Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in improving the psychological well-being of patients diagnosed with cancer. Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest–posttest design with a control group and a follow-up assessment. The statistical sample consisted of 60 patients with cancer who were selected through purposive sampling and assigned to three groups of 20 participants. Participants in the intervention groups received an ACT-based intervention consisting of eight 45-minute sessions delivered over one month, whereas the control group received no psychological intervention during the study period. Psychological well-being was assessed using Ryff’s 84-item Psychological Well-Being Scale (1989) at the pretest, posttest, and follow-up stages. The collected data were analyzed using inferential statistical procedures in SPSS version 25. Findings: The inferential analysis demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the intervention and control groups in posttest psychological well-being scores. Participants who received Acceptance and Commitment Therapy showed significantly higher levels of psychological well-being than those in the control group. The intervention produced a very large effect size (η² = 0.935), indicating that a substantial proportion of the variance in post-intervention psychological well-being was attributable to the therapeutic intervention. The follow-up analysis further showed that the improvement in psychological well-being was maintained after the completion of treatment, suggesting the stability and durability of the intervention effects over time. Conclusion: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an effective psychological intervention for enhancing psychological well-being among patients with cancer. By promoting psychological flexibility, acceptance of difficult internal experiences, present-moment awareness, and engagement in value-oriented behaviors, ACT may help patients cope more adaptively with the psychological consequences of cancer. Therefore, this intervention may be incorporated into psychosocial rehabilitation and supportive care programs for patients with cancer.
Purpose: The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of positive parenting training and Choice Theory–based parenting training on the parent–child relationship. Methods and Materials: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group and a follow-up assessment. The statistical population consisted of all mothers of boys aged 6 to 9 years enrolled in schools within Educational District 6 of the Mashhad Department of Education during the 2025–2026 academic year. Participants were selected using purposive non-probability sampling based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria (Group 1: positive parenting training, n = 15; Group 2: Choice Theory–based parenting training, n = 15; Group 3: control, n = 15). Following selection, participants were randomly assigned by lottery to the positive parenting training and Choice Theory–based parenting training intervention groups. Data were collected using the short form of the Mother–Child Relationship Scale developed by Pianta (1994). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (repeated-measures analysis of variance). Findings: The findings indicated that both interventions had a positive and statistically significant effect on improving the parent–child relationship. However, Choice Theory–based parenting training was more effective in strengthening the parent–child relationship. These effects remained stable at the follow-up assessment. Conclusion: Both educational approaches demonstrated practical effectiveness in improving the parent–child relationship. However, the Choice Theory approach, with its emphasis on empathic communication and understanding children's psychological needs, was more effective in fostering a deeper emotional bond between mothers and their children. It is recommended that future parent education programs integrate both approaches to maximize intervention effectiveness.
Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of Compassion-Focused Therapy and Existential Therapy in reducing death anxiety and increasing illness acceptance among patients with cancer in remission. Methods and Materials: This applied study used a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest-follow-up design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of patients with common cancers in remission who referred to hospitals in Tehran during 2025–2026. Using purposive sampling, 45 eligible participants were selected and randomly assigned to Compassion-Focused Therapy, Existential Therapy, and control groups, with 15 participants in each group. Both intervention groups received eight 90-minute weekly sessions, while the control group received no psychological intervention. Data were collected using the Templer Death Anxiety Scale and the Acceptance of Illness Scale. The data were analyzed in SPSS version 26 using repeated-measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni-adjusted post hoc comparisons at a significance level of 0.05. Findings: Repeated-measures analysis of variance showed significant effects of time, group, and time-by-group interaction for death anxiety and illness acceptance (p < 0.001). Bonferroni comparisons indicated that both Compassion-Focused Therapy and Existential Therapy significantly reduced death anxiety and increased illness acceptance compared with the control group (p < 0.001). Compassion-Focused Therapy produced a significantly greater reduction in death anxiety than Existential Therapy (MD = 1.79, SE = 0.41, p < 0.001), whereas Existential Therapy produced a significantly greater increase in illness acceptance than Compassion-Focused Therapy (MD = 2.30, SE = 0.46, p < 0.001). The improvements were maintained at follow-up. Conclusion: Both Compassion-Focused Therapy and Existential Therapy were effective in improving psychological adjustment among patients with cancer in remission; however, Compassion-Focused Therapy was more effective in reducing death anxiety, whereas Existential Therapy was more effective in increasing illness acceptance.
Purpose: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of multicultural therapy in reducing anxiety and psychological distress and improving social well-being and social performance among international students in West Asia. Methods and Materials: This quantitative study was conducted in two descriptive and quasi-experimental phases. The statistical population consisted of 250 international students studying at Mohaghegh Ardabili University during the 2023–2024 academic year. In the screening phase, 124 students were selected through multistage cluster sampling and completed the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Keyes Social Well-Being Scale, Hadian-Nasab Social Performance Questionnaire, and Goldberg General Health Questionnaire. Following screening, 30 students who met the inclusion criteria, including a Beck Anxiety Inventory score greater than 17, were selected and randomly assigned to a multicultural therapy group and a wait-list control group, with 15 participants in each group. Both groups completed pretest and posttest assessments. The experimental group received multicultural therapy, whereas the control group received no active intervention during the study period. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance after examining the relevant statistical assumptions. Findings: After controlling for pretest scores, multicultural therapy produced a significant reduction in anxiety compared with the wait-list control condition, F(1, 27) = 44.83, p < .001, partial η² = .624. Significant group differences were also observed in social well-being, F(1, 27) = 35.63, p < .001, partial η² = .569, and social performance, F(1, 27) = 29.73, p < .001, partial η² = .524, with higher adjusted posttest scores in the experimental group. General psychological distress was also significantly lower in the multicultural therapy group, F(1, 27) = 40.25, p < .001, partial η² = .598. Conclusion: Multicultural therapy appears to be an effective culturally responsive intervention for reducing anxiety and psychological distress and enhancing the social well-being and social performance of international students.

ABSTRACT This study examined differences in sixth-grade students’ conceptual understanding and critical thinking between Problem-Based Learning (PBL) supported by an Augmented Reality (AR)-Based Book and conventional instruction in Solar System learning. A quantitative quasi-experimental study employing a nonequivalent pretest–posttest control group design involved 35 students from two elementary schools in Blora, Indonesia, comprising 17 experimental and 18 control participants. The intervention was implemented across three instructional sessions. Data were collected using validated essay-based assessments and analyzed through analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), controlling for pretest performance. The experimental group achieved higher posttest means in conceptual understanding (86.71 vs. 72.67) and critical thinking (85.82 vs. 70.17). ANCOVA revealed significant adjusted between-group differences in conceptual understanding (mean difference = 13.87, 95% CI [11.45, 16.29], p < .001) and critical thinking (mean difference = 15.38, 95% CI [12.19, 18.57], p < .001). MANCOVA confirmed a significant multivariate difference (Pillai’s Trace = .862, F(2, 30) = 95.34, p < .001). These findings suggest that integrating AR-supported visualization within structured problem-based inquiry may support conceptual learning and evidence-based reasoning. Nevertheless, the small sample, nonrandom allocation, and school- and teacher-level confounding preclude definitive causal conclusions. Larger multisite and factorial studies are recommended.
Generation Alpha (born 2010-2024) and Generation Beta (born 2025-2039) represent an unprecedented developmental archetype defined by total digital integration and ubiquitous artificial intelligence (AI). This empirical study evaluated specialized psychological adaptation mechanisms, parenting models, and mental health intervention frameworks across these cohorts. Utilizing a mixed-methods design, quantitative data were gathered from $N = 300$ parents (Gen Alpha parents and expectant/early Gen Beta parents) using the Modified Parental Stress Scale (PSS) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), supplemented by qualitative interviews with $N = 20$ pediatric mental health experts. Independent samples $t$-tests confirmed that Gen Alpha/Beta display significantly higher digital dependency anxiety ($M = 38.60, p < .001$) alongside superior visual-spatial intelligence ($M = 44.10, p < .001$) relative to normative baselines. Crucially, a proactive "Digital Integration" co-navigation parenting framework yielded significantly lower parental stress ($M = 29.50$) compared to rigid "Digital Detox" restriction models ($M = 42.80, p < .001$). A preventive clinical framework focusing on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and cognitive impulse management is proposed.
This mixed-methods study examined whether first-year teachers could improve relationships with students through Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Fifty novice teachers implemented one of three PBIS strategies: daily one-on-one conversation, verbal praise, or immediate rewards with 192 selected students over a two-week period. Teacher-student relationships were measured using the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale (STRS) before and after the intervention. Results showed significant reductions in conflict (t(191) = 7.14, p < .001, d = 0.98) and moderate increases in closeness (t(191) = –7.11, p < .001, d = 0.67). No significant differences emerged across grade levels, teacher and student gender, or PBIS strategy type. Thematic analysis of teacher reflections highlighted improvements in engagement, cooperation, emotional regulation, and relational trust. Although the study was limited by its two-week duration and reliance on teacher self-reports, the findings demonstrate that even brief PBIS interventions can yield measurable relational benefits. Implications are discussed for teacher preparation programs and school-based practice. Keywords: teacher-student relationships, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), teacher preparation programs, first-year/novice teachers, school climate.
Integrating traditional Bugis-Makassar games into physical education has the potential to support the development of elementary school students’ fundamental movement skills and physical fitness. However, its effectiveness requires empirical testing. This article presents a simulated analysis to illustrate the evaluation of physical education instruction based on traditional Bugis-Makassar games. The research scenario follows a quasi-experimental design involving two groups of fifth-grade students, with 30 students each in the experimental and control groups. The simulated data represent fundamental movement skills and physical fitness test scores before and after the intervention. The analysis includes descriptive statistics, normality tests, homogeneity of variance tests, independent-samples t tests, and normalized gain (N-gain) calculations. The simulated results show that the experimental group’s mean fundamental movement skills score increased from 58.40 to 82.30, while the control group’s mean score increased from 59.10 to 69.20. The between-group difference in the simulated data was significant (t = 5.842; p < .001). For physical fitness, the experimental group’s mean score increased from 61.20 to 79.40, while the control group’s mean score increased from 60.80 to 68.50, with a significant between-group difference (t = 4.763; p < .001). The experimental group’s N-gain values were 0.57 for fundamental movement skills and 0.47 for physical fitness, both classified as moderate. These simulated patterns may inform hypothesis formulation and the design of evaluations for Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) instruction based on local wisdom. Conceptually, this approach connects the development of students’ motor skills with the use of traditional games in instruction. Its effectiveness requires verification through field research using appropriate instruments and documented data collection procedures.
The stress facing the educational leadership as school principals are required to deal with administrative management, supervision of staff, academic performance and institutional development. There are specific issues that may affect female principals in addition to the other factors listed above: Interpersonal demands, competing professional demands, and work–life balance. Problem-Focused Coping Strategies (PFCS) may be a way to cope with stress by identifying the sources of stress, planning and problem solving, prioritizing and making positive decisions. The present study investigated the correlation between PFCS and Stress Management (SM) of female school principals. The method of quantitative research was employed and data was gathered from 74 principals (females). Analysis of the correlation showed a weak negative correlation between PFCS and SM (r = -.117). The regression model accounted for about 1.4% of the variability in SM (R2 = .014). The overall regression model was not significant (F (1,72) = 1.005, p = .319). The regression coefficient for PFCS was also negative and not significantly different from 0 (B = -.254, β = -.117, p = .319). The results of this study suggest that there was no statistically significant predictive relationship found between the female principals who participated in the study and PFCS and SM. The results do not show that problem-focused coping is not effective, however; it does imply that it may be insufficient to account for variations in stress management in this sample. The results indicate that there is a need to explore further individual and organizational factors, such as workload, institutional support, leadership experience, resources, and work–life balance. More research is needed using larger samples, measuring instruments that have been established and validated, and using longitudinal or intervention designs to investigate the role of problem-focused coping in stress management. Other professional development programs that could be beneficial for educational authorities include those related to problem solving, time management, delegation, and conflict resolution. The research brings insights from the sphere of stress amongst female educational leaders to the discussion and provides some insights for future research directions.
Music has been investigated as a potential influence on exercise performance, perceived exertion, recovery, and sleep. However, studies vary in their interventions, populations, exercise contexts, and measured outcomes. This scoping review aimed to map experimental evidence on music interventions in resistance, isometric and handgrip, aerobic exercise, acute recovery, and sleep, and to identify evidence gaps. PubMed/MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for studies published between 1980 and October 2026. Eligible studies involved human participants, compared a music intervention with a control or alternative condition, and reported exercise performance, perceived exertion, psychological responses, physiological recovery, or sleep outcomes. Screening was conducted using Rayyan. Findings were synthesised descriptively across four domains. Thirty studies involving 1,183 participants were included. Studies were published between 1981 and 2021 and examined resistance exercise (n=11), isometric and handgrip exercise (n=8), aerobic exercise and acute recovery (n=7) and sleep (n=4). The evidence maps a broad range of music interventions and outcomes, with variable findings across exercise and sleep contexts. Research gaps include limited participant diversity and insufficient investigation of sleep and recovery in athletic populations. Further studies are needed to clarify how music characteristics, individual preferences, and task demands relate to outcomes.
Experiences of bullying can have significant psychological consequences, including an increased risk of social anxiety. This study aimed to examine changes in social anxiety following Virtual Reality Social Exposure (VRSE) among bullying victims. A one-group pretest–posttest design without a control group was employed with 12 participants. The intervention consisted of three gradual exposure sessions in virtual environments representing social situations. Social anxiety was measured before and after the intervention, and the data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results indicated a statistically significant decrease in social anxiety scores following the intervention (p = 0.002), with a reported effect size of 0.974. These findings suggest that VRSE may be a promising approach for reducing social anxiety among bullying victims. However, the absence of a control group and the small sample size limit conclusions regarding its effectiveness and safety. Further studies with larger samples, control groups, and systematic safety assessments are needed.
Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic created social disruptions, leading to high levels of mental health problems for adolescents. Interpersonal stressors, such as lack of familial support, peer victimization, and discrimination, may have further exacerbated teen mental health issues. Yet, the psychological impact of interpersonal stressors and their interactive effects with high levels of loneliness remains unknown. In this pre-registered study , conducted in November and December 2020 (approximately eight months into the COVID-19 pandemic), we used a diverse sample of adolescents from across 43 U.S. states with elevated depressive symptoms (n = 2,452, ages 13–16) to examine how familial support, peer victimization, and discrimination are concurrently associated with mental health outcomes. Results indicated that perceived discrimination was the strongest standardized correlate across continuous internalizing outcomes (depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and hopelessness), whereas lack of familial support was the primary correlate of suicidal ideation; if youth reported a lack of familial support, they were over three times as likely to report suicidal ideation. Loneliness significantly moderated the cross-sectional links between lack of familial support and depressive symptoms, as well as perceived discrimination and hopelessness. Simple slope probing demonstrated a distress ceiling effect: interpersonal stressors were most strongly associated with elevated distress among youth reporting low baseline loneliness, whereas youth experiencing high loneliness exhibited consistently elevated distress regardless of stressor exposure. These findings underscore interpersonal stressors and loneliness as high-priority targets for youth prevention and intervention programs, particularly during periods of widespread social disruption.
This study aimed to develop and evaluate a Problem-Based Wordwall Edugame instructional package for sixth-grade Science and Social Studies (IPAS) and examine its association with students’ critical-thinking performance. Using a research-and-development approach guided by the ADDIE model, the study incorporated a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest comparison involving all 30 sixth-grade students at SDN 3 Sendangrejo, Indonesia, assigned by pretest scores to experimental (n = 15) and control (n = 15) groups. Data were collected through expert-validation sheets, classroom observations, teacher and student response questionnaires, and critical-thinking tests, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, assumption tests, paired- and independent-samples t-tests, and normalized gains. Expert validation yielded 87% for content, 89% for media, and 88% for learning devices; implementation reached 92.76%, and teacher and student responses each reached 93%. Mean critical-thinking scores increased from 56.80 to 89.87 in the experimental group and from 53.73 to 68.87 in the control group; normalized gains were 0.77 and 0.33, respectively. The posttest group difference was significant, t(28) = 12.73, p < .001. These findings are consistent with constructivist and problem-based learning research and suggest that pedagogically integrated gamification can support critical-thinking development. However, the single-school sample, nonrandom group allocation, and combined intervention limit causal inference and generalizability; larger controlled studies should test individual components and longer-term effects.
Abstract Background Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a transdiagnostic process relevant to common mental health problems in primary care. RNT-ACT is a brief acceptance and commitment therapy-based protocol targeting RNT in two sessions. This pilot study assessed the feasibility of RNT-ACT compared with therapist-supported internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) in Swedish primary care. Methods Thirteen participants were randomised: 7 to RNT-ACT and 6 to iCBT. The primary feasibility outcomes were recruitment rate, intervention non-completion, and patient satisfaction measured with the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ-8). Symptom and process measures were secondary outcomes. Secondary outcomes were assessed at baseline and at 1- and 3-month follow-ups. Analyses were descriptive and exploratory, based on available observations without imputation of missing data. Results Thirteen of 20 eligible individuals were enrolled (65%), corresponding to 35% of all 37 individuals screened. All participants in the RNT-ACT group completed the intervention, whereas 4 of 6 participants in the iCBT group did not complete the intervention. Mean CSQ-8 scores were 27.8 (SD 3.7; n = 5) in the RNT-ACT group and 23.0 (SD 0.0; n = 2) in the iCBT group. Conclusions The small sample size and high iCBT non-completion limit between-group comparisons. Further investigation of recruitment, treatment engagement, and patient and therapist experiences is needed before determining whether and how to proceed to a full-scale RCT. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05946382 registered July 14, 2023.
Background and Purpose: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a global concern in adolescent mental health. Rural boarding middle school students, as a unique and vulnerable population, remain understudied regarding the potential heterogeneity and longitudinal trajectories of NSSI. This study aimed to identify latent classes of NSSI among this group, examine their transition patterns over time, and evaluate the effectiveness of an emotion management group intervention. Methods: Study 1 cross-sectionally surveyed 927 adolescents; we split samples into non-NSSI and NSSI subgroups and ran latent profile analysis (LPA) only among participants with NSSI ( n =285). Study 2 conducted a 6-month follow-up of 550 participants and applied latent transition analysis (LTA) to examine class shifts and predictive factors. Study 3 was a randomized controlled trial in which 30 students from the High-NSSI received an 8-week emotion-management group intervention. Intervention effects were evaluated using repeated-measures ANCOVA with demographic covariates. Results: Within the NSSI subgroup ( n = 285), two classes were identified: a High-NSSI class ( n = 21, 7.4%) and a Low-NSSI class ( n = 264, 92.6%). Poor sleep quality and bullying victimization independently predicted High-NSSI membership. Longitudinal analysis revealed high stability in the Low-NSSI class (91%) and high fluidity in the High-NSSI class (83% transitioning to low-risk). The emotion-management intervention significantly reduced both NSSI frequency and negative affect. Discussion: These findings demonstrate that clinically meaningful NSSI subtypes exist among rural boarding adolescents and that sleep quality and bullying are key modifiable risk factors. The results support a stepped-care approach in school settings, where the High-NSSI class requires intensive intervention and the Low-NSSI class may benefit from less intensive, universal supports. The emotion-management group intervention is an effective school-based program for the most severe NSSI subtype. Mental health services are constantly evolving with the gradual introduction of functionalized care, which means medical intervention has become more focused on a particular clinical area or stage of the illness. This has progressed to having designated teams for inpatient psychiatry. Usually, psychiatrists manage their patients both in outpatient and inpatient settings while working in a particular geographical area or sector. Moving away from this model to a functionalized inpatient setting, where other psychiatrists take care of their patients, is seen as a breach in continuity of care. In this context, it was intended to review the current literature for the experience of clinicians and patients in these sectorized (medical continuity) or functionalized models of psychiatric inpatient care. A narrative review of the current literature from multiple databases was conducted. The results suggested that there are positive and negative observations in both models. It appeared that neither met the expectations of patients nor clinicians. Patients preferred to be seen by the same consultant in community and inpatient settings, but clinical outcomes were not significantly different in the two models. The functionalized care was mostly medical continuity rather than multidisciplinary. Any changes in the care models may be driven by local facilities and issues. There is a need to improve the quality of care through existing models before any changes. More studies are needed to improve the evidence on the effectiveness of these service models.
Background: Patients recovering from craniotomy in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are at risk of hemodynamic changes related to stress responses, neurological impairment, pain, and environmental stimuli. A combination of music therapy and hand massage may help maintain hemodynamic stability in these patients. Objective: To describe the application of combined music therapy and hand massage to support hemodynamic stability in post-craniotomy patients in the ICU. Methods: This evidence-based nursing intervention was implemented with three post-craniotomy patients admitted to the ICU of Abdul Wahab Sjahranie Regional General Hospital, Samarinda. The intervention consisted of 15 minutes of instrumental or classical music followed by 15 minutes of effleurage hand massage. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and oxygen saturation (SpO₂) were measured before and after each intervention. The intervention was conducted over three days, with each patient’s clinical changes monitored. Results: The case study findings indicated greater stability in blood pressure, MAP, HR, RR, and SpO₂ following the intervention. Conclusion: Combined music therapy and hand massage may be a safe, non-pharmacological intervention to support nursing care and maintain hemodynamic stability in post-craniotomy patients. Further research is needed to assess its effects on other outcomes, including biochemical changes.
Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) provide frontline guidance and support in demanding military environments, where operational workloads can affect personnel well-being and performance. This study described junior enlisted personnel’s assessments of NCO leadership, occupational burnout, and operational performance at the 560th Air Base Group, Brigadier General Benito N. Ebuen Air Base, during 2026, and examined challenges encountered by First Sergeants. A descriptive survey design involved 180 junior enlisted personnel selected from 326 eligible personnel through squadron-stratified sampling, supplemented by qualitative accounts from 11 First Sergeants. Adapted questionnaires measured four leadership dimensions, three burnout dimensions, and four performance dimensions; frequency, percentage, weighted mean, standard deviation, and thematic analysis were used. Leadership ratings ranged from 3.9236 for supervision, mentorship, and welfare support to 4.0361 for task guidance. Emotional exhaustion was moderate (M = 2.7833), whereas depersonalization (M ≈ 2.42) and reduced personal accomplishment (M = 2.1375) were low. Operational performance ratings were favorable (M = 4.0056–4.1667). Interview accounts identified manpower shortages, inadequate resources, strain on personnel welfare, and interpersonal leadership concerns. The findings informed a proposed Leadership Enhancement and Sustainability Framework prioritizing staffing, mentoring, workload management, and leadership integrity. Because the thesis did not report predictive regression or correlation tests, the results support descriptive assessment and an intervention proposal rather than established statistical prediction.
Psychotherapy is supported by evidence across several psychological conditions, yet its value cannot be understood solely through symptom change. This thematic integrative review examines psychotherapy as both an intervention and a relational setting in which psychological safety, trust, collaboration, and self-understanding may support change. Literature discussed in the source synopsis is organized around three themes: psychotherapy outcomes across mood, anxiety, trauma-related, and personality difficulties; the therapeutic alliance and safety; and adapted, neurodiversity-affirming support for autistic people. Meta-analytic and theoretical literature generally supports psychotherapy effectiveness, while alliance research identifies the therapeutic relationship as a robust correlate of outcomes. Work on autistic youth suggests that adapted interventions can be beneficial, although outcomes and methods vary. Across these areas, the review identifies a need to connect clinical outcomes with clients? lived experience of safety, identity, accessibility, and agency. The review is integrative rather than systematic: the source material does not document reproducible database searches, screening counts, or formal quality appraisal. Accordingly, conclusions are interpretive and should not be treated as a comprehensive estimate of treatment effects. The paper argues for therapeutic spaces that combine evidence-informed care with collaborative, individualized, and affirming relationships.
Students’ learning outcomes in Informatics remain a challenge when conventional instructional media offer limited interaction, contributing to passive engagement and difficulties understanding learning materials. This study examined changes in Grade X students’ learning outcomes after the implementation of Wordwall-assisted interactive learning media for the Computer Systems topic at SMAN 1 Sawahlunto, Indonesia. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 30 students from class X E4. Students completed a multiple-choice achievement test before instruction, participated in Computer Systems learning activities supported by Wordwall, and completed a posttest afterward. The intervention incorporated game-based activities to support practice and engagement; however, the research records did not specify its duration. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test, with normalized gain (N-Gain) used to assess the level of improvement. The mean score increased from 53.67 on the pretest to 77.67 on the posttest, a difference of 24.00 points. The paired-samples t-test identified a statistically significant difference between scores (t = 8.664, df = 29, p < 0.001). The mean N-Gain was 0.538, indicating moderate improvement. These results show that students’ scores were higher after the Wordwall-assisted learning intervention. Nevertheless, the study did not include a control group, the observed change cannot be attributed to Wordwall alone; instructional or testing-related factors may also have contributed. Wordwall therefore be considered a useful supplementary medium for Informatics instruction, while further studies using control groups, larger samples, and documented intervention durations are needed to strengthen conclusions about its effectiveness.

In this study, we examine students’ reasons for course non-completion at a large, diverse, public research university in the university system of Georgia. We found these reasons in multiple datasets and used a mixed-methods approach to interpret them. While many studies have framed course withdrawals as rational decisions based on academic or personal factors, this study explores a variety of factors, including both practical and emotional considerations, that shape students’ withdrawal decisions. We analyzed emotional sentiment and reasons for course non-completion cited at the moment of withdrawal (i.e., disclosed on the registrar withdrawal form) as well as at retrospective timepoints (i.e., in a survey and semi-structured interview). At the time of withdrawal, students most frequently cited academic, personal, or mental health struggles as reasons for withdrawal, often expressing negative emotions. In some cases, students indicated the need for immediate crisis intervention. However, retrospective reflections revealed more positive emotions about their decisions and cited poor academic performance and an overall imbalance in their lives as key reasons. These findings highlight the complex interplay between academic challenges and emotional responses in the withdrawal process, suggesting that educators should consider both factors when addressing course non-completion. We also discuss the implications for future research and administrative policy.
Classroom participation in beginner Arabic courses is often interpreted through the number of students who answer questions aloud. This conceptual and practice-oriented paper argues that such a measure obscures differences between willingness to communicate, linguistic capacity, and the opportunity to participate. Drawing on research in Arabic learning, willingness to communicate, classroom discourse, interaction, and corrective feedback, it develops a barrier–indicator–response matrix for teacher decision-making. Six barriers are paired with provisional observable indicators, proportionate instructional responses, and limits on the evidence supporting each response. Three hypothetical Arabic classroom applications illustrate how the matrix can guide preparation, participation opportunities, and feedback without turning visible participation into a proxy for learning. The matrix is a heuristic rather than a validated diagnostic or intervention instrument. Future observational and intervention studies are needed to test its utility in beginner Arabic settings.
Anxiety symptoms can cause distress and interfere with social, occupational, and everyday functioning. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a structured psychological intervention widely used in the treatment of anxiety disorders. This manuscript is based on the dissertation titled "A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Among Patients with Severe Anxiety Disorder". The dissertation reports Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) results for 20 participants: 12 (60%) were in the minimal or "not at all" category, five (25%) in the mild category, two (10%) in the moderate category, and one (5%) in the severe category. These findings describe the anxiety-severity profile of the sample. The available results do not include verified pre-treatment and post-treatment scores, a comparison-group analysis, or inferential statistics sufficient to establish CBT effectiveness. The reported data therefore cannot demonstrate that CBT reduced anxiety in this sample. Findings should be interpreted cautiously because of the small sample and limited information about recruitment, participant characteristics, and intervention delivery.
ABSTRACT Disasters caused by the eruption of Mount Semeru not only cause physical damage but also affect the mental condition of the victims, especially teenagers as one of the vulnerable groups who are going through psychosocial development in their lives. Teenagers after a disaster can experience anxiety, stress, depression, and even PTSD. This community service aims to improve stress management skills, rebuild a sense of safety, and enhance social connections within the community. This community service applied a psychosocial intervention method to improve knowledge, stress management skills, and peer support using growth focus resilience questionsare. From the analysis of measurement results from 19 respondents who underwent psychosocial interventions, there was a tendency for their psychological conditions to improve. This is evidenced by the average score increasing from 66.11 to 75.00 out of a maximum score of 80, indicating the potential of REM-JIWA in enhancing the adaptive ability and psychological resilience of post-disaster adolescents. Psychosocial interventions can reduce stress levels in teenagers and improve their knowledge of stress management and resilience in adolescents. Introduction: Psychological factors can be important for the physical performance of developing female football players, but research is needed to assess their impact. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of a motivational psychological intervention strategy to improve physical performance in female U-15 football players from a football school in Zone 8 of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Method: Pre-experimental design with a single group and pretest-posttest measurements. Thirty football players participated. For the evaluation of the motivational climate, the PMCSQ-2 was used, while the YYIR1 and the Cooper Test were the instruments employed to assess physical performance. The intervention consisted of 12 sessions of 45 minutes over six weeks. The Shapiro-Wilk test was applied and then the Student's t-test for dependent samples. Results: The overall PMCSQ-2 score did not show statistically significant changes (t(29) = −1.37; p = 0.182; d = −0.250). On the contrary, statistically significant differences with large effect sizes were found for both the YYIR1 (t(29) = −16.08; p < 0.001; d = −2.936) and the Cooper Test (t(29) = −19.54; p < 0.001; d = −3.567). Discussion: Improvements are evident in the evaluated physical indicators, without significant changes in the overall motivational score. This divergence indicates that the physical response and the perception of the motivational climate do not always develop at the same pace. Conclusions: The intervention was associated with significant improvements in physical performance, which supports its application in youth women's football.
Reading comprehension is an essential skill that enables learners to understand texts, interpret information, and determine the meanings of unfamiliar words. However, some Grade 8 learners experience difficulties in comprehending reading materials because of limited vocabulary knowledge and difficulty identifying context clues. This study, titled Improving Grade 8 Reading Comprehension Through Targeted Context Clue Strategies, aimed to improve learners’ reading comprehension by implementing targeted, structured context clue strategies. The study involved 33 Grade 8 learners and focused on five categories: definition and explanation clues, synonym and restatement clues, antonym and contrast clues, example and illustration clues, and inference and general context clues. A pretest and posttest were administered to determine changes in learners’ performance following the intervention. The pretest results revealed an overall mean score of 2.48, interpreted as Low, while the posttest results showed an overall mean score of 3.60, interpreted as High. A paired-samples t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores, t(32) = −10.615, p < .001. The null hypothesis was rejected, indicating that the difference between the learners’ pretest and posttest performance was statistically significant. The findings suggest that targeted, structured context clue strategies may help improve learners’ ability to identify contextual information, infer unfamiliar word meanings, and understand reading passages. The study recommends the continued use of context clue strategies, with additional instructional support for example and illustration clues and definition and explanation clues, to further strengthen learners’ reading comprehension skills.
Reflective Practice (RP) is widely regarded as a cornerstone of psychotherapy training, supervision, and continuing professional development. Yet, despite its prominence across psychotherapeutic traditions, it remains conceptually vague and empirically contested. Recent critiques from basic psychological science (e.g., Lilienfeld & Basterfield, 2020) have argued that reflection may amplify cognitive bias and foster illusions of insight rather than improve clinical judgment. We argue that these criticisms carry weight precisely because the field has often failed to clearly define what RP is, how it functions, and under what conditions it becomes beneficial or harmful. Drawing on developmental models of therapist learning, we conceptualize RP as a multidimensional construct encompassing reflexivity as a capacity, reflective stance as an attitude, and reflection as activity. We propose that RP is most likely to support development when relationally scaffolded, informed by external feedback, and oriented toward testing and revising interpretations rather than confirming them. Reviewing developmental, quantitative, qualitative, and process-oriented evidence, we further argue that RP operates primarily as a probabilistic, context-dependent contributor to therapist development rather than as a discrete intervention with predictable outcomes. We conclude that RP is neither a panacea nor an illusion. Rather, when relationally scaffolded, theoretically informed, and oriented toward learning rather than certainty, it may provide a central mechanism through which therapists learn from clinical experience. Effective psychotherapy depends not only on therapeutic concepts and techniques but also on therapists’ ability to reflect on their clinical work, relationships, and decision-making. This paper conceptualizes Reflective Practice as a developmental process through which therapists may learn from experience, adapt to complex clinical situations, and develop their understanding and skills throughout their professional careers.
Context and relevance. The study investigates the contributions of Lev Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory to Brazilian special/inclusive education, particularly regarding the constitution of the subject with autism in school contexts. The theoretical framework is grounded in the concepts of drama, freedom and singularity, understanding the schooling process as a privileged pathway of human (trans)formation. Objective. To analyse how pedagogical knowledge impacts the constitution of the child with autism, based on the notion of constitutive singularity. Hypothesis. The schooling process anchored in critical-emancipatory pedagogical knowledge operates as a promoter of the subject's humanisation, in opposition to traditional clinical approaches that reduce the subject to diagnosis and to ableist perspectives that position them in a state of devaluation. Methods and materials. The research, adopting a cultural-historical approach, was configured as intervention-research with an eight-year-old student with autism, enrolled in the second year of primary education. Video recordings, audio recordings, photographs, field diaries and interviews with the teacher, the child and his mother were utilised. Data were analysed through the microgenetic approach. Results. The analysis of two paradigmatic episodes of story retelling through illustration and physical education class evidences that the child, upon inserting personal elements into school tasks, manifests his will and singularises himself, expressing the drama of the social personality as a struggle for existence. Conclusions. Understanding singularity as a dialectical, historical, cultural and dramatic process allows us to overcome pathologising views and to recognise that disability is not a destiny, but a condition that, in relations with others and with culture, can be transformed into potentiality.
Background Insomnia and poor sleep are highly prevalent among university students and are linked to impaired mental and physical health, reduced cognitive functioning, and lower academic performance. Existing interventions for insomnia include cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), mindfulness, and sleep hygiene. CBT-I is widely recognised as effective but remains difficult to access for the general population and lack scalability, long-term follow-up, and feasibility in non-clinical settings. Pragmatic, group-based approaches that can be delivered within the university and are tailored to help students develop self-endorsed routines and competencies for better sleep, creating sustainable changes that extend beyond the program period, is needed. Methods This study is a pragmatic, two-arm randomised controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of a group-based sleep program for university students with insomnia symptoms. A total of 118 full-time students aged 18–30 meeting diagnostic criteria for chronic insomnia disorder will be randomized (1:1) to either the intervention or a wait-list control group. The intervention comprises 12 weekly 90-minute group sessions followed by nine monthly follow-up meetings, facilitated by trained coaches. The program integrates core elements of CBT-I with motivational and coping strategies, delivered in an interactive and peer-supported format. The primary outcome is change in insomnia severity measured by the Bergen Insomnia Scale. Secondary outcomes include subjective and objective sleep measures, mental health, cognitive performance, academic attainment, health behaviours, physical fitness, and biological markers. Assessments will be conducted at baseline, post-program (12 weeks), and 12 months. A mixed methods process evaluation will assess fidelity, acceptability, mechanisms of impact, and contextual influences. Discussion This trial will be among the first pragmatic evaluations of a structured, group-based sleep intervention tailored to university students with insomnia. Key strengths include the randomised controlled design, comprehensive outcome assessment, 12-month follow-up, and embedded process evaluation. If effective, the program could provide a feasible, scalable, and cost-effective model to improve sleep and therein health, and academic performance in young adults in higher education.
This article examines difficulties in pronouncing French vowels among Moroccan primary school learners, analyzing how the articulatory and phonological features of Darija affect vowel production in French as a foreign language. The study adopts a comparative phonological approach to identify structural differences between the two vowel systems and explain the origins of the observed interference. Sixty fourth-grade learners in Moroccan public primary education participated in an action research study combining a diagnostic pretest of pronunciation errors with a posttest assessing the effectiveness of a phonetic correction intervention. The findings reveal that pronunciation errors reflect systemic difficulties attributable to differences between the vowel systems of Darija (a three-vowel system) and French (a sixteen-vowel system). The instructional intervention, combining articulatory, verbotonal, and comparative approaches, led to a significant reduction in errors, particularly for rounded and nasal vowels. The study offers practical pedagogical recommendations for integrating systematic corrective phonetics into French instruction at the primary school level.
Vocabulary support in early secondary education needs to reflect differences in learners’ reading readiness and opportunities to use words meaningfully. This study examined reported reading profiles and vocabulary ratings from six public secondary schools in Pio Duran, Albay, Philippines, to inform the development of supplementary vocabulary material. A descriptive analysis was conducted using school assessment summaries, teacher informed vocabulary ratings, and curricular appraisal frequencies documented in the thesis. Reading categories were treated as indicators of reading performance rather than direct measures of vocabulary mastery. School summaries generally showed fewer learners in the frustration category at posttest and more learners in instructional or independent categories. Vocabulary ratings increased across the six schools, from baseline values of 1.67–3.12 to posttest values of 2.06–3.90. However, identical scores across generalization, application, breadth, and precision prevented separate interpretation of these dimensions. Recomputed appraisal means were 4.93 for content quality, 4.94 for format, and 4.92 for presentation and organization on the reported five point scale. Accuracy ratings also identified minor errors requiring editorial attention. The supplementary material was organized around progressively demanding vocabulary tasks, contextual use, and differentiated support. Findings provide a local basis for refining instructional resources, but they do not establish intervention effectiveness. Inconsistent participant totals, incomplete documentation of assessment procedures, and discrepancies in validation records limit interpretation. Verification of the original records and a subsequent classroom evaluation are needed before stronger claims can be made. The study supports alignment between learner evidence, material design, and the scope of conclusions drawn from school assessments.
This community service activity reports the implementation of a token economy technique to support attention during English-language learning at LKP Endemic, Warungjayeng, Nganjuk. The activity used a classroom-action-oriented plan–act–observe–reflect framework involving 12 learners. Attention was operationalized through 20 observable indicators grouped into seven dimensions: attention orientation, sustained attention, task engagement, response to instruction, active participation, distraction control, and self-regulation. The intervention combined immediate token delivery, behavior-specific verbal praise, token recording, exchange opportunities, and gradual fading. Descriptive results showed a group mean of 43.92/80 at pre-intervention, 56.08/80 in Cycle I, and 67.75/80 in Cycle II. The absolute increase from baseline to Cycle II was 23.83 points, corresponding to a relative increase of approximately 54.26% from baseline. The largest descriptive improvements were observed in response to instruction, active participation, distraction control, and self-regulation. Cycle I reflection identified the need for more consistent timing of token delivery, more explicit behavior-specific praise, and reduced dependence on external rewards; these changes informed Cycle II through selective token delivery and gradual fading. Because the activity involved a small group without a comparison condition, the findings should be interpreted as descriptive evidence of local implementation rather than as a causal estimate of effectiveness. The findings provide a practical framework for integrating behavioral reinforcement with English-learning activities in a non-formal learning setting.
Shared Reading (SR) is a communal well-being intervention in which a literary text is read aloud and discussed in a group. A form of emotion-centred close reading, SR emerged as a reaction against elitist academic norms and was developed in an attempt to emotionalise and democratise literary study by moving it outside of the confines of the university. This theoretical essay argues that humanities and social science lecturers might benefit from introducing SR praxis into their classes. Each section analyses an aspect of SR through emotionally engaged (hooks, Palmer), relational (Hickey, Riddle, Gravett), and critical (Freire) pedagogical and theoretical lenses, arguing that SR serves many of the aspirations of these pedagogies. I then consider how SR might be implemented in an academic setting and the kind of adaptations that might be necessary. This essay is a thought experiment which I hope will lay the groundwork for a more sustained and applied experiment in SR. Throughout, I argue that infusing SR into university settings has the potential to positively benefit student well-being and academic performance.
This study assessed the socio-demographic profile and level of Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) functional literacy among senior high school students as a basis for developing a work readiness intervention program. Specifically, it examined the respondents’ profiles in terms of age, sex, general academic performance, and availability of TLE-related tools at home, as well as their level of functional literacy in technology and engineering design, food and nutrition, financial literacy, entrepreneurial competence, and agricultural literacy and agri-tech awareness. A descriptive research design was employed involving 406 senior high school students. Data were gathered using a validated researcher-made questionnaire and analyzed using frequency, percentage, and mean. Findings showed that the majority of respondents were 17–18 years old, with male students slightly outnumbering female students. Most respondents demonstrated favorable academic performance, with the largest proportion obtaining grades of 90 and above. In terms of available TLE-related resources at home, students had greater access to common cooking and household tools than to sewing and agricultural equipment. The findings further revealed varying levels of TLE functional literacy across the identified domains. Technology and engineering design literacy, food and nutrition literacy, and financial literacy were assessed as Needs Improvement, indicating areas requiring strengthened practical knowledge and skills. Agricultural literacy and agri-tech awareness reflected a relatively higher level of performance, while entrepreneurial competence was assessed as Very Satisfactory, indicating a notable strength among the respondents. Based on these findings, a work readiness intervention program entitled “Ready for Work: A Work Readiness Intervention Program for Enhancing TLE Functional Literacy among Senior High School Students” was proposed to address identified areas for improvement through hands-on, skill-based, and experiential learning activities. The study concludes that although students demonstrate strengths in entrepreneurial competence and academic performance, targeted instructional support and practical learning opportunities are needed to strengthen TLE functional literacy relevant to employment, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning. It is recommended that schools provide structured work readiness interventions, expand opportunities for experiential and hands-on learning, and integrate practical financial, technological, and livelihood skills into TLE instruction to better prepare students for future work environments.
Purpose: This study aims to develop and evaluate an adaptive ergonomic framework for reducing Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD) risks among pre-elderly workers in Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Methodology: This study adopted a sequential quantitative design consisting of two consecutive phases. The first phase involved a cross-sectional ergonomic assessment of 50 pre-elderly MSMEs workers using the Nordic Body Map (NBM), Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA), Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), and Quick Exposure Checklist (QEC). Based on the integrated assessment results, an adaptive ergonomic framework incorporating administrative controls, engineering controls, ergonomic personal protective equipment (PPE), and anthropometry-based workstation redesign was developed. The second phase evaluated the framework through a 14-day before–after intervention study in five selected MSMEs. Results: Most workers were exposed to moderate-to-very high ergonomic risks, with musculoskeletal complaints predominantly affecting the lower back, back, wrists, neck, and lower extremities. Following implementation, QEC exposure scores decreased across the five MSMEs from 68.7–84.5% before intervention to 46.3–63.2% after intervention, accompanied by reductions in REBA/RULA risk classifications and lower NBM complaint levels. Conclusion: The proposed framework effectively reduced ergonomic risks and musculoskeletal complaints among pre-elderly MSMEs workers through practical and low-cost interventions. Originality: This study contributes a comprehensive and context-specific adaptive ergonomic framework that integrates risk assessment, workstation redesign, administrative controls, and ergonomic PPE recommendations tailored to the characteristics of pre-elderly workers in resource-constrained MSMEs.
Background Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is common during adolescence and is associated with substantial psychological burden and elevated subsequent suicide risk. Physical activity (PA) may be a modifiable correlate of NSSI, but prospective evidence on potential emotional mechanisms and social boundary conditions remains limited. This study examined whether baseline PA was associated with subsequent NSSI, whether anxiety symptoms accounted for part of that association, and whether baseline social support moderated the relevant pathways. Methods A school-based two-wave cohort of 756 Chinese adolescents and young students (mean age = 17.36 years, SD = 2.58; 51.7% female) was followed for 6 months. At Time 1 (T1), participants reported PA, social support, anxiety symptoms, NSSI, and demographic characteristics; anxiety and NSSI were reassessed at Time 2 (T2). Autoregressive regression models adjusted for baseline anxiety or NSSI as appropriate, together with age, gender, and urban/rural residence. Indirect effects were estimated with 5,000 bootstrap resamples, and interaction terms were used to examine first- and second-stage moderation. Results Higher T1 PA was associated with lower T2 NSSI after adjustment for T1 NSSI. The indirect association through T2 anxiety was −0.12 [95% CI (−0.18, −0.06)], representing 48.0% of the reported total association. T1 social support significantly moderated the T1 PA-T2 anxiety association ( p = 0.003); simple-slope estimates indicated a stronger inverse PA-anxiety association at higher social support. Social support did not significantly moderate the T2 anxiety-T2 NSSI association ( p = 0.281). Conclusion The findings are consistent with a model in which greater PA is prospectively associated with lower NSSI partly through lower subsequent anxiety, while social support may shape the PA-anxiety link. Because anxiety and NSSI were measured concurrently at follow-up, the indirect effect should not be interpreted as definitive causal mediation. Multi-wave and intervention studies are needed to establish temporal ordering and causality.
Background Sleep problems are common among university students due to academic stress, lifestyle factors, and psychological distress and may adversely affect physical and mental health, academic performance, and social functioning. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have increasingly been used as a non-pharmacological approach to improve sleep health; however, previous findings remain inconsistent, and evidence specifically addressing sleep quality in university students remains limited. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effects of MBIs on sleep quality in university students and explore factors that may account for variations in intervention effects. Methods We searched seven databases—PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, Embase, and ScienceDirect—from inception to June 26, 2026. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating MBIs for sleep quality in university students were included. Two reviewers independently conducted study selection, data extraction, and risk-of-bias assessment using the RoB 2 tool. Meta-analysis was conducted in Stata 17.0 using a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses, publication bias assessment, and GRADE assessment were also performed. Results Ten RCTs involving 638 university students were included, with 335 participants in the intervention groups and 303 in the control groups. MBIs significantly improved sleep quality [SMD = −0.97, 95% CI (−1.43, −0.51), p < 0.001], although substantial heterogeneity was observed ( I 2 = 85.1%). Subgroup analyses revealed statistically significant between-group differences with respect to sleep-outcome measurement instrument ( p = 0.001), intervention type ( p = 0.009), and session duration ( p = 0.030), indicating that these variables may partially account for the observed heterogeneity. Sensitivity analyses supported the robustness of the pooled results. Egger’s test revealed no evidence of significant publication bias ( p = 0.270). The certainty of the evidence was rated as low according to the GRADE framework. Conclusion MBIs may improve sleep quality in university students. However, given the substantial heterogeneity and low certainty of evidence, further high-quality RCTs are needed to confirm these findings. Background Helping professionals face elevated risks of compassion fatigue and burnout, yet the daily processes through which emotional transformation occurs during therapeutic interventions remain poorly understood. This study examined how participants’ daily reflections shifted across the Emotion-Focused Training for Helping Professions (EFT-HP), analyzed through three complementary theoretical frameworks: Emotion-Focused Therapy's inner dialogue model (self-criticism, self-compassion, self-protection), Compassion-Focused Therapy's three-systems framework (threat, drive, soothing), and Ekman's basic emotion theory (primary emotions). Method Two hundred twenty-five helping professionals (88.0% female; M age = 38.7 years) from healthcare, social work, psychology, and education began the 14-day online EFT-HP intervention. Primary analyses focused on the 146 participants who completed at least 9 of the 14 days (completers), whose daily written reflections yielded 7,307 coded reflection units. Reflections were analyzed with directed content analysis and frequency quantification, applying non-exclusive, AI-assisted coding within three theoretical frameworks—EFT inner-dialogue categories, CFT emotion-regulation systems, and Ekman's discrete emotions—with a verbatim textual evidence excerpt retained for every assigned code. Results Across the intervention, participants’ reflections shifted from threat- and self-criticism-related content toward soothing and self-compassion. Within the EFT inner-dialogue framework, Self-Compassion was the most frequent category (17.9% of units) and was sustained throughout (Day-13 peak 30.8%), while Self-Criticism fell from 14.3% on Day 1 to 3.9% on Day 14 (73% relative decrease) and Self-Protection peaked on Day 6 (11.3%). Within the CFT emotion-regulation framework, the soothing system was the most frequently coded system overall (31.8% of units), followed by drive (20.4%); over the 14 days the threat system declined from 35.4% on Day 1 to 7.0% on Day 14 (80% relative decrease). Within Ekman's discrete-emotion framework, specific emotions were named less frequently: Fear declined from 2.7% to 0.8%, Anger peaked on Day 6 (15.0%), Joy rose to a Day-13 peak (14.8%), and Love was comparatively prominent (11.9% overall, Day-5 peak). Conclusions Across the 14-day intervention, participants’ daily reflections showed substantial shifts in emotional content, characterized by marked self-criticism and threat reduction alongside sustained self-compassion and soothing activation. Triangulated findings across three analytical frameworks: EFT inner dialogue, CFT emotion systems, and Ekman's primary emotions, are consistent with the emotional-transformation processes proposed by EFT-HP and with findings from previous controlled trials. Because the three frameworks were applied to the same reflection data, their convergence reflects analytic (theoretical) triangulation rather than independent confirmation.
Background: Brief psychological treatment programmes in primary care are increasingly used to address common mental disorders (CMDs), yet patient outcomes remain heterogeneous. Routine symptom measures may help identify patients who are more or less likely to achieve clinically meaningful change and may support treatment planning within stepped-care systems. This study examined associations between baseline depressive and anxiety symptom severity predicted reliable improvement and reliable recovery following brief psychological treatment in a real-world primary care programme. Methods: This secondary analysis used routinely collected data from 512 adults treated in a real-world primary care psychological intervention programme. Participants were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) before and after brief psychological treatment. Baseline demographic and clinical variables, including age, sex, number of sessions, and PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores, were examined according to reliable improvement and reliable recovery status. Logistic regression analyses examined associations between baseline variables and treatment outcomes. Results: Reliable improvement was observed in 73.6% of participants, whereas 53.3% achieved reliable recovery. Higher baseline anxiety severity was associated with reliable improvement (odds ratio [OR] = 1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08–1.23), whereas lower depressive severity predicted reliable recovery (OR = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.88–0.96). Fewer treatment sessions were associated with both reliable improvement and reliable recovery. Age and sex were not significantly associated with outcomes. Conclusions: Baseline anxiety and depressive symptom severity may be relevant for understanding variability in clinically meaningful outcomes following brief psychological interventions in primary care. Patients presenting with greater depressive symptom burden may benefit from closer monitoring and more intensive or extended treatment pathways within stepped-care models.
Abstract Importance Bullying is increasingly understood as a social process in which peers influence whether it persists. Anti-bullying policies and programs often encourage bystanders to intervene directly, yet direct defending can carry social costs for defenders, and evidence that it reduces later victimization is mixed. Some interventions already target the peer rewards that sustain bullying, but participant-role classifications tend to absorb deliberate non-reinforcement into outsider behavior or passive bystanding. Objective This paper argues that withdrawing social reinforcement, the deliberate withholding of social rewards that peers confer on bullying, such as attention, approval, amplification, or audience participation, should be conceptualized as a distinct bystander response. Methods This conceptual analysis draws on the social-ecological framework, participant role theory, social cognitive theory, and evidence that the outsider category is internally heterogeneous. Results Withdrawing social reinforcement is functionally positive when it reflects a refusal to endorse bullying and reduces the social rewards available to the student who bullies. It differs from uninvolved passivity in intent and social function, and from indirect defending in primary target, because these responses act on different points in the social process of bullying. When enacted collectively, it may also signal reduced peer endorsement of bullying and shift perceived peer norms. Conclusions Helpful bystander responding should not be defined only by direct intervention. Bystanders can also target the social rewards that sustain bullying, and responses grouped as passive bystanding differ in whether they sustain or withhold those rewards. Future research should test whether withdrawing social reinforcement can be reliably distinguished from uninvolved passivity and indirect defending, and whether it reduces reinforcement for students who bully. Implications for Practice Withdrawing social reinforcement requires less public confrontation than direct defending, offering students who cannot or will not confront the student who bullies another way to respond. Schools can teach this method as an explicit option alongside upstanding.
Developing effective therapeutic protocols for LGBTQIA+ individuals requires a commitment to practices that do not perpetuate suffering. Addressing negative internalizations and minority stress are two common transdiagnostic aspects within this population. Therapeutic models, such as Schema Therapy (ST), have emerged as a promising strategy; however, research in this area is scarce. This study aimed to evaluate an Affirmative ST program for LGB individuals. The program was tested in a pilot study involving nine participants. A total of 10 sessions were conducted, and the evaluation focused on: positive and negative affect, anxiety, stress (including minority stress), and depression. The effects of the intervention were analyzed using the Hageman-Arrindell approach and GEE. Significant differences were found for: reduction in depression; stress; anxiety; negative affect; and an increase in positive affect and stigma perception. This research represents a pioneering effort in the field of ST with LGBTQIA+ individuals, and further studies are encouraged.
Vocabulary acquisition constitutes a fundamental component in learning English as a foreign language; however, traditional teaching methods do not always promote motivation or long-term lexical retention. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of storytelling with urban legends in teaching vocabulary to young English learners. The re-search was developed under a quantitative approach and a quasi-experimental pretest and posttest design with a single group. The sample consisted of 48 students from the National and Foreign Languages Pedagogy major at the Technical University of Cotopaxi, and for data collection, a 30-item multiple-choice vocabulary test was used, which was applied before and after a pedagogical intervention based on four storytelling sessions using urban legends, de-signed for this research and validated through the judgment of three expert professors from the National and Foreign Languages Pedagogy major. The data were analyzed using descrip-tive statistics in Microsoft Excel, and the results showed an increase in the mean scores, which went from 20.27 in the pretest to 24.94 in the posttest; likewise, the minimum score increased from 5 to 11 points and the standard deviation decreased from 5.79 to 5.03, evi-dencing a more homogeneous performance after the intervention. In conclusion, the findings suggest that storytelling with urban legends constitutes a pertinent pedagogical strategy to strengthen English vocabulary learning by providing meaningful narrative contexts that favor the comprehension, retention, and use of new words.
Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is associated with elevated rates of anxiety and depression, as well as reduced quality of life, yet the mechanisms linking motor difficulties to these outcomes remain incompletely specified. This article presents and critically evaluates the Integrated Stress-Adaptation Framework for DCD (ISAF-DCD), which synthesizes empirical findings on DCD with established stress theories, including the Environmental Stress Hypothesis, the transactional model of stress, and the Conservation of Resources model. Although the framework is presented with reference to comorbid neurodevelopmental conditions broadly, its evidential basis and worked examples concentrate specifically on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD); generalization to other neurodevelopmental conditions is plausible but has not been evaluated here. ISAF-DCD proposes that motor coordination difficulties influence mental, cognitive, and physical health through interacting environmental demands, primary and secondary stressors, appraisal and response processes, and personal and social factors. The framework is bidirectional and developmentally sensitive, allowing outcomes to feed back into subsequent stress and adaptation processes across the lifespan. I examine the model’s conceptual coherence, empirical support, and potential clinical utility, arguing that ISAF-DCD offers a theoretically grounded heuristic for organizing a fragmented literature while remaining provisional. Its proposed contributions include clarifying the multiple roles of resilience and social support, refining the classification of environmental demands, incorporating neurodevelopmental comorbidity as a cross-cutting factor, and representing reciprocal relationships between stress and motor functioning. To improve falsifiability, I specify the temporal and functional roles of key dual-role constructs and derive five core, empirically distinguishable propositions that differentiate ISAF-DCD from an expanded Environmental Stress Hypothesis. Direct empirical support for some components, particularly the proposed corticolimbic mechanisms, remains limited. ISAF-DCD should therefore be treated as a hypothesis-generating framework, focused primarily on ADHD and ASD as comorbid conditions and on mental health as its central but not exclusive outcome domain, that requires rigorous longitudinal and intervention-based evaluation.
Executive function (EF) is foundational for school readiness, mental health, and social adaptation. Although cross-national studies document cultural variation in EF, less is known about whether EF differs across ethnic groups within the same national and educational context. In China, Yi, Bai, and Naxi children may differ in home language, childrearing practices, and educational beliefs, making them informative for examining universal and context-specific patterns of EF development. This study examined Executive Function (EF) development in a sample of 190 Chinese ethnic children (Yi, Bai, Naxi; 115 boys, 75 girls) aged 4–6 years. These findings revealed that, (1) Overall EF scores were highest for Bai children, followed by Naxi children, and than Yi children. (2) For inhibition control (IC), at ages 4 and 5, Bai and Naxi children performed significantly better than Yi children, whereas no significant differences were observed among the three ethnic groups at age 6. (3) For cognitive flexibility (CF), Bai and Naxi children are significantly better than Yi children. On the size, color, and shape sub-dimensions, pass rates were highest for Bai children, followed by Naxi and then Yi children; on the quantity sub-dimension, pass rates were highest for Naxi children, followed by Bai and then Yi children. (4) For working memory (WM), at ages 4 and 6, the ranking of scores across the three ethnic groups showed that Bai children obtained the highest scores, followed by Naxi children and than Yi children; at age 5, Bai children scored significantly higher than Naxi and Yi children. These findings contribute to theories of EF development by revealing both age-related convergence and cross-ethnic variation, and they inform culturally responsive early childhood education and intervention.
Synchronous video conferencing (VC) has become an established mode of higher education, but sustaining student engagement remains challenging, particularly in practice-oriented disciplines such as graphic design. This study examined the effects of three gamification mechanisms, including animated badges, experience points, and level upgrades, on behavioural, emotional, and cognitive engagement in synchronous VC learning. Guided by Self-Determination Theory (SDT), a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was implemented with 124 first-year graphic design students from three public universities in China. Participants were distributed equally across a non-gamified control condition and three gamified conditions (n = 31 per group). Engagement was assessed before and after a four-week instructional intervention. Significant improvements were observed within the engagement components across all three gamified conditions, with no statistically significant change observed within the control condition. Participant-level total scores for each dimension of engagement were then used to estimate baseline-adjusted regression models. The models accounted for 97.4% of the variance in post-intervention behavioural engagement, 96.6% in emotional engagement, and 98.8% in cognitive engagement. Relative to the control condition and after controlling for baseline engagement, animated badges, experience points, and level upgrades were associated with increases of 40.35, 46.90, and 49.36 points in behavioural engagement; 48.82, 51.76, and 52.48 points in emotional engagement; and 95.86, 105.46, and 107.36 points in cognitive engagement, respectively. The results suggest that gamification mechanisms vary in the strength and direction of their relationship with engagement, with the strongest adjusted relationships being found between progression-based gamification and the cognitive dimension of engagement. The study extends the analysis beyond significance testing by introducing a quantitative, baseline-adjusted model to estimate post-intervention engagement given gamification condition and baseline engagement and offers a more precise basis for the design of gamified VC interfaces.
Final-year engineering students frequently face severe psychological stress driven by demanding capstone projects and rigorous accreditation standards. This research proposes a novel decision-support framework to objectively evaluate, categorize, and systematically manage academic stress among engineering undergraduates. By integrating automated non-parametric machine learning with a multi-criteria network decision model, the research bridges diagnostic psychological profiling and strategic institutional intervention. Data were gathered from six hundred eleven final-year students across four engineering departments using a validated psychometric questionnaire. The automated classification engine utilizes a nearest-neighbor algorithm based on spatial Euclidean proximity to categorize individual distress severity into depression, anxiety, and stress levels without relying on rigid parametric assumptions. Subsequently, a strategic situational assessment and a multi-perspective personal performance framework were established to translate abstract psychological findings into measurable indicators. Clinical experts and academic domain specialists evaluated these indicators using an analytical network process, incorporating complex interdependencies and feedback loops to compute steady-state priority weights. Empirical results revealed that over ninety percent of respondents experienced at least moderate psychological distress. Crucially, the mathematical prioritization demonstrated that the financial perspective holds the paramount priority weight, followed by internal cognitive resilience, continuous knowledge acquisition, and external social relationships. This proves that financial stability serves as a foundational prerequisite for academic recovery and intellectual execution. The primary contribution of this research lies in converting static psychometric evaluations into a dynamic, clinically validated decision-support tool. Higher education institutions and academic counselors can implement this prioritized framework to allocate institutional resources effectively, design targeted financial relief initiatives, and optimize student well-being alongside academic excellence.
This study examines the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) assisted by flashcard media to improve third-grade elementary students’ critical thinking skills in Landscape (Bentang Alam) material. Methods: This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control-group design. The sample consisted of 44 third-grade students from SD Negeri in Semarang, divided into an experimental class (22 students) taught using PBL assisted by flashcards and a control class (22 students) taught using conventional learning. Data were collected using pretest and posttest instruments with 120 multiple-choice items (30 per skill) and analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, paired-sample t-tests, independent-sample t-tests, Normalized Gain (N-Gain) analysis, and analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) with the pretest as the covariate. Because of third-grade students' cognitive capacity, the test was administered in four separate sessions on four different days, with each session lasting approximately 45 minutes. Effect size was reported using Partial Eta Squared to measure the magnitude of the intervention’s impact. Both groups showed increased critical thinking ability after treatment, but the experimental group's increase was significantly higher than the control group's. After controlling for pretest scores, the ANCOVA results showed a significant difference between groups (F = 16989.679; p < .001; η²p = .998), indicating a large effect size. The experimental group's average N-Gain score was 0.7336, categorized as high and fairly effective, while the control group's average was 0.3784, categorized as medium and less effective. The greatest improvement occurred in the analysis and evaluation indicators. Implementing PBL assisted by flashcards effectively improves students’ critical thinking skills on Landscape material, as flashcards function not merely as visual media but as contextual problem triggers integrated into each stage of the PBL syntax. Keywords: problem-based learning, flashcard, critical thinking, landscape, elementary school.
This study aims to examine the effect of the CTL assisted by audiovisual with a deep learning approach on the critical thinking skills of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Tasikmalaya. Although the effectiveness of CTL has been widely investigated, studies integrating CTL, audiovisual media, and a deep learning approach simultaneously in economics learning remain limited, creating a research gap that underpins this study. The novelty of this research lies in examining the synergistic effect of these three components as a unified instructional intervention. The study employed a quasi-experimental method using a non-equivalent control group design. The research instrument was an essay test measuring critical thinking skills based on Ennis's indicators. The results revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group, with the mean score increasing from 36.22 on the pretest to 85.84 on the posttest, while the control group improved from 35.55 to 73.13. The independent samples t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), with a Cohen's effect size of 1.29, indicating a very large effect. It can be concluded that the CTL model assisted by audiovisual media with a deep learning approach is effective in improving students' critical thinking skills in economics learning.
Purpose: This study aims to identify the factors influencing teachers’ job satisfaction using a middle school in Dazhou City, Sichuan Province, China. Research design, data and methodology: A quantitative research design was adopted. Questionnaire surveys were distributed to 90 teachers at a middle school in Tongchuan District using stratified random sampling. Multiple linear regression was used to examine the relationships between working hours, work pressure, organizational commitment, teacher self-efficacy, teacher career motivation, and job satisfaction. In addition, a 16-week strategic planning program was implemented with 30 teachers to improve job satisfaction. Paired sample t-tests were applied to compare the pre- and post-intervention results. Results: The multiple linear regression results show that organizational commitment, teacher career motivation, and teacher self-efficacy have significant positive effects on job satisfaction. Working hours and work pressure do not show significant direct effects in the regression model. After the program implementation, the paired sample t-test results indicate significant improvements in working hours, work pressure, organizational commitment, teacher self-efficacy, teacher career motivation, and overall job satisfaction. Conclusions: The findings suggest that school management practices that strengthen organizational commitment, support teachers’ professional motivation, and improve working conditions can enhance teachers’ job satisfaction. Practical actions such as flexible work arrangements, professional development opportunities, and participatory school governance may help improve teachers’ workplace experiences and support sustainable educational development.
Background School-aged children that experience social anxiety and have difficulty with interactions among peers can create significant challenges to their development in terms of both psychology and behavior. A team sport such as volleyball provides a common setting that naturally includes all aspects of social interaction (communication, cooperation, role coordination, etc.) and shared goals which is essential to improve the child’s confidence in interacting socially and abilities to interact socially with peers. Objective This research is an examination of the effect that a 12-week collective volleyball cooperative tactical training program will have on social anxiety and peer interaction in children (8–12). Methods A sample of 80 healthy school-age children was obtained via two methods of campus based, voluntary and/or open recruitment. These children were then randomly assigned to either an experimental intervention group ( n = 40) or an active control group receiving standard physical education ( n = 40). For 12 consecutive weeks, participants in the experimental group engaged in a type of volleyball cooperative tactical team training that occurred on 3 days each week at 1 h per day. During this time the participants in the control group engaged in standard physical education classes of matched frequency and duration. Social anxiety was measured by use of the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC); SASC measures include total social anxiety, fear of negative evaluation and social avoidance/distress. Participant peer interaction was evaluated using a study-specific 25-item peer-interaction questionnaire covering interaction initiative, peer acceptance, interaction coordination, interaction openness, and conflict resolution ability. Data collection occurred prior to, as well as subsequent to, the intervention. Statistical analyses were conducted utilizing SPSS version 26.0 software. A 2 × 2 mixed-design ANOVA was conducted to examine Group × Time interaction effects, with group (intervention vs. control) as the between-subjects factor and time (pre-intervention vs. post-intervention) as the within-subject factor. Effect sizes were reported using partial eta squared ( η 2 p ), and post hoc comparisons were performed when significant interactions were identified. Results Group × Time Interaction Effects from a mixed-design ANOVA were found to be statistically significant for both of the outcomes (social anxiety and peer interaction) of this study. Children participating in an intervention that included an instructional program using the Collective Volleyball Cooperative Tactical Training Model showed significantly greater improvement than did those in the Control Condition in reducing their level of social anxiety as well as improving their peer interaction abilities over the course of the 12-weeks. Although we found a statistically-significant improvement in both children’s social anxiety, and their peer interaction skills through a 12-week program, there is no data available for us to understand if those positive results will continue into the future because we did not assess children at later points in time. Thus, future researchers are encouraged to consider extended assessment periods as part of their study designs to determine how long such interventions have an impact. Secondly, as a feasibility study in a controlled environment showed promise for implementation of cooperative tactical volleyball programs, there may be barriers to successful implementation in regular school settings such as lack of facilities, class size and teacher workload. Future research is needed to examine how cooperative tactical volleyball programs can be adapted to encompass large groups of students and incorporated into routine physical education curriculum. Furthermore, although the intervention showed feasibility under controlled conditions, implementation in regular school settings may face practical challenges, including limited facilities, larger class sizes, and teacher workload. Future studies should examine how cooperative volleyball tactical training can be adapted for broader school-based implementation. Conclusion Collective Volleyball Cooperative Tactical Training is an effective method for reducing social anxiety and improving the ability of school aged children to interact with peers. The program offers a viable, school-based model for integrating sport skills acquisition (training) and psychosocial growth through physical activity.
Background Cumulative exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is associated with an increased risk of substance use, overdose, and suicide. Rural children are more likely to experience most ACEs. There is limited literature contextualizing rural individuals’ experiences with ACEs. Public Health 3.0 calls for multisector partner engagement to generate collective impact. The purpose of this study was to evaluate rural providers’ perspectives on challenges and recommendations for ACEs mitigation in their community from a cross-sector context. Participants and setting Participants were 74 providers enrolled in an online ACEs training. Participants lived and/or worked in five rural Missouri counties with high drug overdose death rates. Methods This was a conventional content analysis of written responses to structured discussion prompts from three training modules. Analysis included familiarization, inductive identification of major codes, and refinement of codes, followed by independent coding by two authors until consensus, and reporting major patterns. Artificial intelligence supported preliminary code development. An adapted Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) framework organized challenges and recommendations by setting. Results Results included personal stories about how ACEs impacted their communities through overdose, suicide, homelessness, unemployment, and adverse health effects. Settings included schools, government, healthcare, daycares, criminal justice, Extension, fire departments, libraries, and nonprofits. Participants recommended expanding the ACEs definition to include satanic abuse, bullying, incest, war, genocide, military family stressors, and death of a loved one. Intervention recommendations included whole-family interventions, community-wide training, trauma-informed training, expanded access to treatment, classes in prison/jails, and fostering positive childhood experiences. Conclusion Community voice is necessary to contextualize setting-specific insights that inform development of upstream interventions appropriate for and tailored to the community. Participants identified both strategies that could be incorporated into everyday practice—including empathy, listening, providing judgment-free and safe spaces, providing food for children experiencing hunger, encouraging positive childhood experiences, mentoring, and connecting individuals with resources for food, shelter, clothing, and mental health—and broader structural changes that may require policy-level action. The adapted SIM organizes these concepts.
Background and objectives Health literacy in adulthood plays a major role in an individual’s ability to use health information to benefit their health. Social determinants in early childhood initiate the development of health literacy through newborn brain development and oral language acquisition. Both of these processes are promoted by stimulation from everyday interactions with parents/caregivers at home and in the community. Unequal access to language-learning opportunities during early childhood represents a modifiable developmental and social determinant of later educational and health outcomes. There are inequities in these time-sensitive interactions—specifically language-learning opportunities—across families in the population, which are social determinants of early literacy, achievement in school, and later-life education, health, and economic and social well-being across the life span. This gap is most pronounced among children who grow up in poverty in the United States and internationally. The healthcare system in the United States effectively reaches to nearly all infants; however, language-learning opportunities are not a focus during well-child visits. The term “Language Nutrition” (LN) was coined in prior research to refer to these developmentally rich interactions known to support brain and language growth in children younger than preschool age. We developed Kansas City Brain Builders (KCBB) to address this inequity by promoting LN broadly among families and children in a community so that all children have a more equitable home language environment. The purpose of this study is to report longitudinal empirical findings on families and children related to the implementation of KCBB, a public health approach to community change, over 2 years. Methods The evaluation involved two parallel longitudinal studies: the Community study and the Family study. The Community study assessed the implementation of a KCBB multisectoral community partnership to promote LN-friendly changes in local programs, practices, and policies. The Family study involved longitudinal assessments of a sample of 83 English- and Spanish-speaking families with children younger than 36 months of age, evaluating the KCBB impacts on parental behaviors and child growth in language skills. Results KCBB led to a high level of documented program implementation and substantial LN promotion throughout the community. Repeated parent assessments indicated that participants had received LN messages from multiple community sectors over time, increased their knowledge of the importance of LN, and used LN through storybook reading, verbal responsiveness, and teaching behaviors during interactions with their children. Growth in children’s early language skills was significantly associated with the amount of LN they received. Discussion/Conclusion KCBB is one of the few multisectoral interventions designed to promote community-wide change targeting LN. It is a manualized intervention that can be replicated by other communities. This study employed three levels of measurement such that change could be evaluated in a theoretical framework of influence from community engagement to parental behavior and growth in child language skills. Findings provide preliminary evidence that a multisectoral community approach can achieve broad reach and is associated with changes in caregiver practices and child language growth. Larger, controlled, and replicated studies are needed to establish causal effects and determine whether such approaches reduce disparities in language-learning opportunities.
Background Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide and is frequently accompanied by psychological and functional impairments. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a third-wave behavioral intervention focusing on psychological flexibility, has been increasingly applied in stroke rehabilitation. Although previous reviews have suggested beneficial effects of ACT in stroke patients, whether these benefits persist in the short term after the intervention ends, and the certainty of the evidence, remain unclear. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261325108). Randomized controlled trials evaluating ACT in stroke patients were included. Pooled effects were calculated using random-effects models, with separate analyses for post-intervention and follow-up outcomes. Sources of heterogeneity were explored using subgroup analyses and meta-regression. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool, and certainty of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE framework. Results Twenty-two RCTs involving 1,975 participants were included. ACT may be associated with reductions in depressive symptoms (post-intervention: SMD = −1.32, 95% CI: −1.80 to −0.84; follow-up: SMD = −0.76, 95% CI: −1.07 to −0.45) and anxiety symptoms (post-intervention: SMD = −1.36, 95% CI: −1.90 to −0.82; follow-up: SMD = −0.51, 95% CI: −1.42 to 0.40, not significant); depressive symptoms remained statistically significant at follow-up. Heterogeneity was considerable for both outcomes at post-intervention ( I 2 = 93.68% for depression and 93.60% for anxiety), so the pooled estimates represent average effects across studies. ACT may also be associated with improvements in psychological flexibility, quality of life, and sleep quality; however, these outcomes were based on a limited number of studies and showed considerable heterogeneity ( I 2 = 74.68 to 92.26%), so they should be interpreted cautiously. However, no statistically significant effects were observed for activities of daily living, neurological function, or hope. ACT did not appear to increase dropout rates in the available studies ( K = 16; RR = 0.99, 95% CI: 0.58–1.69). Meta-regression analyses indicated that intervention duration may not be a significant moderator of treatment effects. The certainty of evidence ranged from very low to moderate, mainly due to risk of bias and inconsistency. Conclusion Acceptance and Commitment Therapy may be a useful adjunctive intervention for improving psychological outcomes in people with stroke. However, evidence for functional recovery remains insufficient. Future high-quality RCTs with standardized protocols, larger samples, and longer follow-up are needed to confirm the long-term effectiveness of ACT. Background Diabetes frequently co-occurs with depression, anxiety, and diabetes-related distress, and psychological status directly influences glycaemic control and the risk of complications. Traditional mental health assessment relies on subjective scales. With the growth of digital health, digital phenotyping offers a new paradigm for real-time, objective mental health monitoring and prediction. However, the pathways through which these technologies perform monitoring and prediction remain unclear. Objective This scoping review aimed to systematically map the application pathways of digital phenotyping for mental health monitoring and prediction in people with diabetes, and to use machine learning-assisted text mining to analyse the main research themes and hotspots, thereby informing the future development of individualised risk prediction models and monitoring systems. Methods A scoping review search was conducted in six English databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library) and four Chinese databases (CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and China Biomedical Literature Database[CBM]), covering studies published from database inception to 10 September 2026. The search strategy was built around terms related to diabetes, digital phenotyping, and mental health. Machine learning-assisted literature mining was used to identify thematic patterns in the included studies. The study selection process and overall workflow followed the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Results A total of 2,968 records were retrieved. After screening, 10 studies were included. The evidence indicated that digital phenotyping mainly enables real-time monitoring of mental health in people with diabetes through signals such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), passive smartphone sensing, voice, and ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Machine learning methods were widely used for risk prediction modelling, but most studies built models at the group level, with only a few adopting n -of-1 analysis or subgroup prediction to achieve individualised risk prediction. External validation of models was generally lacking, and no intervention studies were identified. Conclusions Preliminary evidence suggests that digital phenotyping has exploratory potential for mental health monitoring and prediction in people with diabetes, but research that genuinely achieves individualised risk prediction remains limited. Closed-loop monitoring-intervention design and multicentre external validation are the main directions for future research. Systematic Review Registration https://osf. io/6wsaj/ .
Background As global aging accelerates, age-related psychophysiological conditions have emerged as major public health concerns. Promoting and sustaining vitality, an inherent human capacity, is essential for healthy aging and long-term well-being. The Mindfulness-based Vitality Promotion (MVP) program is a mindfulness-based behavioral intervention designed to enhance physical and psychological vitality and support sustainable well-being. This study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of the MVP program and explored preliminary pre–post changes in health-related outcomes among community-dwelling individuals in a lifelong learning setting. Methods This study employed a single-arm mixed-methods design. A total of 35 participants were recruited for this study. The MVP program was delivered over 8 weeks, with each session lasting 90 min. Quantitative data were collected through self-report questionnaires, and qualitative data were obtained via semi-structured interviews. Feasibility and acceptability were assessed based on program retention, session attendance, and participant satisfaction. Results Quantitative analysis revealed significant pre–post increases in integrative vitality and well-being, along with significant reductions in depression, fatigue, and anxiety. No statistically significant changes were observed in pain, sleep disturbance, digestive symptoms, anger, or mindfulness. Of the 35 enrolled participants, 31 completed the program (88.6%), with a mean attendance of 6.37 of eight sessions. Among the 30 satisfaction survey respondents, 28 (93.3%) indicated willingness to participate again and 30 (100%) indicated willingness to recommend the program to others. The qualitative analysis identified four major themes: (i) diverse life challenges and self-care needs, (ii) learning through experience, connection, and application, (iii) regaining balance and agency in life, and (iv) sustaining practice requires continued support. Conclusion Mixed-methods findings provide preliminary information regarding the feasibility and acceptability of the MVP program and indicate favorable pre–post changes in several self-reported health-related outcomes. The MVP program may represent a practical lifelong learning intervention with potential relevance for public health promotion. Further controlled studies are warranted to establish its efficacy. Trial registration The trial was first submitted to the Clinical Research Information Service, Republic of Korea (KCT0009961, https://cris.nih.go.kr/cris/search/detailSearch.do?seq=28524&search_page=L ), on October 8, 2024, before participant enrollment began, and registration was finalized on November 28, 2024.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of the ARAL-Reading Tool in improving reading fluency and comprehension among Grade Six learners in the Third District of Bohol during School Year 2025–2026. Anchored on Automaticity Theory, Schema Theory, and Sociocultural Theory, the study employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control-group design involving 15 purposively selected learners. Seven learners received the eight-week ARAL-Reading Plus intervention, while eight received regular reading instruction. Data were gathered using the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) and the Division of Bohol District Reading Assessment Template. Descriptive statistics and paired-samples and independent-samples t-tests were employed. Before the intervention, both groups demonstrated Frustration-level performance in reading fluency and comprehension. Following the intervention, the experimental group achieved 98.48% in fluency and 85.71% in comprehension, while the control group obtained 96.21% and 57.14%, respectively. Both groups demonstrated significant pretest-posttest improvements. However, between-group comparisons revealed a significant difference in comprehension (p = .019), but not in fluency (p = .185). The findings indicate that the ARAL-Reading Tool supported reading development, particularly comprehension. Strengthening structured reading interventions, instructional resources, teacher support, parental involvement, and continuous assessment was recommended. The study aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by addressing foundational literacy gaps and promoting equitable learning opportunities. Its contribution to educational and institutional sustainability emphasizes evidence-based reading interventions, stakeholder collaboration, and continued support for improving elementary learners' literacy outcomes and strengthening school-based educational recovery initiatives. The findings also provide a basis for school heads and education officials to refine implementation, allocate resources, and monitor reading progress.
Background: Individuals with complex trauma may continue to experience emotional distress, rumination, and maladaptive response patterns despite pharmacological treatment. Integrative interventions addressing affective responses, maladaptive patterns, and adaptive functioning warrant further clinical investigation. Case presentation: This report describes a 23-year-old woman diagnosed with complex trauma who her psychiatrist referred because she was not responding adequately to prescribed antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication. She received an eight-session intervention delivered in three phases: one session of Wiring Affect with ReAttach (W.A.R.A.®) on Day 1; one session of Brain-Switch 2.0® on Day 2 to address maladaptive brain patterns; and six subsequent ReAttach® sessions, emphasizing Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) 3, followed by CBM 1 and CBM 2. Clinical observations: Following the Day 1 W.A.R.A.® session, the client reported a quieter mind, reduced rumination, greater calmness, and sleeping that night without sleeping medication. Brain-Switch 2.0® was administered on Day 2, which further enhanced her self-agency. Subsequent ReAttach® sessions integrated her sense of identity and improved boundary setting with her parents. At one-month post-therapy follow-up, the client reported improved management of rumination, greater emotional regulation, anxiety within normal ranges, preserved cognitive functioning despite ongoing family difficulties, and greater satisfaction with herself. Pre–post quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) data showed changes in several recorded measures. The qEEG data indicated the absence of previous mental sluggishness, a clinically significant improvement in the trauma-related marker and emotional regulation within the normative range, and the absence of a depression-related marker.
Student engagement and participation are essential for interactive elementary science and social studies (IPAS) learning. Limited involvement in questioning, expressing opinions, and teamwork may hinder meaningful learning. This study examined changes in engagement and participation during the implementation of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) model at SDN Karawang Wetan III. Classroom action research involved 30 students across a pre-cycle and two intervention cycles. Classroom observations assessed seven engagement and seven participation indicators. Descriptive analysis showed improvements in both outcomes. Engagement increased in attention, enthusiasm, active involvement, peer interaction, persistence, and responsibility. Participation improved in questioning, answering, expressing opinions, discussion, cooperation, tournament involvement, and task completion. Reported percentages represent mean indicator-level observation scores rather than proportions of students meeting specific criteria. The findings suggest that structured teamwork, academic games, and individual accountability can provide practical opportunities for collaborative IPAS learning. Teachers should establish clear team roles and encourage individual contributions and questioning. Because the study involved one school and two cycles without a control group, the findings are context-specific and do not establish causality. Future research should examine multiple schools, longer implementation, sustained improvements, and relationships with IPAS achievement.
This study examined the relationship between pupils’ involvement in school-initiated absenteeism interventions and their academic achievement in Araling Panlipunan in Kadingilan II District, Bukidnon (SY 2019–2020). A descriptive-correlational design was employed involving 101 Grade 4 pupils identified as at risk of dropping out. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire (CVI = 0.89; Cronbach’s α = 0.91) and analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson product–moment correlation. Respondents were predominantly male (65.3%), aged 10–11 years (61.4%), from low-income households (85.1% earning ₱1,000–₱10,999), with parents largely self-employed (92.1%) and with elementary education (80.2%). Pupils reported high involvement in interventions: close-door counseling (M = 4.06), home visits (M = 3.80), CFSS (M = 3.74), and school feeding (M = 4.03), while dormitory involvement was low (M = 1.47). Academic achievement was generally low, with 63% fairly satisfactory (75–79) and 36% satisfactory (80–84). No significant differences were observed across most demographic variables (p > .05), except for dormitory involvement by gender and income (p < .05). Correlation analysis showed no significant relationship between intervention involvement and academic achievement (r = -0.186 to 0.149, p > .05). Findings indicate that while interventions enhance participation, they do not directly predict academic outcomes.
Executive functions (EF) predict school readiness and later adjustment. The cultural-historical tradition gives play a central place in preschool education, yet it remains unclear which types of play, under what conditions, and through which pathways support EF between the ages of 3 and 6. This article aims to critically analyze the evidence on play and EF in this age range, distinguishing between efficacy, association, and mechanism. The method was a systematic review with narrative synthesis, reported according to PRISMA 2020. Of 88 records (2000–2026), 21 primary studies provided direct evidence and 26 works provided complementary evidence. Rule-based games and pretend play showed favorable effects in studies with active control conditions, particularly on inhibitory control. However, the largest-scale curricular study found no effects, and block play showed no main effects. Benefits tend to be concentrated among children with initial disadvantages, and evidence on working memory, cognitive flexibility, and transfer to the classroom is scarce. In conclusion, play appears to be a promising context rather than an effective intervention in itself; its effects depend on executive demand, adult mediation, progression, and implementation fidelity.
Professional speech culture is an essential component of teacher preparation, yet university courses in this area often emphasize normative linguistic knowledge without sufficiently integrating its application to authentic pedagogical communication. This study aimed to preliminarily adapt and evaluate the Teacher's Speech Culture course for pre-service Kazakh language teachers by strengthening the integration of normative-linguistic, communicative-pragmatic, discursive, and interactive components of professional speech competence. A single-group pre-test–post-test design was used. Initially, 180 students were recruited from two higher education institutions in southern Kazakhstan; 156 completed all stages and were included in the final analysis. The adapted course combined theoretical instruction with professionally oriented communicative situations, independent construction of professional utterances, interactive tasks, and reflective analysis of speech behaviour. Professional speech competence was assessed before and after the course using diagnostic and performance-based measures. The assessment demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.86). Data were examined using pre-test -post-test comparisons and path analysis. Overall professional speech competence increased from M = 7.84 (SD = 1.62) to M = 9.72 (SD = 1.48), t (155) = 11.46, p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.92. Significant improvements were also observed across the normative-linguistic, communicative-pragmatic, discursive, and interactive components. Path analysis indicated that the ability to analyse professional communicative situations had the strongest direct association with professional speech competence. Professional speech competence was also positively associated with speech self-control and flexibility of professional speech behaviour. The findings provide preliminary empirical support for a practice-oriented adaptation of the Teacher's Speech Culture course that connects knowledge of language norms with contextual analysis, independent speech production, and regulation of professional communication. Given the absence of a separate control group, the observed changes should be interpreted as pre-test–post-test differences associated with course participation rather than evidence of a causal intervention effect. Further controlled studies involving broader samples are required to evaluate the effectiveness and generalizability of the adapted course.
This case study examines how dialogic learning and teaching (DLT) can strengthen problem-based learning (PBL). Conducted in a fifth-semester communication course at Aalborg University, Denmark, the intervention explored whether the physical classroom can function as a meaningful dialogic space that enhances group work, collaboration, and student responsibility in alignment with PBL. Drawing on theoretical accounts of dialogue, particularly Wegerif’s framework, the study investigated class-level and group-level dialogue facilitated by the teacher rather than self-facilitated dialogue outsourced to isolated student groups. Empirical findings from surveys and classroom observations indicate that DLT fostered deeper engagement, strengthened mutual accountability, and improved students’ willingness to contribute, while also revealing tensions such as reduced opportunities for digital note-taking and the significant time required for high-quality dialogue. The study concludes that DLT can substantively enrich PBL by supporting shared problem exploration and collaborative meaning-making when adequate time and flexibility are provided.
Abstract : This systematic review examined evaluative studies on reading interventions affecting schoolchildren’s comprehension outcomes, published from 2020 to 2026. Per PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 265 records were reviewed overall, out of which 166 unique records were screened, 52 full-text articles were reviewed, and 18 satisfactory records matched the inclusion criteria. The records included studies from 11 countries and comprised more than 2900 learners across 17 studies, with sample sizes ranging from preschool to high school. Due to heterogeneity among interventions, designs, and measures taken, a synthesis without meta-analysis was conducted, classifying 5 different intervention types and summarizing the overall findings. The results showed that 12 of 18 studies were positive, 2 had mixed results, 2 showed no effect on the outcome, and 2 were ambiguous in their reporting. The four studies that used explicit comprehension strategies yielded the most reliable results; among them, a tier one intervention had an effect size of +0.79, and a two-stage instructional approach had an effect size of +0.26. Code-based instruction was effective in three of four studies that used this method. Technology was effective in four of six studies, but the largest evaluated experiment did not show convincing results. Out of seven total experiments made by random sampling, five had positive outcomes, and it should be mentioned that no research was conducted in the Philippines. The studies’ outcomes emphasize the importance of supporting word recognition alongside explicit comprehension instruction.
Background This pilot study with class-level random assignment examined preliminary evidence on the associations between a structured physical game intervention and memory and attention in children aged 5–6 years. Methods A 12-week physical game program based on cognitive load theory was designed and implemented, consisting of three 60-minute training sessions per week. The program included various game activities designed to promote memory and attention development supplemented by smart interactive motion data collection devices. A pilot study with class-level random assignment was conducted among 59 children aged 5–6 years. Two intact kindergarten classes were included, with one class assigned to the experimental group ( n = 30) and the other to the control group ( n = 29). The experimental group received the structured physical play intervention, whereas the control group participated in routine kindergarten physical activities. The class, rather than the individual child, was the unit of randomization. Before and after the intervention, children's memory and attention levels were assessed using the Wechsler Memory Scale (measuring picture memory, visual reproduction, visual recognition, digit span forward, and digit span backward) and the Schulte Grid test. Results A 2 × 2 repeated-measures ANOVA showed significant Group×Time interactions for total short-term memory ( F (1,57) = 14.33, p < .001, η p 2 = .20), total immediate memory ( F (1,57) = 7.84, p = .007, η p 2 = .12), picture memory ( F (1,57) = 6.10, p = .017, η p 2 = .10), visual reproduction ( F (1,57) = 18.40, p < .001, η p 2 = .24), and digit span forward ( F (1,57) = 5.26, p = .026, η p 2 = .08). A significant Group×Time interaction was also observed for attention performance ( F (1,57) = 8.17, p = .006, η p 2 = .13). These findings indicated greater pre–post changes in the experimental condition than in the control condition for the outcomes examined. Conclusion These findings provide preliminary evidence that a structured physical game intervention was associated with improvements in memory-related task performance and task-related attentional processing in children aged 5–6 years.
Students differ in whether they learn for the sheer joy of learning or primarily to avoid failure. The difference can be partly explained by intrinsic motivation—a driver of engagement, persistence, and psychological well-being that is not fixed but shaped by the learning environment itself. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this review synthesizes research on educational interventions designed to cultivate students' intrinsic motivation, spanning five categories: need-supportive teaching, competence-supportive practices such as structure and feedback, instructional-method redesigns such as problem- and project-based learning, technology-based approaches such as gamification, and teacher-focused interventions targeting teachers' own behavior and motivation. Across these approaches, one pattern stands out: need-supportive interventions—particularly autonomy support combined with structure—carry the strongest theoretical and empirical support, while other interventions succeed only insofar as they satisfy students' psychological needs within a given context. Autonomy, competence, and relatedness thus provide a common framework for understanding how diverse educational practices influence motivational outcomes. Yet the evidence base remains fragmented: inconsistent conceptualizations of intrinsic motivation, considerable heterogeneity across intervention designs, and a scarcity of long-term data limit what can be concluded with confidence.
The article presents the content of a psychological program aimed at developing emotional intelligence, interpersonal relationships, and value orientations in older adults, as well as an analysis of its results. The program was developed based on the findings of a preliminary study of the psychological characteristics of older adults. The developmental activities included group discussions, situational tasks, role-playing exercises, narrative materials, and the analysis of personal experiences. The development of emotional intelligence focused primarily on enhancing emotional awareness, emotion regulation, self-motivation, and empathy. To improve interpersonal relationships, S. Karpman's Drama Triangle model was applied to help participants recognize the roles of the “Victim,” “Persecutor,” and “Rescuer” and develop constructive communication skills. The activities aimed at developing value orientations focused on raising awareness of the importance of health, honesty, mutual assistance, independence, responsibility, and tolerance. A comparative analysis of the data from the experimental and control groups made it possible to assess the effectiveness of the program. Research Object: The process of developing emotional intelligence, interpersonal relationships, and value orientations among older adults residing in care and support institutions. Research Aim: To develop and experimentally evaluate a psychological program aimed at developing emotional intelligence, interpersonal relationships, and value orientations in older adults.
Rising living costs and expensive higher education place many students under financial pressure, yet the evidence from Southeast Asia has not been brought together. Following the Arksey and O’Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines, a total of 239 records were screened, comprising 174 records retrieved from Scopus and 65 records from non-Scopus sources. Eleven studies from five countries (the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand) were charted and synthesised narratively. Six were quantitative surveys, and five of the eleven appeared in 2025 or 2026. Six themes emerged. First, costs extend beyond tuition: programme costs, rent, and other indirect expenses create hardship even where tuition is free. Second, access to family resources and financial aid is unequal. Third, financial strain is reported alongside psychological distress and academic strain, a pattern of co-occurrence rather than demonstrated cause. Fourth, students cope through income generation, saving and economising, building financial literacy, cognitive reappraisal, spiritual support, and selective use of social support. Fifth, financial literacy and behaviour appear to shape financial well-being, although findings on financial stress conflict. Sixth, authors call for support beyond tuition, but no study evaluated an intervention. The evidence is mostly cross-sectional, and no eligible study came from Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, or Timor-Leste. Malaysia contributes one study, which examines financial well-being rather than coping strategies. Future work needs harmonised measures, longitudinal and intervention designs, and wider country coverage.
This study investigated the effectiveness of using the Frontload vocabulary strategy in improving reading comprehension among EFL learners. Since vocabulary knowledge plays a central role in reading comprehension, the study examined whether pre-teaching key vocabulary items before reading tasks could enhance students’ understanding of texts. A quantitative quasi-experimental design employing pre-test and post-test measures was used with a sample of 27 preparatory-year EFL students at Taibah University. Participants received structured vocabulary instruction prior to reading activities over a three-week intervention period. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension performance after the implementation of the Frontload vocabulary strategy. The results suggest that pre-teaching vocabulary facilitated students’ understanding of reading passages and enhanced their engagement with texts. The study supports the effectiveness of vocabulary-focused instructional strategies in developing reading comprehension among EFL learners and highlights the importance of integrating explicit vocabulary instruction into reading classrooms.
The increasing demand for digital competencies in the current labor market has intensified concerns regarding the employability of unemployed graduates, particularly in developing economies. This study examined the impact of a short online digital skills training program on the employability readiness of unemployed graduates in Cebu City, Philippines. A quasi-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was employed to assess changes in participants' employability readiness following a structured, self-paced online training intervention. The program focused on productivity software, digital communication platforms, and online job-search strategies. Employability readiness was measured using a validated, researcher-developed questionnaire assessing digital literacy, job-application preparedness, digital communication skills, and job-search confidence. The instrument demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency, with an overall Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.88. Results indicated a statistically significant improvement in participants' employability readiness after completing the intervention (t = 9.87, p < 0.001). Improvements were observed across all measured dimensions, with the greatest increase found in job-search confidence. While the findings suggest that participation in the online training program was associated with improved employability readiness, the absence of a control group limits causal interpretation. Nevertheless, the study highlights the potential of short-duration online digital skills training as a practical and scalable strategy for supporting workforce preparedness among unemployed graduates in developing-country contexts. Future studies employing more rigorous experimental designs are recommended to validate these findings further.
This quasi-experimental study investigates the pedagogical effectiveness of Polya’s structured problem-solving framework in enhancing analytical thinking and academic achievement in high school physics. The research focused on tenth-grade students studying linear motion and free fall and used a one-group pretest-posttest design to evaluate cognitive and affective outcomes. The empirical results reveal a highly significant improvement in post-instruction physics learning achievement (p < .001) with a substantial effect size (Cohen's d = 1.59), successfully exceeding the rigorous 60% curriculum mastery criterion (p < .05). Concurrently, the students' analytical thinking abilities demonstrated marked, statistically significant growth (p < .001). Beyond cognitive gains, the structured intervention fostered highly positive attitudes toward the physics curriculum, with students reporting increased interest, determination, and academic responsibility. These findings strongly affirm that systematically integrating Polya’s four-step heuristic effectively supports metacognitive regulation, mitigates traditional problem-solving deficits, and consistently drives superior academic performance in complex scientific disciplines, providing a robust pedagogical model for contemporary physics education.
Esports research increasingly recognizes that multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games contain differentiated team roles, yet it remains unclear whether these role differences correspond to cognitive and learning-related profiles beyond immediate gameplay. This exploratory secondary analysis examined whether naturally emerging predominant roles were associated with post-intervention transfer-related outcomes among novice League of Legends players. Here, transfer-related refers to outcomes assessed beyond immediate gameplay and does not imply causal demonstration of transfer. Data came from the experimental arm of an eight-week quasi-experimental intervention requiring at least 18 hours of gameplay. Of 42 experimental participants, one predominantly played jungle and was excluded because this created a single-participant category. The final sample comprised 41 undergraduates classified as top lane (n = 5), mid lane (n = 15), marksman/ADC (n = 12), or support (n = 9). Outcomes included EEG-based attention-related engagement, working-memory-related theta activity, and theta/alpha-based cognitive load recorded during a standardized dual n-back task, together with 21st-century learner skills and content-specific learning performance. After z-standardization, Euclidean distances were analyzed using PERMANOVA with 9,999 permutations, principal coordinates analysis, and a multivariate dispersion diagnostic. The omnibus PERMANOVA did not detect statistically significant role-based differentiation, pseudo-F(3, 37) = 0.941, p = .526, R² = .071. PCoA showed substantial overlap, no statistically detectable dispersion differences were found, and the baseline sensitivity analysis was non-significant. These findings suggest that functional role differentiation within MOBA gameplay should not be assumed to produce corresponding differentiation in transfer-related outcomes among novice players with relatively short role exposure.
Long-term digital psychological intervention faces issues such as delayed state feedback, observation absence, and scattered individual responses. Static input is difficult to retain cross-period dependencies, and a unified strategy will also widen user differences and cause fluctuations in continuous actions. To address these problems, a personalized intervention system that combines Transformer temporal modeling and proximal policy optimization is constructed. Structured psychological state representation organizes continuous behaviors and subjective feedback into an updateable sequence. The Transformer encoder extracts long-term dependencies and local mutations, the individual embedding absorbs user response deviations, and the Kullback–Leibler (KL) constraint inhibits adjacent strategy jumps. The experiment uses StudentLife data and accompanying simulations, semi-synthetic data. The cumulative reward of the complete model reaches 634.7 ± 21.8, with a 95% confidence interval of 619.11–650.29. The rule strategy, Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) immediate state model, and the configuration without individual embedding are 412.6 ± 38.4, 528.3 ± 42.7, and 561.9 ± 35.2, respectively. The differences among the three groups, after Holm correction, all reach significant levels ( p < 0.001). The complete model enters the stable range after 1620 rounds, and the variance of the reward after convergence drops to 19.4. The rate of change in emotional intensity, the improvement value of state stability, and the cumulative variance of individual rewards is 0.091, 0.052, and 28.4, respectively. The ablation results show that temporal encoding mainly affects long-term benefits and convergence stability, and individual embedding focuses on reducing the dispersion among users. The existing evidence supports strategy optimization in non-clinical environments, but does not constitute a psychological mechanism explanation, causal effect proof, or clinical effectiveness conclusion.
INTRODUCTION: Outpatient hysteroscopy is an essential gynaecological procedure used to evaluate and treat any intrauterine pathologies. However, the most common reason for procedure failure is pain. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) and music for pain management during outpatient hysteroscopy. METHODS: This was a non-blinded randomised controlled trial conducted at a single tertiary hospital in Hong Kong. Eligible patients were randomised at a 1:1:1 ratio into three groups: VR, music, and control. Patients' pain scores were assessed using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale from 0 to 10 at various timepoints during hysteroscopy. The primary outcome was the maximum pain score during hysteroscopy. Secondary outcomes included pain scores at specific timepoints during hysteroscopy, other symptoms, patient satisfaction scores, and acceptance of undergoing future hysteroscopy in the same setting if needed. RESULTS: A total of 210 patients were analysed in the study. Overall, 65.7% of patients underwent diagnostic hysteroscopy, and 34.3% underwent additional procedures. The mean maximum pain scores did not significantly differ among the three groups (P=0.131). However, acceptance of future hysteroscopy was significantly higher in both the music group (mean ± standard deviation: 8.8 ± 2.1; P=0.002) and the VR group (8.6 ± 1.6; P=0.009) than in the control group (7.5 ± 2.7; overall P=0.001). CONCLUSION: The use of VR and music during outpatient hysteroscopy did not result in a statistically significant reduction in pain. However, patient acceptance of future hysteroscopy was significantly improved in both intervention groups.
This study examined the effect of Wordwall learning media on Grade V students’ learning outcomes in IPAS, focusing on ecosystems at SD Negeri 091273 Karang Bangun. The study used a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants were 24 Grade V students. Data were collected through learning-outcome tests administered before and after instruction using Wordwall, and analyzed descriptively, with a Shapiro–Wilk normality test, paired-samples t-test, and normalized gain analysis. The mean score increased from 37.29 on the pretest to 82.70 on the posttest. The reported paired-samples test yielded t = 14.201 with p < .001, indicating a statistically significant difference between scores before and after the intervention. The reported mean normalized gain was 0.7074, while the normalized-gain percentage was 70.74%, categorized in the source study as sufficiently effective; by commonly used numeric cutoffs, the mean gain value falls just above the high-gain threshold. These findings suggest that Wordwall may be a useful interactive alternative for teaching ecosystem concepts. However, because the study used a one-group design without a control group, the results should be interpreted as evidence of improvement after the intervention rather than definitive proof that Wordwall alone caused the improvement.

Background Early intervention increases the likelihood of eating disorder recovery but many young people delay help-seeking. We developed a smartphone-friendly, online decision-making tool to address this gap (FREED-Mobile (FREED-M)). Aims To conduct a randomised controlled feasibility trial of the FREED-M decision-making tool with 16- to 25-year-olds with a suspected eating disorder and no previous treatment for this. Method Participants were randomly allocated to FREED-M or an active control in a parallel group, two-arm trial. Outcomes were measured at weeks 0 (baseline), 4 (post-intervention) and 12 (follow-up). The primary feasibility outcome was attrition at follow-up. Other outcomes included motivational, clinical and economic measures. Results We over-recruited with 204 randomised participants (including 20 fraudulent participants). Main analyses were conducted with 184 genuine responders (FREED-M: n = 91, control: n = 93). At baseline, participants’ mean age was 21.0 (s.d. 2.0) years, 89% identified as female and 64% as White. Mean body mass index was 23.1 kg/m 2 (6.3). N = 83 participants had an anorexia nervosa-like disorder, 101 had another eating disorder or high eating disorder risk. Attrition at week 12 was n = 112 (61%). Of the n = 42 FREED-M participants who provided acceptability ratings, 79% liked the intervention and 66% found it useful. Between-group effect sizes for motivation and readiness to change were small to medium at 4 weeks ( d = 0.27 and d = 0.15, respectively) favouring FREED-M, but differences were not sustained at follow-up ( d = −0.02 and d = −0.12, respectively). Discussions Although the attrition rate was high, recruitment exceeded expectations. Acceptability of FREED-M was high among participants who provided acceptability ratings. Motivation/readiness to change and help-seeking are candidates for primary outcomes in a future randomised controlled trial.
Children with special needs (ABK) require proper identification and handling from an early age, so that inclusion elementary school teachers have an important role in recognizing the characteristics and needs of students. However, the limited understanding of teachers about the ABK screening process can be an obstacle in providing appropriate educational services. This study aims to determine the change in the understanding of inclusion elementary school teachers regarding ABK screening after being given psychoeducation using the ABK screening pocket book. The research uses a quasi-experiment method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research was carried out at SD Negeri 03 Simpang Rumbio, Solok City, by involving classroom teachers and special education teachers as research participants. Data collection was carried out using teacher understanding instruments provided before and after the implementation of psychoeducation. Intervention was carried out through the provision of psychoeducation regarding ABK screening supported by the use of pocket books as a practical learning medium for teachers. The pocket book first went through content validation by three educational psychologists to ensure the suitability of the material and its suitability. Data analysis was carried out by comparing teachers' comprehension scores before and after the intervention using statistical tests adjusted to the results of the data normality test. The results showed that there was a change in teachers' understanding after obtaining psychoeducation using the ABK screening pocket book. The pocket book also received positive ratings from users in terms of ease of understanding, ease of use, and benefits in supporting teachers to screen and determine the initial handling for ABK. Thus, the ABK screening pocket book can be used as a practical psychoeducational medium to support the improvement of understanding of inclusive elementary school teachers in identifying the initial needs of students.

Background Physical self-concept is a key indicator of physical and psychological development in children and adolescents and has been linked to participation in physical activity and overall wellbeing. Nevertheless, intervention studies examining whether structured physical activity enhances physical self-concept have yielded inconsistent findings. This review was undertaken to quantify the effectiveness of physical activity interventions and to examine factors that may influence their effects. Methods Relevant studies were identified through systematic searches of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and SPORTDiscus (via EBSCOhost) from database inception to June 10, 2026. Eligible intervention studies were quantitatively synthesized using standardized mean differences (Hedges' g) under a random-effects model. Prespecified subgroup analyses, meta-regression, leave-one-out sensitivity analyses, and publication bias assessments were also performed. Results Ten studies involving 3,662 participants contributed to the quantitative synthesis. Overall, structured physical activity interventions were associated with greater improvements in physical self-concept than control conditions (Hedges' g = 0.51, 95% CI 0.17–0.85; p = 0.008), although substantial between-study heterogeneity was observed (I 2 = 86.5%). No statistically significant differences in intervention effects were detected across geographical regions, participant types, or developmental stages. Neither intervention duration nor the proportion of female participants significantly explained between-study variability. Conclusion Structured physical activity interventions are associated with improvements in physical self-concept among children and adolescents. These findings suggest that structured physical activity may be a useful strategy for promoting positive physical self-concept during childhood and adolescence.
Background Therapeutic Physical Activity (TPA) is an unaddressed behavioral recreational method in anger management programs in higher education in Egypt, especially among students with physical disabilities (SWPD). Purpose This study aimed to assess the efficacy of an 8-week TPA intervention on the severity of anger in male university students with physical disabilities in Egypt. Methods A randomized controlled trial (RCT) design (parallel-group) was used with 140 male undergraduate students at Minia University who were randomly divided into an 8-week TPA group ( n = 70) and a treatment-as-usual (TAU) control group ( n = 70). Severity of anger was measured at baseline and at the end of the intervention with the PROMIS Anger Short Form 8a. Results There was a clinically significant and statistically significant difference between the TPA and controls in the severity of anger, F (1, 137) = 48.62, p < 0.001, partial η 2 = 0.262, with a mean difference of −10.42 T-score points (95% CI: −13.48, −7.36) greater than the MCID. Reductions in anger were not associated with physical functioning changes, indicating non-physiological mechanisms. Moderately positive relationships were found between adherence and anger reduction (r = 0.42; p < 0.001), and sensitivity analyses showed that the results were consistent across disability severity. Conclusion TPA is a culturally affirming, body-based, anger-management approach that incorporates adaptive sports and behavioral learning for SWPD emotion regulation. Therapeutic recreation may be implemented as a low-stigma, easy-to-access supplemental mental health support program in the University disability services, especially for male students in collectivist contexts.
Background Large language models are increasingly used for informal mental health support, yet their safety during escalating suicide-risk conversations may depend on how prior information is presented. Native multi-turn conversations and reconstructed cumulative prompts differ not only in the presence of prior model responses but also in prompt reconstruction, information concentration, message positioning, explicit integration cues, and conversation-state processing. Objective This study compared suicide-risk recognition, direct safety inquiry, response urgency, and timely real-world intervention across isolated current-turn prompts, reconstructed cumulative user-only prompts, and native continuous multi-turn conversations. Methods We conducted a controlled repeated-measures evaluation of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Doubao using 12 standardized five-turn trajectories: 4 direct suicide-risk trajectories, 4 implicit or internally inconsistent risk trajectories, and 4 non-suicidal high-distress controls. Each trajectory was evaluated under three context-presentation formats. The 24 model-trajectory combinations were treated as matched repeated-measures units nested within 8 independent risk-trajectory blocks. Primary contrasts were estimated using exact trajectory-level sign-flip tests and trajectory-block bootstrap confidence intervals. Turn-level outcomes were analyzed using multilevel mixed-effects models. Exploratory condition-by-model heterogeneity was assessed using a trajectory-blocked exact permutation sensitivity analysis, with a trajectory-clustered interaction model used only as a secondary asymptotic check. Results Timely appropriate intervention occurred in 10/24 isolated current-turn observations (41.7%), 21/24 reconstructed cumulative observations (87.5%), and 12/24 native continuous observations (50.0%). On average across the three systems, reconstructed cumulative presentation exceeded isolated input by 45.8 percentage points (95% trajectory-block bootstrap CI, 25.0 to 66.7; Holm-adjusted exact P = .031), whereas native continuous performance was 37.5 percentage points lower than reconstructed cumulative performance (95% trajectory-block bootstrap CI, −50.0 to −25.0; Holm-adjusted exact P = .031). Exploratory model-specific analyses indicated substantial heterogeneity: the native-versus-reconstructed contrast was largest for Doubao, smaller and statistically imprecise for Gemini, and absent for ChatGPT. Conclusions On average across the three evaluated systems, reconstructed cumulative user-only prompts outperformed native continuous conversations, although exploratory model-specific patterns were heterogeneous. Because the formats also differed in prompt reconstruction, information salience, message positioning, explicit integration instructions, and native conversation-state processing, the contrast cannot isolate the causal effect of prior model responses.
To handle the problem of resource scarcity and lack of personalization and adaptability in the traditional approach to mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in dealing with college students with anxiety disorders, this study proposes the use of the natural language interface and adaptability properties of large language models (LLMs) to come up with an intelligent college-level MBCT intervention system. To begin with, the system functional requirements and the logic of the system intervention were explained in line with the fundamental ideas of MBCT and the cognitive features of students with anxiety. Second, it was created through a four-stage adaptive architecture that includes perception analysis, intervention, and feedback, providing a dynamic process for user status identification, personal generation of intervention plans, and real-time optimization of the intervention process. Finally, there was a randomized controlled trial whose subjects were 120 college students with anxiety who were separated into an experimental group and a control group. The effectiveness of the intervention was assessed using tools such as the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), and the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire (ATQ). The findings indicated that the SAS score of the experimental group (38.26 ± 5.12) was significantly less than that of the control group (45.89 ± 6.34), the MAAS score (68.73 ± 7.25) was significantly higher than that of the control group (56.41 ± 8.13); and the ATQ score (42.15 ± 6.08) was significantly less than that of the control group. The study reveals that an adaptive MBCT system using large language models may be effective in reducing anxiety symptoms among college students, improving mindfulness, and enhancing cognitive processes, offering a new, readily available strategy for addressing anxiety in college students.
This study aimed to assess musculoskeletal and ergonomic risk, identify demographic, occupational, lifestyle, and biomechanical characteristics associated with these outcomes, and develop and prioritize ergonomic intervention strategies for petrochemical control room operators. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2025 among 210 male control room operators from an Iranian petrochemical complex using census sampling. Data were collected using the Demographic/Occupational Questionnaire, Persian International Physical Activity Questionnaire (P-IPAQ), Persian Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Screening Questionnaire (P-ÖMSQ), and Persian Ergonomic Screening and Priority Tool (P-ESPT), complemented by objective postural and plantar pressure assessments. The P-ÖMSQ was used to classify participants according to P-ÖMSQ risk categories, with scores ≥ 90 categorized as moderate-to-high risk. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 20.0, with descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multivariable logistic regression. A P-ÖMSQ score within the moderate-to-high risk categories (≥ 90) was observed in 27% of participants, while 78% were classified as having moderate-to-high ergonomic risk. Multivariable logistic regression showed that older age (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.09, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02–1.17, p = 0.014), higher body mass index (BMI) (aOR = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.04–1.27, p = 0.006), and longer job tenure (aOR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.01–3.89, p = 0.047) were independently associated with higher odds of being classified in the moderate-to-high-risk P-ÖMSQ category. Lower physical activity was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of forward head posture, thoracic hyperkyphosis, lateral pelvic tilt, and pes planus ( p < 0.05). Objective biomechanical abnormalities were also significantly associated with higher P-ÖMSQ-based and P-ESPT-based risk categories ( p < 0.05). Based on the study findings, 20 ergonomic intervention strategies were proposed and prioritized through a stakeholder-informed participatory process. Older age, higher body mass index, and longer job tenure were associated with higher odds of being classified in the moderate-to-high-risk P-ÖMSQ category, while lower physical activity was associated with selected postural abnormalities among petrochemical control room operators. Several objective biomechanical abnormalities were also associated with P-ÖMSQ-based and P-ESPT-based risk categories. These findings may inform the prioritization of workplace ergonomic interventions; however, the proposed interventions were not evaluated in the present study, and their effectiveness should be assessed in future longitudinal and interventional studies.
Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) نسخه ۲۰.
Background The 7 October 2023, terrorist attack at the Nova Festival in southern Israel caused deaths, injuries, hostage-taking and prolonged life-threatening exposure, creating an urgent need for early interventions to reduce post-traumatic morbidity. Although prolonged exposure is an established post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment, its feasibility and benefit during ongoing threat remain unclear. Aims This preliminary study evaluated a war-adapted brief prolonged exposure protocol (WBPE) delivered shortly after trauma in Nova Festival survivors with acute stress disorder. Method Forty survivors completed the WBPE and were assessed at baseline and immediately post treatment. A subsample of 27 WBPE completers and 18 untreated wait-list controls was reassessed after 5 months. Outcomes were PTSD (PDS-5), depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7) symptom severity. Results WBPE was associated with significant reductions in PTSD, depression and anxiety immediately after treatment. At 5 months, WBPE participants showed greater reductions in PTSD and depressive symptom severity and lower PTSD and depression symptom scores than controls, with large effect sizes. Anxiety symptoms improved in both groups, consistent with possible natural recovery. Clinically significant depressive symptoms (48.15 v . 77.78%) and anxiety symptoms (37.04 v . 72.22%) were less frequent in WBPE participants than controls, whereas probable PTSD rates did not differ significantly. Substance use during the study period was associated with poorer outcomes and smaller symptom reductions. Conclusions WBPE appears feasible and potentially beneficial under wartime conditions, with meaningful improvements in PTSD and depression despite persistent threat. Substance use was linked to poorer recovery and should be systematically assessed in post-trauma care.
Mental health and psychosocial wellbeing among migrant workers and their families are important public health concerns in Nepal. The PARBARDHAN project used a community-based approach to strengthen mental health and psychosocial support, community participation, and local service capacity in migration-affected communities. This study describes psychosocial wellbeing at endline evaluation and compares findings descriptively with baseline and midline . A cross-sectional, mixed-methods endline evaluation was conducted in Salyan and Kailali districts of Nepal. The quantitative component included 245 project beneficiaries aged 16–80 yearsincluding20 (8.2%) migrant/returnee workers and 225 (91.8%) family/community respondents; 216 (88.2%) reported having a family member currently abroad. Psychological distress was assessed using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), and anxiety and depression the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL-25). Life satisfaction and subjective happiness were assessed. Qualitative interviews and focus group discussions provided contextual information on project implementation and perceived effects. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics while qualitative data were analysed using framework analysis. Data were collected from3-26 February, 2026. At endline, 34.7% screened positive for psychological distress, while 8.2% screened positive for anxiety and 5.3% for depression (5.3%). Compared with baseline and midline assessment rounds, anxiety and depression screening positivity was lower at endline, whereas probable psychological distress was higher. Qualitative findings indicated increased mental health awareness, greater willingness to seek support, perceived reductions in stigma, and support through self-help groups, peer groups counselling, and community activities. However, substantial dissatisfaction with life was also reported. Because the evaluation rounds used independent cross-sectional samples, the observed differences cannot be interpreted as within-person changes or attributed causally to the PARBARDHAN intervention. The findings indicate the perceived value of community-based mental health and psychosocial support while highlighting continuing economic insecurity, family separation, and other structural factors affecting psychosocial wellbeing.
Introduction Faculty development (FD) is an established feature of Higher Education, yet its impact on what teachers actually do in their teaching has been studied less often than outcomes such as satisfaction, learning and attitudes. This behavioural level is the third of the four outcome levels in the adaptation of Kirkpatrick's model developed for FD in Higher Education. No prior review has mapped it across disciplinary fields outside health professions education, and the present scoping review addresses that gap. Methods Following the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews, we included empirical and theoretical sources published in English between 2005 and 2025 that reported a change in the teaching practices of university teachers following structured FD, in any discipline other than health professions education. Scopus and Web of Science were searched, with the last search on 25 April 2026. Three reviewers charted the data independently, coding the evaluation framework, the assessment method and type of evidence, and the indicator and direction of effect. Empirical studies were appraised with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Results The search yielded 491 deduplicated records, of which 69 met the inclusion criteria. The evidence is recent and concentrated in the United States and in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Fifty-three of the 69 sources name no evaluation model. Of the 64 empirical studies appraised, 29 used non-randomised or descriptive quantitative designs and only one used random assignment. Qualitative studies largely met their criteria, whereas quantitative and mixed methods studies recurrently showed incomplete outcome data, unaccounted confounding, undocumented intervention fidelity and unexamined divergence between strands. Of 217 behavioural effects, 150 rest on teacher self-report and 66 on evidence external to the teacher, with one effect not classifiable. The direction of effect depended on how the change was established. Positive effects accounted for 65% of the self-reported behavioural effects but for 42% of the externally documented ones, and for 65% of those measured without a baseline against 49% of those measured with one. Discussion The literature makes its central claim, that development changes what teachers do, largely on the teachers' own testimony. Where that claim is tested against external evidence, it holds less often. Systematic Review Registration https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/SAERU .
Introduction Interventions that dyadically equip families with self-compassion skills represent a promising approach for addressing mental health challenges, particularly during the key transitional period of middle childhood. This study examines changes and candidate processes associated with participation in the Mindfulness and Self-Compassion for Children and Caregivers (MSC-CC) course. Methods Twenty-three caregiver-child dyads (Child, M age =8.78; Caregiver, M age =41.2) participated in MSC-CC, delivered remotely over six weekly group sessions. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included self-report measures of parenting and relational closeness outcomes during a dyadic stressor task (behavior, reflective functioning[RF], and physiology). Analyses investigated pre-post change in primary outcomes and linear mixed-effects models estimated time-related changes and baseline moderators of physiological change. Significance tests identify pre-post increases in parenting and emotion-supportive beliefs. Results and Discussion Physiologically, we detected significant decreases in child physiological arousal. Exploratory moderation analyses suggest, among others, low levels of mindfulness and high RF at baseline predict the largest reductions in child stress physiology. While uncontrolled, the MSC-CC participation was associated with increases in mindful parenting and the caregiver-child relationship and lower child physiological arousal during a dyadic challenge, most prominently in families with lower emotion-supportive beliefs at baseline. Altogether, this highlights candidate processes and moderators of efficacy to be confirmed in a fully powered randomized controlled trial. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov , Self-Compassion for Children and Caregivers (SCCC) , NCT05818397, registration and study start on 2023-10-16.
ثبت کارآزمایی: ClinicalTrials.gov، Self-Compassion for Children and Caregivers (SCCC)، NCT05818397، ثبت و آغاز مطالعه در ۲۰۲۳-۱۰-۱۶.
Background: Refugee students newly enrolled in U.S. schools encounter academic, socialization, and mental health challenges because of trauma, language barriers, and cultural differences. Many have had limited or interrupted access to formal education in their home country. This study aimed to gain the perspectives of refugee students on their lived experiences and explore the impact of an occupational therapy intervention guided by the Kawa model on the well-being of this student population. Methods: The researchers employed a convergent mixed-methods design. Refugee students (n = 8) created Kawa models, which provided rich, qualitative data. Participants completed pre and posttest surveys. Quantitative data gathered from surveys were used to measure students' understanding of their supports and barriers. Results: All participants demonstrated a 49% positive change in their perceived knowledge of their strengths, challenges, and supports. Qualitative analysis of participants’ Kawa creations revealed multiple collective themes throughout the migration stages of refugee students. Conclusion: This study's findings support existing evidence that culturally sensitive, person-centered interventions, such as one guided by the Kawa model, result in positive outcomes for refugee students. As school districts examine equitable practices for refugee children, occupational therapy support guided by the Kawa model may be a valuable contribution.
The digital transformation of pharmaceutical manufacturing has generated an urgent need for graduates who possess competencies in intelligent manufacturing, data-driven process control, digital quality systems, regulatory compliance, and innovation-oriented problem solving. However, conventional pharmaceutical education often remains theory-centered and insufficiently connected with real industrial scenarios. This study developed and evaluated an Intelligent Pharmaceutical Manufacturing curriculum module under the framework of industry–education integration. The module incorporated Quality by Design (QbD), Process Analytical Technology (PAT), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), electronic batch records (EBR), digital twins, virtual simulation, AI-assisted process optimization, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliance, validation, and data integrity. A four-integration teaching model was proposed to connect curriculum content with industrial standards, classroom learning with production scenarios, physical practice with virtual simulation, and knowledge acquisition with innovation projects. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was used to evaluate the module. Students in the intervention group received the newly developed curriculum module, whereas students in the control group received conventional instruction. Results showed that the intervention group achieved greater learning gains than the control group in knowledge acquisition, practical competency, digital manufacturing competency, and learning engagement. The largest improvement was observed in digital manufacturing competency, suggesting that the module effectively addressed a key limitation of traditional pharmaceutical manufacturing education. Qualitative feedback further indicated that students perceived the module as authentic, industry-relevant, and beneficial for future professional development. This study provides a transferable curriculum framework—centered on the proposed four-integration teaching model and industry–education co-cultivation mechanism—for cultivating pharmaceutical professionals capable of adapting to intelligent manufacturing, and offers practical implications for industry–education collaboration in higher education.
Abstract This study investigated the effect of family planning services on the psychosocial well-being of persons with hearing impairment in Buea Sub-Division, Cameroon. The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design, complemented by qualitative data, involving an experimental group and a control group. Twelve participants were involved in the family planning intervention assessment, with six assigned to each group. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments of psychosocial well-being, complemented by participants' testimonies. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and independent-samples t-tests, while qualitative responses were examined thematically. Findings revealed no statistically significant differences in psychosocial well-being between the experimental and control groups at pre-test (p > .05). However, following the family planning counselling intervention, participants in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher psychosocial well-being scores (M = 135.83) than those in the control group (M = 75.67), with a statistically significant overall difference (t = 7.608, p < .001). Significant improvements were observed across all six dimensions of psychosocial well-being, particularly environmental mastery, positive interpersonal relationships, autonomy and self-acceptance. Qualitative findings further revealed improved reproductive health knowledge, increased self-confidence, reduced fear, enhanced communication with partners and greater autonomy in reproductive decision-making. The study concluded that accessible family planning counselling significantly improves the psychosocial well-being of persons with hearing impairment. It recommended integrating disability-inclusive family planning counselling, qualified sign language interpretation and psychosocial support into reproductive healthcare services to promote equitable access, reproductive autonomy and psychological well-being.
The Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC), the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI), and the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (FINEEC) have recently actively sought to identify and produce means and tools to support socio-emotional learning and well-being among children in early childhood education. According to reports conducted by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish National Agency for Education, there is a need for a more research related to research-based intervention methods in ECE. The aim of this descriptive review is to highlight Finnish peer reviewed intervention research and find out how teacher-child interaction skills are described within it. The findings indicate that Finnish intervention research is relatively recent, and that all intervention programs are targeted at entire groups of children. The intervention studies (n = 18) were evenly divided into descriptions of method implementation, the strengthening the professional competence of ECE and care personnel and the supporting the socio-emotional skills among children and ECE and care personnel. Teacher competence was enhanced through training that emphasized theoretical knowledge, its binding into practice, and shared reflection. Approximately half of the interventions were based on positive psychology. The role of guardians in interventions was limited. The descriptions of the teacher-child interaction were strongly focused on emotional support. According to the results, the core of teacher-child interaction lies in the teacher’s active role: the teacher is not merely available to the child but acts as an active agent in creating learning opportunities for each child. Supporting the child relies largely on the teacher’s own teacher-child interaction skills and their ability to appropriately use and apply materials. Therefore, strengthening teachers’ own socio-emotional competence and professional capacity is essential within interventions. Providing stronger support for children with greater needs in socio-emotional learning also requires more individualized interventions. Ultimately, children’s socio-emotional learning and competencies, as well as the learning environments that support them, are nurtured by ECE teachers and other ECE and care personnel.
This exploratory cluster-randomized pilot study investigated the individual and combined effects of Video Self-Modeling (VSM) and preferred music during warm-up on physical, technical, and psychological performance following a nine-week shot-put learning program in secondary school students. Eighty students, nested within four intact classes, were allocated to four conditions at the class level (one class per condition): neutral self-talk with no music (control), VSM only, preferred music only (PM), and combined VSM plus preferred music (CVSMPM). Shot-put distance, technical execution, rating of perceived exertion, feeling scale, and situational motivation (SIMS) were assessed. Physical performance improved significantly in all groups. Because randomization occurred at the class level with a single class per condition, intervention and class-level effects cannot be statistically separated; results are reported as descriptive contrasts. Descriptive contrast analysis showed medium-to-large effect-size differences favoring the combined intervention over control on physical and technical performance at formative (0.79 < d < 1.50) and summative assessments (0.62 < d < 1.32). Feeling-scale scores increased with large-to-very-large effects in CVSMPM and PM (1.34 < d < 2.02), and situational motivation improved with medium-to-large effects in CVSMPM (0.87 < d < 1.69) and PM (0.79 < d < 1.21). CVSMPM showed the most consistent pattern of medium-to-large effect-size differences in motor skill acquisition, technical proficiency, and psychological engagement relative to the other conditions. Given the cluster design and exploratory analyses, these findings should be regarded as preliminary and hypothesis-generating.
Understanding the emotional vulnerability of cancer patients and caregivers is critical for improving psychological support and clinical intervention strategies. With the rapid growth of online health communities, large volumes of textual narratives describing treatment experiences and emotional struggles have become available for computational analysis. However, accurately capturing emotional intensity and contextual sentiment in such narratives remains challenging due to the complex linguistic patterns present in health-related discussions. This study proposes an attention-guided hybrid transformer-ensemble learning framework for emotional vulnerability detection in cancer-related social media posts. The proposed architecture integrates domain-adapted contextual representations generated by BioBERT with linguistic intensity features to capture both semantic context and emotional strength. An attention-based feature fusion mechanism dynamically combines these heterogeneous features to produce enriched representations of patient narratives. The fused representations are subsequently utilized by multiple optimized machine learning classifiers, including XGBoost, LightGBM, Random Forest, and CatBoost. Hyperparameter optimization is performed using the Optuna framework to improve predictive performance. Furthermore, ensemble learning strategies such as soft voting, hard voting, and stacking are employed to combine the predictions of the base classifiers. Experiments conducted on a held-out split of a publicly available dataset of 10,391 posts from cancer patients and caregivers demonstrate that ensemble approaches consistently outperform individual classifiers on this data. The stacking ensemble achieves an accuracy of 0.76 and an ROC-AUC of 0.91, outperforming its own individual base classifiers but not a fine-tuned BioBERT baseline (accuracy 0.77, ROC-AUC 0.92) evaluated on the same split; a TF-IDF with linear SVM baseline is also competitive (accuracy 0.763). The framework’s practical advantage over full BioBERT fine-tuning is therefore computational rather than purely predictive: it reuses frozen BioBERT features and adds a lightweight, interpretable attention-fusion and tree-ensemble stage at a fraction of the training cost, while an ablation study confirms that the attention-based fusion of contextual and lexical-intensity signals meaningfully outperforms either signal alone or their simple concatenation. The proposed framework thus provides a scalable, lower-cost computational approach that can support mental health monitoring and early intervention systems in online healthcare communities, at a modest accuracy cost relative to full transformer fine-tuning.
OBJECTIVE: Increasing numbers of young people (YP) are seeking support for eating disorders, creating a growing unmet need for timely and accessible treatment. While guided self-help (GSH) interventions have demonstrated effectiveness for other youth mental health difficulties, options for eating disorders remain limited. SPICE (Short Psychological Intervention for Children with Eating Disorders), a transdiagnostic CBT-based GSH program, was developed to address this gap. This qualitative study explored participant perspectives on the mechanisms through which SPICE may support recovery. METHOD: SPICE comprises eight weekly modules supported by a 30-min guided therapy session each week. Six female adolescents with eating disorders and their parents who completed SPICE participated in semi-structured post-intervention interviews. Data were analyzed using critical realist thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four key putative mechanisms were identified: (1) Interpersonal support (from the guide and parents) as a catalyst for change and for keeping momentum going. (2) Increased knowledge of eating disorders and associated cognitive and behavioural factors leading to positive changes. (3) In vivo experiential learning as key to implementing specific strategies and taking ownership over change. (4) Context, that is, individual and systemic factors promoting and inhibiting change. DISCUSSION: Interpersonal relationships were perceived to promote engagement and change. Participants reported that psychoeducation empowered them and their families, while experiential learning helped translate strategies into everyday practice. Flexible and tailored approaches were considered important for improving accessibility and effectiveness. Perceived barriers included complex module content, remote delivery, and competing commitments. Findings provide preliminary support for GSH interventions for eating disorders in YP and identify areas for refining future intervention.
This theoretical and analytical study examines pedagogical approaches to developing critical thinking among primary school pupils. Drawing on foundational accounts of reflective thinking, sociocultural learning and critical-thinking skills, it identifies age-appropriate components of critical thinking and systematises six instructional approaches: problem-based learning, purposeful questioning, comparison and classification, discussion and collaborative work, graphic organisers, and reflective exercises. The analysis specifies the classroom conditions required for these approaches and proposes a five-stage instructional model encompassing activation of prior knowledge, a problem question, information analysis, justified conclusions and reflection. A classroom illustration concerning responsible water use demonstrates how the model may be implemented. The outcomes are a conceptual synthesis and practical recommendations rather than findings from an intervention study; the effectiveness of the model has not yet been empirically tested
Time poverty plagues schools worldwide. Current research has focussed on the quantitative analysis of accumulated tasks and duties that serve as the symptoms of a phenomenon known as time poverty. Every school is home to a similar yet unique set of complex, hidden temporal patterns created by different and often conflicting social calendars that combine to influence the rhythm of school life for teachers and students alike. The need for these social calendars to structure school time-and-place arrangements inevitably leads to the formation of the temporal paradox of schools: that to function effectively, time must be fixed; yet to succeed, time needs to be fluid. Rhythm analysis and a taxonomy for understanding the subjective experience of time provide novel lenses through which to reconceive time poverty in schools not solely as a quantitative problem, but instead as contextually specific temporal arrythmia. Activity theory provides an analytical framework to be paired with a new taxonomy of temporal experience to create a novel analytical tool to reframe time poverty in the context of teacher workload and develop a temporal empathy for the purposes of meaningful – school-based – intervention.
The 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes caused widespread devastation across 11 provinces in southeastern Türkiye, resulting in profound psychosocial consequences for children, including increased emotional avoidance and difficulties in self-expression. This study aimed to examine changes in psychological flexibility and language-related outcomes (listening, speaking, reading comprehension, and writing) associated with participation in a bibliotherapy-based intervention among children affected by the earthquakes. The study employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design. Participants were middle school students residing in the earthquake-affected region. The experimental group participated in a 12-week multicomponent ACT-based bibliotherapy program, whereas the control group continued with the regular educational curriculum. The intervention was structured around Russ Harris’s The Reality Slap and incorporated guided reading, metaphor-based activities, mindfulness practices, reflective writing, and group discussions. Each session involved structured reading of designated chapters and page ranges aligned with the thematic focus and targeted ACT processes. Psychological flexibility and four language-related outcomes-listening, speaking, reading comprehension, and writing-were assessed at pretest and posttest. Significant differential changes were observed for psychological flexibility and reading comprehension. For listening, the primary Time × Group interaction reached the conventional 0.05 significance level but did not remain statistically significant after Bonferroni correction, whereas the baseline-adjusted ANCOVA showed a statistically significant between-group difference ( p = 0.008). Thus, the findings for listening were not consistent across analytical approaches and were interpreted cautiously. The Time × Group interactions for speaking and writing were not statistically significant. The findings suggest that participation in the multicomponent ACT-based bibliotherapy program was associated with improvements in psychological flexibility and reading comprehension among earthquake-affected adolescents. Evidence for listening skills was less consistent across analytical approaches and should therefore be interpreted cautiously. Given the quasi-experimental design, nonrandom allocation, and absence of an attention-matched active control condition, these findings should not be interpreted as definitive causal effects attributable exclusively to bibliotherapy.
Parental psychological control is consistently associated with internalizing problems among college students. However, less is known about the indirect role of interpersonal sensitivity in this association and whether upward social comparison on social media is related to variation across different pathways. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 1026 college students (proportion of males: 56.53%, age: 20.28 ± 1.09). A moderated mediation model was then constructed. Parental psychological control was positively associated with stress, anxiety, and depression. Interpersonal sensitivity accounted for significant indirect associations between parental psychological control and each dimension of internalizing problems. Upward social comparison on social media negatively moderated the association between parental psychological control and interpersonal sensitivity, as well as the associations of parental psychological control with stress and depression. In contrast, upward social comparison on social media positively moderated the association between interpersonal sensitivity and stress. These findings provide targeted intervention ideas for college students’ mental health education in the digital media era through parental psychological control.
