and often asymmetrical, which is shown within two aspects: gendered parental asymmetry and parent–child asymmetry. Conclusions Educational transitions emerged as negotiated processes of agency and co‐agency within transnational family networks, rather than exclusively parental or child‐led decisions. Implications Schools should support refugee children and parents by providing guidance on recruitment procedures and school options. Family‐oriented support may strengthen children's participation while reducing excessive responsibility and helping mitigate educational inequalities.
Refugee communities across the world have long gathered to connect and support one another during times of crisis, and this has been well-documented. Despite the vast amount of literature pertaining to coping and resiliency among refugee communities, there is limited knowledge about refugee community healing. Approximately one in three refugees experiences depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress that can persist long after displacement. Dominant approaches within Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic (WEIRD) psychologies tend to conceptualize trauma through an individualistic lens, often overlooking social, historical, and collective dimensions of suffering. This can result in siloed findings with limited relevance to refugee communities. Addressing this gap, this paper reports on the third phase of a Decolonizing Participatory Action Research (PAR) study examining historical trauma and intergenerational healing among second-generation Tamil refugee young adults in Toronto. This community-driven study foregrounds a praxis of healing envisioned with, by, and for refugee communities. Two research questions guided the inquiry: (1) What elements are important for community healing among Tamil young adults? and (2) What do community healing practices and therapeutic interventions look like in this context? Using storytelling and participatory avatar-based community circles, alongside reflexive thematic analysis, seven key elements of community healing were identified: (1) agency and self-determination; (2) historical trauma-informed approaches; (3) cultural safety; (4) intergenerational connectedness and belonging; (5) destigmatized access and delivery; (6) holistic and authentic healing practices; and (7) truth-telling as justice. Findings highlight community healing as a dynamic, dialectical process, requiring both resistance to intersecting systems of oppression and the cultivation of radical hope for justice and liberation. Findings also emphasize the importance of culturally grounded, community-led interventions in promoting mental well-being. This study contributes innovative, participatory methodology and actionable insights for practitioners and policymakers, advancing a shift toward liberatory approaches to refugee health.
Palestinian refugee camps in the occupied West Bank share the same geographic space as adjacent urban neighbourhoods but remain socially, politically and institutionally distinct. This study examined whether refugee camp residence is associated with greater exposure to human rights violations, political violence, deprivation and poorer mental health. A cross-sectional survey of 3000 Palestinian adults was conducted in 2025 across three refugee camps and neighbouring urban areas. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted. Overall, 77.1% reported at least one human rights violation, 91.7% deprivation, 77.1% personal exposure to political violence, 81.1% witnessed political violence and 30.0% dissatisfaction with mental health. Compared with urban residents, refugee camp residents had higher odds of reporting any human rights violation (aOR 1.52, 95% CI 1.28-1.81), personal (aOR 3.48, 95% CI 2.54-4.78), household (aOR 4.24, 95% CI 3.62-4.98) and witnessing political violence (aOR 4.48, 95% CI 3.52-5.69), deprivation (aOR 1.60, 95% CI 1.34-1.91) and dissatisfaction with mental health (aOR 2.51, 95% CI 1.97-3.19). The results suggest that health inequities experienced by Palestinian refugee camp residents are produced through the cumulative effects of structural violence, deprivation and systematic human rights violations rather than by spatial location alone.
BACKGROUND: In Australia, healthcare providers face significant challenges in meeting the niche health needs of refugees. Social determinants of health, including limited health literacy and finances, complicate refugees' access to treatment for conditions, such as chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Understanding the strategies utilised by a specialised general practice for refugees can offer guidance for treating this population. The aim of this study was to explore how primary care is currently managing CHB care tailored to refugees and to identify areas for potential improvements. METHODS: Between August and December 2024, we conducted 15 semi-structured interviews with nine general practitioners, four nurses, one pharmacist and one infectious disease specialist. We used a convenience sample and snowballing; most participants worked at a refugee-focused general practice in the west of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. All interviews were recorded and transcribed; data were analysed descriptively. RESULTS: Primary healthcare providers in our study recognised the challenges of treating refugees with CHB, including low health literacy, and the cost of providing and seeking care. However, when compared with hospital services, the benefits of primary care include community integration and location, rapport development, and the availability of interpreter services. Subsidising primary care provider training and other costs were recommended. CONCLUSIONS: Primary care may be better positioned than hospital services to treat refugees with CHB. These findings support funding and improving CHB management in primary care to meet the needs of refugees, which will lead to better health outcomes for this disadvantaged population.
Millions of children across the world are affected by war and displacement. In addition to having experienced traumatic war-related events, many refugee children end up living in adverse conditions with little access to basic resources. It is well established that children exposed to war and displacement are at increased risk for the development of mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and behavioural problems. In this paper the Biological Pathways of Risk and Resilience in Syrian Refugee Children study (BIOPATH) is introduced, which was conducted over the last 10 years in order to investigate the complex interplay between psychosocial and biological factors in the development of risk and resilience among a large sample of vulnerable Syrian refugee children (N = 1,600) living in informal refugee settlements in Lebanon. Key findings from the BIOPATH study are summarized and reported, including the prevalence and predictors of mental health problems, predictors of risk and resilience, the development of resilience over time, the relationship between war exposure, hair cortisol levels and epigenetic factors (i.e. DNA methylation), as well as the role of the trait of environmental sensitivity for refugee children’s mental health.
Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) face significant challenges shaped by forced migration, trauma, legal uncertainty, and systemic barriers in host countries. While education is widely recognised as important for integration, less is known about how educational experiences contribute to UASC wellbeing, safety, belonging, and future opportunities. Drawing on Kohli (2011), the Social Identity Approach to Health (Haslam, Jetten, Postmes, and Haslam 2009; Kёllezi, and Reicher 2012; Herman 1992) trauma recovery theory and human rights framework (UNCRC 1989), this multi-perspective qualitative study explores the role of education in supporting the wellbeing, integration, and success of UASC. The study analysed qualitative interviews with 13 UASC care leavers, 10 foster carers, and 16 education professionals. The analysis identifies four key themes: safety and trust, social connections and belonging, success and resilience and equitable access. The findings highlight that educational establishments can help young people reconstruct ordinary life, and develop psychological stability, social connection, and future opportunities. Simultaneously, exclusionary practices, legal ambiguity, and structural barriers can undermine these processes. The study advances understanding of education as social and institutional contributor to wellbeing, and argues for trauma-informed right-based and inclusive educational practices that support UASC wellbeing and long-term social inclusion.
In 2024, humanitarian volunteers in New York began accompanying unhoused asylum seekers to Kenkeleba House Gallery, initially seeking warmth during the city’s migrant shelter crisis. What began as an act of necessity evolved into improvised English lessons using the exhibition Long Journey Forward: Black Men in Passage. Observational evaluation suggests that inquiry-based, translanguage tours fostered accelerated language acquisition, participant agency, and civic and cultural integration among participants. This paper argues for integrating museum education and humanitarian work through multilingual gallery teaching, and offers autoethnographic reflections on the reciprocal lessons museum professionals and humanitarian volunteers can offer each other.
This comparative ethnographic study draws on fieldwork in England and Brasil to analyse how refugee and (im)migrant children's educational rights are undermined in these two contexts. I argue that inclusion operates as enclosure: rather than guaranteeing rights, inclusion frameworks reproduce the structural conditions that sustain exclusion. In England, the hostile environment subordinates education to migration control through asylum dispersal, No Recourse to Public Funds, and the Prevent Duty’s surveillance. In Brasil, despite stronger legal protections, the humanitarianisation of Venezuelan displacement obscures the role of US sanctions and uses educational materials to reinforce donor influence. Across both contexts, systemic barriers such as housing instability, language exclusion, and policy fragmentation perpetuate enclosure. The findings challenge universal inclusion frameworks and call for justice-oriented, context-sensitive alternatives to advance educational equity for all children.
Turkey hosts the world’s largest refugee population, and extracurricular activities have increasingly been positioned as potential supports for refugee students’ psycho-social adjustment, school belonging, and peer integration. However, a comprehensive synthesis of ECA-related outcomes for refugee students in Turkish educational settings remains absent from the literature. This systematic review examined the associations between extracurricular activity participation and refugee student outcomes across psychological, social, and educational settings-related domains. Following PRISMA guidelines, studies were evaluated using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), and findings were integrated through the Systematic What Is Known (SWIM) framework. Findings suggest that ECAs are associated with potential improvements in school attachment, perceived social wellbeing, and aspects of psychological adjustment; however, outcomes varied substantially across studies and participant groups, and the overall certainty of evidence remained low to very low. The findings further suggest that many extracurricular activities operate primarily within an integration-oriented framework, producing individual-level benefits without consistently addressing relational and structural barriers to equitable participation. The review highlights the importance of culturally responsive facilitation, inclusion-oriented programme design, and greater attention to refugee students’ own perspectives in future research and practice. Overall, extracurricular activities appear promising but insufficiently understood mechanisms for supporting refugee students’ inclusion and psycho-social adjustment within educational settings. Systematic What Is Known (SWIM) یکپارچه گردیدند.
People with restricted mobility in humanitarian settings face extreme barriers to healthcare access, leading to functional decline, social isolation, and significant mental health distress [44]. In dense urban Lebanese refugee camps, hazardous infrastructure and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) further exacerbate the vulnerability of homebound and bed-ridden individuals and their informal caregivers [30]. This study evaluates the operational feasibility and outcomes of a multidisciplinary nurse-led home-based care (HBC) model designed to address these physical and psychosocial needs. This convergent mixed-methods descriptive study investigated a nurse-led HBC program in the Shatila and Bourj el Barajneh refugee camps in Beirut, Lebanon, between June 2021 and October 2023. We analysed routinely collected operational data for 105 patient-caregiver dyads (verbal retrospective consent) and conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with a purposive subsample of 16 dyads as 32 participants 16 patients and 16 informal caregivers (written prospective consent) to explore participant perceptions. Quantitative outcomes were analysed for the n=79 dyads who completed the full intervention. The program achieved a high retention rate of 82%. Quantitative findings demonstrated significant improvements in mental health, with a reduction in depression and anxiety scores for both patients and caregivers (both p < 0.001). Enrolment was accompanied by statistically significant reductions in depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7) scores among both patients and caregivers (both \(p<0.001\) ). Statistically significant gains were observed in physical dependency (Basic Activities of Daily Living, p= 0.003), alongside documented wound healing and maintenance of high medication adherence. Qualitative data revealed that the program’s primary value lay in alleviating profound social isolation, restoring dignity, and providing emotional and practical support, which participants often prioritized alongside clinical nursing interventions. Multidisciplinary nurse-led HBC is a feasible and acceptable model for delivering care to highly vulnerable populations in complex humanitarian settings. While the single-arm design precludes definitive causal attribution, observed trajectories indicate that in contexts of chronic distress, the psychosocial and relational components of care are as vital as clinical nursing intervention for fostering resilience in both patients and caregivers.
Background The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a commonly used screening instrument for assessing emotional and behavioral strengths and difficulties among children and adolescents. However, although the SDQ’s psychometric properties have been tested extensively in the literature, its current form is under debate as to whether it is suitable as a tool to assess adolescent mental health, especially among refugees. Therefore, this study aims to validate the SDQ scale among Adolescent Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Palestine, and Jordan. Methods The psychometric properties of the original SDQ and other suggested alternatives were tested. First, construct validity for the original SDQ was tested through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Then, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to evaluate the latent factorial structure for suggested alternatives, followed by CFA to provide additional evaluation of each alternative. Then, convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity were assessed. Finally, the internal consistency and reliability were assessed using multiple tests. Results This study included 2,828 adolescent girls living in Palestine refugee camps in the West Bank and Jordan. Of these, 2,725 participants were included in the final analysis based on completion of the SDQ. CFA indicated that the original five-factor SDQ demonstrated poor fit in this sample (CFI/TLI < 0.40; RMSEA = 0.081; SRMR = 0.110), with several items showing low standardized loadings. EFA and CFA analyses supported alternative factorial structures. A four-factor model showed acceptable fit (CFI = 0.896; RMSEA = 0.040; SRMR = 0.039) after removing poorly performing items, but a three-factor solution provided the best overall fit (CFI = 0.942; TLI = 0.930; RMSEA = 0.034; SRMR = 0.033). The final three-factor model retained 15 items representing Emotional Symptoms, Prosocial behavior, and Conduct Problems. The weak correlation between the difficulties did not support convergent validity score and WHO-5 well-being (r = −0.245). Criterion validity analyses showed acceptable discrimination for overall difficulties (AUC = 0.776). Reliability analyses indicated adequate internal consistency for the composite difficulties scale (α = 0.71). Conclusion The original SDQ structure validity and reliability were not supported for use among Palestinian refugees in the West Bank and Jordan. Instead, the 3-factor and 15-item alternative might be a better alternative, given its superior model fit indices and construct validity. However, it still had limitations in reliability and convergent validity, making it far from being an adequate substitute for the original SDQ. Contexts, culture, and the surrounding environment might influence how adolescents in refugee settings understand, interpret, and respond to SDQ items.
In line with government priorities, universities increasingly promise to provide ‘workplace ready’ graduates, yet for many migrant women this readiness is produced through shadow work, understood as unpaid, invisible labour. Drawing on participatory action research with self-identified Culturally and Linguistically Marginalised Migrant and/or Refugee (CALMMR) communities in Australia, we analyse two contrasting lived experiences, Leni, a white German international student, and Adira, an Indian graduate and woman of colour, to theorise shadow work geographies across university, immigration and labour-market infrastructures. We show how emptiness (service deserts and academic acculturation burdens), resistance (workarounds to placement, visa and language requirements) and repair (reciprocal relations that convert hidden labour into collective capacity) together constitute slow infrastructural violence while also enabling transformation. We argue that ‘readiness’ is negotiated through embodied, relational labour that is unevenly distributed along intersecting lines of racialisation, migration status, gender and care responsibilities. We conclude with suggestions for concrete reforms.
This study examined the challenges faced by refugee parents caring for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Twenty-two parents participated in a mixed-methods study that included surveys and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed significant challenges, including reduced parental well-being, increased family strain, and limited access to specialized support services. Parental satisfaction with caregiving was correlated with the perceived severity of autism symptoms. Thematic analysis of interviews identified five key domains of challenges: institutional, personal, financial, family, and social. Family cohesion and presence of dependents emerged as protective factors mitigating the negative impacts of displacement. The study concludes that refugee parents caring for children with autism require comprehensive support, including specialized healthcare, psychological support, and financial assistance. The findings are discussed within the broader context of developmental disabilities in humanitarian settings, highlighting both shared challenges and autism-specific needs.
